The ending wasn't as miserable as I thought it would be.
Sure, a bunch of bad shit happened and Aiko died but all in all things seem to have ended pretty well. Could have been a lot worse at least.
It all happens again, maybe twice. The girl in the school is just like Aiko and the uncle's son has God Himself in his eye.
Aiko had by far the worst life of all the characters.
Asano probably hates her because he will never be like her no matter how hard he transvestite.
It could have been worse, but it also could have been better.
I'm not even sure if it satifisfied or betrayed my expectations.
The "message" if there's any in a story like Punpun's, that even though you're fucked up, it's okay to learn to achieve your own idea of happiness is pretty hopeful. But then you also have characters like Aiko whose only crime was to have been born in a shitty family and that life fucked over for no good reason from the reader's perspective. So yeah, I'm ranting but I have mixed feelings (leaning towards positive) with this ending.
I'm still fucking crying over punpuns dream
>It could have been worse, but it also could have been better.
Of course it could have been better, but given how damn cynical the story was all the way through I don't think anyone was expecting things to end well.
And I guess they didn't really, but at least we got a nice "but life goes on and babies are born and eventually you might find happiness" -feeling out of it. I'm glad the author didn't try to sugar coat anything when it came to Aiko. It's saddening but people like her really exists. Life's pretty fucked up sometimes.
>But then you also have characters like Aiko whose only crime was to have been born in a shitty family and that life fucked over for no good reason from the reader's perspective.
Yeah that left my with a bitter feeling.
Why didn't you protect her smile, /a/?
Who was god?
I mean I know who he was in the story. But who was used as the face? A famous person? The author's friend?
It's saddening people like her exist and get the exact same treatment she did.
I'm not hating on punpun here, even though he's not exactly my favorite character.
Just that I'd act differently, starting from when she met punpun at his place.
Cuz my stupid mom 'fell' off the hospital balcony.
Practically shit my pants.
but who or what was God supposed to be? cynicism? schizophrenia?
The author himself. That sadistic bastard.
He's like Drosselmeyer from Princess Tutu.
God was him. :)
Came for the silly surrealism. Stayed for the realistic drama.
Aiko didn't do anything wrong
Yes she did. She hung herself instead of just telling the police the truth and living happily ever af... af... ;____;
Still don't know if I should even read this, considering I'm currently going through severe depression that goes on and off every day and then. I feel like I could break down at any given moment if I don't tell myself to keep struggling.
It's a fucking phase isn't it? I want to believe it is, so that I know it'll be over soon. I can't stand being so emotionally weak, when in the past I've told myself I'm emotionally strong and don't need the company of others. It's like I don't even know myself anymore. Sorry for the blog post
>implying she could live a happy life with a psychopath like Punpun. She sacrificed herself so he could live on his miserable life
It was so booooooooooooooooring
>The end of the world! be excited!
You didn't actually think the world was gonna end, did you?
Well no of course but from that to nothing at all happening
What was the point of the vibrator guy
No, you shouldn't read this if you're depressed.
Try Neon Genesis Evangelion, it'll cheer you up. It has awesome robot fights and a cute tsundere girl. A lot of fun to be had.
Yeah it's just a phase.
A phase that lasts 40-50 years or however long until you die.
Punpun is babbies first existential crisis.
you definitely shouldnt read it then
it made me pretty depressed because i could relate so much with the main character at some points
How old are you
You are also mentally retarded?
He's also incapable of standing for himself and getting shit done.
Well duh, we're in 4chan.
He was just talking to himself.
>Implying it wasn't a total bad end.
Girl he loved since school hangs herself.
He's stuck doing a job he only does out of convenience.
Manga girl decided to keep the ex-husband's baby. (He gets to fuck her raw, but not PunPun.)
He's still neurotic as fuck and a total pushover.
I mean, I guess he didn't go to prison.
I don't know if you are being sarcastic or what, but Evangelion seriously is pretty uplifting for a depressed person.
Thanks for reminding me to finish this, I read the first 5 volumes but haven't read it in a couple weeks.
I'll leave and not read anything here.
He was probably just the devil on your shoulder.
The dude telling you do to asshole shit.
Also how come is Punpun and his family are depicted as birds? I stopped caring because I got that sucked into the story, but was it because that's how Punpun saw the world?
>no matter what, i'll never be as pathetic ans Shinji
Probably just to contrast how fucking awful the world is.
I thought it was a way to describe Punpun's emotional state, let him stand out more and make the reader relate to him better. You can't help but feel empathy for that innocent little bird thing.
Its just Punpun talking to himself for fucks sake.
Because in the last 2 minutes Shinji finally goes "I guess life is worth living after all"?
The overall message may be positive, but it's still pretty hard to watch. EoE especially.
those last two are in response to why he's a stylized bird you idiot
It's extremely obviously the devil on the shoulder thing. Which basically is talking to yourself...
I will never understand why people on /a/ get mad about people looking into something beyond surface value. Especially people like you say the exact same thing and don't even realize it.
Just got around to reading the last two volumes. Not sure how I feel about it.
We're talking about the bird things, not the God-face-man-thing.
Seriously, whose face is that?
if i pull that off, will you die?
It would be extremely painful.
It would be very painful
>That entire chapter.
The face he makes when she comes to his house and he fakes having a cold, oh man.
I think Asano was planning to make a full comedy manga, and somehow in his tranny way he tried to add drama.
When is *her* tranny manga coming out anyway?
Anata wa okina otokodearu
Biggest bitch in history.
Anata no tame ni
She was ok.
The author is a tranny?
She's alright. It's hard competing with Aiko.
He looks normal, he just said once he'd like to be a woman or something.
I GUESS WE'LL HAVE A TEST FIRST PERIOD!
I was diagnosed with clinical depression 2 years ago.
I read it after the diagnosis
sure its pretty bad, but not like it can get much worse anyways.
go ahead and read it, the story is great, and the "art" is really nice.
and to the people arguing over who "god" is, i thought it was pretty much agreed upon that he is the representations of Punpuns Freudian id
Why did you put art in quotations?
Also oh man would I ever buy a shirt with God's face on it.
With this final volume you start to think that professor didn't actually went full retard when Punpun said he forgot his homework.
because alot of it is just photos with a filter applied to them.
And you CAN buy a tshirt with gods face on it, i actually got one in navy blue. you can get em from perplexi tees, its run but an /a/non.
The backgrounds are mostly filters, but I like the way he draws people as well. The two work great together.
I still don't understand why punpun looked like >>101862840 for a while. Could someone elaborate?
And overall I liked the ending. I expected an ending with more morals in it, but this works as well. You know, such is life.
Perplexi needs a search bar.
How's the shirt quality? I've had some pretty abysmal online shirts.
Punpun is a complete dumb asshole.
How did he avoid the jail ?
She literally did anything she could to help Punpun.
>How did he avoid the jail ?
I figured he went to jail and got into probation later. Sachi's child was already like 3 years old at the end if I remember correctly.
It's just Punpun shutting himself off from the rest of the world to avoid breaking. Doesn't open up to other people so they can't hurt him, can't get any better but he also can't get any worse.
The only reference to it was this page, I think.
She was litterally too good for punpun yes.
But did she continue to help him after having know the "case" ?
The worst things he did were stab a woman in self-defense and help a dying abused girl evade capture.
>I still don't understand why punpun looked like >>101862840
He was just putting barriers around himself. He was locked inside that facade to protect himself of the contact with others.
He didn't commit a crime.
Well, I guess she did.
He killed a crippled woman, buried the body, stole the victim's car and the person he was with was later found dead.
WE know the circumstances but it certainly doesn't look good on the outside.
Oh gosh, yes, I didn't remember she decided to keep the baby...
its actually quite alright, i washed it a few tmes in 70 to 90 degrees temperature and it hasnt worn off. As you would expect from all graphic tees, there appeared tiny spots in the face, but all in all iam quite happy with it.
agreed, i am not saying his art is bad, i personally love it, all aspects of it, but alot of people seem to not like calling it art since its filters. Pic related is probably my favourite picture from the series.
and i think i remember people saying that he was a pyramid/triangle at that point in time because its the most stable shape, showing that he locked himself away from everyone into his small stable world
Evangelion is quite seriously, the most uplifting television show I've ever seen. The journey is hard as fuck, but in the end it makes you feel like a better person. The show actually motivated me to fix my life. To this day I'm glad I saw it, because I don't know what would have happened to my life otherwise.
He didn't kill her. Aiko did. There was a lot of evidence laying around the crime scene and the autopsy would support it. The fact that she wasn't actually crippled would probably lend a lot of credit to Punpun's explanation either way.
Thank you very much for clearing that up. It makes a lot of sense now.
Like >>101864408 said, probation. I assume they took the circumstances into account and went easy on him.
And I feel sorry for Aiko. I liked >>101862764 over her, but she did have it rough.
He'd just go with the flow again and get canned.
Punpun was completely broken in both mind and body at that point. He might have just answered honestly out of sheer, numb apathy.
But going all like "she was flailing the knife around so I jumped at her, knocked it out of her hand and started choking her until she stopped moving" isn't going to make him look any good, stab wounds or not.
She stabbed him with a pair of scissors as well. Though that was while he was choking her.
She also stabbed the shit out of Aiko.
at a point, this manga just turns into "how many things can fuck up in a dude's life?"
it got pretty fucking intense, especially when pun pun went beating up the dude at the gas station mode.
i liked it though, the last panel with punpun going back to himself was worth it
Yes she did, but it still doesn't make him look too good.
That he decided to steal the car and run away also isn't working in his favor. Can't really remember if they disposed of the body though.
She wasn't just flailing the knife around. She was actively stabbing Aiko and trying to stab Punpun. She even left a huge knife gash in the door when she tried to kill him.
I don't think they'd have a hard time letting him off with self-defense given the circumstances. It's all of the shit he did after that got him in trouble.
>Kindly old landlord gets tackled by the fucking clerk and ends up paralyzed.
>The fucking bitch who accused him of shoplifting runs off.
Never been so mad while reading a manga.
Depends what counts as self-defense in nippon.
Because there actually are countries out there in which breaking someone's arm to disarm him is exceeding self-defense, for example.
Pegasus broke her nose later, at least.
Damn, didn't realize that.
I like how the dude he beat up was literally Asano Inio himself.
>If your act is legally acknowledged as a justifiable defense, you will not be arrested. A justifiable defense can be classified as an act unavoidably performed to protect your rights against imminent and unlawful infringement. It all depends, but a witness can be the best proof that the act was one of defense. Even if you have no personal or physical evidence, the circumstances can prove that it was an act of defense; for example, the police or the court may assume that it was an act of defense if you harmed a stranger in your own house.
It sounds like Japanese self-defense law isn't all that different than ours.
His witness hung herself and they killed the woman in her own home.
I figured the reason Punpun got off fine was because nobody realized he was even part of it.
The dude at the gas station was supposed to be himself, since they were wearing the same clothes and several shots made it look like he had a black head from behind.
The cops interrogated him. They knew.
He was seen at the crime scene.
He was also seen with a dead body, who happened to be the victim's daughter.
Pretty sure they realized he was somehow involved.
I'm crying so fucking hard
I was kind of hoping that Sachi's child would be a bird and therefore mean it was Punpun's all along ;_;
So, who child was it with nanjo?
Sorry for asking bluntly.. I mean.. was there even a reference where it was stated it wasn't Punpun's?? I thought it was Punpun's child all along and Nanjo did once say about Punpun taking responsibility..
Did I miss something? Because people here seem to believe the child isn't Punpun's.
I'm glad Seki and Shimizu made it out mostly okay. I was worried since they'd get it pretty bad.
>Never been so mad while reading a manga.
That pissed me off so much.
>was there even a reference where it was stated it wasn't Punpun's?
I'm fairly sure Sachi herself said it back when it was found out she was pregnant.
>I'm glad Seki and Shimizu made it out mostly okay.
Shimizu died in a fire and Seki became the exact thing about Shimizu he disliked
He made it out alive. Shut up.
>only crime was to have been born in a shitty family and that life fucked over for no good reason
Just like in real life. It sucks but it's the truth.
sure he did seki
sure he did
Bullshit. Aiko was as much of a coward or worse than Punpun.
>Shimizu was in Punpunia with the ones who died
>Shimizu's family wasn't waiting for him when he's seen leaving the hospital
>only Seki interacts with Shimizu
>makes an excuse about why he couldn't show up for the class reunion.
Seki went bananas.
Good. Glad we got that sorted.
I don't think Pun Pun had a serious message. The MC doesn't learn anything or become a better person he just grows into an adult and moves on. It's more akin to a fucked up coming of age story than anything.
>noone will translate his new mango
the message is about facing reality instead of running from it
no matter how shitty that reality may be
Shit, that started already? And nobody is translating it? How the fuck do we get this to happen?
There aren't any scans, even. Came out like 28 December I think.
I thought the dude was just crazy rather than an escapist.
Hox doesn't want to translate it. We are fucked
i imagine hox will once the volumes start going on sale
the whole part about ending up killing her mother abd then going on the run together felt so lame and unnecessary, like you'd already seen or read that sort of story 10 times before
you should probably reread it
he goes from writing off/just kind of ignoring obvious domestic abuse and such things as a kid to moving out on his own to skipping around the country immediately after killing someone to planning to himself
everything he ever does is trying to escape
Well, time to learn Japanese. I've been dragging my heels on this forever, anyway.
Wasn't he already disturbed prior to his mother getting KO'd?
planning to kill himself*
True enough, but you can't say it wasn't fitting for the characters. And it gave Punpun and Aiko the time to slowly resolve things. Which at least wasn't done in too cliche a way, either.
>>Shimizu's family wasn't waiting for him
Aren't they all dead?
>>makes an excuse about why he couldn't show up for the class reunion.
But he was busy. ;_;
No. He only started being crazy after Aiko's mom death.
Yeah but he was seeing that freaky face dude from the beginning.
Well, from everything shown, my interpretation was that his parents regularly argued before that and he already was kind of blocking that out. If I remember right that's pretty much established.
That one fight is the violent event that really sets off the tension already there.
He didn't actually see him. it was his imagination. Just like him being a caricature, he didn't really see himself like that.
Yeah. But to be more exact was his mother in particular what he was always trying to ignore. She had some kind of bipolar disorder or some shit. As she recalls when had cancer, one time even told kindergartener Punpun she would kill him and then suicide since it was partly his fault that her life had to be shitty forever.
She might have been making it up though. I clearly remember a tissue in between Sachi's legs after she had sex with Punpun, indicated he nutted inside her. She could be just lying so as to not force Punpun to commit to her based on that only. She seemed pretty interested in him being in her life afterwards, also.
But that was before a one year timeskip. He couldn't even possibly be the father.
Sachi got pregnant from her ex. She told Punpun they fucked during s time when Punpun didn't want to see her. When she pans to get an abortion asks Punpun if he's going to go with her as a favor but says he doesn't have to do it if he doesn't want since it's not his responsibility. When she talks with her friend they talk about it and she tells Sachi it's not ok to make Punpun compromise with that.
Just because something happens in real life or is "realistic" doesn't mean I want to read about it. Sure, there are Aikos out there, but they're not the characters of a story I got to follow for years, and people for whom I hoped for a better future. It's not like there needs to be a point, but what was the point? Some people have shit lives and you can't do anything about it!
I feel Asano was playing with my emotions until the end of volume 12. I mean some people were STILL hoping for a "good" end for Aiko and not for her to fucking hang herself in the middle of nowhere.
It's a bad end. but not the kind of tragic bad end where MC gets fucked and it's the end of the world. What makes it a really bad end is that shit happens and then life keeps moving on. And what Punpun thought as the most important thing in life starts fading away from his memories as time passes by. That's the part that really got me the most: nothing is that special, no one is really that imprescindible in your life: even when the worst happens you have to move on and the world will keep continue spinning like if nothing happened. Fuck, just remembering it makes me want to get drunk until I pass out on my bed.
Oh fuck, that's who gets a nosebleed. Thank you, my day has been made.
Fuck that cunt.
I personally enjoyed the plot and how Punpun's personality evolves (with some parallelisms with my life at some parts). There's a lot of characters characters with interesting visions of life and that kind of stuff.
I didn't think about this aspect, fuck you for making things even worse. I guess I'll have a drink as well...
hox already has a lot of projects that he's currently working on.
>dat punpun figure
Where did you get it from?
Would you agree the ending may be summed up as "life goes on"?
I still really fucking want that t-shirt where it's just Punpun's bird head on a plain white tee, and it stretches from the bottom to above where the chest would be.
I'm sure you could get it printed yourself if you can find a large enough image.
I can probably vector his head and increase the res, I'd prefer younger Punpun anyways.
What would also be cool would be a collage all-over print of all of Punpun's faces.
Damn, thank you for the idea, getting excited.
Tile this over the whole shirt. I'd be great.
Holy shit, that'd be fucking great. I'd probably lower the contrast and saturation so it doesn't end up too vibrant and visually annoying.
He has his father and a sister.
It's just a clay figure I made
brb buying clay
Ye me too.
Don't forget the steel wire for the feet
Isn't this just a oneshot though?
