/a/, I think I just realized why I hate Shinkanami Asuka (from the Rebuild movies), and , consequently, why I love Soryu Asuka (from NGE TV) so much.

You see, it's not that crappy Tsundere characterization formula that many anime have done before and still doing today.

What makes Soryu Asuka so special is how her loud, arrogant and annoying behavior is caused by a severe personality disorder in a futile attempt for her to suppress her childhood emotional traumas.

Even better than that is the fact that we can see how she is slowly, but systematically, becoming unable to repress those memories and emotions during the show, culminating in her tragic showdown against the 15th Angel, Arael, in which she is literally mindraped, and her hopes of surpassing her trauma are utterly crushed.

And then, at the End of Evangelion, we see how she manages to, somehow, make something out of the train-wreck her psych had become and finally accept who she really is - Just to see all her hopes being crushed again... this time by reality.

I guess what i'm trying to say /a/, is that the thing a love the most about Asuka is her suffering. It's beautiful! No... it's delicious! From all the mental breakdowns in the show, hers was my favorite. Still, don't mistake this for some kind of sadism. I suffered with her with every step she took toward insanity, but somehow it felt good and made me care about her more than any other character.

Please, tell me I'm not the only one that thinks this way.

And... well, I guess... NG Evangelion General?

Also, she gives a shit about doing her job properly more than Shinji does.

But he's the MC so he performs better than her, despite her more extensive training. And on top of that she finds him attractive?

She should be pissed off. Life is bullshit.

I guess all that suffering actually make her happiness that much enjoyable. The brief moments when she recovers and wrecks havoc with Unit 02 in EoE are beautiful. Too bad the original work never explored how she lived after HIP.
There's a ton of fan created content out there, but I still have to find one that doesn't end up somehow breaking character.

While it's admirable you recognize this it should also make you realize that you won't find what you're looking for because Asuka isn't a happy person and people want the characters they like to end up happy. This is especially true when someone is writing fanfiction.

I think we're supposed to assume that Shinji and Asuka turn out OK, but the ending isn't very reassuring. In my opinion, Rebuild would be much more intriguing if it were a straight-up sequel to NGE rather than a retelling. It's not like the characters didn't have any room for more character development. In fact, it's uncertain if Shinji really learned anything in the end.

Sidenote: With the Rebuild series and all the extended universe crap, "canon" doesn't mean as much in the evangelion world as it does in other mangas. In the end, I hope Anno has a good answer to "Why was the Rebuild series necessary? What does it offer that the original didn't?"

Pic related, it's EoE in hockey form.

I guess the Retake Doujins are the closest think to what one with that kind intent would actually be looking for. EoE isn't suppose to have a happy or even definitive ending.

Making a direct sequel is something Anno knows he couldn't pull off. It would mean having to fill in holes and tie up loose ends which is something he's not all that good at.

Nope. It's a separate studio formed by Anno completely under his own control. Gainax has nothing to do with it other than he used to work there. It's why Gainax is dying, Eva was their biggest IP by a mile. It's like if Shigeru Miyamoto started his own game company and took all his characters with him.

Mentally she's basically an adult but emotionally she's literally still a child. She doesn't spend time thinking about things that she doesn't like or agree with, she just decides they're stupid or that she hates them. They're two people from a site called fiverr. By the way, isn't Shikinami Asuka supposed to have a background at least similar to Soryu?

Then why would she keep that doll with her all the time? Wouldn't that just bring back those terrible memories?

Following on that, couldn't that mean that Shikinami actually managed to deal with her issues, being then just a more mature version of Soryo?

They were, but really they could have been compressed down to one movie. 1.0 should have been set up for the original cast. 2.0 introduces Mari and establishes new character backstory while the plot begins to deviate. Then 3.0 can actually have some coherency along with a meaningful cast of characters. Then you have your finale.

It's like Anno couldn't think even a step ahead of himself when he was writing the movies.

Shikinami feels like an afterthought in Rebuild. Well, a lot of characters do. But for a main character Asuka isn't very prominent in the story and with the characters I feel. First two mainly focused on Shinji and Rei, even the third one is Shinji/his Rei feels/Kaworu. Asuka is pushed aside.
I really would have liked to know about how she coped with her "angel status" and how people treat her, how she feels, her backstory etc. But she just got a handful of screentime.
I don't think even Final can fix Shikinami cause it'll just be focused on Shinji and the other two.
But because Shikinami is so poor, Soryu is easily more interesting and good to me as a character so I agree with OP. The writers just didn't try because they rather >>102065567

Anno's probably wanted to put the whole franchise to bed for years now. Man probably can't even go out onto his back porch and look up at the sky without being reminded of the series he made. He's a different man this many years on, and I'd think telling him to make more Eva projects is like telling him to relive those depressive years of his life over and over and over trying to dig every last bit of relevance and inspiration out of it.

I'd say he is. One thing that separated eva from every other "robot" anime is that the characters were messed up and deconstructions of their archetypes and it tried to flesh them out so we all understand them if we tried. Rebuild goes for a more shallow, modern anime approach where characters are put aside for action scenes and pandering. It's nothing like the investment Anno and others had in the characters before where he poured parts of himself into them.

>>102066749
Anno is likely leaving Eva to others after Rebuild actually. He said that in an interview years ago.
