Would a card game like MTG work as an anime without HEART OF THE CARDS bullshit? MTG Student Council did a passable job as a manga. Or would /a/ rather have cute planeswalkers doing cute things?
We follow a scrub as he learns the secrets of Magic. He goes full Spike and battles his way to a Pro Tour victory. Best friend are a Johnny and second best friend is an EDH fan.
Its been done multiple times before. The most obvious example is Yu-Gi-Oh. As for just having people playing cards, I find it boring. Though ifthey found a way to do it like Hajime no Ippo or Angelic Layer, I'd watch it.
LSV cameo as a pun-slinging mentor/final boss when?
>without HEART OF THE CARDS bullshit
We get to see his thought process as he picks draft cards.
Nail bitting topdecks on PTQs.
Cheaters and rule lawyers on his way to stardom.
Maybe a Pro Player or 2 gives him advice?

They could probably just make an anime set in the actual universe rather than using the TCG.
The whole point of anime like Yugioh and Cardfight vanguard is to promote their games since children are part of the target audience. MtG is popular enough without an anime series in Japan so they might as well just use it to expand the multiverse (if they could even get the rights from WotC).
That being said a show about the TCG would be fine also, though without the "Heart of the cards" shenanigans I can't imagine it being any more exciting than just watching a GP.

Rather than a card game series I would prefer to see a MAGIC lore series.
Season 1: Jace's travels through the multiverse
Season 2: The war between phyrexia and Mirrodin
Season 3: The war against the Eldrazi
Season 4: Adventure in Innistrad
>without HEART OF THE CARDS bullshit
You do realize that's a metaphor for stacking your deck, right?
Brothers' War and Invasion had better stories than the steaming turds Wizards comes up with nowadays.
Posting, if anyone hasn't seen it.
I think MTG is catering to younger audiences by dumbing down mechanics and cards. An anime for kids would boost their sales but then they come up with Jace 73635.0 and forget about it.
>Against the Eldrazi
I'd watch a 'Sorin the troll' anime
This sounds like Cardfight Vanguard, only the scrub went back to being a little bitch after going full Spike.
Jesus christ that title
>tfw urza could just wreck their shit with a wave of his hand.
>Sponsored by StarCityGames
Definitely want to see the Brothers War and the Weatherlight Saga.
Actually, let me just say I want to see everything Urza.
Too bad Urza is FUCKING WASTED. The Multiverse is doomed, Bolas can be all high and mighty in his seat of shit, but when Emrakul decides to suck up the entire Multiverse with his buds the shit is on, unless they somehow re-seal the Eldrazis.
Now trust me, I have all the respect in the world for Urza. But I doubt he would just deal with the eldrazi like they were nothing. He BARELY defeated Phyrexia, and only succeeded because of the eugenics program making Gerrard and the Weatherlight. So maybe if he had centuries to plan it out he could do it.
It'd be challenging to script a battle so that it's both enjoyable from a tactical point of view and also showcasing the nicer "Timmy-tier" cards at the same time. Maybe a Limited arc could show some Constructed-unplayable yet cool spells and creatures.
The EDH fan plays 5-color Hermit Druid when things get real.
>implying EDH ever gets real
As long as they're forced to use their corporeal bodies he's got a chance but the moment they go mass of spheres and colors out of space we're all fucked.
When you have tournaments with money on the line it does.
You mean when the table is composed of other assholes like Arcuum Dagsson and Zur? Or a "I sweared I would never use this deck, but he deserves a beating!" moment?
Don't get me wrong, I don't know shit about Urza, I just trust more experienced players and friends of MTG on the lore things, to me, the Eldrazi are the biggest baddest bestest things. All hail the true face of the divine!
>With money on the line
He might not have been able too, sure Urza was probably the strongest walker ever but I have my doubts he was as strong as 3 other apparently powerful walkers combined. Remember Sorin sealed them before the Time rifts occured.
>mfw i loved the books when i was younger
are the recent books worth it?
>implying Urza hasn't been planning everything including the the Eldrazi's release
>implying the next block isn't going to be Urza's Return.
Some places have edh tournaments not wizard sponsored, but some places do. I've even heard that some of the bigger tournament organizers might replace some of the limited side events with edh.
LSV is a miracle of the universe. A true blessing.
It's the "I thought I put this behind me but you leave me no choice"-deck.
I read the first few pages, and I'd be glad to have an anime like this.
Why do people always want to turn things into other things? People are always saying "which video game would make a good anime" or "which book you've read would make a good anime" and stuff like that, but I think the qualities that make for a good example of something rarely translate well into some other thing. Magic: the Gathering is a pretty good card game, but that's it. The story is stupid and the characters are 1-dimensional at best. Anyone ever try reading the Halo books? Fucking terrible. It's great game, but Spartans don't make for a great set of characters in a novel.
Do we get a "If you beat me I'll go on a date with you" type girl/student council president too?
Confirmed for not having read the books.
Almost as bad as the Halo books. Magic: the Gathering wasn't designed to be a story; it was designed to be a card game.
No, it wouldn't. Just do it like Chuu2 did. Transcribe what happens so that it is easily understandable with a voice-over.
>tfw you keep sacrificing over and over your Veteran Explorers in Nic Fit
The recent "books" are only comic books. Not really worth it compared to, say, the Artifacts cycles.
I hope they use the French EDH ruleset and banlist.
Well, just the adventures of Patrick Chapin could make a good show.
How does that work?
First or second sentence? Or both?
The deck. I thought you could only get to sac explorer once.
Well, you have 4 in your deck, and sometimes it's worth using an Eternal Witness and a Cabal Therapy to get a shuffle effect.
Yeah, it would. Travis Woo too, to a lesser extent.
So this is basically just legacy ramp?
Had no idea a third chapter was out. Very excited about a translation as well.
>just legacy ramp?
Yeah, but since it's Legacy, it has a lot of tools. Cabal Therapy, Liliana, Eternal Witness, Innocent Blood or Punishing Fire, Primeval Titan, things like that. It wasn't very well positioned when I played it, but it was before that fucking merfolk was printed. Sacrifice effects are pretty solid right now.
>that fucking merfolk
I blame EDH.
Meh, it fits in Legacy, but it's been a while since a single card has warped the meta that much.
>SOL anime with LSV, Twoo and Patrick Chapin
It almost writes itself.
Shit i left my tripcode on, My mistake, won't happen again.
Cast of the show is ten people, each plays a guild. They magically get transported to Ravnica and join respective guilds, their decks' spells becoming actual spells and the creatures coming to life (as in they leave the card, and all become real all at once, physically, not just summoning)
>Edgy fuck plays Orzhov vampires with edgy cards (Path to Exile, Tithe Drinker, Vampire Lacorator, etc)
>Best girl plays Izzet storm
>Chill dude plays Golgari dredge, sort of goes crazy dealing with golgari shenanagins
>Yandere plays Rakdos discard
>Straight and narrow glasses guy plays the infuriating Azorius control deck
>Moralfag white knight plays Boros wienies
>American teenage shitstain girl plays Selesnya lifegain, like Boros, but more moralfaggy and self righteous
>Mafia muscle who plays in his spare time plays Dimir unblockable
>Body builder plays Gruul stompy, uses his code of honor and strength to gain a following in the Gruul hordes.
>Simic gets the magic noob (grill) who net decked a janky combo thingy, only really nondescript character.
Orzhov gets swarmed by hungry vampires when he lands, he's a vamp and struggles for contol over them. He learns a bit of blood magic and a bit of light magic. Once an established order gets made, he is contacted by Orzhov to become security.
Izzet messes with magic and how the combos work and quickly gets funded for reserch by Izzet.
Boros quickly gets his betalion getitgetit? of humans together
>MC LSV plays decks formed by his childhood friends, genki girl TWoo and Kuudere PChapin. SOL shenanigans ensue and they do anything but play MTG.
I pictured this scene with a bunch of golgari mages.
>Zis remindz me of ze time in ze Auschwitz ya" in engrish
he forms a new branch of the Boros legion, and they start becoming a respected group.
Rakdos yandere starts cool, if scared, and messes with her magic long enough to learn that she just plain enjoys driving people insane and killing them with invisable demons.
Selesnya attempts activism, but fails, causing a war between the guilds (alternate universe, Jace isn't a a character and never happened, cause Jace is an edgy faggot) Her and her centaur healers and clerics are usless
Azorius joins Azorius cause he's not a physical law dude. Half of him is just filing paperwork, other half is casting spells to remove things that cause harm. He also has a Phyrexian Wurmcoil Engine or two to back him up.
Golgari sort of innitially goes nuts, after all of his dredge type spells kind of drain the life force of his other monsters. But they all come back to life, and he becomes an accomplished necromancer on the outside rings of the Golgari
Dimir does Dimir things, kills dudes, steals shit, all the stuff he would do at home, but with magic.
Gruul goes and beats the shit out of a big ass ogre, taking his status, and starts earning a name for himself.
Simic is the slice of life 'whooooaaaa' type character who's shell shocked by what happened. Only person who goes about life normally, though she gets a side job for Simic.
Details the lives of them all for a bit, then moves on to the war that the Selesnya player started. Orzhov, Boros, Gruul, and Izzet get the spotlight mostly.
Nigz dunno that the best animu with MTG would be a high-school-based Ravnica setting with a promising mage trying to create a name for himself within the walls of this school. It wouldn't be easy though, under the watchful eye of:
Azoria, the stalwart and lawful Student Council President,
Bora, the head of the Public Morals Committee,
Rakdee, the biggest troublemaker that is not Izzee, the genius/walking warhead,
Orzha, the head of the school chapel, ya know "Entrance is free, donations are required"
Dymira, the shadowy, almost mute lass that lives in the underground and has tabs on everyone, and wears oversized clothes to look "inconspicuous"
Golgari, also an underground dweller, preoccupied with the cultivation of her fungi creatures
Selesnya, the schools head botanist, whose gardens are a wonder to behold. The "ara, ara~~" type of woman.
Simica, the co-founder of the science club (together with Izzee). The Patchouli Knowledge of the school.
We wana get some writefags in here to start writing this shit? Got a could that sound like they might be good. I could start if nobody wants to.
Would you a Simic?
so MC is as dense as the Gruul? Makes sense.
Drafting episode, after getting a strong pack one he's heavily cut on his primary color because the people next to him opened bombs.
He gradually falls into despair as pack by pack nothing but unplayables go by, desperately clinging to the hope that he may be able to pull it off zawa zawa
>Picking good rare p1 with two very good cards inthe same color
>Get cut like a bitch for p2
The worst feel.
Of course, since MC off-drafted or counter-drafted some other color shit, he gets to open a bicolor bomb in p3 that fits right into his new deck
Aaaaagh! I knew I forgot about someone!!
Grulla, the school's biggest bully.
The MC is actually a guy who has the wits and the devices to reach his goals. This could potentially be a harem comedy, but could also be something more sinister if you, for example, make Dymira an agent that is working to undo the school.
What is really intersting here are relationship patterns.
That's actually what I despise the most in anime. The MC is a freaking expendable piece and not a character on who should be the focus.
Couldn't Gruul be some cute animal themed girl like kirara?
It could work perfectly fine without Heart of the Cards. Although it would be full of insufferable cunts like Jayce.
Actually, she is, just more ferocious, following her animalistic instincts.
"Oh I brought my mtg cards just in case"
Azusa, do you just take them everywhere in case one of your friends wants to play with you, when they don't even know the rules?
That's really damn impractical you know that?
MTG has no theme, how do you expect it to be an anime?
People playing the card game could work but would also be boring.
Making characters in-setting wouldn't work because there is no cohesive direction.
Series takes place in Ravnica shortly before the new guildpact shenanigans.
MC is a Boros recruit and first season is him trying to find out what happened when his best friend went missing.
He joined the Dimir
Also includes loli Izzet love interest and Gruul protaganist.
Season two is Jace Guildpact arc.
>Would a card game like MTG work as an anime without HEART OF THE CARDS bullshit?
HEART OF THE CARDS > you, faggot
Thanks for your unsolicited input.
It would only be interesting if the MC is a Johnny. He'd carefully create theme decks and surprise opponents by actually getting them to work.
in the psp games they call it destiny draw
you draw preselected a card
Who Timmy here?
I'm more of an Uber Johnny.
My favourite deck is mono white stax
>Johnny love interest, MC modifies and pilots her ideas so they become meta-breaking
>you will never see an animated Vintage match
Enchant nonblack nonartifact creature,
You control enchanted creature
>literally over in 1 turn
Why would you even want to animate that?
>Narrated by the Kaiji narrator
>In fact, just make it exactly like Kaiji/Akagi, but with MTG
Depending on what kind of vintage match I'm perfectly ok with this.
Were it a game with merfolk against delver or something (I don't keep up with vintage but I've seen those decks once or twice, if they're for scrubs apologies) so actual cards are being played, then sure.
If it's storm and LOL LOTUS MANAMANAMANAMANAMANAMANAMANADRAWDRAWDRAWDRAWDRAWDRAWDRAWYAWGWILLMANA*DRAW^2TENDRILSFUCKYOU then I really don't care.
That's Legacy you want, Black Lotus and OP cards are banned there.
>Common, off colour mind control with slight downside
First pick in draft everytime.
I fucking love this doujin
>K-ON girls playing legacy
>Mugi is playing esper
A clueless country bumpkin Gruul girl would be a perfect MC.
>defends nature from horrible city folk
>participates in terrorism with naive excitement
>has a crush on a Selesnya boy so she beats him up, drags him to camp and declares that he's now her mate
>implying Shuhei Nakamura isn't moe as fuck
Ochoa would make a badass MC.
I would watch this
>Robots vs FoW decks
Ritsu was horribly outmatched.
Especially when Mugi is fucking mainboarding Engineered Explosivs, what the fuck Mugi
>>has a crush on a Selesnya boy so she beats him up, drags him to camp and declares that he's now her mate
Only to be crushed by wurms.
I'd watch an anime based on Chandra my firefu
>she's a fire mage!
Watch the cute foreign exchange student Travis Woo do cute things?
There's already a mango.
Forgot image, whoops.
A harem flocking to his shirtless body...
So as someone who knows jackshit about MtG lore, where do I start
the mtgsalvation wiki is a good place.
With one of the episodes beginning with this music as the camera circles rapidly around the draft players. The narrator makes a quick summary, then we see the hero sweating and looking down on the table as he just realized in the last episode that the 7 other players are somehow cheating together to put him down (as he won against each of them in previous tournaments, they all bare a grudge against him).
The tournament is probably rigged too, the packs were obviously opened and manipulated before hand since all the packs he gets have cards of a single color, but he has no proof so he can't protest. Also they are all attached to electric chairs and the losers will receive a discharge strong enough to feel an unsufferable pain before fainting.
It's the last pack, he just opened it with the very first creature he saw since the draft began, a 5-colored unplayable rare beast who would probably get removed anyway if he ever played it. He then takes resolve and go for it, he makes his last picks and plays a 5-color nonsensical deck with only this 1 creature. He then manages to reach finals but loses against his last opponent by a hair because he didn't have the guts to try some daring combo move.
Brilliant, fund it.
Why do people keep focusing on the guilds whenever MTG and anime are brought up? The Multiverse is vast, we could have a story on Dominaria as well.
>Teferi and Jhoira's adventures across planes
This is what Japan thinks of Bitterblossom.
Reminder that Bitterblossom is shit.
Odyssey would be a good story to adapt as well, I liked Chainer, Kamahl and Jeska. Kamahl can be hot-blooded shounen MC.
Because those settings are usually pretty generic or uninteresting. People would prefer to focus on stuff that's a bit different.
This would be pretty sweet though.
Kibler is the MC.
I wonder what happened to the writefag who said he'd do up some stories.
MTG thread on /a/... That's a surprise.
I used to like MTG but I don't really have the motivation (or the money) to become and remain competitive. It's not the most expensive hobby but the fact is that a player who spends more will win more. That kind of shit is frowned upon greatly in video games but it's just the nature of TCGs, unfortunately.
I probably won't get back into MTG even for casual play. I don't like the way matches are expected to be over in for our five turns nowadays. Either you plan for one of a few viable strategies or you go home.
Our maybe it was always this way and I didn't know because I played with other beginners as a beginner. But it was more fun when games would actually go on long enough for fun cards to be playable.
Kibler is Kamina.
Lel. The only player that wears a tailored suit in tournaments, although he got his cool to back it up. The guy every neckbeards aspires to be.
LSV looked like a standard neckbeard back then, but he's shaping up ever since he got his commentary job.
The episode where Kibler will have to sacrifice himself for MC ;_;
>In order to make the rules as simple as possible to understand, some of the terminology has been modified and/or omitted
Because Ravnica is now the de facto "home plane" of magic.
I want Urza's reincarnation as a smug loli
>Kaiji wins with Chromanticore beatdown
Im okay with this
I would see him more losing because of something like letting someone look at his deck before it started, and they removed a land or something so he had an illegal deck size
