Why are you learning Japanese instead of Chinese? Chinese is superior in every way, and you have a higher chance of meeting a chink in your country than a jap.
>>
To consume weebshit without having to rely on garbage translations. I couldn't care less about speaking the language with people in my country.
>>
Well, I started learning Japanese in order to watch anime without subtitles, but my listening comprehension is so bad that I have to watch them with subtitles anyway, only this time they're Japanese subtitles. I guess if I learned Chinese then I'd be reading the Chinese subtitles. Still, I like that the voices phonetically match what's written in the subtitles, and there's the future prospect of relying on subtitles less by getting used to hearing the voice actors' Japanese speech. Therefore, I am happy with my choice to learn Japanese over Chinese. But truthfully, I wasn't considering Chinese anyway.

Okay, the more I get into kanji the more I admire the natural environment of Chinese characters that the Chinese language is. When it comes to that sort of thing Chinese makes Japanese look like child's play. Chinese song lyrics can be very beautiful linguistically. I think it's also much easier to make friends with Chinese people than with Japanese people (Japanese guys are pretty lame and I don't have yellow fever tyvm). However, I don't generally like people, so it's not a priority for me to be friends with anyone. Chinese is still a difficult foreign language, even if you're comfortable with Japanese kanji and all, and it is not easily learned. There isn't much right now to keep my motivation up, were I to start learning it.

As a weeb what I think you need is traditional characters, and their forms should follow the Kangxi dictionary, in which the eternal peak of printing aesthetics was achieved by Qing scholars. Going from Japanese to Chinese, supposed to be the damn original language, shouldn't feel like a downgrade. Even the Taiwanese character forms are weird.
>>
>>91048839
this

Japanese at least has a certain "europeaness" to it, phonologically speaking. But Chinese sounds completely alien and kinda disgusting. Also, the fact that the language is tonal makes it automatically unappealing to learn for gwailos. Finally, the fact that they switched to simplified characters kinda ruins what little appeal their logographic writing system could have possibly had.

I might eventually learn Mandarin before I turn thirty because after Japanese, Chinese seems to be only reasonably difficult instead of very difficult. I feel closer to Chinese grammar than to Japanese grammar even now. It's so ridiculously SVO and direct, it makes English sound complicated and meandering. I'll just hope China manages to make itself more culturally relevant than it is now before I grow old and die.

PRC(簡体) and Japan(国字) are different from Hong Kong /Taiwan(正体字) in the kanji.
As for the grammar, the German bro of languages is close in China.
>>
>>91054020
Yeah but for example 経験 and 经验 are both the same shit. It's the same word. Other words where Japanese has 経, in simplified Chinese will also have 经. It's the same character, only that it looks somewhat different. Entire sentences in Mandarin are readable for Japanese people even in simplified script after minimal grammatical preparation.

By the way, the traditional version of 経験/经验 is 經驗. It is different. But it's the same shit, really.

Grammar takes a short time (other than getting fine nuance). Vocabulary takes a very long time. If your vocabulary is mostly shared because of 漢字, then you end up learning that language easily just because you already sort of know what you're learning. By the way, Chinese grammar is fucking primitive. It's just lining up 漢字 (漢字の並び方が文法、ということ). It makes English grammar look hard.

I prefer the traditional version myself and fault both the PRC and postwar Japan.

Honestly I don't know why the Asian countries have effectively all dropped the Kangxi forms (Korea technically did not but they essentially don't use Chinese characters anymore, which is even more stupid). There is nothing more beautiful. Japan has retained the most of all in use, but still... shinjitai and then "extended shinjitai", which -is- fixing a mess, but it's the wrong damn solution. Maybe I'm just too white to understand.
>>
>>91046159
Those h-games aren't going to translate themselves.
>>
>>91067143
Kanji are beautiful, but man. Imagine writing college notes in that shit. In english I can write "beautiful" in a fraction of a second. To write that shit in japanese takes about 10 seconds if writing reasonably fast. It's easier to read in kanji, but it's easier to write in a phonetic alphabet.
>>
>>91067789
美しい -> 11 strokes
beautiful -> 14 strokes
It's just practice my man.
>>
>>91067789
Speaking for myself, I'd only be able to write "beautiful" in a fraction of a second if I wasn't intending that word to be legible to anyone but myself. I'd need a full second to make it look decent...

Well, computers appear to have saved kanji from further deterioration because anyone can now easily summon even the obscure and complex characters just by typing their sound out. The Japanese simplifications aren't too bad aesthetically, so even if extended shinjitai becomes the norm, I think I'll live with it.

>>
>>91071792

>>
>>91046159
Because Japanese is like a million times easier than mandarin and I can make better use of Japanese than mandarin when I read manga or watch anime without having to wait until translations or subtitles come out. But, I agree with you on that. Considering mandarin has the largest number of native speakers and the growing influence and power of china, it's a wiser choice to go with mandarin.
>>
>>91071951

mandarin grammar is easier. Simplified characters are a lot but, as far as i know, they do not randomly change the way you pronounce them if they are alone, at the start of words or at the end of words.
>>
>>91071885
Yeah. I'm focusing on Japanese more than Chinese because I watch anime
>>
>>91046159
>and you have a higher chance of meeting a chink in your country than a jap.

>>
>>91072042
True that mandarin has easier grammar since its an isolated language but memorising all the characters and getting used to pronouncing words accurately would be a bigger challenge for language learners since pronunciations and accents differentiate the meaning of words. But when speaking Japanese we don't have to care much about our accent or pronunciation like when we speak English with our distinctive accents.
