What is the appeal of Toriko?

How has such a simple premise managed to run for 6 years?

time sure does fly, why am I even alive still

Things are going to get better anon, you just wait.

>Toriko isn't that popular in /a/
>mfw I thought Toriko was just a fairly recent anime
>>
>>101903583

Toriko is part of the big three in Japan - One Piece, Naruto, and Toriko are the most popular franchises.

It was beating Naruto before Naruto started its supposed final arc.
>>
>>101903525
>How has such a simple premise managed to run for 6 years?
Jump is really, really desperate for a new 3B and they're still hoping that Toriko might be 'it'.
>>
>>101903469
Toriko anime is shit. I always read Toriko manga when I have a meal, it increase appetite by 100%
>>
>>101903469
The same thing that got One Piece popular at first, interesting powers and a crazy setting that allowed for almost anything.
Fighting evil robots inside a giant mammoth? Why not?
Also it's fun seeing the food / creatures
>>
>>101903469

>How has such a simple premise managed to run for 6 years?

Because WSJ really, really, REALLY wants another huge hit to the point they overmarket it so that it can keep growing and make the magazine relevant after Naruto ends.

It hasn't been working too well, anyway. It barely sells above Bleach and that series has less volumes per year and no anime support.

Jump it's doing not that great today, they (and toei) are really pushing toriko, they want it to be the new great hit (it's kinda there but not really).
They are also adding and canceling new mangas all the time since 2012, like if they the new titles are not in the top half of the rankings in a moth shueshia just kill them, the need/want an instant hit like one piece naruto or bleach when they begin

I can confirm this
>>
>>101909394
Jump actually has a really good lineup for a while right now, but I can see they lack the succesfor for their traditional battle mangas.

It's like nobody wants to make them anymore

Toriko went from pretty gud to below mediocre in the past 2 years. The Author suddenly decided to crank up the crazy, and broke the manga with it.
>>
>>101903640
>It was beating Naruto
Only in Toc, for few months. Toriko was near the bottom during its first year but there was always some 8-chapters-manga just below it so it avoided the axe. It only started ranking high when anime was shaping up to become never ending.
>>
>>101909868
what is the actual jump lineup? it's been years since the last time i read something from them i think it was bakuman back in 2011

I'm reading only half of them, but I know there isn't any significant battle manga in the rankings.
>>
Simple premises don't make a story bad.

Technically One Piece is about a young boy who wants to find a legendary treasure.
And it's the most succesful manga ever by now, isn't it?
>>
>Mangaka is best buds with Oda, crossovers with One Piece abound
>Airs right before One Piece on Sunday mornings
>Often includes reader-submitted designs in background pages and the like

Take your pick.
>>
>>101909889
No, it wasn't. It was always above middle until Ice Hell came and it frequently stay on top
>>
I'm withholding judgement until more of the heavily implied plot is revealed, but in the meantime I can't say I hate reading each week's chapter.

It's shaping up to be one fucking long manga, it'll be around for a while whether it's good or not.

Last week ranking
Illegal Rare (new manga no sinopsis)
Naruto- battle manga
One Piece- battle manga
Toriko- battle manga
Assassination Classroom- not battle manga
Haikyuu!!- not battle manga
Shokugeki no Soma- not battle manga
Kuroko no Basket- not battle manga
World Trigger- kinnda battle manga?
Nisekoi - not battle manga
PSI Kusuo Saiki- not battle manga
Gintama- kinda but not really a battle manga
Soul Catcher(S)- generic battle manga
Kochikame- not battle manga
Isobe Isobee Monogatari - not battle manga
Bleach-battle manga
Iron Knight-battle manga
Beelzebub-battle manga
Koi no Cupid Yakenohara Jin-not battle manga
Hachi- i have no fucking idea

So from 20 mangas....9 to11 are only battle mangas on the fucking shonen jump, how about that shit?
>>
>>101913745
>bleach
>that low

That is just sad Kubo-kun....
>>
>>101913745
So cancelled it hurts.
>>
>>101913842
>That is just sad Kubo-kun....
Positions don't matter if your volumes sell more than 100.000. Bleach could be last place for all WSJ cared.
>>
>>101914066
yeah that it's true but it also means that his editor must be all over him, and i think i wont feel very good myself if my creations were that low in the ranking
>>
>>101913745
>Assassination Classroom- not battle manga
>Kuroko no Basket- not battle manga
Come on.
>>
>>101914123
>kugo
>giving a shit
>>
>>101903469
because is well liked...among the staff of Jump, that's why the series had like 2 crossover with the best selling titles of Jump.
Besides of that, people watch it blindly because they need a shonen so badly
>>
>>101914286
what? they are not really "battle mangas" with power levels and shit yet they have actions that's different....right...?
>>
>>101914123
After so many years I guess one can feel when low rankings are a threat or not. It will probably jump higher in next chapters.
>>
>>101909868

Just wait till they learn to fly and go to space.
>>
>>101914456
AssClass has battle manga elements but hasn't go full battle yet, I could see it going though.

Kuroko no Basket has powerlevels, superpowers, and battle shonen tropes.
>>
>>101913745
KnB is essentially a generic battle manga with the battle moves replaced with magic basketball
>>
>>101913842
Kubo is set for life. I doubt he's sad.
>>
>>101903469
There is no appeal. Toriko's author is just best friends with Eiichiro Oda so he uses his connections to promote the shit out of Toriko and keep it from getting cancelled.

Toriko just takes the worst parts of One Piece and Hunter x Hunter and exacerbates them.
>>
>>101915423
Well, that explains why he did Toriko, just after being put int he jail for being pedo
>>
I can maybe understand if you only watched the anime. When it comes to Toriko, you READ that shit. It's also better if you recognize it as the parody/tribute to old-school manly fight'n series that it is.

But mostly, I read it because it's fun

silly anon mangas are not for fun
>>
>>101914456
I guess you haven't seen how they shout their moves out loud or the constant comparison of skill level between the players or anything like that.
>>
>>101903640
Toriko is only part of the Big3 because the editors went to crazy lengths to make it that way. Even then, its sales aren't that great for the level of promotion its gotten. Toriko at its highest was still less than Bleach at its lowest.

They want it to be Big3 so badly, but its just not.
>>
>>101917063
It's ridiculously bad, but it is kind of fun.
>>
>>101909394
Imagine Jump's face when they reject Snk's first draft since it was too violence. Right now it's 2nd behind One Piece in JP sales.
>>
>>101903469
>How has such a simple premise managed to run for 6 years?
The manga was pretty great at first, but it's been primarily kept alive by riding on One Piece's coat tail.
>>
>>101917498
SnK isn't Jump's cup of tea. If it got published by them it would have been completely differenent and it wouldn't have gotten as popular.
>>
>>101903469
I like Toriko, It's fun things that isn't moeshit.
>>
>>101917612
Well, it wouldn't have been in Weekly. They could have put it in like, Ultra Jump right?
>>
>>101918275
Still the themes in SnK are a bit too much for Jump's usual series.
>>
>>101918464
TLR Darkness is in Ultra Jump though. If that goes, anything goes I would think?
>>
>>101918580
Ultra Jump is seinen, TLRD is in Jump SQ. And it's a different kind of themes.
>>
>>101917612
yeah, pretty much, also the art would be better
>>
Are there hot girls in this manga?
>>
>>101918723
Yeah, the edittors would be much stricter with that shit.

>>
>>101918794
OVA Toriko was so much better. Too bad even the manga went to shit.
>>
>>101918794
Given the crime he was charged with its kind of funny how that works out.
>>
>>101919151
There's barely any women, most are old hags, except for Rin who is a tomboy.
>>
Because Jump has been shoving it down people's throats, despite it being a sub-par shonen.
>>
>>101913745
9 to 11, and even of those only 5 are pure battle mangas (in terms of classical battle shounen style.)

The rest are just comedy manga with occasional combat and flashy finishers.

Also it sadden's me to see Iron Knight so low, it shows some potential.
>>
It's not all that great, but SJ knows that Bleach and Naruto are heading out the door and they need things to fill it.

Toriko is the best they can do right now, so they're putting their eggs in that basket.
>>
>>101913842

He really isn't. He's made his monkey, like Kishimoto. They both know they can cruise on autopilot right to the end.
>>
Unless people really like ridiculous power creep, I don't see how anyone can like Toriko. It's got all the cliche's of shonen manga, but doesn't pull them off very well.

And the level of ability has jumped so much in such a short time, it's hard to imagine them not just destroying countries in a few punches by the mid-year.

Hell, the big bad turned out not to even be the REAL big bad, and his attack devastated the entire planet.
>>
>>101919805
But they fail to realize that Ass Class and BasuGAY are more popular with readers.
>>
>>101920099
and neither of those are long running battle manga.
>>
>>101920003
The only things that make Toriko not be absolute crap are the concept, some of the abilities, and some characters and beasts. The execution though has been absolute crap, and it panders to younger kids every arc.
>>
>>101903469
I normally can handle weird/obnoxious art when the story is entertaining but damn I disliked the MC from the start and the side characters were dull, the story wasn't really interesting to keep me reading.
>>
>>101903469
This shit is so gay I can't stop watching it.
I haven't started the manga yet. Did Sunny really eat Tommyrod?

Shueisha is so desperate in making Toriko the next "Big Thing" considering they don't anything else promising

they could have gotten Attack on Titan but...
>>
>>101923356
Meh, if I would want anything with real potential, I'd go for Nanatsu no Taizai.
>>
>>101923356
SnK isn't a typical, power level battle sh┼Źnen either. It's closer to FMA.
>>
>>101919151
Either he's doing it to steer away attention from his crime, or he got raped in the ass so hard during his sentence he switched sides.

Faggotry either way.
>>
>>101918729
The manga is incredibly homoerotic, there is literally 1 female character
>>
>>101924011
There are more than 1, but the only other ones who come to mind are either old as hell or actually undead.
>>
>>101909868
>The Author suddenly decided to crank up the crazy, and broke the manga with it.
Isn't that exactly what happened to Wan Piss?
>>
>>101924460
No, wan piss did the powerlevel thing rather well, and made a time skip that made sense in context.

Toriko on other hands just needlessly increases powerlevels by a factor of 1000 every time a battle is over.
