How do I get into Beserk?
Is there a definitive anime to watch, or should I start with the manga?
I tried to read the manga some years ago but different websites had different versions of chapter 1 and I got confused.
Can anyone help me out?
>>
>>115257694
>Can anyone help me out?
Read the manga.
Dark Horse scans
Find them on bakabt
The anime is decent, but a slideshow
The movies are fucking terrible, and any real Berserk fan could tell you why.
>>
>>115257694
watch the movies they tell the story better and then read manga
>>
>>115257694
>>115257747
Pretty much this. I may be a minority on this but I actually think the anime adapts that part of the story (The Golden Age) very well and that some of the changes they made were arguably for the better, especially when you consider the fact that they knew they couldn't adapt the whole story. The movies have some of the most gorgeous artwork I've ever seen in animation when it's not just PS2-era CGI but the story was abridged and butchered beyond belief which unfortunately ruined their potential.

Read the manga and, if you have the time, watch the anime. Only bother with the movies if you're a diehard fan and just can't get enough Berserk in your life. If you reach that point, you may as well look into the video games while you're at it though.
>>
>>115258545
>they made were arguably for the better,
Like?
I've fucking GOT to hear this.
>>
1. Watch the anime, get attached to characters
2. Get angry at the shit ending that isn't canon
3. Pick up the manga out of spite
>>
>>115258742
I like how the anime is a little more grounded in reality than the manga, for the most part. Puck's scene in the first episode being given to a village girl, the torturer being a little more human in appearance, Wyald's lines being given to a normal soldier (I actually do enjoy Wyald's battle in the manga but from a storytelling standpoint, I think having a big monster show up right before the eclipse sort of lessens the impact of the monsters that show up there because it had just happened a couple chapters beforehand, thus stifling the climax. I would have been okay if they had left him in but in my opinion, cutting out Wyald altogether was for the better), all of these I think were wise choices. Also, that group of assassins that was sent to capture the group after rescuing Griffith getting cut was definitely for the better because they amount to little to more than a waste of time in the manga anyways.

There were some things that shouldn't have been cut and it isn't a perfect adaptation of course. There was also the bit about Guts' rape which was an important part of his character that simply should not have been cut. The part revelation that the king lusted after Charlotte also should not have been cut.

I take it you would disagree?
>>
>>115259436
Also, concerning the Black Swordsman arc being abridged/cut, It's a shame but I think they only did that because, as with Puck along with it, that part of the story doesn't become relevant until after The Golden Age and since they knew they were not going that far, cutting it makes sense.
>>
Just read the manga

I heard that the anime is gay and shitty
>>
>>115257694
The best thing you can do to put yourself in the mood is go to your nearest large body of water. Look for a decent sized boat. Get on the boat and sit there, no matter how much the owner or captain yells at you. And stay there. You'll know it's time to get off when your bitterness, anger and sorrow seep into your very soul and the idea of Berserk makes you cry like a manchild.
>>
>>115259654
Sorry, forgot the final step.

Then pick up the manga.
>>
>>115257694
Read the manga, the anime is good but it only covers golden age and leaves out Wyald. You can watch the movies too but bear in mind it's very inaccurate. DO NOT read the hawk scans.
>>
read the first 3 volumes of the manga, watch the anime, watch the third movie, then continue with the manga

christ, berserk is literally the easiest fucking series to get into, there's a manga and an anime, just fucking pick one
>>
>>115259731
the movies arent necessarily bad for the most part,
thye just assumed that the only peeople who were gonna buy this shit were the fans anyways so they just left out all the backstory thinking we knew everything. but certain scenes like with boscogn are simply unforgettably ruined.
>>
It just makes so mad and sad that the only thing that ever got animated was the fucking Golden Age arc. God fucking dammit, shit fuck.
>>
>>115260045
why do you think i bought all the movies? im praying to god my support will pay off one dayso we can finally start seeing some of the actual interesting parts.
>>
Dont
Only suffering await you
>>
>>115259999
The movies were garbage, the only good thing about them is that they animated new material in the third movie, like Skull Knight's fight with Zodd and retard Casca

The anime did all the movies did and more in a better way apart from like a combined total of 12 minutes from the third movie
>>
>>115260119
your right but you gotta realize the time constraints. name me an anime movie that was just a retelling that managed to pull it off correctly. they were just a fun thing on the side to get berserks name out there again.
>>
>>115260119
The only good things about the movies were Aria, some background art and the last minutes of the third movie.
>>
>>115260228
I'm just saying they didn't need to be made, and because they just slapped them together to make money fast, they alienated the people who still give a shit.
>>
>>115260119
>The anime did all the movies did and more in a better way apart from like a combined total of 12 minutes from the third movie

thats fucking bullshit. the bazuso scene in the anime was cheesy as fuck for example, the movie improved on that by a lot. and getting rid of those retarded water splashing scenes were for the better.

>>
>>115257694
If at all possible, find the HQ rescanned manga volumes, the non-Dark Horse one. Dark Horse makes some really stupid translation choices, like name Roderick's country Iith instead of Ys.
>>
>>115260345
Are you fucking fifteen? You can't spell for shit, and you're basically saying that all you want in Berserk is ACTION ACTION ACTION

Were the political scenes in the anime too much for you?
>>
>>115260298
i showed the movie to about 7 of my friends who knew literally nothing about berserk(and made fun of me for it) and they all ended up loving it. now theyre all bugging me to have me bring the second movie, so it does a good job of getting new people into it. on a side note it was annoying how i bad to explain certain shit to them in the middle of the movie though.
>>
Don't bother, since the manga releases at a glacial pace and Miura will almost certainly die before finishing it.
>>
>>115260345
>the bazuso scene in the anime was cheesy as fuck for example
What was wrong with it?
>>
>>115260422
>>115260467
the opening line bazuso says.
>>
>>115260467

ok.
and ill have you know i loved the political scenes.

Fuck off, why are you even mentioning that? You're proving my point that the movies are for fucking idiots who can't enjoy anything that's drawn out

I don't know, I don't find it particularly cheesy. It's clearly not some great dialogue, but it's no big deal.
>>115260522
I think you'd agree with most things I say if you removed your bias.
>>115260572
Maybe more fans would motivate Miura to work on the manga, though.
>>

Non-japanese fans aren't going to motivate Miura to throw the idolmaster disc in the garbage disposal, idiot. I don't have any bias against you, I disagree with you because you're legitimately one of the most mentally-ill people I've ever met
>>
>>115260769
alright, they all tease me and call me gay for watching berserk because they thought berserk was about nothing but big muscly guys with their shirts off flexing their muscles while killing people. im serious btw.
>>
Just read the manga.
After you've finished that go back and watch the movies and you'll understand completely why they're not recommended.

Doesn't sound too far from what was said in the manga. Did they actually change the dialogue in the anime, or is this a case of different translation? Either ways, it's still no big deal. And the anime was way more beautiful than the movies and than the Golden Age in the manga.
>>115260769
>Non-japanese fans aren't going to motivate Miura to throw the idolmaster disc in the garbage disposal, idiot.
Why not? They bring some extra money, too.

>I disagree with you because you're legitimately one of the most mentally-ill people I've ever met
Even ignoring the fact that I'm actually sane, don't you think that disagreeing with me only because I'm "mentally-ill" is pretty illogical? Even mentally ill people can be right.
>>115260825
>because they thought berserk was about nothing but big muscly guys with their shirts off flexing their muscles while killing people.
Well, they're not totally wrong.
>>
>>115260825
Please go back to whatever site you came from, holy shit. I was giving you too much credit by assuming you were 15, you sound like a fucking 12 year old girl
>>115260892
Do you really think every non-japanese Berserk fan is going to import the fucking manga? He's not seeing any of that fucking Dark Horse money from ten years ago
>>
>>115260892
>Doesn't sound too far from what was said in the manga. Did they actually change the dialogue in the anime, or is this a case of different translation? Either ways, it's still no big deal. And the anime was way more beautiful than the movies and than the Golden Age in the manga.

i never said they weren't, but saying the movies improved on literally nothing is just being harsh.
the manga delivered that scene a lot better btw.
>>
>>115260983
we're all friends, we all make fun of each other equally, its a normal thing.
>>
>>115260983
>Do you really think every non-japanese Berserk fan is going to import the fucking manga?
Obviously not. But then, not all Japanese Berserk fan will buy the manga either. It's still an income boost, no?

>He's not seeing any of that fucking Dark Horse money from ten years ago
What do you mean? Why would he agree for the manga to be sold here if he didn't make cash from it?
>>115260984
>but saying the movies improved on literally nothing is just being harsh.
Honestly, the only thing the movies improved on was the sex scenes, and maybe a few fight scenes. Everything else was clearly secondary for them.
>>
>>115259654
If you want pro-level, stay on the boat for 6+ years like Berserk did
>>
I stopped reading berserk when the books went OOP the first time, and i hate reading on a screen

Should i just read as much as I can or try to take it slow and savor it?
>>
Sounds like you're not even interested in berserk dunno what you meant about several 1st chapters, there's prototype, then first 2-3vo lare cheesy as fuck and kinda unreleated to when golden age arc starts in vol2 or vol3, afyer that its the real deal
>>
>>115257747
Also add to just watch the third movie and skip the first two.
And also listen to Aria from the movies and Sign from the games and you're good.
>>
>>115260983
You sound so upset that more people are getting into Berserk because they didn't read the manga, can't possibly comprehend it, and some have a different opinion than you.
I don't give a shit. If more people get into Berserk that means we get more Berserk. It's a win-win faggot.
If anything, you sound like the 12 yo girl who says shit like, "No one can like the band I like more than me and you aren't real fans."
>>
>>115261269
You can't really appreciate berserk from those movies, they are mediocre as fuck
>>
>>115261269
The movies are shitty, they aren't really getting into Berserk if that's all they like. They aren't a good representative of the series
>>
>>115261317
>>115261341

Yeah, I can agree about the movies.
For some people though, that opens them up to wanting more of the story and looking at other mediums of Berserk to check out.
>>
>>115261341
you know, once theyre done with the movies and claim they really enjoy theyre gonna go read the manga to see what happens next. i mean they have no fucking choice its the only they wille ver progress so they will end up reading the manga at one point. its not like theyre gonna be running around claiming theyre really berserk fans after the movies because they fucking arent and im pretty sure they would realize that.
>>
>>115261387
I don't have a problem with that, the issue is with idiots watching the movies and then never bothering to realize there's a 25 year long running manga as well as an anime, and even then they'd just skip them because the anime doesn't look as shiny as the movies.
>>
>>115261387
for some yeah, sadly some who doesn't end up checking out manga keeps thinking that its as lame as movies and that probably keeps miura from sleeping at nights when he's not playing idolmaster
>>
>>115261427
Can you just take half a second to put into typing like you're not having a stroke? If you can't be bothered to not sound like an actual retard, your opinion will forever be invalidated.

Same here. It was a good while ago though, before I bothered discerning between scangroups, so I think I might have read Red Hawk's s (TO THE MARROW OF THE FREAKIN' BONE).

I watched the Abridged series after the Manga. It was by hbi2k I think was his name.
>>

>>115262568
Ah yeah, hbi2k, not Lupinator. It was allright, definitely not bad, but not great either. It's a good way for a manga reader to get an idea of the series' visual style without getting too bored nor spending too much time.
>"In this world, Is the destiny of man truly controlled by some abstract philosophical concept? Is it like solid waste being spewed from the pen of a writer, desperate to add depth to what is otherwise meaningless violence? At least it is true that man has no control, even over his own anime."

The fact that they added in Guts' rape in the first film but neglected his fear of intimacy with others entirely seems like a waste. However, it could've been brought up during his first time with Casca, plus her ensuing healing and the strengthening of their relationship, Guess you can't trust the IM@S character designer for anything.
