If it's a game where I don't care about the writing much I'll often buy the English copy because they're often 20-30 dollars cheaper even without adding import fees into the equation. If they have Japanese language options I'll use that though.

Many games have bad translations, but many have good ones as well. Nowadays i much rather play dubbed games as well, but that's just me, for most of my life i used subbed and thought myself an enlightened individual or some bullshit akin to that, but good dubs can really change you perspective, i really liked the cold steel dub i'll say that much (til 3 that is. >>
>>497710187
it's not THAT hard. Once you learn the ones kindergartners use, the rest come slightly easier (since you should also be reading simple books/comics while learning)
>>
>>497711408
Look at the creative staff and try to infer which language was the "original" or that the writers would be better at directing VA for and the like.
IE a finnish game made by finnish devs and written by a finnish dude my also have a english release at launch but it's probably better to play in finish.
I don't know why I put so much though into this shit I'm probably autistic.

>>
>>497713001
Skip radicals. Uninstall duolingo.

Keep going with Tae Kim and the Core 2k/6k decks. You can install VNCore 1250 or more obscure decks to pick up more obscure vocab. If you install the VNCore deck it'll share vocab with Core2k for a while at the beginning then branch out into explaining some more obscure stuff.

Sekiro was not only a bad dub, it was a bad translated with several mistranslated parts that severely altered the story itself for the English audience. You did yourself a disservice if you played it with an English dub, but then again thanks to the shit translation you still wouldn't have been able to understand what was going on in the story.

>wasted almost 2 years of being a NEET not learning japanese
I tried about exactly a year ago now, but only got like 180 cards into anki
I restarted yesterday with a different deck, my issue was the furigana was hindering me on the old one. I'd learn the card because I recognize the furigana and sound not because I recognize the kanji.
This one doesn't have furigana or sound on the front of the card, it should make it easier to remember the kanji

There are only 2 races of humans in this earth, the Anglo and the Yamato. God put our races on islands so that we would live separately from the continental sub humans. Jesus Christ himself travelled to England and preached the gospel and with his own two hands built the very first church in Glastonbury. The Emperor of Japan is a direct descendent of Amaterasu, the Anglo Japan alliance is the oldest alliance between human civilizations and rightfully we have dominion over the lesser beings on this earth such as the Queerbecker, the Slav, the Chinese and the Korean

>thinking kanji only has two readings

you don't know hell yet
>>
>>497716676
Yes. Hiragana and Katakana are the first hurdle but learning vocabulary and becoming familiar with kanji is widely and falsely regarded as difficult because of the sheer effort you have to put into it. Thinking that kanji and vocab is hard is the first 'wall' to learning because grammar is way worse.

It's also important to be consistent with learning because skipping 1 day becomes skipping a weekend which becomes skipping a week or a month or months or years. It's easy to forget Japanese if you don't use it so you get stuck staring at Anki encouraging you to review hundreds or thousands of cards and you have to do it or else you'll forget what you're learning and then it's like you never learned it at all.

In the time it takes to learn Japanese you could be fluent in a whole bunch of romance languages like Spanish or Italian. Yet when was the last time anyone wanted to read the original text of Don Quixote? Don Quixote has over 20 translations but your favorite Japanese media probably has none. In the time it takes to translate a VN you could probably just learn Japanese and read it yourself. Learning Japanese isn't really something you'll regret. You'll regret not learning it around 4 years from now.

How do you have that many cards that you're failing 40 of them a month in? Should be getting like 50 or 60 reviews a day max. How many new cards are you even setting for yourself? If you're getting that overwhelmed, stop putting new cards for a day or two. It's more important to get grammar and start reading than it is to have a bunch of new words. If you can't read the sentences, those words are basically useless anyway.

It gets easier but improve your retention through mnemonics or rote and actually read the sentences + listen to the audio if you're using the Core 2k/6k that has it. It'll go over your head at first but at the rate I assume you're going at (around 20 new cards a day) the sentences in anki should make sense after a month (but you're still screwed for native material).

Review Tae Kim a lot. If you're using Japanese media then I also recommend Japanesewithanime because it has extensive guides on particles, more obscure parts of the language (like the rare kana), and how the language can work in fiction (like how a character might speak in purely katakana).

EFL refers to people in non-English speaking countries learning English which is a foreign language to them.
ESL refers to people living in English speaking countries that speak another language as their native language.
Brazilians learning English in Brazil are EFL learning a foreign language.
Brazilians that come to the USA then learn English are ESL learning is as their second language.

Well now you know that they are technically incorrect and can call them out.
The reasoning if you are curious is that these terms emerged as part of education. Teaching people to speak English where the classroom is their only place to use it vs teaching English where they live in an English speaking country. Students learning English in Brazil obviously will have different needs than immigrants living and working in the US. So they constructed the two terms as two different types of education methods and styles emerged.
You can google esf vs efl if you want more details than a random anon poster.

I haven't really properly studied pitch accent itself tbqh. I pretty much just stick to imitating natives when it comes to intonation.
Pitch accent isn't uniform across the country anyways: Tokyo and the Kansai regions have completely different accents, plus there's regions that do not use pitch accent to distinguish any words at all.

Supposedly a lot of natives won't understand you if you haven't studied pitch at all. The issue is you have to memorize it for every word (or memorize multiple meanings for one set of characters), which seems near impossible for self-study. I have plenty of basic vocabulary, but it will suck if I'm handicapped for actually using it because of the pitch thing.

You have to learn to write it with its proper stroke order. If you're going to learn a language, you can't skimp on something so fundamental. You're building a strong foundation for the rest of your learning.
>>
>>497722394
Sounds like bullshit to me. Pitch accent in Japanese doesn't have distinguishing words from each other to the extent of Chinese or other tonal languages where every syllable carries its own tone.
You can say there's a correct/incorrect intonation for words but it doesn't mean that every incorrect intonation will make it into a different word.
Just think to how many foreign accents in English you can understand, even if they for example stress the wrong syllables or use wrong vowels.

Stroke order should help with writing the characters, but some of them are just retarded, such as 左 and 右 having a different order to the first two strokes, even though it's the same thing. Chinese stroke order starts both the same way, with the horizontal stroke first.

Another weird one that comes to mind that I would never use is for 必, where the most natural thing to me is to do 心 + ノ instead of starting in the middle like the Japanese order tells you to.
>>
When learning kanji, does stroke count or stroke order really matter that much? I can't bring myself to care. It seems like learning cursive english. Not really. It's good to know the general rules of stroke order but even the Japanese government says it's just a general guideline for teaching. Most people don't know stroke order was only set in 1958.

People that say they can tell the difference between following stroke order or not have just fallen for useless orientalism. They probably don't give a shit that different cultures draw a circle in different starting positions and directions. Becoming autistic over dumb asinine shit like stroke order is just cope for the fact they can pat themselves on the back for that instead of learning more vocab or reading more.

Knowing stroke number might help (and it's good to know the difference between computer / written fonts) but only insofar as it helps you look up stuff in a dictionary.

I didn't know that dyslexia is something you can partially train to deal with so it looks like your GF was actually just lazy if she was that bad at anything subbed.

Also, I didn't know this, but dyslexia can be different between languages. Someone dyslexic in English isn't necessarily dyslexic in Japanese. One of the huge barriers for dyslexic people when learning Japanese is actually the English guides on how to learn the language. The condition is really weird. Your GF unironically should have given learning Japanese a shot.

You can notice it on Capcom games a lot. For games like RE, Dino Crisis, DMC, Dragon's Dogma, the Japanese versions were English VA from the start and whoever was in charge of the English script made it so that it wasn't too dry. Then you see the Japanese subtitles for those lines and suddenly all the plot-insignificant stuff that gives it some flavor is mostly gone from the Japanese subtitles. And then when they do a dub, they use those dry Japanese subs for it as well.
Dragon's Dogma was especially disappointing when you expected aughtism in Japanese and got none of it.

You'll regret not learning the language in a few years when you could already have been fluent. If there is ever a video game or VN that you want to play and it's not translated then it's legitimately faster to learn Japanese then it is to wait for a translation team to assemble and complete the translation. Yosuga no Sora is still being translated after more than a decade. The Ar Tonelico 2 Relocalization Project went from 2009-2017. Just learn Japanese.

Just don't actually go to Japan or work in Japan.

>You mean pitch accent?

There is no thing called pitch accent in linguistics. It's tones all the way through. The thing is that Japanese uses tones relying on the level of the voice (like African languages, Swedish, Serbo-Croatian, ancient Greek) instead of contours within each syllable (like Mandarin, Vietnamese, Thai or North American languages). Some languages use both (Cantonese, for instance, has 3 contour tones and 2 registers to say them in, giving you 6 tones varied by both pitch and contour), some add in accents (Mandarin places accent on certain words).
>>
>>497741551
What the fuck do you mean level of voice? Like loudness? Because that is just incorrect.
>>
>>497741678
Like in all tonal system, relative to one's standard voice range. It's not like you always have to pull off C5 or no one will understand you.
In standard Japanese, most people listen for a drop in your voice.

Sure, Japanese is considered the hardest language due to the unfamiliar grammar, completely different writing system, and the general lack of common words.

This is changing, though. Japanese today has a huge amount of English loanwords, and although a significant proportion wind up being misleading, they still make the language a bit easier. I'd say within 50 years, it'll be downgraded so that Chinese is considered the hardest language, because they really don't use English loanwords at all.

The reality, of course, is that Japanese is also the easiest language to learn if you're here. I could never, in a million years, learn French. Not because it's difficult or would take a lot of time, but because I'd blow my brains out after a day or two.

I still use anki after years tho. Because some words are kind of rare. I have almost 2000 words on my mining deck. But I have grinded them for so long that daily I get only 10-30 words from both of my decks in total.

Grind hiragana and katakana to your memory.
Then start reading some basic grammar book like Tae Kim's (waiting for that one retard to cry now).
Anki is a program that works as flashcards but it keeps schedule when you should review the card again. Like new cards, if you always answer "good", jumps first 1 day -> 2 days - 4days - 7 days, etc. There is also "again" that resets it to tomorrow, hard, that increases the review interval with only a bit, and easy that increases the interval by a lot.
>>
>>497744241
>How does one learn Japanese
You get to a basic level through rote memorisation and spaced repetition, and then you learn it the way you learn any language, by consuming compelling content until you know everything there is to know because you looked up every word you didn't know and couldn't infer from context. Anki is a spaced repetition system, it's pure jank to set up but you only have to do it a couple of times.

>>
>>497744241
Was going to write out a whole schedule for you, but >>497744479 covered it very well. Learn your kana, then use Tae Kim or Genki while going core 2k in anki (I think 6k has too many unnecessary or outdated words when you're just trying to build a basic vocab). If you want another textbook after Genki to help with grammar, grab Tobira. Then just read what you want - NHK Easy News, children's manga, vidya, etc.
Some people like to study kanji too, while others just learn it as they learn vocab. If you want to do individual kanji study, try to just learn one or two words to associate with the kanji (which can help you learn vocab faster) and maybe the main reading (you'll get the hang of readings as you learn more vocab). Don't try to learn everything about the character.

However, 「いけない」 and 「ならない」 must always be negative, so this is not correct. In actuality, we still use the same 「だめ/いけない/ならない」 and use the opposite of the verb that goes in front of it instead. This double negative can be kind of confusing at first but you will get used to it with practice. There are three ways to conjugate the verb before adding 「だめ/いけない/ならない」 and two of them involve conditionals so aren’t you glad that you just learned conditionals in the previous section?

No you are incorrect, unless the person is living by themselves. Going home to familia in America and speaking your native language is not an "English Environment" period.
Using Brasil as an example really did you in, as Western European countries and their residents are taught more than one (or two) languages and one is typically English, THAT is learning English as a "foriegn" language.
Furthermore the first language a child learns actually impacts their development, the language is "native" to them and always will be.
So, if English is not their native languange, it is ESL. You can replace 2nd but never first.

That's when you learn the valuable that you don't need to read every single bubble/textbox. Everytime a character starts talking about food, that's an insta-skip for me. Saves so much time. I don't learn a lot of food vocab, but since I always skip food-shit, I don't need to.

Just don't stick around on Anki too long. Get Core VN from the itazura website and start trying to read smol baby shit once you hit like 500 words. I don't recommend Core2k until afterwards, because Core2k is made by frequency of use from the newspaper so you'll get dumb shit you'll never need like 輸入 before you get critical Japanese words like 中出し. Yes, you'll have to look up lots of words as you're reading. Welcome to learning a language.

>>
>>497758771
All of the latter turn into the former, even back when enko was the name for it all the amateur whores pretended they weren't actually fucking for money.

It's all about saving face. When enko started becoming mainstream and being known as something that whores do, they all just started calling it something different so they could have an excuse.

It's a travel show where a girl cosplays as Asuka and gets her budget set by how many comments she gets on her blog multiplied by 0.1, 1, or 10. Usually this means she gets completely fucked and has a budget of a few hundred yen. You feel bad for her when she's basically homeless, but sometimes people take pity on her and let her stay the night or buy her some food.

Turn off max reviews and that's about it for options. Don't use 2 or 4 (Hard/Easy), always 1 or 3 (Again/Good). Make sure you look up how to use proper Japanese fonts in Anki, especially since they forced everyone onto the latest version that decided to default to Chinese fonts instead for some stupid fucking reason.
