Does anyone remember the guy from here who was working on his own blood engine? He posted screenshots and some updates to the doom general, but I haven't seen anyone mention it in a while.

I've extracted the speed and momentum values from the assembly and then tweaking them so they are consistent with the custom engine's units for movement. The custom engine is all floating point while the original game was fixed point so there will be some inconsistencies, though I am considering switching to using all fixed point.

There's also a lot of iterations/trial and errors to make it feel right as well. Eventually, I do intend on asking around for testers to ensure that everything feels right.

Even if BloodEX doesn't kick off, I still intend on using the engine as an GPL-alternative to BUILD.

Why ? If it's for a fan remake, you're still infringing the game's licence even if you don't use Build.

The only reason I can guess to this is if you want to make a modern port/remake of a Build game which sourcecode is lost. For instance, the PC version of Powerslave, which could also explain why PowerslaveEX got taken down.

Please don't ruin PC Powerslave.

Also, a remake of Powerslave would work MUCH better using a modern version of Build, a là EDuke32. But yes, if you did that, you'd have to pay royalties to Ken Silverman.

Every idiot is gonna end up playing your abomination instead of the real game and think it's legit lol. I saw that one webm of the tommy gun in your version and it looked like it had pinpoint accuracy to cross-hair, which is obviously not how the gun should be as the gun has a lot of recoil. That really screws up the balance because there will be no more need to switch to an actual long range weapon for distance enemies, and you could easily shoot a cultist with the tommy gun accurately from the distance. One of the best things about Blood is how you gotta get close with weapons like tommy gun and shotty to make the shots count and conserve ammo properly. And if tommy gun is boned then I doubt the other weapons will be appropriate either.

Oh well it's only video games.

This is some serious deja vu from a BloodCM thread we had once. I use ZDoom myself which happens to be a good source port using Doom's actual source code. What I wouldn't like is some game that inaccurately pretends to be Doom by trying to estimate its behaviours empirically. That wouldn't be Doom, that would be an imitation, which is what BloodCM is and what Kaiser's project is going to be, even if he put more effort into it than BloodCM.

I honestly can't remember the last time I played Doom in DOS. I use (g)zdoom and sometimes with mouselook, even though it can be cheating so I try to avoid to use it to get the upper hand in gameplay situations.

In terms of "purists", or "autism", whatever you call it, there is definitely worse than me on this board, like the "how it's intended to be played on a CRT emulation is a sin" kind. But then again some of these are people who live in Europe and who'd rather play a bad slowed down 50hz port of an American/Jap game than to play it in 60hz through emulation, so I'm not sure what kind of "purist" they are.

I however don't understand why someone would willingly play a recreation of a game which gameplay is completely off when the actual thing is still there to be played. I guess they're not allergic to using DOS(box), but if that's the case, don't play DOS games. But there is also what he said >>3481562

I've replayed both add-ons. Can you remind me what you said was wrong about Scourge of Armagedon ? Because I enjoyed both add-ons a lot, although the Egypt themed maps of Dissolution were probably the best.

I'm actually currently playing the Saturn version of Quake because I've become a sucker for Lobotomy Software. The main interest are 4 exclusive levels made by them, but I'm actually (mostly) enjoying the game. Yes, I know, Quake on Saturn IS an inferior recreation in another engine which gameplay behaviour are off; so it can sound like it doesn't fit with my stand on Blood recreations and what I just said. However there is no denying it's off and inferior, I'm mostly interested in Lobotomy's work.

I know exactly what you're referring to, me criticizing enemy placement and traps, but I don't remember what you said was so bad about the add-ons, since I don't expect Kaiser to answer my assumptions since he's probably already said too much (I just hope he does a passable work on whatever Build game he's being paid to remake), we might as well use this thread.
Also, I don't hate Quake, I happen to even play some usermaps from times to times. Because I nitpick on one thing doesn't mean I have extreme opinion on the entire thing. For instance, see this thread, and yet I bought and played Strife-VE (although that new map was nothing special really).

Powerslave EX is still a fantastic way to play the game and a more enjoyable experience than on the original Saturn/PS1 hardware. Beyond notions of "muh" authentic experience, EX only improved Powerslave and I'd more than welcome a similar port of Blood if it meant being able to play it with decent mouse controls on modern systems.

Player movement is completely innacurate, even more so underwater. Enemies behaviour, be it movement or the way they attack, is completely innacurate. Weapons behaviour is completely innacurate. In other words, everything gameplay related is completely innacurate, and when I say that, I don't mean "it's a little off" as in "the amun bomb will be thrown slightly farther or faster", I mean it's NOTHING like the PS1 version, it's off the roof.

The only thing PowerslaveEX is good for is admiring the levels while listening to the music, and even then it's still being played in another engine anyway so the whole point of that is kinda null. You're better off watching a let's play on youtube.

On top of that, EX is based on the PS1 version, which in terms of gamepaly, is an inferior port of the Saturn version which had much more interesting gameplay mechanics and balance. So EX is like a fucked up version of a worse version.

This has nothing to do "my authentic experience", this only has to do with "playing the goddamn game".

As for controls, both the Saturn and PS1 versions have perfectly fine controls. They even included failsafes for platforming segments, for instance in the Saturn version if you're on the ledge of a platform, you can bruteforce get back on it; and in the PS1 version it's like there is an invisible ledge around each platform so that the player can't fall off by mistake, or so that jumps don't have to be pixel perfect. Don't expect this kind of subtle details to be in EX, which actually makes jumping segments WORSE in it. So much for your advanced controls.

Would you please calm your tits? Unlike Doom, the source ports of Blood and Powerslave indeed do NOT exist, Saturn Powerslave is unplayable on emulators and Blood in Dosbox has a borderline playable framerate on almost every configuration (and i say it after beating it on my old PC back in ~2000s and two times on a Dosbox). CM or EX is not the best way to play them both for sure, but for the people who are just curious about the atmosphere it is surely a good one (maybe even the only reasonable one for Powerslave since the PC version is inferior to console versions and has the usual DOSbox performance problems).

Not true. I have the PAL Saturn version but I also played the NTSC-U version (been looking for the NTSC-J version forever with no luck...) on Yabause, and it works perfectly fine.
I know Saturn Powerslave like the back of my hand, I did a speedrun for it by finding ways to exploit amun bomb jumping to its maximum and even found new tricks which were never shown before, so I'm pretty tight on the game's mechanics and the only inacuracy of playing it in Yabause was that the background image of the loading screen doesn't show. It's perfectly 100% playable.

That is exagerated. On my old dual core 2,5ghz the game played perfectly smoothly, 60FPS minimum all times, in 320*240. That's far from unplayable, and a dual core 2,5ghz is a toaster these days.

About performance. Blood is the only Build game with this issue and the PC version of Powerslave should run perfectly fine on its max resolution (640*480) on something like the toaster mentioned above. Now though, the PC version is completely different game, but if you want to play the console versions on PC they both work perfectly fine emulated.

I have nothing personal against Kaiser and he seems to be an at least decent programmer, but I think he's wasting his time and effort with those.

Blood ran buttersmooth on any DOS based Windows before XP released. And it runs fine on DOSBox at 800x600 provided you don't have a toaster. There are also successful guides to get it running at 1280 x 1024 if resolution is the only thing you care about, which it seems to be if you're willing to play a cheap knockoff just because it gets 1080p widescreen support.
