Allright /a/, its been awhile since I have watched any anime, but I caught half an episode of Death Note on late night TV and I’m interested in seeing more. I have a couple of concerns though that I think /a/ may be helpful with-
1) I only liked L and Light. Especially L, who seems like a total badass. The rest of the cast, lil’ miss pop star, “I’m an idiot” boy, and “bawww I have a family” guy are the types of character I stopped watching anime because of. ‘Whats the ratio of good character screen time’:’Bad character screen time’?
2) This was the dubbed version. L sounded amazing, Light was very typical “I’m anime protagonist guy!” and the rest of the cast was meh to annoying. Is the subbed version any better? Does L have similar vocal inflections? (if you can see the pattern, I really just liked the L character)
3) Is the series worth watching? Let me know your opinions.
1) around 5:1
You'll find the other characters more awesome when you watch from the start
2) Watch BOTH. DO IT.
3) Just as planned
I guess it's natural for you to dislike it because of the ladies.
don't watch deathnote after episode 15
watch the subbed, Ryuk sounds ok, but subbed is always better, you never know what they will take out in a dub
>>10266545 episode 24
That way L LIVES FOREVER
Nothing special happens at 15, but shit goes down at 25
L dies and Ryuk kills Light.
The dvds are always uncut, the script is the only thing that changes
so i heard you guys like cake?
Light the protagonist. Ha.
A. the episode you watched is mediocre for DN standards
B. You don't realize how awesome Light is because you have no idea what the hell is going on.
C. Watch it from the beginning, you'll like it a lot more.
D. No, L sound completely different in Japanese. I was rather suprised by his awesome dub voice. I dare say it's better.
IN B4 SPOILERS
Many consider episode 7 to be the pinnacle the show has to offer. I guess one could stop watching after that and die happy, but if you're more normal and want to finish things, it's worth watching.
I guess I should have said IN AFTER SPOILERS but it took me a minute to write it
Light is Kira. Ha.
I thought the last episode was just amazing.
>B. You don't realize how awesome Light is because you are sane. Only emo kids who pretend Desu Noto is DEEEEEEP like Light because they wish they could kill the bullies at their High School with a Death Note too.
Who would have thought LIGHT IS KIRA was a spoiler
I acknowledge the subs as the official script, but everything flows better in english to a native english speaker. The voices aren't bad. To be honest, When I was listening to the japanese speakers, they more often than not seemed more bored than anything. Your mileage may vary
>>B. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW I DON'T LIKE DEATH NOTE BECAUSE IT'S POPULAR BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW
Light wasn't anything special for a character. Most side characters top him. L, Mikami, Fucking Near top him.
reported for being the devil
I never liked Death Note. I was the one trolling Desu Noto threads back when /a/ was still creaming their pants and making stickies over it.
lol dubs. lol trolls.
Light was already dead
Was already aware of spoliers (such as they are) but that doesn't bother me much. I'm off to find a DL of the sub!
Just like people who hate Lucky Star only hate it because it's popular, right?
Why did /a/ turn into such shit after the split?
How the fuck can you put so much failure in a filename?
I do like Light though. It's rare we see a character whose actually evil and wins. He's the reason I read the manga back when it was coming out in Japan.
L I didn't care for at all until people started obsessing about him, and he grew on me. He's the one who seems unoriginal to me, typical super-detective type.
Wait, did the screenshot about 5s end in a 5? i lol'D
Well Light currently isn't acting like himself. He forgot he's Kira. He's completely out of character.
Watch him when he's hilariously evil. It's awesome.
psudo get is psudo
I don't like it anymore because it is popular now. I don't even want to talk about it in a comic book store or anime club because of all the fucking weeaboos trying so hard to be like L. Fucking mainstream ruins everything.
>Why did /a/ turn into such shit after the split?
>after the split?
Get the fuck out.
Just kill /jp/ already. Give me back my old /a/, I can't stand the newfaggotry.
Seriously, it's way worse now.
In before /a/ WAS NEVER GOOD.
He's winning the entire time until the end. I always root for the evil characters.
GOD WAS NOT EVIL.
You do know that you don't have to talk to shitty weeaboos in Borders right?
Why the hell do you even talk to them in the first place?
I am sick to hell of the fandom, yeah, but I still like the series just as much as I ever did.
>In before /a/ WAS NEVER GOOD.
>/a/ WAS NEVER GOOD
>/a/ WAS NEVER GOOD
>/a/ WAS NEVER GOOD
>/a/ WAS NEVER GOOD
>/a/ WAS NEVER GOOD
/a/ turned to shit about a year ago when Moot closed off /b/ for a week
For a week /a/ was in anarchy and hasn't been the same since.
just for you
Weeaboos, goths, same fuckin difference. It still increased the number of visible retards significantly.
i think you should gtfo
You could probably say that about ANY popular series.
Look, I was into DN before it was mainstream. LONG, LONG before. I'm not changing my opinion now.
I don't go there, nor do I associate myself with such kind. There are some decent people at my comic book store though.
Hm, same here, I miss the discussions.
>intellectual [...], Sephiroth loving fat teenagers with a fucking retarded view of justice
That describes me surprisingly well. I like Death Note.
If you can't tell the difference in quality of posts after the /jp/ split, you either don't come here too often or you're browsing with 90% of the threads hidden.
I don't get why people think this would appeal the goths? Is it the imagery because aside from the Shinigami imagery and Misa's clothes, that's about as 'goth' as it gets.
so where is the missing quality then? cause it sure as shit didn't go any where near /jp/.
Old /a/ was decent. New /a/ and /jp/ both fail.
I'm assuming because goth mindset relates to Light's? No fucking idea.
/a/ sucked before the /jp/ split.
How? I like to hear why you think it's so ridiculous.
Goths are usually obsessed with death and killing everyone they hate (WHY CAN'T THEY ACCEPT ME JUST CUZ IM DIFFRENT?!).
Its a show where a teenager kills people by writing nasty thoughts in a diary. That is about the most goth thing I ever heard.
EVERY EVENT THAT LEADS UP TO 'JUST AS PLANNED'.
In the end, it's just as Ohba and Obata say: It's entertainment, and I love Death Note for the camp it is.
Light doesn't kill people just because he hates them. He just kills everyone he thinks the world would be better without.
I'm sure a lot of pubescent teenagers dream of doing what he does, but that still doesn't make it goth. And who cares, really? Goths embrace and ruin a lot of things that were actually great to begin with.
Every? The Yotsuba Group Arc was a stretch, but I admired Light for doing a really fucking crazy thing that should have went wrong. But to have an actual story, you have to make it happen.
.../a/ has really become more stupid.
>>10267133 Argh, don't make me point out all the flaws all over again. I've done it so many times on /a/ in the past few months its not even funny.
Don't bother. Flaws in entertainment are relative.
Every piece of literature are stringed though events that would never run that smoothly in real life. That's why you hafta have a suspension of belief when reading/watching anything.
so did you make some copypasta? i'm sure it would be used a lot and handy in such occasions.
When I was following the manga during its run, I didn't like either Light or L. The anime had me like them a bit more, but it was the novel that made me _really_ like L for some reason. He's one of my favorite characters now.
Suspension of disbelief means the ability one has to ignore the fact that something is unlikely, improbable or even impossible for the sake of enjoying a show.
In this case, an entire nation started acting in a completely impossible way. Yes, that killed my suspension of disbelief.
I hate detective animu and love Death Note.
So obviously it's a different audience.
I know what you said. But I am an intellectual Sephiroth loving fat teenager with a fucking retarded view of justice. So I removed the word "pseudo."
Everyone I know that claims to be an intellectual is a fucking retard.
I don't really claim to be one, I was just running with the tripfag's original post.
I watched it for the characters
Anyone that claims to be intellectual is a retard.
Sexy B fanart is sexy. I loved the novel.
I tried to read the novel, but my standards for quality in anime and books are two different things.
I can stand crazy impossible plot twists in anime, but I'm NOT reading that garbage. I tried, couldn't do it.
The book is garbage. Manga and anime are fine.
Picture related. How much failure can you find in that screenshot?
I don't even know why I still go to that forum. I registered back in 2002, it's completely dead now.
The book was mediocre, but I kept reading because I wanted to know more about the characters.
>Goths are usually obsessed with death and killing everyone they hate (WHY CAN'T THEY ACCEPT ME JUST CUZ IM DIFFRENT?!).
i don't think you know any goths.
Its a good watch, but god the ending sucked shit beyond belief.
You guys have no taste. NISIOISIN is one of the best Japanese writers of young adult fiction.
I made it to the end of the first chapter, after the intro.
When Light comes out from under the bed I said THAT'S FUCKING IT.
Worst twist I've ever read in a book.
Why do you get worked up over what a bunch of strangers think? This is why the 'You rage you lose' threads in /a/ never work on me.
Honestly, who gives a shit about whether this girl thinks she's an intellectual or not?
I just took the screenshot and cropped the image. I swear I didn't change anything. It's exactly as bad as it looks; a Naruto and MySpace fanboy claiming to be an "intellectual."
He's one of the biggest retards on those forums, too.
Well I don't read young adult fiction. Despite being a weeaboo I have adult tastes in books.
Currently reading something by Kate Chopin.
I'm assuming you mean L, right? What's wrong with that, exactly?
It's a guy. And that's a once somewhat popular, now very small forum where everyone has known each other for years, met IRL, etc. The only girl I fucked in my life was from there (I'm serious).
Putting up with this guy is just way too much for me.
I wish I can agree with you, but the shit that happens in certain countries like Amerikkkans make me believe that, yes, people can be pretty stupid when scared.
Give Light credit, it took years to sway most of the country.
That wasn't Light.
She's in the room for what, an hour? And she's talking to him on the phone. I'm supposed to believe she doesn't hear him under the bed? She's an expert FBI agent and she doesn't even look there to begin with?
And what the fuck was he doing there? If I were him I'd fire her for not figuring that one out.
I didn't even care to find out why he was there. It was too stupid.
typo. Somehow I'm always typing L or Light when I mean the other.
If that's the only reason you quit reading, you're an idiot. I would have to ruin the whole book to elaborate.
Read the whole book and you will be satisfied. The twist rivals JUST AS PLANNED.
That wasn't L either.
well that explains why he was being stupid
still...she's an idiot for not noticing
Damn, you spoiled him.
sometimes spoilers are good
I might reconsider reading it now, if I'm ever at Borders and there's nothing better to read for free
Question: I've seen all of Death Note, but I don't remember the name L Lawliet coming up. Did it?
Never did. The only time you knew was with the fanbook.
It was revealed in How to Read 13, the guide book.
Wikipedia, in my case. Lol.
Do yourself a favor and finished that shit. If anything, it's at least well written, even if you think the plot is bullshit.
Beyond Birthday's motivation for killing is slightly more unbelievable than Light leading L closer to suspecting him (thus leading him closer to L, too) or Light setting up all that shit with Near instead of having Mikami bring an uzi and blowing everyone away (pride, lol), but BB's crazy, so I accepted his motivation.
But still runs into just as many doors
>>10267803 BB's crazy
Light was right.
Right was light.
Fuck off. Read it online. I work at Borders and shitheads like you fucking ruin the books by bending the covers and shit, and then they never sell, and then we have to rip the covers off and throw them away. Fucking waste of paper and books because faggots like you can't either buy your goddamned manga or read it online.
The series is very good. It made me buy every Death Note book. Brilliant shit.
It's not manga. I haven't looked hard, but I don't believe it's online at all.
How does that affect you, dickwad?
Two chapters were translated online, but the chick (lol) who was translating it stopped when it was licensed. Plus, the official translation is better anyway.
I'm the one that has to rip the covers off and throw the books out. It's painful to see a waste of paper. We have to shred them and throw them out, too. We can't even recycle them.
haha something not on the internet? This took me all of 30 seconds.
And what do you mean its not a manga?
I mean I was talking about the novel, not the manga. I read the manga online as it came out.
I can imagine why throwing away perfectly good copies of manga in a completely wasteful way would be painful for any weeaboo.
Why don't you just take them and pretend you destroyed them?
haha my bad then. Real novels covers don't get fucked over like that.
managers watch to prevent that from happening. It's all quite fucked up. It's like how at McDonalds or other food places you have to throw out unsold food, you can't eat it, though its perfectly fine.
How often does that happen?
That's pretty lame but I always see people reading in Borders and Barnes & Nobles and since the staff doesn't seem to care I do it plenty myself.
Then why the fuck don't they destroy the books themselves?
do you even know how a bureaucracy works?
at any given moment at a store, theres at least 100 books that are waiting to be ripped to shreds. Can't say for B&N, but you know the customer is always right? Borders lived for that. If you cause a big enough scene, and complain to corporate, it doesn't matter how wrong you are, you can get like whatever you want. Like, call borders, put a book on hold, and come back in a couple days later. Then throw a huge tantrum, saying that the employee said it was 10 dollars less. If you do it enough, they'll give it to you, but depending on the branch, you might have to bitch to corporate. The managers have to do anything to satisfy the customer, even if it means a loss of up to 200 dollars.
With that in mind, imagine an employee telling you not to read the manga if you won't buy it because it fucks it up.
Fuck it, that makes me rage... though probably not enough to stop reading them every once in a while. At the least I'm going to start handling books in the store like they could blow up at any moment and kill me.
If all they're going to do is to stand there and watch you do something simple and effortless like shredding a book, they might as well do it themselves. Otherwise, why are they getting paid?
depends on the books. When I check out manga, I open them as little as possible. When you have to tear apart 400 books for no reason, you start to get upset.
But don't be too anal about it. That won't help matters either. And we don't destroy hardcover books. We send those back.
I think its a question of money. Its probably cheaper for the companies to print new books than to get them sent back.
again, do you understand how a bureacracy works? That's exactly why they get paid. To watch me shred books.
Think of the most inefficient way of doing things. Then double the inneficiency. That's a bureacracy. Know why the DMV sucks? Bureacracy.
Death Note is good, but don't expect anything more than entertainment. The author said it was supposed to be an entertaining suspense thriller and nothing more. It's not supposed to be thought provoking or even social commentary.
