Jaume Collet-Serra (director of House of Wax, a bad Paris Hilton film and some other shit) has confirmed that he is working on a life action adaptation.
"It's great that they're waiting for me. It's different, because you have to be respectful of the source material. Otomo adapted his own work from a manga into an anime and both things are completely different and genius. The only way to do a live version of "Akira" is to take the spirit and adapt it. It will be as different as the anime was from the manga."
What the fuck is even the point? Akira was essentially the best animators in the business showing what they can do. Why would a live action film even need to be made? And technically, the live action film Chronicle already had the plot of Akira.
More from the director.
>I think you cannot make a movie about "Akira" and hope that everyone understands it. Like everything else, you have to make three or four movies in one where there's the essence somewhere. If you're a fan, you already know what it's about and you'll see it's part of the same world, but trying to oversimplify it would be a mistake. I think if at some point a character tries to explain it to the audience at the end of the second act, that's a problem. It's more like an existential opera. It's something that can only be explained in the manga, and even in the anime it's hard to follow.
In b4 "my favorite actor lieks anime" statements start pouring in. No one cares.
I expect and upturn of Hollywood types pretending to be into manga and anime very soon.
You were warned, /a/.
Because hollywood likes to get their grubby mits on other peoples clout and make it 'better' And guess what? Its going to be shit. And guess what? Its going to be number one in the box office. Because guess why? Because its all about money, and guess what? All the moronic normalfags will shell it out for this and love it.
hopefully the project will be killed by every studio
>It's more like an existential opera.
But operas used to have bits where the audience was told what was going on in case they didn't understand the singing.
>If you're a fan, fuck you, you know whats up, go watch the anime. This is for all the retards.
> It will be as different as the anime was from the manga."
You mean adapt the first 3 volumes almost panel-for-panel then skip to the ending of six?
> I think if at some point a character tries to explain it to the audience at the end of the second act, that's a problem
that's exactly what fucking happens. Kai and Kaneda are in the prison and Kai while being possessed by Kiyoko gives that metaphor of an amoeba given the powers of a human and just going around eating shit because that's all it's brain is capable of understanding. The Colonel has a ton of monologues talking about the rut Neo-Tokyo's entered, and how blind progress and hubris with technological advancement can lead to where they are today. And Akira begins the film by destroying fucking everything. Tetsuo's a metaphor for a human given atomic power and Neo-Tokyo is a direct parallel to postwar Japan. It's not that fucking difficult.
Prepare for loud film trailers and viral marketers typing "EPIC" and "HYPE".
Why didn't Japan do it themselves if they care so much? Its their fault for selling the rights to jews in Hollywood
Just make battle angel dammit
>Directed by Michael Bay
that's what gets me. normalfags who amke fun of people for watching anime or even reading comics, but then they'll watch stuff that's based on it with no fucking problem. such ignorance.
Capeshit comics are near enough mainstream now since Hollywood got all bit on them.
Why would you want that? You have Battle Angel Alita already. Why do you need a live action version? Live action film brings nothing new to the table.
Why. Fucking why does Hollywood have to milk everything?
Akira is a series inspired by Katsuhiro Otomo's experience of world war 2 in his childhood and the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. How would that meaning stay intact if you change the location and it's people?
You know, I'm not trying to demean Akira or anything, but one of the greatest things about the movie was the animation and visuals.
So what, the live action will strip this merit away and have a bunch of shitty CGs instead? Count me out, sometimes things are better off staying in anime format.
Well, too bad for Akira. The movie is great and manga even better. I'm seriously glad Hollywood did not manage to rape Kiseijuu in the end, even though they tried.
They'll just use 9/11 instead.
The only good thing about Akira were the visuals for its time. The story was pretty bad, the characters were unlikeable and if it wasn't for watching it with a friend and laughing at how bad it was I probably wouldn't have finished it.
Actually being a live action explosion and special effects movie suits it pretty well.
