Why do the Japanese keep rating her so highly?

Her character design is very bland brown/brown/brown/brown.

She's also a fairly generic tsundere and her relationship with he love interest is completely one sided.

Why? What is her appeal?

Just like how IB is suppressing the invisible entity, Touma is inserted into the narrative in order to suppress Misaka's growth and prevent her from reaching her true potential.

ALWAYS wrong about everything. I am honestly not sure if there's a single thing she's said has been accurate in the total narrative( eg Academy city is not evil. You have nothing to fear from possibly thousands of edgy accelerator teenagers walking the earth with no way to stop them,"I got to where I am through hard work and so can you! Mikoto is love. She's just so great. She has so much power that she has to believe she deserves it or else she can't justify the way things are. Yet this power routinely fails to get her what she wants when the chips are down. She can't save her Sisters, can't beat Accelerator, can't even protect all her friends. I think it's sadder that her powers have done nothing to make her happy and only ruin her chances at happiness. She trusted the scientists to use her DNA map to help people, and look what happened. She got the Sisters out of it, but so much suffering and pain is on her conscience now. And with Touma her pride and power get in the way and make her lash out. Her powers get her so much else in life but they can't get Touma for her.

It's also sad that Touma will probably never realize what he means to Birirbiri. From his perspective he just helped out somebody in trouble and saved the SIsters, but he doesn't know that int he process is turned Biribiri's world upside down and gave her a reason to hope for something better.

The plan. No one in their right mind would believe that a regular powerless level 0 could beat Accelerator (it hinges on showing that the "strongest level 5" is actually weak). Ergo, since the plan is completely retarded, why didn't Misaka point it out and why would Touma think of something that stupid in the first place? Why do they act completely natural and pretend that the plan makes sense?

I believe that this is a plot hole and the author didn't realize it while writing it.

>>
>>102087719
The whole plan was based on the assumption that Accelerator was the strongest esper in Academy City.
If another esper defeated him, then the most intelligent thing would be investing in him and helping him reach Level 6.
The problem is that Touma is a lvl 0 that doesn´t emits an AIM field so using him is impossible. Even so, Alesiter made sure that the project wouldn´t continue since he wanted the Sisters to be spread around the world.
Lvl 6 Shift was impossible since the begginign and Touma gave Aleister a reason to stop it.
>>

No, it had a mixture of canon and filler arcs.
>>
>>102087719
>No one in their right mind would believe that a regular powerless level 0 could beat Accelerato
Thats exactly the fucking point.

The calculation based for the lvl 6 shift experiment were made on the assumption that Accel was the strongest.
But when he actually loses against a much weaker one then that calculation has a huge fucking error and they would be unable to proceed with the experiment.

Also the machine they used to make these calculations on the first place was destroyed so they were unable to start this shit anew
>>

>>
>>102088254
The researchers base everything on what the Tree Diagram told them.

Hell, the Level 6 Shift can't even actually work. You can't level up by murdering a bunch of people. Crowley just made the Tree Diagram tell the scientists it works that way, and they accepted it because who's going to argue with the machine that's so powerful that it can perfectly predict every weather pattern on the planet for the next month with a few moments of calculation?

>Thats exactly the fucking point.
When you think about it the plan makes absolutely no sense. The plan hinges on showing to the researchers that accelerator is weak when they know full well how his power operates. They'll know that it's impossible for a regular 0 to beat Accel, they would conclude that either accel intentionally let the level 0 beat him or the level 0 that beat him has powers that allows him to bypass Accel's auto-reflect. In the end, it does not show that Accel is actually weak and the experiments would still continue.
>>
>>102088862
Accel would never let some lvl 0 beat him and even if that lvl 0 had powers that bypass Accel´s reflect, that would cause enough changes into Tree Diagram experiments that it would fuck up the whole thing.
It doesn´t matters which conclusion the researches reach, without Tree Diagram they couldn´t fix the error in their calculations...and even if they could Alesiter made sure that the experiment came to an ending before they could do anything.
>>
>>102088862
Not really.

If they believe Accel let him win, that means Accel doesn't really want to do the project, which isn't good at all.

And they can't find Touma's power. This is less because it's impossible and more because Crowley won't let them (all the important people in the city know about it anyways), but all Touma knows is that no matter how hard they tested him in the past, they never found it. He has no reason to suspect it'll be different this time.

Also you're pointedly ignoring other posts.

>Accelerator
>letting himself lose

That would defeat the whole purpose of why he is doing the experiment in the first place.

In the end, the researchers can only get to two different conclusions: a) Accelerator lost to a fucking level 0 and all of their previous assumptions mean shit now, or b) there's an ability that can defeat the Accelerator and all their previous assumptions mean shit now.

They also have no way of studying Imagine Breaker outside of the most obvious stuff, and without their supercomputer they can't run simulations.

Mikoto's appeal comes almost entirely from the subtle nuances of her design. Everything about her is seemingly average or generic, but it comes together to form this inexplicable perfection. Not to mention the other quirks in her design, like the hidden ahoge and shorts under her skirt.

Yeah, she has a few anons who posted her in the V anon/waifu thread.

She was very popular here during the times of S1 and Railgun S1, so that shouldn't come as a surprise. The excite around her down as time passed, but even still during Index S2 she was still quite popular. Railgun S2 re-sparked her popularity, but it wasn't at the level it was during Index S1 and Railgun S1.

Her body needs to be reminded of what its true purpose is: bearing children. Wearing a suit is a veneer to mask the signs that her body is meant to get bred and give birth, which is why it feels so fulfilling to rip it off of her while burying your dick inside her womb. It's a reminder of what she really is, bringing her down to earth through the power of the D.

So, I'm curious. What would the "family" dynamic be like between Mikoto, her imoutos, LO, Worst, and Mikoto's mom. How would their father even react and think of all these clones? This is assuming they all got together and took a family vacation. Of course, only some of the imouto clones can go on the trip, not all of them.

Touma rejects the ideal of the hero he had before his memory loss, has started to realize he needs to rely on others, and is willing to be selfish now and place his own needs above that of everyone else's.

Hamazura has realized that not all high levels are bastards, that he actually has worth and the ability to protect people, and that his lack of leveling was never his fault.

And you know, I can keep going. Mugino is undergoing development, Kakine went through a hell of a development, even Umidori is slowly changing given NT 7.

Ugh this again, lemme get the list.

1. After Touma, she's the character who's gotten the most screentime over all the series combined. And that with the ridiculous amount of material available.
2. Well-executed tsundere
3. Undeserved suffering. Till now we have seen 5 different renderings of the sisters arc.
4. Not a flat character, established background, history, large amount of involvement in the story. At school she acts like a lady, but when away from the other girls, she can be herself.
5. One of the few characters who's actually shown motivation to help Touma personally instead of just being on the same side of conflicts, while not being as insane as the rest of the cast.
6. Powerful. She can rival an army alone, hack any kind of electronics, rip down buildings, spiderman-sling between buildings. This power is deeply ingrained in her personality. She isn't afraid of anyone, at least, until the sisters arc.
7. Human. Established flaws which logically follow from her background and experiences. She may have all that power, but that doesn't mean she's some kind of moral angel. Dislikes using lethal force but willing to use it if necessary. She isn't some goody two shoes, she doesn't think that she has to use her power for some purpose, she'll use it as how she sees fit, and she has quite the delinquent side. She loves a good fight, and will not back down on finding someone who she thinks to be of the same powerlevel as herself.

Railgun Manga and Index LN. Order isn't all that important.

The anime adaption in general is shit and makes little sense. Railgun Filler in particular is painful.

Quality kind of goes New Testament>Railgun Manga>Old Testament>Railgun canon anime>Index Anime>Index Manga>Railgun filler

Accel manga only has two chapters out so far.
>>
>>102108179
LN. The anime adaptations are shit except for part of railgun season 2 (S) and the director absolutely hates the fact that he was forced to actually adapt the source material instead of awful filler.
Index manga is only good for the artwork.
Railgun manga is pretty good.
>>
>>102108179
LN is superior, if you can't get into it watch the anime.

LN gets going properly around volume 14-15, still pretty good before then. Translations are shitty until js06 started doing them (volume 12 IIRC)

Railgun manga is a good introduction to the science side of things.

Index Manga is behind the anime, and skips some important arcs.

Railgun anime is alright, butchers some characterization though.

Index anime is pretty good, some arcs are done awfully.

Canon Railgun S > Railgun manga
>>
She's cool
>>
>>102108179
Source material is the Index LN's and the Railgun Manga / newly started Accelerator Manga.

There isn't really any spoiler free order, but Index does more worldbuilding while Railgun focusses on a smaller part of the world.

The index anime has problems with cutting content/shortening arcs, but it gets most points across. The railgun manga on the other end has a LOT of filler which is kind of annoying due to characters acting different than you'd expect them to behave.

If you purely want to watch things, go Index I > Railgun > Index II > Railgun S

If you want to read (the novels are far ahead of the anime), read the Index LN's first to at least the Daihaseisai arc, and from here you can read the Railgun manga without problems. The earlier novels suffer a bit from bad translation, but after 14 or so the quality is pretty consistently high due to our resident translator js06.

There's also a bunch of sidestories, which require various amounts of knowledge to make sense. I'd go through the main novel series (1 -- 22) first, then read the sidestories, and then go on with the New Testament novels (NT1 - NT9)

I still think that Othinus is from the Aeon of Isis, with her representing the One Goddess.
Hell, the Aeon of Isis is ALL ABOUT the "the Age of the Great Goddess".

Even then she managed to affect shit from the Aeon of Osiris.
With Gungnir it was as Will said:
She had total control over life, death and magic.
I don't think Aiwass, unless maybe he was "completely" summoned into Earth, could do shit about Othinus.

Anyway, I still think that Crowley ran to a pocket universe or something to escape Othinus. If he was still on the same universe, she'd be able to uncover all his plans after getting Gungnir.

Think he's asking why Touma's right hand doesn't de-Esper people.

The answer is that while Esper powers aren't scientific and break the laws of physics, the process to create them is pure science. The brain is damaged in such a way that the person sees the world through a perspective completely different from actual reality.

Touma's right hand can't do anything against mundane stuff, and he can't heal damage anyways. So he negates Esper powers because they're unnatural, but he doesn't negate the damage to the brain, so they stay Espers.

Process is different though. Espers stay Espers because they're already damaged and it comes from scientific means.

Magicians stay magicians because there's nothing separating them from normal humans. Touma can destroy their spiritual items, but they can just make more.

Touma can stop magicians from casting magic while he's touching them if Thor is any indication though, and it works the same for Espers presumably (especially since Biri didn't try to shock Touma anywhere else when she grabbed his right hand).

Honestly, it would be pretty funny if someone completely destroyed the status quo by confessing outright to Touma. An absolute confession that couldn't possibly be mistaken for anything else.

I'm sure it would give the other girls a huge scare.

...and then it turns out that the girl was actually a magician trying to get close to him and stab him in the back the moment he let his guard down, thus preserving the status quo.

...Still, even then, the damage would be done. Now the other heroines would have no choice but to realize just how precarious the current situation actually is.

Technically Lessar did. Though hers was less of a confession, and more her just trying to fuck him to get him to work for the UK.

Touma was in serious mode that whole arc though, so he just tried to get her to shut up.
>>
>>
>>102118814
It's not just that.

The way Lessar said it and the way she acted really just made Touma think she was making light of the situation and joking around. He never took her seriously once, and why would she?

Also, Kamijou-san's a pretty serious guy. He's not the kind who'd sleep with someone without going out with them for at least a few months.

>“Bfh!! What are you-!? Why are you doing that all of a sudden!?”

>“I’m seducing you, so react already!! If you push me down and get this over with, the UK will have one more vanguard member!!”

>“Hah hahhn!! I see. So you’re just one of those girls that says all sorts of things with a smile on her face while not knowing the meaning of any of the sexual terms she’s using!! As someone who has just a bit more experience with life, let me tell you that you’re saying some truly dangerous things!! You should be more careful!!”

>Even if another Level 5 defeated Accelerator, the researchers would not be convinced that he was actually weak.
>But what if Academy City’s strongest were defeated by one of Academy City’s weakest, a Level 0?
Let's think about this for a second.
For the scientists to accept "A" is impossible since level 0s are powerless and could never beat him (come on, if you were an AC scientist would you believe that Saten could beat Accel?), therefore they would not believe that a level 0 beat Accelerator.
"B" is also out of the picture, see the greentext. What Touma is trying to show the researchers is that Accelerator is actually really weak by showing them that a level 0 (remember the greentext! It's supposed to be a regular powerless level 0 in order to show that Accel is really weak and make them doubt Tree Diagram's calculation) could beat Accel (which doesn't make sense since the researchers know what Accelerator's power is). Phew, I hope you caught all that, I was being extra detailed so you don't miss any points.

It's just so mind boggingly stupid and if you apply a teeny bit of logic the whole plan comes apart.

>>102133355
The scientists were mind bogglingly stupid since they listened to what a computer and everyone else told them. They thought RL worked like an RPG and they didn't even have an inkling of something being wrong at the idea of being told human clones weren't human.
The real problem though is that when the experiment failed a lv 0 beating him was so ridiculous that they would have to manually check everything to see what went wrong for decades.
At least if Kakine won it would have been as simple of thinking he's stronger than they expected but a lv 0 with no data is like testing out a new type of steak only to find the cow jumped over the moon.
>>
>>102133355
It's very simple.
For the experiment to work, it is assumed that no Level 0 can beat accelerator.
This assumption is proven false (don't forget that they were monitoring the fight, and for the scientists, the data in the bank is absolute), which according to proper scientific procedures, means the hypothesis needs to be adapted to fit the new evidence.
However, due to tree diagram being broken, this is impossible.
Therefore, the experiment was cancelled.

Stop arguing building on the premise you're trying to prove, that doesn't show anything.
>>
>>102133764
When did they ever say this was the reason they stopped the experiment?
Does the scientists ever say they stopped the experiment because a lvl 0 beat accelerator?
>>
>>102133764
Just one question.
Why would the scientists ever believe that the person who defeated Accelerator is a level 0?
A level 0 is a person who is powerless and the scientists know that accelerator is powerful to the point that he is said to be able to survive a nuke.

Remember, the point of Touma's plan is to show that Accelerator is actually weak (which I need to stress again, doesn't make sense) by losing to a level 0.
>>
>>102134106
No, because that's not the reason. Why would Crowley kill his AIM dispersers? He needs them to manifest things like Kazakiri and Aiwass, letting them all die would've been counter productive.
>>
>>102134123
Because it says in the bank that he's a level 0? Which was determined by AIM field measurements which can't lie?
>>
>>102134196
That's what I'm implying.
>>
>>102134106
The scientists stopped because a level 0 beating accelerator was something which invalidated their hypotheses. It was something which was impossible according to their hypotheses, so why would they continue with an experiment which was based on hypotheses which were already proved wrong?
>>
>>102078080
She's the japanese equivalent of Magneto, of course she's rated so highly
>>
>>102134106
Manually checking the data would take several decades as mentioned back when Accel first became an MC.
If crowley had wanted the experiment to continue he could have pulled some strings and/or simply went on as normal while tying Touma up with fukou da.
If he wanted it stopped he just well use that as an excuse to stop it while the scientists are stuck researching.

>>102134271
To get more data on why they're wrong? being proven wrong is actually an awesome thing in science since you can figure out why as a new discovery.

>For the experiment to work, it is assumed that no Level 0 can beat accelerator.
>This assumption is proven false (don't forget that they were monitoring the fight, and for the scientists, the data in the bank is absolute)
First you need to understand the essence of Touma's plan.
Touma intends to show that Accelerator is actually really really weak.
This is accomplished by (what he thinks) showing the researchers that Accelerator cannot beat a level 0.
Remember, the thing that Touma says would make the scientists doubt themselves is Accel being really really weak (not directly because of losing to someone with a label of "level 0" but because he is actually weak, remember the label doesn't matter, it is the fact that accelerator is so weak that he couldn't beat a level 0).
If the scientists were monitoring, the whole thing becomes even more stupid.
>>
>>102134106
To be fair, all you need to do to prove a plot hole is that the plan is so stupid that it wouldn't hold a second under scrutiny.
The actual in-universe reason wouldn't matter since if we agree that the plan is completely retarded, the "hole" would exist in Touma's and Misaka's behaviour since they believe that the plan actually makes sense.
>>
>>102134519
The sisters have uses beyond level 6 shift. Even if they existed for the purpose of the shift, which they don't, finding out that killing all of the clones may not result in a shift (as Accel is weaker than assumed) means they can put the sisters to better use, e.g. Raijin Mikoto.

The problem being they can't check their data due to tree diagram getting index'd. A major deviation, such as Accel getting his ass kicked by a level 0, would put a lot of doubt into the minds of the scientists, and possibly make them move onto other experiments.

Touma probably did it so he could punch stuff.
>>
>>102134368
You seem to have some misunderstanding of how hypotheses are approached in science. Once one gets rejected with conclusive proof, you're of course not going to test that one again (except peer reviews etc), you're going to formulate a new hypothesis and test that one. You don't gather data on why you're wrong, you'd just be gathering data of which you have no idea if it's even useful. You formulate a new hypothesis and test that, and on and on. There's no use in repeating an experiment which is known to cause a different outcome than you expected, because that hypothesis is already rejected.

>>102134519
Touma's plan can be as illogical as possible. I'm just saying how the scientists would've perceived the outcome. I'm not saying Touma's way of thinking about is was right.
And of course the scientists were monitoring. They planned the locations, they have access to the observation satellites. What kind of idiotic scientist wouldn't monitor his experiment to see if it goes according to the set hypothesis
>>
>>102134106
Even if they could continue, too many people knew about it and Accel's resolve was already shattered. Why they stopped the experiment is irrelevant.
>>
>>102134076
>Stop arguing building on the premise you're trying to prove, that doesn't show anything.

I'm not saying that the scientists are drooling idiots for monitoring the experiment.
I'm saying that the scientists are drooling idiots if they believed that Accelerator is actually really weak (as per what touma intends from his fight).

>>
>>102135178
This is what happens when people read science fiction written by someone who isn't a scientist and take shit way too seriously. There are too many autists in the fanbase.
>>
>>102135178
But why would the scientists ever believe that Accelerator is weak if he lost to Touma?
All this would prove is that Touma is a special level 0 that can bypass Accelerator's AIM field.
No other level 0 could beat Accelerator because they are powerless, which is key for the plan since if Accel lost to a powerless person, he would have to be powerless too or have very little power (which the scientists would never believe since they know the full extent of his power). This text seals the deal.
>Even if another Level 5 defeated Accelerator, the researchers would not be convinced that he was actually weak.
Remember, the point of the experiment is to prove that Accel is weak, this cannot be proven because of reasons I stated above.
I believe my logic is sound but you are free to pick it apart and see if something is wrong.
>>
>>102136031
I think the point really isn't they thought he was weak. They thought he was unbeatable, and Touma proved he wasn't. Therefore, they had to change the plans, but Three Diagram had been Index'd earlier and they couldn't run their numbers.
>>
>>102135684
That's what I've been trying to prove, that shit doesn't make sense but people defend it and say that it makes sense (which I have to respect since they use reasoning to back up their arguments).
I also enjoy debating and seeing narratives fall apart.

>I think the point really isn't they thought he was weak. They thought he was unbeatable, and Touma proved he wasn't.
That contradicts with this.
>Even if another Level 5 defeated Accelerator, the researchers would not be convinced that he was actually weak.
From the text you can clearly understand that Touma's plan is to prove that Accelerator is weak. He states that even if another level 5 defeated Accelerator it wouldn't matter.
>>

>But what if Academy City’s strongest were defeated by one of Academy City’s weakest, a Level 0?
>Of course, it may have looked like Kamijou was a strong esper who had merely flown under the radar, but Academy City’s System Scan had thoroughly checked him over and he still could not get rid of being branded a Level 0. That was just what Kamijou Touma’s Imagine Breaker was.
>If Accelerator were easily defeated by someone who was seen as a Level 0 no matter how much one checked him over, what would those researchers think of their supposed strongest?
So Touma did think of the possibility of them just thinking he was strong but dismissed it

Eh, I like having silly arguments about shit like this. I can argue both sides anyway, tis more a way to spend the time for me, and it's a lot more fun than writing reports/documentation. Scientific writing style is such a motivation killer.

>>102136031
Basically, the premise of the experiment is that Accelerator is the strongest esper, and by a large amount. Him getting beaten by Touma, who according to all of AC's data, is nobody special without any power, or training, or skill, disproves this. When the basic assumption on which the whole experiment was designed and simulated (Everything only holds when accelerator is the strongest esper) is disproved in such a manner (there's a risk that another level 5 could take down accelerator, but this is probability is factors larger than some random level 0 taking him down. A result within one or two standard deviations can easily be called a fluke, one 10's of standard deviations away probably means your hypothesis is false) that this hypothesis is almost impossible to be true, it is logically sane to reject that the experiment based on this hypothesis would have a different (unusable) outcome and continuing the experiment would be foolish.
>>

>>
>>102136812
It updates monthly and there are so many novels to go through.

JC Staff crammed like 9 novels into one season, and the Index manga ignored Deep Blood and Angel Fall to try and keep up.
>>
>>102136434
>Yes but that's Touma's reasoning, he isn't a scientist so it's normal he'd assume wrong.
But the plan isn't just wrong it's completely absolutely insane (in the stupid way).
Why would Touma, Misaka or anyone else who heard of Touma's plan believe that the plan would work or even hold a second under scrutiny? It has to be a plot hole.

>So Touma did think of the possibility of them just thinking he was strong but dismissed it
They would have thought that Touma is a special case level 0 (different from all the skill outs that Accel beat) that can break through Accel's auto-reflect. Touma wouldn't actually prove that Accel is weak since the scientists are fully aware of the extent Accelerator's power and Touma beating Accel wouldn't change a single fact about that. See >>102136031 for a more detailed break down.
>>
>>102136888
So is there any point to reading it right now?

Also doesn't that new accelerator series take place well ahead of where the index manga is? So you'd need to pick up the novels just to know what's going on
>>
>>102137018
Accel manga takes place right after he got shot, so the Index manga is technically ahead of it in the timeline. Railgun is slightly ahead of the Index manga though (it's just starting to go through the Daihaseisai).

There's really no point in reading it though, unless you want to see the great Innocentius that the Index manga artist draws.
>>
>>102136743
And if you think about it, if another level 5 did beat him the experiment would've probably stopped too.
Hell, even if Accelerator won. The clones warned him that going through any unnecessary fight would deviate the plans and might need another run on the Tree Diagram
>But the plan isn't just wrong it's completely absolutely insane (in the stupid way).
e's assuming that, since the plan hinges on Accelerator being the strongest, if he's beaten, the plan will have to stop. It is pretty stupid, but it's straightforward and both Touma and Mikoto at that time had been pretty desperate for a solution. The fact that it worked as intended could've been considered a coincidence.
They're also fully aware that Touma doesn't have any power. They've checked him since he ever lived there. It's impossible for the low tier scientists to even imagine something like the IB, apparently only the Kiharas and Aleister know about it.

disregarding the things about the plan, that's not what a plothole is. People doing stupid things happens. A lot actually, and for some reason the world doesn't crash down. Even if the reason for doing an action was wrong, that action can still have the intended consequence. A plothole would be something happening for no reason at all. In this case, even with a faulty reason, the chain of actions is still intact. Touma's reason for defeating Accelerator might be different than the reasons for which the plan was actually cancelled, but it was still cancelled because he defeated Accelerator.

If that would be true then the whole esper system would be fucked in general and they'd have to redo everything from the ground up. In the science system, no such abilities exist. They have studied for decades on these assumptions, it is easier for them to assume that accelerator is a fluke rather than the whole material they studied for decades to be a fluke.

Can't avoid that. But if you finish it you'll probably be less afraid of the walls of text.

The individual volumes aren't long, but taken together it can be intimidating.

I think the estimate is that all the volumes (including side stories) add up to around 2 million words. For comparison, the Wheel of Time series is a little over 4 million I believe.
