Is there any sort of info sheet for ripping anime BDs? There have been no uploads for Gatchaman Crowds or Kill la Kill volumes yet and I want to do it myself.
What's the best way /a/?
Look for the [DAIZ] button on your keyboard.
But Daiz is a fucking TERRIBLE encoder
If you have the actual BDs you could do the world a service by uploading the BDMVs. That way you don't have to learn encoding yourself.
Buy your own BDs, Daiz.
Maybe if I had waaaaaay too much expendable income, but since I have practically none, how about no.
Daiz, won't you encode the Dokidoki Precure BDs for me?
jesus it does work
Daiz, where is my nise?
I don't work on it, so I don't really know what's going on with it.
But aren't you encoding them?
No, __ar is.
Daiz do you have a general encoding how-to posted somewhere?
I'd like to start dicking around with it but don't know where to start.
Ah well, it would be cool if UTW at least explains why they are delayed, that "eventually" reeks of Kizumonogatari.
Not really. You just kinda have to jump in.
I do have this list of stuff though.
- Dealing with BDMVs / DVDISOs / Transport Streams
--> Demuxing streams and loading them up in Avisynth
--> Cutting and merging audio
--> Dealing with DTS-MA
--> IVTC (for Transport Streams, DVDs and rare BDMVs)
--> Special IVTC case: Scrolling 60i text
--> Debanding (pretty much the most common source issue)
--> Dealing with a whole bunch of other issues like noise, ringing, aliasing, blocking, etc.
- Encoding video with x264
--> Start from presets and tunes
--> Get a feeling for how psy-rdo, psy-trellis and aq-strength affect the video
--> Understand CRF and that sources are not created equal
--> You'll likely need to pipe avs input with something like avs2yuv or so unless you still use a 32-bit OS for some reason
- Various other encoders
--> Mostly audio ones like qaac / neroaacenc / flac
--> Possibly ffmpeg/libav, if you need to encode lossless video for example (using utvideo)
--> Or VirtualDub, alternatively (for using the "main" utvideo version)
- Mkvtoolnix and muxing
--> Chapter making / generation
--> You really should know how subbing works on a technical level too if you intend to work with fansubs.
When will we have the vol 2 of kyousogiga out and ready to download?
Things you should also have:
- A good, preferably high-end desktop computer with at least a quad-core processor
- Plenty of RAM
- A fast (preferably at least 10/10 Mbps, ideally even more) and unlimited / not very bandwidth-limited internet connection. BDMVs, DVDISOs and Transport Streams aren't exactly very lightweight, and you should be able to upload your encodes at decent speed too.
Why are you asking me? I have nothing to do with Kyousougiga.
>Why are you asking me?
Maybe you would know.
In other words, Anon, take Reinforce raws and mux some subs.
Daiz, h265 when
Woah. That's a lot more work than I thought. I'll just stick to ripping the BDMVs in that case.
Late 2014 at earliest.
Will it bring about another wave of incompatibilities or are the modern players ready for it?
Well I wanted to encode GuP's BDs using Commie's subs, but as Daiz said, good internet is a must to get initial seeds out, or even get them downloaded in a decent timeframe. My usual internet would make anons want to kill me more than the encode quality would.
As long as your playback setup is up to date at that point you should be fine. libavcodec already has a HEVC decoder that can even do 10-bit and it's available in CCCP stable today.
Daiz may I ask you why you say Haali Media Splitter is useless?
Rip the BDs with something like DVDFab HD Decrypter, make a torrent of the resulting folder, upload torrent, seed.
LAV Splitter basically does everything Haali does and more today, so there's no reason to use Haali anymore.
I've ripped and encoded a couple volumes of animation before. I used StaxRip to help me with the settings and it was all pretty straight forward.
The interlacing was fucked on one of them, though. Terrible frame bleed and random combing. Like as if the publishers deinterlaced their source video incorrectly with the timing slightly off, then re-interlaced the sporadically combed video.
I'm not home right now but I'll try LAV splitter when I get back, if shit doesn't work fine I'll yell at you more.
If you use simple ripper programs like StaxRip, then you're just generally speaking not going to able to fix broken shit. The only way to do deal with it properly is to go the long way and use Avisynth + friends.
Dude, just use CCCP, eventually with madvr and xySubfilter on top.
You could just rent a cheap seedbox for a month or so.
CCCP doesn't seem to work fine in my toaster for some reason, I had no choice but to use KCP.
God, is EveTaku or someone else doing them?
DmonHiro really fucked up his encode.
That's weird, because KCP uses madVR which should be tougher for your toaster. Otherwise they're the same things, so there wouldn't be a difference.
Kill yourself daiz you finnish shit
Know of any good ones for the purpose?
If I can afford it then I may be able to do the BDs yet.
>God, is EveTaku or someone else doing them?
I'm just taking the Reinforce raws and putting Evetaku subs in them with mkvmerge.
I think that would require more effort than the people who compiled the DVD put into it. Besides the frame bleed and sporadic combing, it also had a shit load of compression artifacts. Pic related. This is the quality straight from the DVD.
Also, it was Family Guy, so fuck it. I was only using it because it was one of the two box sets I've been gifted. I had much more luck with the Lodoss War box.
These guys seem pretty good (haven't tried them out myself though):
With the cheapest option that has 400GB storage, you could keep around ~25 BD volumes on it at the same time (your average volume with 2-3 eps is usually around 14-16 GB in size).
>I think that would require more effort than the people who compiled the DVD put into it.
That's pretty much the point. Because they didn't care, we gotta do the caring for them.
MeGUI a shit. It's honestly more confusing than just using CLI tools if you want to do anything advanced.
Yeah, that works, I guess. But it'd be nice if EveTaku released a batch or something, I can imagine a show like this will need lots of subtitle-fixes as more of the story/context were shown. But if Reinforce at least got the frame rate right, it's at least an upgrade.
Heh, you never change eh Daiz.
Is it common for companies to fuck up their BD/DVDs releases?
Yes, it really is.
For anime, yes. Though it's much better now than it used to be.
About $25 a month eh?
Might look into that after taxes are dealt with. Thanks for the link.
Didn't Farfie use Commie?
Only the non-fun one.
The Symphogear G BDMVs are 20 to 28GB.
Isn't that normal for a BDMV?
I did say "your average volume". Of course there will be exceptions.
A single-layer BD has 25GB of space, but that doesn't mean anime BDs would fill up the whole space. As I said, your average volume with 2-3 episodes is around 14-16 GB, but it can also be higher depending on the amount of extras.
Please encode these.
No. I have more than enough backlog BD projects as is, and I don't watch Precure anyway.
That's a pretty massive project to take on, though. VFR and all.
Oh well, worth a try.
Yeah, that's why I'm not doing it. I've got zero experience, and with the interlacing problems I've seen in past Precure releases, it doesn't seem easy.
What is that?

☑Infinite Stratos 2
His ultimate goal is to kill anime.
However, you can stop him. Spread this list!
Variable Frame Rate. Not sure about other shows but Precure uses it a lot.
Basically silly companies master different segments of the show in different framerates, leading to a nice little mess to deal with.
>no source for any of those
Thankfully VFR has become a rarity these days. Pretty much the only time it rears it ugly head is when 60i credits are used (though that in itself is pretty nasty as well, especially when the 60i credits are usually overlaid on 24p animation).
You forgot a space before Infinite Stratos 2
oh fuck, not "That"!
SZS used VFR too, right?
I think so, but it's a pretty old show already. Generally speaking the older digital content we're talking about the more fucked up it is. And things like QTEC upscales tend to make shit even worse.
What's some software of your choice, Daiz?
You listed Rotoscoping twice.
Is that the new ass?
Pretty much everything mentioned in there.
Just asking in case something was missing. I want to learn how to rip/encode BD's too myself, hopefully this is good enough to get me started. I'd rather not sift trough shitty software again.
You might want to check out the Doom9 forum. Just lurking there might be helpful, but of course, don't take everything as truth.
Thanks for the tip, anon, will do.
Well, one extra thing not specifically mentioned there: eac3to for demuxing BDs. You'll also want to get your hands on ArcSoft's DTS-MA decoder to use with eac3to, it's the only way to get actually lossless WAV out of it.
Also, qaac is basically the best AAC encoder available, but it's a bit trickier (not considerably so though) to install than neroaacenc (which is also a good choice, just stay away from ffmpeg/libav).
That's the kind of reply I was hoping for. Thank you for your time Daiz.
Daiz who are the best encoders beside you
Daiz, just been wanting to thank you for the work that you do. And for not caring about the shit you mostly get thrown at you.
Or just decrypt the bd, get the m2ts, and run
ffmpeg -i bd.m2ts -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 320k -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset veryslow -tune animation -vf gradfun out.mkv
done that's it. Or use FLAC.
>And for not caring about the shit you mostly get thrown at you.
He's the most popular trip on /a/ by far.
Is there any way to rid myself of those pesky anti seizure methods?
You know that shit where the screen darkens ever so slightly in scenes with a lot of movement/action? I've noticed it excessively in StB and WCW. It's incredibly jarring, bordering on disorientating.
Since these are the only shows where I find myself actually noticing the effect without attempting to look for it, and that I'm using FFF for both, I'm willing to take a guess that maybe they're doing something to their encode which makes this effect pop/become prominent.
I'm sure other shows are employing this technique too, but I never notice it anywhere else.
Is it just by chance that it's these two exact series where the studio has done a poor job implementing the anti seizure shit? Or is FFF's encode process making the effect pop?
Why don't you compare the FFF encode with the .ts
Never downloaded them before, but it's only 2 gigs, so I'll give it a shot.
MPC plays .ts right?
Watch the early Pokemon episodes if you want a very, very noticeable darken. Particularly when a pokeball releases a pokemon.
I disagree with you slightly on your opinion of it, it's more annoying than it is jarring/disorientating.
>MPC plays .ts right?
Yes, even windows media player can.
I've seen all of Pokemon up to Battle Frontier
Is the effect just more noticeable on an LCD?
I watched Pokemon as it aired here on my old CRT
I haven't downloaded it myself, but they reair some of the S1 episodes now and then on tv, and mine's a CRT. Too poor for a flatscreen so I have no relative comparison there.
Still, in my view there's too many on here that feel entitled to be obnoxious towards fansubbers. Constructive criticism is one thing, but constantly screaming "THEY ARE SHIT!" won't help anything. It's borderline shitposting.
Nah, subgroups usually don't touch it at all, so if it looks like shit in the TV stream, it looks shit in the release.
It was pretty annoying in Symphogear, but usually I don't particular care about it.
>Daiz is a fucking TERRIBLE encoder
Of course it is.
But most of it is directed towards commie and gg. If Daiz is insulted, it's almost always just an anon being tsundere.
He's probably one of those people who think that the smaller the file the better the encode.
Does Daiz start these threads himself?
Good god that is horrifying.
It's like Funimation hates money.
That's worse than the people who think the bigger the file the better the encode.
It's not all FUNi's fault, they were given shitty masters. But they fucked up the contrast bad and then cropped it for "HD."
They're doing it again with the new Blu-Rays, unfortunately. But I have the Dragon Box, so whatever.
No, he just has a script that allows him to jump up whenever somebody mentions him.
>They're doing it again with the new Blu-Rays
Oh god please no.
Daiz would have to have seven different kinds of mental disorders to make a thread about asking how to rip and encode BD's, put on his trip and then start answering himself.
Not that I'm disputing your postulation.
No, I've started one of these and successfully summoned him before.
Unless... Mabe I'm Daiz and I don't know it? oh god
What the fuck. They cropped the video just to make it seem more cinematic? How does that even work? You'll miss out on a quarter of what's actually going on in front of your face.
There can't be any sane person who enjoys this
Always knowing that you are completely missing a part of the picture just outside the frame.
Sadly there are a lot of stupid idiots who go "WHY ISN'T THE PICTURE FILLING THE WHOLE TELLY, WHAT ARE THESE BLACK BARS DOING IN HERE?" and think that they get "more picture" if there's no black bars... even when "no black bars" was achieved by cropping a considerable amount of the picture off.
There better be Dragonbox rips uploaded somewhere. It would be a crime, that everyone who didn't buy them/can't afford the exorbitant rates it goes for even second hand these days couldn't enjoy them.
You guys think it's ridiculous, but there are people who actually want the black bars on the sides of their TV filled, or "don't care" about the cropping. The orange bricks were a lazy rush job and sold well because they have the Faulconer track and were cheap, as well as being the only cumulative DVD release of DBZ in the west.
Hopefully the Blu-Rays don't do well and FUNi learns something from it.
There was one on Nyaa but I think it's gone now.
Hey Daiz, are still bald these days?
Do you have a condition or do you just prefer being a skinhead?
FUNI's D-Frag is also amazing.
Im still mad at funi about my fucked up bluray SEL. FUCK.
What was wrong with it?
>but there are people who actually want the black bars on the sides of their TV filled
I think everyone does. There's not anyone that enjoys black bars due to scaling with aspect ratio. People still use 4:3 monitors/tvs specifically just for 4:3 content so they won't have to see them.
It's quite a longshot from the retardation that is to prefer cropping off a huge portion of the video to achieve that though.
There must be some meaning to the word ___Compression___.
Who is that cute little original character and who is the artist?
>I think everyone does.
Call me out-dated, but I'm still very much suspicious of this flat new video format we're supposed to be enjoying.
>flat new video format
What are you talking about?
Huh. That's a shame, because the BD remaster actually looks very good overall.
The NP-C encode is also decent, so use that if you download it.
If you took old anime and vectored every frame to 1080p while adding in extra things to each side to make it 16:9, how would that look?
This 16x9 crap?
What the fuck?
A proper video is 4x3, so you actually see what's going on.
I feel like I'm peeking out of a letterbox slot.
If the content is made for the format (as opposed to cropping post production) it shouldn't be an issue.
Just explaining how I feel.
>If you took old anime and vectored every frame to 1080p
>while adding in extra things to each side to make it 16:9
It wouldn't work. What are they going to do redraw the entire anime with random shit on the sides trying to make it look like it was actually apart of the original?
>A proper video is 4x3, so you actually see what's going on.
Same with 16:9. Are you implying you have a 4:3 monitor so the only proper video is one that fits your screen?
I don't understand what you're trying to say.
A proper video is 2k now actually.
Apparently the human eye's field of view is pretty close to 4:3.
thank you hollywood
>What are they going to do redraw the entire anime with random shit on the sides trying to make it look like it was actually apart of the original?
>anime uses the smaller field of view to hide a plot point
>redrawn version is full of spoilers
They could move the center to the left or right or they could vignette it.
