In manga, when a character gets spaced out with the ボー～ onomatopoeia, you really get a feel for the atmosphere in that image. Japanese onomatopoeia is really way more layered than Western usage of the same, which sort of comes across as comical or outrageous. (ie WHAM BAM SMASH CRACK)
Why are japanese onomatopoeia so cute?
learning jap has been worth it just to be able to read zawas in their native runes
you can't really take a word seriously when it's just "ham" with a "w" in front of it
can't wait for english 3.0 to mainstream japanese onomatopoeia so we can ditch the shitty system we're currently using
