humanity as a species is pathetic. we cant even build a worldwide network of cargo and people tunnel, cant even build a tunnel under bering straight and roads to it, cant build intercontinental under-sea floating tunnels, hell we cant even have reactor zone on nuclear power plants built underground below the level of ground waters so that in case of an accident all the radioactive material just stays underground and doesnt pollute air and ground waters, and al those things are much cheaper and at leadt as profitable/beneficial, so really i dont think we will have any megaengineering project done in the next 100 years. maybe in 100s of years when labour will be nore automated and the price will drop then we can build something. think about it, if everything from mining resources to the production of all elements of the rocket and its fuel is carried out by autonomous machines, reliable and low on maintenance, we can have 2$ per kilo to orbit via ordinary rockets, and i think we will see this sooner than we see a space elevator or an orbital ring
