Besides the assassin lady from Black Lagoon, are there any other explicitly Taiwanese anime characters? You think with all the women they raped then buried alive and all the babies they played volleyball with on the ends of bayonets, the Japanese have got to have some attachment to the island.

weeabooest in the sense that their hatred of the Japanese is only topped by their hatred and envy of Mainland and Hong Kong Chinee.
Taiwan was part of Japan from the late 19th century until the end of WWII, so there is still a strong Japanese speaking community there, although now mostly among the elderly.
Most non Japanese Asians have a strong love-hate relationship with Japan. They are both envious of their early economic success and cherish any perceived cultural slights or wartime grudges they might have against Japan.
Still when there is a Japanese cultural trend that achieves global influence, they are very quick to label it as 'Asian' culture as a convenience so that they may bask in its reflected glory.

I am Taiwanese, but I don't get the sense that people there hates Japan... at least the same way mainlanders do. While we were occupied during the world war II and sometimes before that which we were treated as second class citizens and surfs, we don't quite have the history with Japanese war time atrocities the way Mainland China have experienced.

>>
>>102108548
Where'd you get that idea? Asians are xenophobic and racist to some degree, as are all ethnic motherland countries. But they love Japanese products, food, and tv shows (anime included, of course). Most of the hardcore Jap-hating is from old conservative people that lived through the war, and basically their equivalent of the North American babyboomer generation and their indoctrinated offspring. As far as I know most of the younger generation consider Japanese culture pretty hip. J-pop and J-rock are popular there.

It's the old housewives and retirees that shout the loudest though, so their obviously the most vocal.

Then again, Taiwan has next no cultural identity. Everything is just a huge clusterfuck and people love to bitch and moan about just about anything.
>>
OP here.

I really thought that Taiwan was the country where you could find more Japanese culture (including Otaku culture, but not excluding everything else) in the mainstream media and is somewhat accepted by the general society.

Also, seems that newer generations, young people from the Republic of China and from Japan get along pretty well.

I've seen several people from east asia doing tourism, that when I asked they said they we're from Japan and Taiwan. So they traveled together, like a German can travel with an Austrian.
>>
>>102109306
The young'ns are pretty cool with Japan. Again, most of the hate-drama going on between Asian countries are from old geezers that can't accept any new worldviews.

"Otaku" culture is pretty mainstream there, though. Like, you wouldn't be socially outcasted if you told people you collect gunpla. Shit like idolizing sexy figures and being a NEET/ hikki are pushing it a bit, but then again that's weird everywhere (and not restricted exclusively to Japanese culture either). My sister-in-law is Taiwanese and she watches Fairy Tail casually at the dinner table while feeding the kid, and nobody ever says shit.
>>
>>102109306
Well, in my hometown at least, there isn't as much of Otaku shops as it did years before. I could only find 1 or 2 in specific areas where I was propositioned by an apparent mama-san. I was too dense to realize at the time when she was talking to me about "We have cute girls".

Nevertheless, its quite weaboo, I mean I got most of my Light Novel collection when I went back during '11 in mainstream franchised bookstores, Otaku shops mainly carry (drawn) pornography and doujin nowadays. In Taipai there are even more hardcored otakushops, but I didn't have the chance to actually explore them before I came back to the states.

DON'T FUCKING LISTEN. EVER. THOSE BITCHES ARE CRAZY AS FUCK.

That's how they get you man, that's how they fucking get you. Also, housewives have the weirdest idea of what's attractive. I always get complimented by old waitress ladies about thick, full eyebrows, how slim my lips are, how long my eyelashes are, how much hair I have...etc. Crazy stalker shit.

"You must get all the ladies with those eyes"

>"Y-Yea... I-I guess."
>>
>>102108891
No offense, but there's a good chance you're descended from KMT-era mainlanders, not guys who were on the island during the era of Japanese rule. I mean, I have no way of knowing, so yeah, you could be Taiwanese, but there are a LOT of KMT-era mainlander descendants who claim to be "Taiwanese" out of rejection of the PRC and CCP.

In general, the whole Taiwanese identity is fucked up. Japanese oppression in Taiwan was pretty much erased after the KMT fled there, because the KMT-regime quickly turned their attention onto anti-CCP propaganda. In a twist of irony, the descendants of the original Japanese-hating Chinese nationalists, who used to praise the glory of the Chinese civilization, are now rejecting "Chineseness" and getting friendly with Japanese.

The ROC-PRC divide thing is pretty much a more population lopsided version of the South-North divide in Korea.
>>
>>102110053
90% of Taiwanese world news is re-reported news from other countries. Most of the time Canada or America.

obviously you'll also find more Spanish culture aficionados there than in Belgium, but amount doesn't make the weeabooest country, it's the density.

I was asking if Taiwan, and not South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia or The USA, is the weeabooest country, as in, higher concentration of weeaboos.

You can actually enjoy Japanese products and still be a pretty hardcore Jap-hater. The concept of "soft power" tends to be overblown, because it's not that hard to mentally draw a line between "I like some of the stuff their company makes" and "I hate what they/their government/their ancestors do/did."

Nope, this was not because of tsunereness but because 1/4th the Taiwanese population at the end of the Chinese civil war was Chinese exiles. So the 1/4th of the country hated Japan, but the other 3/4th actually consider Chiang's army to be worse occupiers than the Japanese.

A century later, the Chinese exiles died and their children assimilated. So we are pro-Japan again.

Man, a lot of "toy commercial" or shounen battle anime is just casual entertainment there. Especially for adults that grew up during the 90s or were teenagers them.

Even the term "Otaku" in its literal iterations (like 宅男 , or 阿宅) have become part of Taiwanese social lexicon. Although fortunately, or unfortunately, with its original connotation intact. As least as far as the TV talk show or news talk show that baby boomers watches are concern, its a phenomenon about 90s and the millennial kids fail to live up to their expectations. >>102109902

Well, my family is generally KMT, but my paternal grandfather was in Taiwan and Japan during WWII. I suppose I am not *real Taiwanese* in the sense that I am not Indigenous tribes, but my paternal lines at least go back around 200 years there.

An interesting thing about KMT era verses earlier immigrants, their influx created certain tension social in baby boomer generations that can only be described as "regionalism" that is functionally racism, but the immediate distinction is typically speaking dialects. Its been a while since I discuss these things, but I really need to study up on it again.
>>
>>102110391
"Weeaboo" probably isn't the correct term here (aside from the fact that it can technically only refer to white people).

As far as translation goes of Japanese media the Chinese are by far the fastest. Chinese scans are almost always out first and Chinese translated VNs are several orders of magnitude greater in number than their english counterparts.

However, given how history education works in the mainland, basically every single person knows in detail the extent of Japan's warcrime record against them (which in western history books that don't focus on the eastern theatre of WWII is usually glossed over as "Japan committed numerous warcrime against it's asian neighbors") which isn't helped by the fact that they're still denying some of them to this day. Of course that isn't to say that every mainlander is frothing at the mouth in rage at the nips like some protests might have you believe. The PRC is still a big trading partner of Japan and I think anime/manga/VNs are very similar. That is to say, chinese people who consume contemporary japanese visual media are able to draw a much clearer line between liking something and liking the country it's from.

Is that to say that there aren't "weeaboos"? Of course not. I'm sure there are some over there who are equally as obnoxious and Japan-loving as their western counterparts but they would probably be much rarer than the kind of "I like anime/manga but not necessarily Japan itself" kind of fan that I mentioned.

The guy you are quoting dont know shit about Taiwan, probably a mainlander.

Taiwanese are humble people that took pride in our free economy when they separated from China.
We are a young country, but doesn't mean we don't appreciate what we have.
We look to Japan as a role model, as in a Nation that has no army yet can do rather well in world economy POV.
We are by far the least xenophobic of all asians, the simple fact that we look to USA to protect us from China... fact.

Taiwan has been ran by corrupted politicians for decades now, with the recent president trying to sell out Taiwan, Read up the recent visit by Hillary Clinton and how she ridiculed him in the open.

Anyways, Taiwan are kind people, we love to help, Japan are nice people thats why we help each other during crisis.

KMT prohibited the use of local Holo and Hakka dialects in schools and in public, effectively killing out the languages in most places. I think in some previous election they essentially said something like "Hakka, unlike Holo, are sophisticated enough to vote KMT," essentially insulting a good half of the country.

KMT also banned the appearance of Japanese texts that appear in Anime when it air in the country. Basically any anime on TV had to be edited to look like it has no Japanese origins. And any episode that can't be edited was cut entirely.

This practice stopped once the KMT lost their political dominance and realised that no one cared to hate Japan here.
