What are some good, epic anime that tackle complex issues? I mean like Ghost in the Shell-type stuff. I'm going to Japan in 3 days and I'm stocking up my iPod with stuff to watch.

I agree with Boku no Pico. Pedophilia is a very serious issue.

Tackle complex issues? Since you mention GITS, I'm guessing you mean philosophical and psychological, and not abortion.

Fuck yeah, and so is Ergo Proxy.
But if you're a between-the-lines reader, the mind fuck in these anime is awesome and godly.

Just about all the Gundam series deal with war and the ethical issues involved with it. I recommend 08th MS Team. Gundam SEED if you'd like to throw racism into the mix.

Also consider Mahoromatic, for it's exploration of the impermanence of life.
