Hey /a/

I just finished watching the entire Cowboy Bebop series. Wow, absolutely incredible, I will be thinking about it for weeks.

So, here's the thing. I don't really like Anime, but I loved Cowboy Bebop. Could any of you folks recommend me other series I may like? Stuff that's artistic without being pretentious, action-packed without being mindless, and easy-to-follow storywise without being too simplistic. It doesn't have to be like Bebop thematically, but I want an anime of the same caliber.

Thanks!

Hmmm. Starship Operators.

Kemonozume

Samurai Champloo, the only other anime made by the same guy.
I think it's equal in quality, although most disagree.
Also, Baccano.
Maybe Hellsing, although it might fall into the mindless catagory a little.

Ghost in the shell series i believe is of the same caliber anime wise as bebop, you wont be disappointed.

If your looking for something similar to bebop Black lagoon is where it is at but its somewhat inferior than bebop if compared.
>>
>>10245084
GITS is a lot more complex and I found boring. I doubt he'll like it.
Actually I've found GITS fans and Bebop fans to be consistently opposite.
>>
Baccano and Trigun.
>>
>>10244978

No. If CB is the only show you really like you're not going to like anything else and you sure as hell don't belong here.

GTFO.
>>
>>10245197
Yeah i skipped past that part where he said "easy story". Caliber wise its they are just about the same in my book, and i didn't really find GITS that hard to follow.
>>
>>10245247
Oh STFU Cowboy Bebop was the first anime a lot of weeaboos started with.
Seriously, it's pretty common. I hated anime until I watched CB. Now I love a ton of them.
OP, look for anime known as seinen. That's the catagory you want.

OP here:

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I have a bit of an addendum.

One of the things that scared me away from Anime was the over-the-top themes. Things like cat-people, weird magic, bright colors, akward looking characters, stuff like that. One of the main reasons I liked Bebop was that it was so down-to-earth, even while they were flying around and fighting genetically altered humans I never lost my immersion into the series.

Not to sound picky, but I admit I have a bit of a closed mind when it comes to anime. If I see a a series with too much zaniness I won't give it a chance. I'm not proud of it, but it's the truth.

pic related, it's what I don't want.
>>
OP really does need some nice seinen mangas, but since this is anime...

Try Berserk. If you enjoy it at all, take a further plunge and read the manga.
>>
>>10245286
Keep that mindset and you'll miss gems like Potemayo and Simoun. The premises are pretty absurd but they're great.
>>
>>10245286
You don't realize that like 50% of /a/ agrees with you. You're a seinen fan. You hate shonen. Join the club.
Personally I'd recommend Monster (as down-to-earth as it gets), Baccano, Samurai Champloo, and Berserk (don't let the macho style distract you.)
You might like Hellsing but it's very violent for the sake of violence. Maybe Death Note even.
Trigun is better than it looks, but I doubt you'll make it far enough to find out.
>>
def samurai champloo hellsing and black lagoon
>>
>>10245339
Berserk's style isn't very macho if you ask me. The art is actually quite elegant and the details are incredible.
That said? ULTRAVIOLENCE.
>>
>>10245282

Go fuck yourself. "Cowboy Bebop is the only good anime"-type fans are a fucking cancer. If he can't find more than 1 show he can enjoy on his own he should GTFO and not come back until he can.
>>
>>10245286
Darker than black i think would be a good suggestion. Its got that down to earth bebop vibe without being too over the top.
>>
Try GUNGRAVE. Just don't watch the first episode.
>>
>>10245375
I wouldn't say it is the only good anime, just one of the best animes.
>>

>>
>>10245375
Cowboy Bebop is possibly the best anime ever made IMO. That doesn't mean it's the *only* great anime I love.
The OP obviously just hasn't been exposed to things that suit his tastes like the rest of us. Stop trolling and let some one else have different tastes from your moeblob shit for a change.
>>
>>10245339
Excepting that %90 of /a/ is into traps, moe, and DFC.
>>
I think you should watch Samurai Champloo, it's at the same level as CB.
>>
I'm pretty surprised nobody has dropped a recommendation for Akagi or Kaiji yet. While a little different, maybe less outright action packed (it's action of a different kind), they're down to Earth animes that fit right in with something like Cowboy Bebop.

The art might take a little getting used to, but I think it fits perfectly for what they're going for.
>>
>>10245401

I'm not trolling faggot, now am I a fan of Moe shit. I'm telling him to go the fuck away until he's found more than 1 show he likes. There are plenty of resources he can use to find a show, he doesn't have to come here and ask us.
>>
I agree with a lot of the other reccomendations (Outlaw Star, Big O, Berserk, Hellsing [on Hellsing: Even though people are warning you the violence gets rather mindless, I'd say it's still something you'd enjoy]), also check out Beck and Death Note. They fall under the shonen category (which, people will tell you to avoid shonen series and go for seinen series. Don't follow that too closely. There's some good shonen that's not generic over the top fighting anime, and not all seinen is even close to what you're looking for, some of it tends to just be pedophile fanservice).

tl;dr: Watch Death Note, Beck, and, when it ends in about a month, Kaiji.
>>
Go for Berserk
>>
>>10245495
So basically your purpose is to complain about asking for recommendations rather than actually contribute to an otherwise perfectly legitimate thread.
Thanks.

I was giving him a valid recommendation. Go find something on your own. It's a pretty fucking pointless thread when you say:

Now go climb a wall of dicks, faggot.

OP here: Huge thanks to everyone who helped. I took a mental note of the shows that were recommended multiple times, and will check them out.

If by some miracle this thread hasn't 404d by tomorrow morning I will check again. Otherwise, I'll make a new topic based on what I learned here.

tl;dr thanks!!!

Tekken the movie is a masterpiece that anyone with an even remote interest in anime owes to themself to see.

Air Gear is probably the best TV series i've seen. Highly recommended.

Also if you can get your hands on it there's a Korean animation movie called "Protectors of Universe" which is excellent. I've only been able to find it dubbed in english, but even the dub is solid and this is coming from a diehard sub watcher.

Enjoy.
>>
I'd recommend:

First Gundam Movie Trilogy
Maison Ikkoku
Rose of Versailles
Perfect Blue
Gunbuster
El Hazard: The Magnificent World

Those should be fairly good starting points. All of them are typically considered classics and you can use this to see what type of stuff you like and branch off from it by watching stuff from the genre or creator. For example if you like First Gundam you could:

A. Move on to it's sequels starting with Zeta Gundam.
B. Watch other shows from the same creator (Tomino) like Ideon or Dunbine.
C. Watch other real robots mech shows like Votoms
>>
>>10245575

Yes.

OP will like Elfen Lied, I guarantee it.
>>
>>10245606
YES!
>>
>>10245580
Really, do you have to insult me in every post? And somehow you're not trolling?
And believe it or not, figuring out what anime to watch when you don't know shit is a serious challenge. There really aren't many resources. Also, he made it pretty clear what exactly he wanted.
Notice there are a lot of repeat answers. Notice how there's less than maybe 20 series being named. Notice how successful this was despite your faggotry.

OP again: To whoever this is

Thanks for arguing with the troll for me. It's 2am and I can not be bothered. Feel free to ignore him now though, let him get bored so he can wander away.
>>
No way will Elfen Lied put him off anime or make him think we're a bunch of sadistic pedophiles. Certainly that's not at all what will happen.
>>
I think the first anime I ever watched was Samurai Champloo.
>>
>>10245689

That's what Lucky Star is for
>>
>>10245654

Wait, what? Are you letting him watch everything else in this thread? HAHAHA, OH WOW.
>>
>>10245714
I'm targeting the worst anime first.

Elfen Lied is a prime target.
>>
I think Ghost Slide is right up your alley!
>>
My first animu was Sailor Moon. OP, I think you might enjoy it.
>>
OP perfectly describes Gurren Lagann.
>>
>>10245647

You resorted to insults in your first reply, i'm merely returning the favor. If I were trolling you wouldn't know it.

There are actually tons of resources for finding shows and it's extremely easy to find information on them at this point. He gave details of what he wanted but it was all meaningless doubletalk which ends up being totally subjective.

The only reasons why he's getting similar replies from people is that they're all naming other catch all shows that have large fanbases regardless if they're the type of show the OP is asking for (usually not). It's a worthless fucking thread, the OP should got he fuck away, and so should you.
>>
>>10245737

So bright colours scare you away from a show, but you were willing to put up with 26 episodes of Faye's banana-yellow hotpants?
>>
If you are finding for selfcontained stories and good anime here's a couple:
-GunXSword(it looks more like trigun with mecha but is rather good on action scenes)
-Gungrave (if you don't mind char development look the first block of eps, but keep in mind that while they are not shhoting each others the pace will crawl)
>>
Potemayo.

Seriously though, 4chan is not the place for anime recommendations. Anyone who bothers to take the time to respond to this thread will be a troll telling you to watch exactly the opposite of what you're looking for. Try asking at any of these places, these guys will give you serious answers:

Anime on DVD's forums
Animesuki's forums
Animenation’s forums

Don’t ask at Anime News Network’s forums because the moderators are very strict and lock recommendation threads on sight.

If you don’t want to wait for replies, try looking around in these anime databases until something piques your interest:
http://www.anime-planet.com/
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php
