Calling all anime and Magic The Gathering fans.
A project has been started. A full anime themed magic set is in the works. We've only just begun but already the sets are starting to take shape.
I, myself, am handling the Magical Girl set, another member is working on the mecha set, and there's rumor of a soon to begin shonen set.
We've started a blog to showcase our progress and get any feedback.
Check it out. If you are into Magic the Gathering then it may grab your attention.
Honestly. I think more people over on /tg/ would care more about this than on /a/. Although, I assume you've already been on /tg/.
True. Magic The Gathering is a pretty old game, but the way it keeps evolving makes it more than traditional.
Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on some Shadowmoor cards.
i used to play MTG
got bored of it since all these new cards are hard to understand, i still adore the invasion set though
oh shit! awesome.
Where's the Loli themed white weenie deck?
Magic the Gathering eh? Well, this is just my kind of thing!
I said "fuck it" during the Odyssey block. I hold Hasbro responsible for screwing it up.
Fear not, there will be plenty of lolis in this set. After all, most magical girls are lolis anyways.
needs more starlight breaker
Oh worry not, such greatness will not be left out.
if you don't include the Sailor Moon gals, the magical deck just wouldn't be complete...and they aren't lolis.
and most white weenie decks are plains only :P
Sailor Moon is in there, just not being showcased right away.
Want some Fate/Stay ones?
Someone posted this here some time ago. It is a nice idea, but prices/effects here are realy weird.
And second one..
I'll save it. It might be useful for the shonen set.
They're 14, you know?
Those cards are bad and you should feel bad.
This is how it is done.
Invasion block, Odyssey block. To this day my favorite two blocks.
Also, Reinforce Zwei needs to be an equipment.
wut? MTG got too hard for your nigger brain to understand??
FUCK YEAH YOU WERE THE THREE BEST YEARS ON MAGIC'S LIFE.
RAVNICA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> INVASION
Honestly I wouldn't know. I fell out of it after mirrodin block.
There's something awesome about invasion and odyssey though. They combine the purity of oldschool magic, with the new abilities of the blocks to follow. After Odyssey block, that purity got lost.
Magic is slipping. Shadowmoor felt like it jumped the shark a bit.
But back on topic. An anime-based MtG set would be Kamigawa returns, with all the legendaries at hand. Also, the cards need work.
Really I'd love to see animu versions of the 5 Invasion dragons, and the 5 Onslaught champions.
Thanks to OP, this is now a BURNING ARISA thread.
Damn, lost my Bannings-tan folder
too bad Arisa is just a normal girl
And that's all I have.
You may now return to your previous topic of discussion.
I've seen a fuckton of Touhou m:tg cards. If you're interested, go ask /jp/.
I would hit Arisa like the fist of an angry Urza.
Badly worded ability. you're looking for "T:taget creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn."
A lot are tl;dr here. needs much streamlining.
Good mechanics, I suppose. Flavor is a bit off, unless you meant her "I am not junk!" vendetta on Shinku or something. Doesn't need blue as well.
Why the hell is Desu black? land animators never really clicked though, only a few were used.
Mechanic is okay. Where the hell is this person getting color schemes? or is it just trying to create tri-color combinations?
Hard to understand? I stopped playing when they came out with...Sixth Edition, I think? Whenever it was that they decided to dumb everything down and forgot that you're supposed to be mages casting spells (Summon spells, where did you go?).
They started printing all the basic land with giant mana symbols instead of text and started explaining all of the abilities in parentheses too. Why the fuck do they even bother naming abilities if they're going to explain what it does on every damned card?
One of the deadly mistakes StrikerS made
Nice, op we were discussing this some time ago (It's even on the archives)
I'll try to contribute asmuch as I can.
Reminder text (explanations in parentheses, like this one) are usually only on the first instance of a ability. every other set gaining that ability doesn't have it any more. Also core sets, because its newfag-friendly.
had this for a while
14 in the beginning, 16 by the end. Anime characters that age - shocking!
Also the mana symbols on lands were mainly an artistic change. It's a land, you shouldn't need text saying how to use it.
Yeah really, I hated it when they changed "summon" to "creature."
You mean the original season, since she's been normal since then.
since A's right?
Guess im one of the few who likes Tempest-Urza era
Tempest was one of my favorite sets (along with Ice Age) back when I used to play.
I remember a card game like that. Ani-mayhem was it's name.
Been working on how to design this card for a while now. Latest version. Comments?
Tempest is one of the best sets of Magic.
imo make it attach to target creature.
there are some very nifty equipment cards that have negative effects, and for the high cost of that sorcery, it'd be fair to have those included.
Graft? Dredge? what block did they came from?
But UBW is used to make your creature kick ass(and you can attach your equips to an untargetable creature due to the wording).
There are only a few equips anyway that have drawbacks useful to attach on enemies, since they were not intended for that use(equip can only target a creature you control)
Also, it has a low cost for an epic spell, since it's pretty risky to play epic spells in the first place.
Thanks for the feedback though, I'll think about it...
Ravnica block. Graft permanents come in to play with +1/+1 counters equal to the graft number. and can move a +1/+1 counter on them to another creatre coming into play.
Dredge cards can be returned to your hand at the cost of a draw and some cards going to the grave.
ITT: OldMtGfags except for OP
OP, "Fading X" has been replaced by "Vanishing X+1". Also, all damage needs to have a source. So:
When Arisa comes into play, it deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
T: Arisa deals 1 damage to target creature.
I would also include the character's last name in the card's title.
Trying to make a common for an anime set is a bit hard, but doable. Just finished this.
misspelled 'until'.. just helping..
Typo. card editor has no spell check.
It hasn't, really. Yes, Vanishing is the new Fading, but all old cards with Fading still have Fading, which just causes the permanent to be sacrificed if you /can't/ remove a counter. Unlike Vanishing, this means you can put counters back on after they've all left. A possibly relevant example is that someone using Clockspinning to remove counters can kill an Aven Riftwatcher, but not a Skyshroud Beast.
I've been playing for a long time and am an incorrigible combo player. As such, I see merit in variations on the same abilities (Flanking vs Bushido, and Rampage vs "When this creature is blocked, it gets +1/+1 for each creature blocking it"). I'm kind of sad that all future stone gazers and poison-wielders are likely to use Deathtouch instead of the myriad variations of past gorgons and basilisks.
I think the cast of Ghost in the Shell would make for good Magic cards. Since Section 9 is all about aggressive information warfare and is more than capable of inflicting damage while at the same time solving mysteries, I figure that GitS creatures would work best doing Magpie/Ophidian/Scalpelexis stuff.
Motoko Kusanagi - 2UU
Legendary Artifact Creature - Cyborg Assassin
Unblockable except by enchantments. Whenever Motoko Kusanagi deals damage to a player, you may have her instead deal damage to target creature that player controls.
Batou - 3U
Legendary Creature - Cyborg Soldier
When Batou deals damage to a player, Scry 1.
Dual Power Up should be green and cost 1G.
+both power and toughness are Green-only mechanic.
Also, a similar green card already exists, except it doesn't give options nor trample at the cost of 2G. So, powerlevel awareness.
Should be Black, cost at least 1B, and maybe increase the cost even further. Demands very, very careful balance check for any Boy/Girl cards.
oh, its also instant? Make that 1BB minimum
Fucking newfags, this shit hasn't been good since Mirage.
Red i suppose for passion/sponteniety. White as the willingness to sacrifice one's life for another. I suggest not hybrid mana. at least WR should do.
I haven't played Magic since that set where everything was artifacts, whatever that was called. Anyways, I think you need a slice-of-life set, or a harem set.
Harem set would be a more creatures=more power set. of course, it's your harem. There will be anti-harem creatures like Makoto. lol
You might want to check the spelling in these cards... Honestly, every card I've seen contain some sort of errors. It drives me mad! lol
Mirage was shit, tempest was great.
What's the matter, too POWERCREEP for you?
I'm looking at you, Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks!
Tempest was a fucking nightmare, it turned the game from something casual to everyone only playing aggro, control, or combo. Shadow is probably the worst designed mechanic to date.
Things were better when games were slow when mechanics weren't Suzaku wallrun style hax and everyone wasn't trying to win by turn two.
Well they have turned creature types into races and classes now, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they added the creatures sex to it.
The Ravnica block was actually good and what got me back into Magic after I dropped it when Mirrodin came out. I never knew multicolor (specifically white-black/Orzhov) decks were so fun and unbelievably expensive! Then again Ravnica block rotated out, so I'm making do with what Time Spiral had to offer. Though...I kinda seriously want to punch Mark Rosewater in the nuts when they came out with the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks.
What, you have to use powercreep to reel newfags in and keep oldfags buying your cards? I ought to punch you in the face for that!
And mirage didn't have phasing. Total rules nightmare. And by winning by turn 2, you meant Vintage, right?
You mean Antiquities?
But wallrun hax are fun. Winning before the game actually starts, on the other hand, not so much. You have to at least let people get to their obscenely fun/convoluted cards in most games, or it won't be as entertaining.
The greatest problem is that you are just playing around with already established cards, sticking unnessesary complicated names and awkward mechanics onto them - you don't bring anything new into the game at all.
I liked Fading better when it was called Vanishing
Meh. Phasing is simple, just obscure. During Untap step, everything phased out phases in, and vice versa. Phased out permanents are not removed from the game, but their leaves-play effect still triggers. (As an example of how Phasing is simple, look at new cards that are more confusing, like Eye of the Storm and various Izzet cards, which all require a very thorough knowledge of stack workings. Phasing, on the other hand, is an order of operations ability, much like First Strike.)
*contemplates Reveillark/Vanishing deck*
Rrrrright... Fading wasn't called vanishing. It was called fading.
Magic's flavor is shit now.
Antiquities, Ice Age, and Mirage were about huge wars and battles, with Mishra/Lim Dul/Kaervek just being a part of it. Tempest, Mercadian Masques, and Invasion were pretty much The Adventures of Gerrard™. I really don't give a shit about that asshole or his friends. I want to see some fucking armies going to war, not some middle aged going around having adventures.
sauce of image please
Invasion was long ago. There have been more wars since then. Now we have paranoid hobbits, psychotic elementals, and crazy goblins all beating on each other, while faeries harvest their dreams and elves try to preserve beauty (which the elementals delight in destroying).
A tip. Should Kerberos be a double card? Like "X happens, turn Kerberos upside down."
That seems like it'd make more sense for transforming creatures.
I hope I'm not too late in the thread, I've already done some magic cards myself, if you are interested I can help you design some stuff, I'll check the blog to see if there's contact info there
Like the Kamigawa flip cards? Sure, if you know what the little and the true form Kero-chan does.
Yeah. I'm not making the cards, just trying to help out with sugestions. You could even use really old anime with the time spiral template. Or even make token cards.
There are many ways you could go with this, just keep asking "Is this all I can do with this card..."
I've been checking the cards, and I decided not to get involved, there are several things that I would do different (like how 99% of the permanents are legendary), maybe it's because you guys worry more about the flavor instead of playability and balance, in any case I think I wouldn't fix in the group, so good luck on the project, anyway
I've observed that the Legendary supertype has always been a problem with making cards based off of anime characters. There's another "problem" I see, and that's how everything so far has been creature-based. There have been sightings of enchantments, instants and sorceries, of course, but those have so far been quite rare (not in the Magic sense). Where are my anime-based noncreature cards?
Also, would anyone be retarded enough to make Haruhi Suzumiya into a Planeswalker card?
I used to play MTG in high school casually, it was a lot of fun, but my friends at the time stopped playing it, so I lost players.
I hope these anime cards turn out decent and not shit-tastic. To create the card's gameplay roles first and then adapt fitting characters or magic into the card's artwork. For example, Guts the Black Swordsman has his cannon on a Fireball-type effect fire card.
Hmm... perhaps that is where you guys should start. Take cards that already exist and apply anime concepts to them. That way you don't create something overly broken.
My college has quite a few magic players, I just got into it myself about a half a year ago.
Yes. And it would be awesome.
Haruhi Suzumiya - 2RU
[+1]: Tap two target creatures.
[-1]: Look at the top four cards of your library and put them back in any order. Clash with an opponent. If you win, Haruhi deals one damage to target creature or player.
[-6]: Each player shuffles all permanents he or she owns into his or her library, then reveals that many cards from the top of his or her library. Each player puts all artifact, creature, and land cards revealed this way into play, then puts all enchantment cards revealed this way into play, then puts all cards revealed this way that weren't put into play on the bottom of his or her library in any order.
You get her excited by going on adventures and digging up cool stuff. You bore her by not doing anything fun. When she gets too bored, she can change everything. ^.^
