Let's talk about the Rebuild series and its relation to NGE.

Warning, wall of text incoming!

Now, just a warning to start this off; this is my own impression/interpretation of the series.
I just came around to watching the Rebuild movies the last couple of days and really was impressed which I will elaborate on.
I went ahead and read some reviews and, although I kinda expected it to happen, was mad at all the people shitting on the Rebuilds for not being NGE and EoE.
Those reviews critisized the characters for not being „deep“ enough, meaning that we don't have lengthy character introductions with their personal struggles and backgroundstories being explained.
They also critisized the series for not having as much symbolism as the original and for being more action-oriented.
Now I understand where they are coming from but I can't agree.

So here are some things that I thought about.
About ten years have passed since EoE and as we all know by now, Anno got over his depression and all the other struggles he was facing when making NGE and EoE.
Tons of fans and most probably also the industry pressured Anno to make more NGE.
Anno knew that he was gonna make a series of movies which means that you can't include as much character development as when you are making a 25 episode anime + movie.
Because of all of these reasons Anno decided to make the new series a sequel ( yeah I assume that it is a sequel) of some sort.
Sure, you could watch the series without watching NGE and still kinda „get“ what is going which also is a smart move made by Anno but to really get what is happening (at least in the first and most of the second movie) and who the characters really are( almost only applies for the first movie), you have to know the original series.

I assume that the series takes place in an alternate reality that was created after the third impact in EoE.
The first movie is almost the exact same as the first couple of episodes of NGE but there are several changes. These are supposed to show that this isn't the exact same world that NGE took place in but it doesn't actually imply that the two series are linked, it could just simply imply a reimagination of the world.
Then there is the scene with Kaworu on the moon happens. There is blood on the moon (oh and the sea is also stained red like at the end of EoE) and Kaworu says something along the lines of „Not the third one again“. This whole scene and Kaworu himself link NGE to the Rebuild series.
The purpose of the first movie was to show that although the setting and story may seem familiar, they are actually not the same, it is only somehow related to NGE.
Anno plays with the expectations of the audience and with this feeling of familiarity by only adding some changes to the first movie.

Okay, then we go into this second movie already knowing that the story won't play out the way we expected it to.
We still don't know about the characters though. It seems that none of the characters that were in the first movie were changed. We expect everyone to act and develop like they would in NGE.
Thus comes the second movie to again shit on our expectations and to show again that this is not NGE.
Asuka's namechange is also a symbol for this, she may look and act familiar at first but she is not Asuka Langley Soryu.
The characters develop in the exact opposite direction as they do in NGE. Asuka allows herself to show that she has feelings for Shinji, Rei starts standing up for herself and even starts to understand human interaction, Gendo even wants to grow closer to Shinji and so on.
Everything seems to be going just fine and, at this point, the actual story of the Rebuild series is beginning.
A new character, Mari, is introduced at the start of the movie with a whole new story and third impact is triggered by Shinji.

The third movie starts, 14 years have passed since third impact.
Almost everything is completely different from NGE.
It is also called You can (not) redo, which also makes sense in the story of the Rebuilds.
EoE was released in 1997, Eva 3.33 2012.
I think that this cannot be a coincidence.
It's basically Anno saying: Yeah, I can't redo NGE and I'm not even trying to. You want more Eva, this is how I'm doing it now.
He is telling another story reflecting him moving on from his depression, thus more action scenes because he doesn't want to focus as much on the psychology of the characters.
NGE was focusing more on Shinji and the characters developing, RoE is more about the actual story.

Okay this is really rushed but anyways, I hope you still understand what I am trying to convey.

tl;dr, don't give a shit. Rebuilds are specifically made for the people that were too retarded to get the original series and hated it for it.

>Then there is the scene with Kaworu on the moon happens. There is blood on the moon (oh and the sea is also stained red like at the end of EoE)
This was deconfirmed a while ago.

>>115331028
>Gendo even wants to grow closer to Shinji and so on.
No he doesn't. However it's likely that this new Gendo feels some degree of genuine guilt for his actions.

>>115330906
>They also critisized the series for not having as much symbolism
There is A LOT of symbolism if you actually pay attention. It's just different, with some of it tackling different subjects now.

>>115331199
> Rebuilds are specifically made for the people that were too retarded to get the original series and hated it for it.
Yes and no. It can go both ways.

Oh and the psychological aspects of NGE were more or less the product of no-budget, not so much because Anno wanted to do it. (Though he did, but not to the extent that /a/ believes.)

What is your fucking point?

That the third movie ruined what could have been a respectful new take on EVA?

>>115331076
>>115331028
>>115330986
>>115330949
>>115330906
All right. Reading your conclusion, it's fucking retarded.

>hurr I can't redo EVA
>even if he's fucking redoing it right before your eyes

Did you wolf down a handful of random pills before you wrote this shit?

Here is the ONLY answer you ever need, the one that is the closest to the actual truth:

There is a strong economic motivator to make Evangelion again with Rebuild. For many, many parties in the anime industry. It's a golden goose. Why it's being made is a no-brainer. But that's not the whole story.

Hideaki Anno is remaking Evangelion with the hindsight he didn't have before making it, and Hidaki Anno has no scruples in writing the new Evangelion.

He can change anything he wants, and so Rebuild is essentially his own egoistic self-indulgence. Everything in the Rebuild series is consistent with that - everything. The characters he likes are more important and played up, the ones he doesn't like - well, they're screwed.

That's what Rebuild is. Anno's lack of scruples.

Okay fuck I completely left out my own interpretation of the name of the last movie.
I assumed that this "new dimension" this series is set in starts after Human instrumentality.
So I think that Shinji just somehow decided to redo it all. (That would also explain why he acted all badass at the end of 2.0.)
And now that he is redoing his life he realizes that he can't escape his faith. (you can not redo)
>>
>>115333182
When do you get to the part where you show the meaning in that, or even anything resembling a point?
>>
>>115333275
>He is telling another story reflecting him moving on from his depression, thus more action scenes because he doesn't want to focus as much on the psychology of the characters.
NGE was focusing more on Shinji and the characters developing, RoE is more about the actual story.
>>
>>115333327
But there hardly is a story in RoE, and it's not something you can actually take seriously because of how insanely contrived and dumb the entire thing is.

NGE has more of a story by a longshot. What is your actual point?
