>>

lol I just finished watching it too. Yeah I agree, ending sucks.
>>
I know, worst cliffhanger of all time. The series WAS awesome though, wasn't it? Akagi is a bona-fide badass.

Now you can reflect in its glory, and move on to Kaiji afterward.
>>
I like the suspense but im always like:

"Ron!? Tsumo!? Tenpai? Man Gan!? Arrgh, slow the fuck down I'm so confused!! What the hell is happening!?"

Then they flash the hand for a half a second and expect me to understand what is going on.

Save the series and rewatch it later after you understand mahjong a little better, and it'll all make sense. Read the translator's notes and such.
>>
>>10222507

yeah pretty much. After watching Akagi I still don't ever know what the fuck is going on in Mahjong but it is still badass.

Fukumoto said that Washizu dies during the match in an interview.

if you learn to play mahjong, you come to realize how fucking impossible and badass the shit Akagi pulled in the anime was. makes what he does a lot more awesome

Can someone just explain how Dora tiles work and how/when they are chosen? All I've manged to pick up is that the Dora tile is a kind of bonus that increases points.
>>
>>10222610

Yeah I figured as much
>>
>>10222617
from what i gather, if you get a kan or four of the same tiles you get to set a new dora.
but thats about it.
>>
>>10222617
A new dora tile is opened up whenever someone makes a kan. If you have a tile thats 1 greater than that tile, you get an extra han
>>
>>10222617
Pretty much. I think they double points or something. They're usually determined at the beginning of each round. THey're located on the "dead wall," which is the section you can't draw tiles from.

I think.
>>
>>10222617

From what I gathered, The Dora marker tile you pull from the Wall means that the Tile of the same suit but One Number above it is the Dora tile.

They seem to act like multipliers making hands increase in value or actually become valuable enough to feasibly play.

Oh look, it's that one anon who uses the tripcode that corresponds to the 4chan Tenhou lobby. Why is he's posting in an Akagi topic I wonder I wonder...

best site to learn mahjong

Get FourWinds and play the "Japanese Modern" rules for a while, it's easy to learn, but hard to master.

Also, the ending could be figured out by some of the not-mahjong scenes, like did you wonder why he stopped to get that bag of energy drinks?
>>
I guess to address OP, it's not that much of a cocktease when you think about how the last two matches dragged. Awesome as they were, the next matches would have been more of the same, so it was a nice place to end and Old Akagi was awesome if one knows about Ten.

>>if you learn to play mahjong, you come to realize how fucking impossible and badass the shit Akagi pulled in the anime was. makes what he does a lot more awesome

Not really. The hands in Akagi were remarkably realistic; that's one of the great parts of the series. Akagi's hands are normal hands any player could have drawn (usually) but his incredible skills transforms them into something amazing.

Compared with Tetsuya, which shows unreplicable cheating (like this one guy who can instant memorize the patterns of all bamboo tiles he sees - Fake Akagi wasn't even nearly that good) and the fact that Tetsuya pulls off no less than five Yakuman in all of his matches really makes Akagi's games feel less contrived.

i waited in vain for them to explain the energy drinks.
in fact, throughout the whole thing i kept saying to myself "haha, by now they are pretty sure i forgot about the drinks, but jokes on them!"
>>
>>Why did they end it there? what was the point?
Because Akagi is a prequel to Ten. Which does not have an anime... yet...

> Tetsuya, which shows unreplicable cheating

Concur, Tetsuya was more like Kaiji in that it was about really trying to figure out the "hidden" rules to the game. Some of the sight-of-hand cheats are not so unlikely as you would think.

Check out the live-action 'Kung Fu Mahjong', it has the same people from 'Kung Fu Hustle', now that's some unreplicable cheating.
