Just finished watching this. I cannot believe how the last episode was even the best episode. I kind of want to cry, this was just awesome.
There are 2 kinds of people here on /a/. There are people who think this is an incredible show that did just about everything perfectly, and there are people who go out of their way to say that this show is a cancerous mole on the face of anime.
I'm glad to see you joined the good side Op
To be honest the only complaints people have is mostly about the gay parts nothing else.
But yeah it was seriously one of the best shows I've seen, Squealer character was just great.
>and there are people who go out of their way to say that this show is a cancerous mole on the face of anime.
> this show is a cancerous mole
kiroumaru was my hero
I've seen a couple of people with legit reasons for disliking it, like its off pacing or issues with the death feedback, but they are definately the silent minority.
I do think that if more anime tried to go the way of shin sekai yori, the industry would be a much more respectable place
SQUEALER WAS WRONG
More like the cancerous hipster side.
Joint AOTY 2012.
Tied with GuP. I consider my tastes a bit broad.
A real queer rat and a real hero.
SQUEALER DID NOTHING WRONG
SQUEALER IS A SAVIOR OF HUMANITY
QUEERRATS ARE REAL HUMANS
KAMI-SAMAS ARE THE ENEMY
LONG LIVE SQUEALER
>tfw this is the actual message of the story and the series had a horribly tragic ending
Fuck you anon. Those fuckers lost their humanity long ago. Let go
Well to be honest you could really feel the lack of budget. It's one of the few bad points I can point out.
the scene when they repel the rocks that the rats throw at them near the start is so silly that I dropped the show
But I picked it up after and am glad about that, best show of 2013 btw
They didn't lose it. It was taken from them.
Who's this semon demon?
>SQUEALER DID NOTHING WRONG
Except for the whole failure part, bringing about the extermination of many colonies, pushing his entire race to near extinction.
Squealer is an anti-villain done right.
for an example of one done wrong, look to psycho-pass
Same shit. Go cry elsewhere
Shogo was a straight up villain
I forgot how bad some people are in the side that like the show...
I mean I love this show. I'd say its my 2nd favorite and it was a great story for me. but the people who just go around saying "Squeaper did nothing wrong!" degenerate the conversations about the show as much as people calling it shit sekai yaoi
Well, the other side stopped at ep 8 cause of gaysecks.
This. Winners write history. Too bad being a heartless rat is still wrong
OP, are you the guy that made a thread asking about the team competition/fight in episode 2 before? If so, good job.
Why is this show so lewd?
I thought the ending was bittersweet. I think I've said this before but I like to repeat is the fact that I enjoy the protagonist. It always surprises me that for a society with such rigid gender roles, Japan gets strong female characters right. They are strong in a feminine kind of way. The show has some legitimate drawbacks, but I think the whole is far greater than the sum of the parts. I guess many people are disappointed how well it turned out given this was a rookie team and imagine how much better it would have turned out in much more capable hands.
That was a weird season for humanity.
Psy cop ass was great too, it was just a different QUALITY of anime.
>Yuri not being a selling point
It's was called shit sekai yaoi
Only your first one is right.
The Queerats were entirely justified in their rebellion. But the humans were also entirely justified in crushing them. Squealer's only mistake was losing the war.
Seriously, every other show fell flat. I watched this after it ended. Marathon during the night for the extra creep factor.
He was very dark as an anti-villain, however. His conviction made him seem complex and very human. At the end, unless you were a fanatic of any side, it was impossible to rationally side with any faction.
I remember this show before it got gay.
They were simpler times.
Does anyone lost it when Yakomaru used Maria and Mamoru for his sake.
I'm not the person who takes a great deal in emotional investment of anime, but this particular stance was the last staw. Literally I couldn't see Squealer in any other way than a monster. I was quite happy when he was punished. Tough that doesn't make a great person, I enjoyed his suffering.
BD subs when, UTW?
Best character in the whole show right here
Satoru is such a wonderful husbando.
Exactly what I am saying. or atleast meant.
The Queerats had to rebel. And the humans treated the rebellion in a manner which is appropriate to quell any future attempts, as morally questionable as it may be.
The problem was that Squealer failed, and his failure was not a person failure - the fate of his entire race was riding on this. his failure killed not only himself and his followers but many "innocent" queerats and doomed any future attempt (which might have succeeded) to failure. Squealer took upon himself a great mission, a mission of unimaginable importance, one which will shape the future. and he failed.
His only mistake was the failure to win the war but its a mistake that is just too big to simply ignore or forgive. its a huge matter.
Filthy race traitor
There are some sound arguments against it, such as the QUALITY at parts and the pacing as well. SSY is my favourite anime but I can still understand these arguments against it. Anything else using against SSY why is just shit posting though.
What is worth more, two children or your entire race?
How is it different that how the "Humans" treated the Queerats? they bred and used Queerats as tools just like Squealer bred Maria and Mamoru to use their child as a tool.
Loyal until the end ;_;
So, how many people are left in the world?
just a guess with no true basis, but I'd say around 200k-500k
I'm not a bakenezumi. If I were, obiously I could see the reasons behind the act as perfectly reasonble, bein that they stealed the defeated's babies even before that. But still, does the end justifies the means?
I'm sorry I'm not defending my point rationally. I was personally ofended, as ridiculous as may be. It was just too much. Call me a fag if you want to.
A lot of small/medium sized communities like the one shown in the show, they're supposedly all over the world, there might be 1-3 millions spread throughout the globe.
I waited for a long time to see him in the bowl end ever since he started to use the kids as a mean to scare/subjugate the other rats.Still, I like him for his ingenuity and the fact he can talk his way out.
I thought it was amazing before the time skip, then it got dull for a while and then it turned into Naruto. Still a good watch overall.
I liked it but have to admit there's way too many issues with its plot. Mainly the sudden homosexual couples everywhere, i get it was to show the monkey theory on the human society but then, really? Everyone pairing up with the same gender was just silly.
>and then it turned into Naruto
I'm sorry what
Yeah, my thougths exactly. I actually liked him, and was willing to take his side even. It was just the whole "Lets use this gods left to die here and their children to conquer the world" that was too much.
I understand, I was offended too at first but after thinking about it I could see why he did what he did, and I came to the conclusion that the end did indeed justify the means, cruel as they might be.
Why is he so deluded?
I think in this case it was just a coincidence. The two boys and the two girls hooked up at the same time. Note that what's his name had a boyfriend for a long time after everyone else went back to hetero coupling.
They spend half the show looking for Sasuke.
Wellp... thats the first time I have seen an anime like this compared to Naruto. +1 For originality I guess.
>does the end justifies the means?
When it comes to a question of your entire races survival? I'd say the end usually justifies the means.
Would you kill a stranger - who's threatening your friends, family, loved ones and all the people you ever cared about - just so you could save those people important to you? I believe most people would answer yes. they might feel uncomfortable doing this but they know its the thing they must do.
So, if you agree to kill that stranger, who is from the same race as you, then killing a person of a different race will be even easier.
Squealer's choices might not be the most ethical ones. but there isn't always an ethical solution, the world is more complex than that.
just do it yourself anon, it's not hard.
I must say that the outsourcing of the animation proved to be extremely unsettling. The lack of budget really showed.
If they had more money, I'm sure a lot more people would have liked it.
It was all just a natural consecuence of how the Bureau were so eager to have the control over the rest of the people. If they weren't have tryed to kill the poorly talented, Mamoru will still live in the village, alive and well.
But there's nothing that could be done, because they would be risking of a Akuma rising. They were walking in egg shells way before then
I honestly don't think what Squealer did is even necessarily unethical. If the rules of the game are that you can genetically manipulate, enslave and genocide my race/species, you're basically, on a moral level, implicitly saying, "these are the rules by which I believe this game should be played, and am willfully participating in said game". Having the same thing done to you is completely justified.
That's not true at all. I really liked it but it has many flaws. It's still really good though.
It also genuinely got me angry and disturbed, so it succeeded in what it was trying to do.
Huh, look. This kind of replies was the thing I was trying to avoid with the last sentence. I know that he was right from his POV, is just that I'm not him dammit. From my point of view he is terrible. I said I wasn't defending my point from the rational side
they only spent like 3 episodes looking for the shota and the red haired girl (forgot their names already) and they were remembering the other dude that turned into a karma demon here and there.
Dude, I was totally thinking about this while I was at a concert the other day. This scene stuck in my head so hard. SO FUCKED UP.
Compared with the early cantus users, the new order isn't at all bad. But these scenes at the first three episodes were misleading as hell. I stoped watching this for them. Altough I'm glad I keep watching after a while
>The Queerats were entirely justified in their rebellion. But the humans were also entirely justified in crushing them
I applaud you. You are one of the few people who get this
This fucking character.
I liked the show a lot and it's in my top tier but I have many complaints about it especially the directing. There were so many scenes where the screen needlessly panned away too early during pivotal moments.
What did the ending mean? Why was she raising little child-killing cats?
Use your imagination.Their society doesnt change much currently but they will, hopefully and its going to take some time
>Use your imagination
I can't imagine any better system where you don't run a much higher a risk of annhilation, because there isn't one.
That last scene of everybody during their childhood saying goodbye and ultimately Shun saying they should get going was Saki dying right?
And despite all the flaws I think this is a good series. Just listening to the ost gives me a sad nostalgic feeling
I hated how the main girl was mad about the queerats 'killing' their tyrant queens when they were the same as those old ruler fucks.
And the new order is not much different. You see how absolutely retarded and incompetent they are and willing to kill based on nothing, the whole society's hanging by a thread. I like how they make it seem they're some all-powerful shadow group running this perfect society, and then you realize they're a bunch of trigger-happy buffoons barely able to keep things together at the slightest problems.
>That last scene of everybody during their childhood saying goodbye and ultimately Shun saying they should get going was Saki dying right?
I don't remember this at all.
Well, this is based from a novel. This would really have a higher chance to have a good story line, world building, character, etc.
The author took the idea from Stalin, right?
>. Cerimonial homages to Stalin were legendary. When aplause began, people were afraid to be the first to stop clapping. Eventially signal lights had tio be installed to indicate when the apalause should end. In print, radio, and the movies, Stalin was acalimed as agenius without equal in human history. Gvernment ffces, schools, factories, and homes all had virtually mandatory portraits of Stalin, His speeches were printed in million of copies in over 100 laguages.
Well now was it ever even confirmed that the psychic phenomenon ever spread outside of Japan? And even then who's to say that they all solved the problem like that did. What if Japan is the only country still limiting their population and living in a stagnant society.
This show is shit.
I haven't seen it.
Hopefully those arent use to kill kids, it cant be helped if there are though.
Obligatory fan translation site
I remember it was implied at one point that large parts of mainland Asia were depopulated by Cantus users at various times.
I feel like this show does 2 things very realistically despite its unrealistic premise
A thousand years in the future, the world, or at least japan would likely be like this
And if psychic powers similiar to a cantus appeared, the world would probably go into similiar directions. does anybody agree?
>I hated how the main girl was mad about the queerats 'killing' their tyrant queens
>implying the queens were tyrants
>implying they weren't just trying to stop squealer once they found out about his plan
If he didn't fucking order to attack Kami-sama's village then he would've been right.
He should've just extended his territory all over Japan.
This show was complete crap and it scares me that anyone likes it.
> muh emotions
Fuck I wanted to rape the mc.
It made me mad how indiscriminately they destroyed the false minoshiros, old records and libraries and books and shit. They didn't even read them first, they didn't even care.
Without killing the (non-queerat) humans, his species would never have been safe or free to live as they saw fit, because a single powerful human could reduce them back to a pathetic state nearly at will.
I have no words, this is, holy shit
Happens all the time in real life as well, mate. Such is reality.
Wasn't Squealer just biding his time and growing his forces up until the exterminators came to investigate? If they hadn't had come he probably would've done just that.
>being a homophobic asshat
Any reasons that you didn't like it or are you just going to be white noise?
The fake monoshiro implies that this was something on a big scale, though you can't trust fake monoshiro's 100%.
Look, we get it, you don't like homo in your animu. That's fine. Now why don't you leave us between ourselves, that is to say, well bred people who don't give it as much importance as you do ?
Why are you responding like idiots?
That look of utter defeat.
because I'm really bored right now
>Fuck I wanted to rape the mc.
>of the three scanned doujins, two are of queerats gangraping saki
And all was right in the world.
Well don't make shitty posts arguing with trolls when you're bored.
It was more like they would cause uprising if someone knew the bakenesumi were humans all along. Or any of the ugly truths in ep 4. In fact, they only keep their memories because Saki was intended to be a reemplacement for the chief.
Of course not. At this very moment, you can go to Home Depot and purchase a nail-gun and use it to kill all the people you want. It's not "psychic" in the sense we understand how nail-guns work, but it has the same effect of killing people. The only thing is, the rest of society will very rapidly capture / kill you in retaliation. If psychic powers suddenly came into existence, the majority of the people in the world would still use it only in mutually beneficial ways as befitting our evolutionary biology... and the minority of the people who would use it destructively would be rapidly subdued by the cooperative efforts of the good majority. Just like today, everyone can own a gun, but the people who would take their gun and shoot up children are almost instantly shot / jailed for their actions.
Furthermore, a near psychic-like power much more powerful than cantus already exists in today's world. It's called charisma. And if you've ever been around someone who possessed it, you could have felt its effects.... only difference is charisma is always earned through wisdom, boldness, and compassion and way outside the sphere of reach for emo teenagers with angst problems.
"His hopes and dreams are broken riiight here."
Old knowledge won't help anyone there except their leaders.
What I wonder is what happened elsewhere, are there any other societies out there or Kamisu 66th is all that is left.
Any uncontrolled cantus society without death feedback probably self destructed already, but maybe one or two human tribes survived.
>A thousand years in the future, the world, or at least japan would likely be like this
It's one possible future but only if superstition and paranoia are really that much a part of our psyche.
>And if psychic powers similiar to a cantus appeared, the world would probably go into similar directions
I think if some people had it while others didn't then that might be the case or humanity's drive towards order and mass paranoia could cause us to cull all cantus users early.
This kind of require photoshop skills I don't have
Well shit, Gatchaman Crowds is pretty much the total opposite of SSY
>only difference is charisma is always earned through wisdom, boldness, and compassion and way outside the sphere of reach for emo teenagers with angst problems.
Have an image of a charismatic leader.
I don't think you understand. This is a lot more like giving everyone a nuclear weapon than it is like giving everyone a handgun. Sure, most people would not go out on a killing spree, but all it takes is one person.
Remember the tribe of Queerat that attacked the local Queerat? It was probably what was left of another settlement that was destroyed.
Also I think something about other settlements existing was mentioned, but they couldn't communicate with them sine they were really far away.
>If psychic powers suddenly came into existence, the majority of the people in the world would still use it only in mutually beneficial ways as befitting our evolutionary biology... and the minority of the people who would use it destructively would be rapidly subdued by the cooperative efforts of the good majority.
You're assuming that everyone would have become psychic all at the same time. Remember that it was just one kid with mental problems who was probably bullied and decided to take it out on society. I mean fuck, the first thing he did when he discovered his powers was rape a bunch of women.
All it takes is one guy to fuck everything up in that scenario. If the wrong person becomes the "first" psychic, then the entire world is at his mercy.
>but they couldn't communicate with them sine they were really far away
Which of course might have been bullshit anyway and the leaders just didn't want tribes mingling and ruining the system.
This guy gets it. Just imagine how much a gun could do with one cantus user. It would be probably worst than just let them be.
This si the problem with SSY everything we know about the world could be a lie, the minoshiro are just as unreliable as the leaders.
How the fuck did adults function when their kids were killed all the time, Saki's parents seemed half crazy from it
When someone can't handle it, they probably forget.
Remember that only the mentally strongest survive in that village, that must be nothing ompared to what they've been through already.
>If the wrong person becomes the "first" psychic, then the entire world is at his mercy.
That's a lot of power for one person. I'd argue that even good upstanding people who tell themselves they'd never do what he did would be tempted.
The average citizen probably had their memories erased. The people in charge though were all crazy though, with the exception of whatshername that Saki replaced. One thing goes off-script and they break down.
>Cantus continues to warp the world until it is dead or unrecognizable
>Industrial pollution kills the earth
Fuck THERE ARE NO GOOD ENDINGS.
If only Mami were here.
To be fair it was very inconsistent
What carried this series was atmosphere, the dark tone and the music, without that it would be pretty shit
Perpetual brainwashing through hypnosis.
They were all lamb, the leaders were the only who had a free will.
Remember the common adults couldn't even think of damaging a human.
This was the point were they fail.
If there were only one person that doesn't have death feedback (like the bureau chief), they could be resting peacefully. That person doesn't have to know, it could be like a legend or myth.
>The average citizen probably had their memories erased.
Nah, I think they only did that to under 17 year olds, because they didn't have any human rights yet
Although I wouldn't doubt that they still did it sometimes
Shinsekai Yori and Sora no Woto are like brothers. They almost have nothing in common, but I feel like they fit so much together.
This was a very smart move. Moving the age of human rigths. Not ethical, but effective
There is the world setting they both have. Looks like it would be a nice future, but its a façade, and the world is really ending sometime soon
Yes it is! It's the ETHICS Committee, it's automatically ethical!
I loaded up the last episode again because of this thread and it really is superb.
A REAL HUMAN BEAN
Damn you ministry of love!
BDs when, Daiz?
Got what he deserved. Deal with it
DAIZ WHERE ARE YOU
That brief second there.
If you didn't know the context and you saw this image you'd think he was merely mourning, whereas in reality he's processing the fact that his entire race is now doomed to be largely wiped out, and the remainder enslaved until the end of time.
People critique this too much, especially considering it's an anime and other, much shitter things get it easier
Just as good Gods intended.
He shouldn't have lost. Poor fucker
>You have my permission to stop clapping.
Stalin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Squealer
Such a nice leader. Wish there were more of those clapping stoping devices around here.
OP, do you think Squealer is a hero?
Yep. Kiroumarou as well.
The homoshit isn't the only problem with the anime though. It was just plain retarded in it's plot and the characters and almost nothing made sense.
Hence Shitsekai Yaoi
Welcome to /a/
what didn't make sense?
>Why are you responding like idiots?
Cry harder, faggot
>/a/ hates anime
I think the joke went over your head anon and you actually think /a/ hates its medium like /v/.
Lurk a bit
>/a/ hates anime
Where do you get that from? Reading comprehension?
So you aren't actually intelligent enough to articulate what you didn't like.
typical of ssy shitposters.
The "Welcome to /a/" part.
In any case please elaborate, we are discussing not shit flinging.
>Lurk a bit
Next time give us an argument faglord.
No, explain to us who thinks it made sense how almost nothing made sense
well, i think you found one of the few ways to make squealer more detestable.
Do not bully Squealer-chan!
Queer rats are people too!
Eh, I tried.
Not bad, nice try anon.
They aren't humans, though.
You know what else is people too?
Soylent green, but at least is not using someone's babies to seed destruction aren't they?
and ones that don't try to commit genocide deserve all the rights humans have.
Bretty good anon.
Kill yourself. But before that, read the quoted posts
Typical Shitsekai Yaoi fanbase poster who can't read
>What didn't made sense
The story with the sex and other places and so on. As if it's necessary to talk about that shit anime again after all that time. Like I said, learn to lurk
Oh, you are plain shitposting.
Thought you had died of AIDS already.
There's no reason to respond. Just report and move on.
That's what didn't make sense to you? Even though they explained it more than once?
I bet 100 bucks that squealer is the grand grand grand son of one of these heroes right here.
There are only few people in the world who have the courage to act.
But they are!
That was awesome. Even without cantus they were able to take out the emperor.
Really the only problem I had was the extreme difference in animation after the first 3 or 4 episodes, everything looked so pretty before.
Their ancestors were human.
Queer rats are just queer rats.
That was more or less luck, even.
Two assassins sacrificed themselves to shield the third one who did the killing blow, only to have all his bones and internal organs squashed by the cantus power.
It was already said later in the story that the only thing the cantus users fear, is being surprised and sneak attacked. And this was exactly what Squaler did.
>Thought you had died of AIDS already.
Hey, I'm not the one who defend that homoshit
>Even though they explained it more than once?
Doesn't mean it was good in any way. It's similar to Psycho-piss. There are people who will say it was great written, although the writing is plain shit
Episode 10 and 21 were the best looking episodes.
Oh yeah, the QUALITY was also disgusting for quite some time
>There are people who will say it was great written, although the writing is plain shit
It's called subjectivity.
Stop responding to him
great show. best of last year imo. lots of moral dilema anit-hero shit going on which makes the already interesting anime even better.
budget was ass and some of the characters/scenes seemed unecessary but what are you going to do
Yeah, no point in complaining on the budget, being new and all. But worth the watch
>no point in complaining on the budget, being new and all.
Considering it had the backing of a critically acclaimed best selling sci-fi book behind it you'd have thought there would have been a touch more investment in technical aspects of the show.
The pacing was ass from the start though - a legitimate complaint.
Shows which try and merge sci-fi with fantasy are always going to generate a kind of hostile and divisive attitude from viewers simply for being being sci-fi-fantasy. I know ideas like 'psychic power' is integral to a show like this (much like powers in X-men for instance) but when they try and bring in some pseudo scientific explanation to root it in the real world is where it irks me (like zombies are caused by virus! fogetting the many physiological factors limiting the existence of zombies in the first place e.g. ATP generation, decomposition and so on)
I think had I watched this show many years ago (and probably before coming to /a/), say early 2000s, I might have actually liked it more but unfortunately coming to it now I thought it was rather mediocre and the fanbase on /a/ didn't do much to impress me either as far as discussion goes seeing as the shitty squealer memes that it generated - can't stand that stupid rat/mole face.
That "shitty meme" only started at the end.
>It's called subjectivity.
That's what all people say, who don't know shit about anything. They're also usually crying or get mad about every criticism - just like the guy in my next quote
Fuck off, degenerate
>no point in complaining on the budget, being new and all
What does that even mean?
The studio was new so you couldn't expect a decent budget.
The budget comes from the staff?
Squealer was an ass who would've subjugated his own race as soon as he finished off ours.
Glad he's dead, but I don't think anybody deserves the punishment he got.
Kiroumaru was a true leader and a true bro.
But we are the mole race, you fucking idiot.
One reason the plot was so good is that it was adapted from an actual sci-fi novel and not just some run-of-the-mill LN.
Even if Squealer were a flesh and blood HUMAN being, my opinion of him would not change.
I judge his character, not his people.
Squealer did nothing wrong.
But if I had been in the "magic human" side I would have made sure to thoroughly destroy any colony in mainland Japan.
BUT HE DID
If he did nothing wrong, he wouldn't have ended up as he did.
All there is to it.
All he wanted was to free his people.
Jesus did nothing wrong, but look at how he ended up.
Worshipped by a huge chunk of humanity and beloved and respected by even more?
Being the most famous single person in all of human history?
But he got stake'd.
Will the same happen to Squealer?
I liked how Squealer kept geting better clothes each time he advanced his plans. Like he was becoming more "human" in visual terms.
So it seems a rat is the only remaining think to talk about for that homoshit?
Good to know
The most complex character in the show, why wouldn't he be the main focus of discussion.
You can bitch about how you disliked the characters. This anime has a lot of objectively good qualities.
