If it really is an alternate retelling of the series, then perhaps this is the best way to go. One of the many problems I had with the Escaflowne film was that everything was just too rushed and had so much left unexplained by the end. It might have had a different feel from the TV series, but it was clear that the director wanted to parallel so many of the series' events and in the end it fell flat on its face for not having enough screen time.

Here's to hoping the Gurren-Lagann films do it better (if that's what they're even setting out to do at all, that is).
