Is Urusei Yatsura worth watching? Or am I mislead by the funny BBC dubs I've seen years ago.
I haven't reallly watched older anime, but I would like to start.
it's an alright place to start. Lum is a god tier Waifu, and each episode has a few funny moments.
Lum is delicious.
It's supposedly funny. I watched it and don't agree but everyone is different.
It's weird to think this is the same guy who made Inuyasha.
pretty sure it was a girl.
Actually, it's a woman. Yeah, she went away from funny manga to more supernatural stuff, lately. I'm tempted to check out her newest one, but I'm not sure if it would just be more Inuyasha or if it could be good like Ranma and UY.
You may want to check out Ranma 1/2 while you're at it.
Fantastic OP/ED for all seasons. Dick will tingle at the sound of "I, I, You and Ai."
If you never watch any of UY other than one thing watch the second movie. You don't really need any context for it (other than Lum is an alien and everybody wants to bang her except Ataru who's sick of her) and your mind will be completely blown.
For the shorter version the second movie is this stretched out to an hour and a half.
Sounds good. Thank you.
Found it on youtube, I had trouble finding a good download that worked.
>Is Urusei Yatsura worth watching?
Are you one of those endless people complaining about endless harems with spineless MCs? Ataru is the exact opposite. He is the best MC who actively tries to get with every girl he sees.
Are you tired of boring harems which focus on endless fanservice but have not much else? Urusei Yatsura touches on basically every theme out there. From comedy to scifi to action to the paranormal. Because it has no set theme. Variety is its greatest strength.
Basically, Urusei Yatsura set the standard for harems. And few shows have really had the amount of variety or strength of characters it had. The only downside to it is the 'dated' animation and its length. But yes, it is worth watching. Especially the later seasons and movies.
It's a great series with several great movies.
The only major flaw about the animated works is that the first season of the TV show is shit compare the heights it reach later on and that the OVAs reach later seem to lose steam.
But as a comedy show, it's one the best that anime has, it contains so many beautiful moments in it. Towards the end of the TV series, you see that the team working on the series fully knew how to encapsulate the feeling of nostalgia.
In several ways, UY feels like the Simpsons of anime where you really see that this show does it first all the time.
I'm a bit jealous that a lot of people will able to watch UY for the first time in Bluray quality.
It's pretty damn good but it takes a while to pick up. Movies are great as well.
>The only major flaw about the animated works is that the first season of the TV show is shit
If your only judgement on that is the animation, you're an idiot. The first season was done by many of the same people who worked on the later stuff. Including Mamoru Oshii, the guy who directed the first 2 movies (the best UY movies). And of course, he's famous for stuff like Patlabor and Ghost in the Shell.
The first episode of Urusei Yatsura is still one of the best.
It's probably one of the most experimental anime series of the 80s. The variety/length ratio is very good.
I'd suggest picking it up, though the first season is pretty bad in comparison to the rest of the show.
I don't know. I just remember the first season featuring far too much Ten than was needed.
Eh, the show didn't really catch me as very interesting until they ditched the two skits per episode setup in the second season. I don't know what happened exactly but it was around that time that I got hooked.
Lum the Forever is better than Only You and comparable to Beautiful Dreamer. Yamazaki is a very talented director as well.
>this will never sleep next to you
Almost 20 years ago, one of the very first things I ever saw subtitled was an episode of Urusei Yatsura. Some Christmas Special where all the characters were fighting over climbing a Christmas tree. I didn't understand who any of the characters were or what the hell they were doing, but it was one of the funniest things I ever saw.
I've been trying to watch the whole show now waiting for that episode to come up but its taking forever. I'm worried that its some episode near the end of the series around episode 190 or something...
I'd rather have Shinobu. Watching Ataru this whole show when he could have had her in episode 1 is really torture.
I know what episode you're talking about, it's sort of in the middle.
Really good one, too.
She threatens to kill him in the manga, not marry him.
So, hows the manga?
Ten isn't introduced until much later in the manga. So there's a plus.
Ryoko is best girl.
>they turned the alien cat girl from white with blonde hair to tan with brown hair
I laughed on episode 50
>Lum's voice actress is the short girl in the white shirt and suspenders.
Finally a man of fine taste.
The anime ended on one of the highest notes you can.
>Cameos by the Dirty Pair girls.
>Cameos by Kenshin
>Cameos by other Rumiko characters
>Every major and minor character ever to grace the series shows up.
Shinobu is pretty good anon but picking her over Lum is just unthinkable to me.
It's because she saw how popular inuyasha was
Shinobu fags are just as bad as Ayeka fags.
It helps that the second film was distrubuted by Toho, aka the Godzilla factory.
Lum fags are as worse as Naru and Asuka fags. You know your girl is going to win from the beginning but you still bitch about all the other girls.
I hate Asuka. I love Rei. I'd slide down her, man.
Those guys are pretty funny
Yeah, and they're age appropriate. They're over 50, they watched Urusei Yatsura.
The new one is more like UY and Ranma. It's mostly just gags per chapter, rather than a big long adventure quest like Inuyasha.
It seriously boggles my mind that the chick who made this and Ranma did Inuyasha.
I mean just how do you fall so far?
Oh god I agree wholeheartedly. Seriously, why would you pick the boring girl? I guess it would make life easier, but infinitely less interesting.
>as bad as Ayeka fags.
I'm a Lumfag and personally I always liked Ayeka over Ryoko. She's better looking for one and Ryoko was always the one provoking fights with her for no fucking reason.
The fuck? She never won anything.
That cunt has fans? Most people like Mutsumi or Motoko.
Everyone, check out the other manga by Rumiko Takahashi, like Rumic World, Rumic Theater, and try to spot the cameos from her more famous series.
>The fuck? She never won anything.
she won the Jizzand also the anime, the manga and one spin off(i think)
But does she have a slide?>>102297107
Low blow anon, low blow
She writes very good horror short stories, and actually can put together some really awesome crazy shit (like the Mermaid books). Nothing was wrong with Inu Yasha from the outside - the setting and characters were good, it was meant to mix her horror side with the romance angle.
The thing is, Inu Yasha was just TOO FUCKING LONG. She wanted to write an epic for the sake of writing an epic, when she should have focused on having a tight story. It would have ended up long anyway but there was a lot of filler.
I read many of her other works, like the Mermaid stuff, the short stories, and Maison Ikkoku, but even I grew tired of Inu Yasha.
56 fucking volumes. Half that would have been enough.
>Jizz scene = Wining the EVA
You're going with that as a "win"?
They met on a train for 5 seconds and never saw each other again.
She didn't win shit.
AGAIN, DOES SHE HAVE A SLIDE!?>>102297107
Did she make it that long just for shits and giggles? Was there any editorial pressure there like how Toriyama had for Dragonball? I mean surely it wasn't just because she wanted a steady cash flow. She created two of the most popular manga ever; she probably had a fair bit of walking around money.
How is a girl with anger issues, wild swings of jealousy and super strength 'boring'? Just because you find those features annoying? That's the epitome of opinion. If anything, she has all the same trademark characteristics of Lum, just without the overly bubbly ignorance and attachment to Ataru.
>How is a girl with anger issues, wild swings of jealousy and super strength 'boring'?
She's only like that around Ataru and then around Mendo (when she liked him).
Other then that she's pretty average and a very nice girl. I don't hate her like the others but I do think Lum is more interesting.
>The only major flaw about the animated works is that the first season of the TV show is shit
That's the problem with all her manga, including Urusei Yatsura. She establishes strong characters and a premise. Then draws out that same premise with no other change or development for fucking ever until the sales for her manga start to fall. And then wraps it up with a cheesy 'they lived happily ever after' ending we all knew was coming since the first chapter.
The first time you read one of her manga, this is okay. But if you try to read multiple versions of her manga, you recognize its all the same character archtypes, story patterns and drawn out shit. And you get tired of it. At least the Urusei Yatsura anime changed up tons of her storylines to make it more interesting and stand the test of time. And if the anime developers hadn't had the forsight to do this, then people wouldn't have even bothered watching the anime version of Ranma 10 years later. At least not past season 3 (since everything after that is the fucking Happosai show and the same damn cliche plots from the manga repeated endlessly).
I'm kind of in the opposite camp. But that's because I specifically like the 'nice girl' and think they're overlooked in anime. I find Lum to be way cliche and highly predictable after about the second season.
If anything, Lum was more of a loose canon and angry in the first two seasons. Then after that, she just becomes this totally happy and care free girl who only shows any range of emotion whenever Ataru does something. She basically becomes Belldandy with fits of jealousy. (Or more accurately, she becomes Samantha from Bewitched).
Looking at Bluray torrent 53gig for first 21 episodes. Expand that out to 195 and that's 492gig I think I'll go find the old ones if they exist.
I never watched the anime but she was more like Shampoo in the manga. However unlike Shampoo she only got pissed when Ataru would jump other girls or when other girls looked like they were trying to get with him.
Mainly in the first season Lum was considered the 'villian'. She schemed, she plotted, and even attempted aggressive seduction. But then Rumiko's plans for Lum changed when people started LIKING Lum more than Shinobu, thus turning Lum more bubbly and caring.
I haven't read her new one, because the MC looks exactly like IY and seems like he has the same personality too.
Again, Lum in the fist few issues/chapters of the manga was a 'villian'. You could even tell she was 'evil', by her visable fangs, darker make up and cunning and schemeing plans. She even black mailed Ataru's family several times in the early chapters and episodes.
The thing is, Naraku was a shitty villain. Asspulls every time to get away, and most of the time isn't relevant to the story other than having his insects fly by or a minion mention his name to make him seem relevant still.
Yeah I know. I'm just stating why I prefer Shinobu for being the nice girl, even though Lum became more popular and was changed into a 'nice girl' as well.
I liked when the two became good friends.
>She basically becomes Belldandy with fits of jealousy.
But that's fucking Wro.....oh damnit.
>But then Rumiko's plans for Lum changed when people started LIKING Lum more than Shinobu, thus turning Lum more bubbly and caring.
I get the feeling she was pretty butthurt about that, since she made the pairings for her manga really obvious after that happened.
Shampoo almost became a second Lum, actually. Fans liked her more than Akane, but they settled for Shampoo becoming a secondary character unlike Kodachi.
>Shampoo almost became a second Lum, actually. Fans liked her more than Akane
Well obviously. Akane a shit.
Akane became pretty nice when she warmed up over the course of so many chapters. Shampoo and Ukyo were better, but she fitted well with Ranma.
>but she fitted well with Ranma.
I don't think so. Sure she mellowed the fuck out after a while but she and Ranma should have been nothing more then friends.
The only reason Akane was so helpful to Ranma was because every time she did something for him, all the other love interests were conveniently not there or taken off stage.
Also she's the only girl who never pressured him about their engagement because she was too busy denying she liked him.
I honestly don't think any of the girls are right for him.
We all know Ranma wanted the pig D.
>I honestly don't think any of the girls are right for him.
Akane, through being tsundere, forced Ranma to actually bother doing something since he was a huge tsundere himself, The rest of the girls were too pushy but through Akane being tsun, Ranma also became less tsun towards her.
>Post a guy in drag
>Proclaim best girl
This is getting old, /a/.
>Ataru wants to dick every female in sight
>Lum wants to be dicked by darling
>never gives her the dick
GOD DAMN IT ATARU
She had the second biggest breast in the UY universe.
>the cat ghost that died in the cold
>only wanted to sleep one night under a kotsutatsu
>died in the cold
>remained a ghost
>became friends with Ataru
>was voiced by Goku's voice actor.
But Ataru did try once to bang her
I honestly don't think Ranma is naturally tsundere. He's just like that around Akane because he plays off her most of the time. Akane is the actual tsundere character in the show and in the relationship. And quite honestly she's still a bitch quite often. Not as often as the first half but still a bitch none the less. Like I said before, none of the girls are right for him but Akane especially given their history.
Ataru was kind of a faggot. He tried to fuck every girl in the universe except for the best one who wanted to fuck him.
The only reason he changed his mind about fucking every girl was because he saw the future where he got his harem but Lum didn't want to be his harem leader.
Akane could have worked a lot better if Takahashi actually developed her characters properly. There's nothing more annoying than a tsundere who's stuck in tsun mode. She never really leaves it either, even by the end of the manga. The best you can really say is that she became slightly less of a bitch.
Ataru also showed he really loved Lum. He just thought she was surpressing his youth. He accidently married her as soon as he entered highschool.
Takahashi has made it clear Akane is a self insert.
>Takahashi has made it clear Akane is a self insert.
Which was barely tolerable since the rest of the series was good. When she added her self insert to Inuyasha, it became downright fucking unbearable.
I love UY so much that I bought a lot of the DVDs. After Eigo went under by half a decade margin, so they were balls expensive. Some of them I don't own yet are over $100 and some straight up aren't available on the internet anywhere.
But it will be worth it. Someday my dream will be realized. A harem of UY DVDs. All of them Lum.
So I'm biased when I say it should be watched/read. But it's a great.
>Lum comes from the planet Uru
>The Japanese word for alien is Seijin.
All the episodes of Urusei Yatsura can be found, in very good quality, in torrents. Even the specials, OVAs and Movies. Hell, all of them are on Youtube in HD, hard subbed.
Well yeah, that's how I came to love the show. I watched all the episodes, OVAs and movies.
But I love it so much that I want them for real.
It's a weird, weird, spacey kind of love.
dat icy waifu princess
I remember downloaded them all from Veoh, all 195 episodes, 11 OVAs, 6 movies, directed from Veoh.
A good old time, i guess
Narrative speaking, she could have ended the story right here. Ranma and Akane were actually talking together, teasing each other, had real chemistry, and above all they seemed to have gotten over all their shit. Akane doesn't even flinch when he calls her uncute here.
But Vol 2 and it's back to the old grind.
But then there'd be no best character/
Can I just say that pairing him up with Akari was such an asspull. Konatsu for Ukyo too.
Takahashi basically just created them so Ryoga and Ukyo wouldn't end up perma-virgins.
I have a love/hate relationship with Ryouga. He tried to two-time Akane and Akari at the same time and in the same place no less.
Also, he's completely destroying Akane's trust every time he turns into a pig and stays in her room.
When is the next BD box coming out? I wanna do some bath episode screencaps.
I used to love Akari but now I can't stand her. I'm not a fan of Ryoga x Ukyo but that certainly would have been better then Akari.
Konatsu wasn't so bad since he never became a canon love interest and his arc was actually kind of interesting unlike Akari's "I've loved you forever even though you just defeated my giant pig."
Urusei Yatsura (Good)
Maison Ikkoku (Very good)
Ranma 1/2 (Very good)
Rinne (Haven't checked dunno)
The good far outweighs the bad in my opinion. I forgive her for Inuyasha.
Takahashi's ultimately pretty solid. I mean yeah, Inuyasha was kind of a miss, and there are some things in Ranma that I didn't like, but she's done more good than bad.
It's just that Inuyasha, in the west at least, was way more popular than anything else she did. I mean it still fucking airs on television, so she's pretty much gonna have that stigma around her for the rest of her career.
Who maison Ikkoku here?
Inuyasha is a shame because it has some well done characters and relationships, it's just that the main plot wasn't good and was too repetitive.
And the main relationship was basically Ranma and Akane if it was done even shittier and stretched out for 20 more volumes.
At least the Kikyo angle was interesting.
It's the detective conan of manga.
I would make it a modern sitcom set in America with the central joke centered around the Latin American community. Ataru would be Arturo a smooth-talking, adorkable lecher who suspects his girlfriend, Cheyenne is cheating on him so he and his friend Lorenzo take her cellphone and on a ride to the country he cracks her password to find out what she's been up to.
What she has actually been up to is a secret government training and enhancement program meant to defeat an arranged game of tag with Lucy-Fa, a sexy imp alien girl and daughter of the king of the space-demon race.
When the cellphone is activated the space demons take it as accepting the challenge, Lucy-Fa is sent to earth and agrees to the game of tag with Arturo. The government and Cheyenne discover too late, and from there you just do your standard Urusei Yatsura plot.
I call it "Alien Obnoxions"
You know, Godai had some awesome neighbors.
Hell, Yotsuya even punched a hole in the wall just so they could hang out.
You'd think he'd be grateful, but nooo.
Wow. Rumiko's art hasn't changed a bit since Urusei Yatsura has it?
Nope, still works for her.
Maison Ikkoku, like pretty much any other Rumiko manga, was ruined by being about 50% longer than they should have been
Personally I'm fine with that.
I don't like to use the word "comfy", because it's basically become a shitty meme, but yeah, I can't really fault her for not changing it too much. It works.
It was fun for the first 25 episodes. But after watching up to episode 45 and then the first movie I just had to stop because I wasn't enjoying it anymore.
I'll pick up the comic one day.
It's honestly my all time favorite anime.
And the art is really great, too.
She's a fucking girl you dipshit
Not in that episode she wasn't.
That guy who took over for Oshii after he got chased out for making Beautiful Dreamer had a rocky start but he ended up doing a lot of great episodes for the series.
that fucking kiss
anyone ever watched the Italian dub, i find it better than the North American one
