I'm adding some things to my backlog and I'm working on Astro Boy right now. Most of the guides reference the older series. On AB all I see is episodes on the 1980 series, but I see there are 4 TV series and a movie. Is there any sort of guide or recommendation as to which ones to watch, what differences they have and whatnot?

Also, if anyone just wants to post Astro Boy, go right ahead.
>>
You'd probably be moderately better asking on /m/. They managed to find terrible Hong Kong english subs for the 2003 version somewhat recently.

Me, I'd be content to just read the manga, but I don't really watch much anime. So yeah, I actually have no idea and would probably want to know just as much.

I'll read the manga too, I just want both.

I'll try on /m/ if this thread doesn't take off, but I don't really post on /m/ so I don't want to go in and post without knowing how things work there (something that's lost on all of /a/'s new traffic).

We could just make this an all purpose "old" anime thread as we don't have many discussions on non-seasonal shows but the ones we do are usually really good.

If it isn't LoGH, chances are you can't get a good thread about anything older than 1990 started on /a/.
>>
>>102108058
From what I know, they're not all that bad with newfags.

Anyways, /a/ doesn't talk a lot of Tezuka. Which is unfortunate. Almost as unfortunate as the lack of translations for very well known historical works like his.

>>102108501
Why is they remaking it? Why?
>>
>>102108599
*are they
>>
>>102108599
I've never seen a single Tezuka thread here to be honest. I guess I'll try /m/ tomorrow, I don't have time to babysit a thread now, I have Chinese cartoons to watch.

As for LoGH, I think they know it's a cult classic and that it could do well with a bigger budget. Unfortunately there are a million ways the remake could go wrong and only a few ways it could go right.
>>
>>102109177
I've seen a few.

>cult classic
Uh, I think this is the first time I've ever seen it described as such. It's pretty damn well known.
>>
>>102109411
Really? I've only ever seen it talked about by people on /a/ who aren't seasonalfags. Admittedly, I do avoid every other anime site that exists.

Speaking of old anime, I'm trying to download all 49 episodes of Rayearth. Anyone albe to seed this?

You might be better off with Bakabt's trackers.

I can't say you have to lurk for them more because the threads aren't too often, but don't confuse that for lack of interest or anything.

/a/ was getting a scanlation for the first volume of Phoenix (as it was ridiculously over priced, so Anon typed the whole offici volume), and another Anon converted MW just last week.
>>
>>102110573
And I wanted to say that if you want a better chance to talk Tezuka or other classics, you should watch for the manga threads.
>>
>>102110305
Thanks. I checked AB but I haven't used Bakabt in quite a long time. I'll use these.
Any idea about the Astro Boy stuff?

>>102110573
>I can't say you have to lurk for them more because the threads aren't too often, but don't confuse that for lack of interest or anything.
Oh I know. I understand there's less to talk about (and shitposting is popular) and that manga threads are almost always great, but I do join every old anime thread I see as the quality of posts is great. I just don't like how few there are. I wish they happened more often and I knew when.
>>
>>102110711
It is a problem, but maybe a reason why they are also good.
You could always start one when you've a few hours to just discuss.

Anyway, to answer you question about the differences between the series, here's a great site.

http://tezukainenglish.com/bm/series/series_a/series-astro_boy/series-astro_boy-anime/index.shtml

Twelfth paragraph specifically.

And the there's this, but some spoilers

>You could always start one when you've a few hours to just discuss.
The issue is that a lot of series end up getting discussed and if you've have seen all of them you're in for a lot of spoilers.

Still, the threads are worth it. I'll check out that link now, thanks.
>>
>>102112183
>>102111951
Ok I read the first link. The first series is almost 4 times as long as the 1980 version. Do people recommend watching both or will the 1980 version only be ok, and how much of the manga does it cover?
>>
>>102112183
This is true, but I've managed to get around it by not following the chain on replies that come in for one particular series that follow when an Anon first brings up the title.

Maybe just bring it up and remind people to spoiler big events out of courtesy?
>>
>>102112809
The problem is people tend to forget because when it's something 30 years old you've watched, you just assume it's common knowledge. I think the ending of Gunbuster is a good example. Most people have seen it, but for someone who hasn't and is reading about the show they have huge potential to be spoiled on it because everyone is so casual about how they reference it.
>>
>>102112456
I have watched only the 2003 version and there are quite some differences with the manga. Still it's really good and I recommend it. The animation is top-notch, the art is pretty and the sound is good too. It's just 52 episodes, covers about two arcs afaik, and I believe it's a must-watch series.
>>
>>102113378
Wait, you recommend the latest one over the 1980 series?

Is the 2003 another retelling or does it pick up where the 1980 series left off?

I hate when it's this hard to follow a series from start to finish. I might just be better off reading the manga then watching whatever I can get my hands on.
>>
>>102113505
It's loosely based on the manga. It starts with a brief introduction of Astro and then you get some non-canon stuff. There is the Pluto arc as far as I remember, but that's it. Watch the 2003 anime version only in addition to the old one and to the manga.
>>
As someone who watched Astro Boy 2003 up to the transition to the HK subs, I'd agree with >>102113725. There's a couple of anime-only episodes and stories and stuff that isn't adapted from other material, but the 2003 series is generally good. It's very high quality for a ~2004 release, and there's a handful of good episodes (including the Pluto series).
>>
>>102113725
So much stuff.

I can't wait to enjoy them all.
>>
>>102114773
>>102113725
Downloading the 2003 series now. I'll be reading the manga, watching the 1980 series, then watching the new one.

I'd watch the entire 1960's series but I can't find a good torrent anywhere.
>>
>>102115013
As far as I know, it's only online dubbed. It's on youtube I think.
>>
>>102115300
>it's only online dubbed
Well that's unfortunate. I'm not about to watch 193 episodes of a dub on youtube.
>>
>>102116557
Only 104 episodes were dubed.

Your best bet is to pick up the Japanese DVDs from Amazon Japan and have a PS with 2 DVD drives with the 2th one set to R2, it dose have The Midoro Swamp episode (Episode 34, which was done by Studio Zero rather then by Mushi, Tezuka hated the episode so much that the episode was meant to be destroyed, however, the episode was left alone as the episode was shipped off to the US be dubbed) but some of the later episodes are in animatic only as Tezuka Pro could not get/re-master the full episodes on DVD on time, episodes 93 to 144 were done by P Productions as Mushi went off to do Kimba The White Lion, Mushi came back to Astro Boy by Episode 145 and did the show until the show's end.

This kind of reminds me of Anons trying to get a sub together for Cyborg 009.

Holy crap that's an involved process you just took the time to explain. Thank you.

I'm planning on going to Japan and spending buttloads of money in Akiba this year. Maybe I'll buy those if I can find them there.

Your welcome.

Also, Amazon Japan dose ship stuff (as long if it's from Amazon it self) to foreign lands, it's also your best bet unless you hit up the Osamu Tezuka World Shop in Japan when your there, http://www.tezuka-shop.jp heres their web site but I don't know if they have DVDs at the shop so I still say Amazon.co.jp is still you best bet.

Best wishes to you.

Oh man... astro 2003 does not compare at all to 80's one. back then series had so much drama.

I remember 2 episodes the most, astro's first love and other one that at the end they left a middle age dude on a moon base with an obsessive robot, and you know for sure he will die, and astro cant do anything about it

Those were serious feels for a kid like me, I have emotional scars still.

On another subject. Does any of you know anything on how to get Jetter Mars (jetta marusu), if Astro was heavy on the feels, Jetter was hardcore mode.

I wanted that series for years and I only got some episodes from random places
