What are /a/'s feelings on the original Macross series (or "Robotech" if you're enough of an oldfag to have seen it on TV at some point)?
>>

The OP is hillarious.
>>
I've seen a bit of Macross, looked interesting from what I saw and may watch more, but what the heck is Robotech?
>>
>>11316474
Raped Macross. Avoid it like the plague.

>>11316441
Next to godliness. But sexy aircraft make me hard, so I have my reasons.
>>
Robotech's OP was awesome.

But I only really enjoyed the first episode and the episode where Minmay was singing "We will win" while the epic space battle was going on.
>>
Didn't see much of the original series but DYRL is made of fuckwin.
>>
>>11316474

The American version, which was really three shows mushed together.
>>
Robotech was awesome. First you had the Zentradi rape earth, then you had the Robotech Masters (who are actually earthlings who went back through a time warp or something like that) show up and they had robotanks, and then the Invid came for the delicious flower of life must eat.
>>
I never saw the original macross, but I am old enough to remember watching Robotech. That and Jem were my two favorite 80s cartoons.

I know Robotech is basically the first macross spliced with Southern Cross and....something else, I forget. Anyway, looking back on it, it was a decent sci fi show that has spawned lots of other series, so I'm at least grateful for that.

I watched it a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it. The animation look it's age but it doesn't matter.

As for Macross Do You Remember Love, it's even better. Everything about that movie is fanservice, and I don't mean tits. It's just beautiful done and I think it gave me everything I'd want out of a Macross show.

Macross Plus is also fantastic. I've been kind of avoiding Macross II and 7, though, because I don't want them to ruin my excellent impression of the franchise.
>>
>>11316457
yea having watched the op so many times I just got caught into singing MAACUUROSS MAACUUROSS MAAAACROOOSS!
>>
I actually liked Macross II.
>>
>>11316581

Macross II is underrated imo, and gets a lot more flack than it deserves.

Macross 7 is... polarizing at best (I'm in the "hate it with the passion of a burning sun" camp). I'd say give it a shot at least to see what all the hub-bub is about.
>>
Robotech=bastardized shit, no Kyuun Kyuun, Xiao Pai Long, replaced with terrible Amerikkan songs.

Macross=The original, real deal classic, legendary and iconic show.
>>

>>11316565

As someone who wasn't old enough to see Robotech it just makes me facepalm hard. There's absolutely no way I could watch an entire show where Hikaru is Rick and they have corny crap like Robotech Masters and what have you.

So on the one hand, fuck you Carl Maceck, but on the other I gotta give it credit for spawning a new generation of fans and shows. But still... damn Uncle Carl.
>>
>>11316570

The third show was "Genesis Climber Mospeada"

Robotech was... a necessary evil I think, since the splicing was to get around sydicated episode limits, and the show did introduce a lot of people (myself included) to anime. It was like the DBZ/Naruto of it's day (in terms of being a gateway show).
>>
Only seen DYRL, is it worth it to go back and watch the tv series?
>>
>>11316793

Very much so. You get a more complete and compelling story. Watch out for the up and down animation quality though. Sometimes it's ridiculously good for it's time, other times it will make your eyes bleed.
>>
saw it as a kid, barely remember it.

but that MF2 scene when the mecha's arm was rippe with nyan nyan bitch in it was directly lifted from the original.

that's all I remember

Even Reba West says she would have never sung those songs if she weren't drunk off her ass at the time.

Robotech is just a product of its era, though. In fact, it's probably one of the better products of its era and I've even seen some people on /m/ say that it actually improved the otherwise forgettable Mospeda and Southern Cross portions. Notice no one ever bitches about what HG did to THEM? Just the Macross segment.
>>
I have seen the original macross ages ago on VHS fansubs... I FUCKING LOVED IT
now the thing is i haven't seen any other macross... is it worth to watch them or the original is just too good and i'll be disappointed? or maybe should i only bother to watch some?
>>
Robotech was epic for it's day here in America. It was a intricate part of bringing anime to U.S. audiences.

In actuality creator Shoji Kawamori liked the idea of the 3 generation story put together by Carl Maceck better than his original story. He said it was a creative way to extend his story. He liked it so much that he approved the creation of Robotech II. His company however cut the project after only 3 episodes of it were made. But he did say that if he had though of continuing the story he would have done something like this.

Robotech, well seen it as a 6 year old, with enough censores on our national TV to think it was about the Human Alien wars rather than the love triangle, as kid, I always wanted to beat the living shit outta rick hunter because of the way she treated Lisa... now that I look back Lisa Hayes was the first thing that I can think of as Mei Waifu... to finish off my childhood I download the entire series again a few month ago, I feel like I can die in peace now....

and now for something completely different, goddamn poisoned pinapple sallad! ;_;
>>
>>11316926

Yes. Very much yes.

Macross Plus shouldn't be hard to come by either on DVD or through torrent and Macross: Do You Remember Love should be easy enough to find via torrent, a remastered edition was released a few months ago.
>>
>>11316976

That may be true but it was pretty lame of Harmony Gold to try to monopolize the rights to the show and mess it all up for themselves and everybody else.
>>
>>11317036
so i should just forget about macross 7?
>>
>>11316976

It was an interesting idea, you've got to give it that. It was probably the best of the "combine multiple series to give us enough episodes to syndicate" show that peppered American airwaves in the '80s as well. Most of the others are long forgotten but Robotech is not only still remembered, people are still *passionate* about it, one way or another.
>>
>>11317107

That's what most people really hate them for. They're bastards about the rights even to this day. Maybe it's poetic justice that they've never been truly successful in expanding Robotech beyond the original run. Robotech II was dead on arrival, Shadow Chronicles never really took off, etc.

In regards to Macross 7, I can't say, I haven't seen it. Reviews vary greatly, though.
>>
So what's the reason we can't get a decent release of Do You Remember Love? I've never seen them but I heard we got two absolutely terrible versions not once but twice.

Is it just because of the legal battle with Harmony Gold that we can't get it? But then why was ADV able to put out SDF Macross and Manga Entertainment released Macross Plus?
