The founding fathers were exceedingly good at this sort of thing and the plans to make the revolution successful were laid for decades in advance. Washington's family was heavily invested in iron works for example, knowing they would need the domestic production to fuel the war effort down the line and even placing their foundries in rural, hard to access areas. The history is really rich here in so many ways.
