How come Gintama isn't more popular?
I just watched the latest movie and everything about it was pretty well done. I cried like a bitch several times too
Its one of the best selling Jump manga is Japan, not sure how much more popular it could get.
I tried watching it a few years ago. Dropped it around ep 3 I think.
>In Japan, the Gin Tama manga has been popular, selling over 44 million volumes as of July 2013. The anime and its DVDs have been featured, at various time, in Top Ten of their respective media, while TV Tokyo has announced that the first Gin Tama anime was responsible for high sales overseas along with the anime adaptation from Naruto. Publications for manga, anime and others have commented on the Gin Tama manga. Positive response have focused on the comedy and characters from the series, while negative responses concern the manga's artwork.
If it's so popular why aren't they continuing the anime...
Not enough material
How come OP can't be more stupider than he already is?
They explained this in one of the episodes.
I'm a shounenfag and I also love the shit out of retarded comedy anime. You'd think that I'd be a big fan of Gintama, but it never hooked me. I'm currently stalled at episode 56.
It's funny, but not really funny enough to carry the series through the 19 or so hours I saw. I was kind of hoping it'd have some more substance behind the scenes. One Piece is similar, with a goofy surface, but by episode 56 Arlong Park was finished and they had just gotten onto the Grand Line.
Meanwhile, in Gintama... something about strawberry milk.
Keep watching it, it only gets better.
>Love retarded comedy anime
>Comparing adventure show to pure gag show.
Or maybe you're just stupid.
Gintama isn't exactly a pure gag show either since it does have serious arcs. Certainly closer to one than One Piece though.
It grows over time. It took me over the course of 3 years to finish it. And it's extremely enjoyable once you fully know each person's personality.
As a fan of both series, I can honestly say that I find One Piece funnier than Gintama 90% of the time.
Gintama is extremely popular. What are you talking about? You just don't see threads about it as often anymore because it isn't airing any new episodes.
Maybe you just can't understand the nuances of Gintama's comedy.
This was the last one I watched. I think it's pretty representative of my reaction to the series as a whole. I appreciate the gag. It's solidly amusing, but there's nothing really pulling me on to the next episode.
OP's asking why it isn't more popular. As someone it didn't hook, I replied with my best guess as to why.
I brought OP up as a popular example from the same magazine which features a large dose of retardation but manages to have a lot of substance to it.
You should get into the habit of using words literally, not just as general emphasis.
I never got why people don't like the artwork. I mean it's nothing great but the character designs are interesting and the backgrounds are consistently good.
He probably did mean it literally. Gintama's gotten better ratings than some of the Big Three a few times. I think it's actually been doing better than Bleach for a while now.
In the west, Japan, /a/ or in general? Your failure to be specific creates confusion.
>Two Gintama threads on /a/
What is this sorcery?
I don't mind, Gintama threads are the only ones on this board I can actually participate in.
I'm sorry to inform you, but it's hasn't been 2008 for some time now.
The top Jump series are all over the place, but you generally see AssClass, Shokugeki no Souma, World Trigger, Kuroko's Basket and Naruto competing for second place.
Toriko has fallen from grace despite Jump's passive push for it, but it consistently ranks higher than Bleach.
>it hasn't been 2008 for some time now
Wait what? Oh fuck, Scrubs is cancelled.
Don't worry it'll be back next year on ABC, trust me I'm from the future.
gag manga a shit
Obviously it's because Gintoki doesn't have a special attack.
I can't believe they didn't adapt the second appearance of that guy.
It all comes down to personal taste really and whether you appreciate the kind of jokes they do, I've recently gotten up to the 5th season though and every episode has been gold, compared to the other seasons where about half the episodes would be hit and miss with the arcs/jokes
Well the earlier artwork of the manga is of... debatable quality, but the Gorilla has gotten a LOT better.
It's not as popular in the west, but it's certainly popular in Japan.
The Big Three is more of the online manga community's term than the native one's. Popularity shifts now and again in Jump but the Big Three's always been Bleach, Naruto and One Piece when mentioned here.
They're tagged as such because they are the most entry tier of the entry tier.
I love the show, but it makes it hard for me to watch because of her, its like having a diamond dick whenever shes on the screen But I can watch TLR for the plot
>I cried like a bitch several times too
I always felt the "serious" arcs were forced drama bullshit, but holy crap the last couple of arcs made cry like a bitch too. It must have been the spicy chips.
Work on your reading comprehension man.
>I always felt the "serious" arcs were forced drama bullshit
No, just no.
it was only ever a term among western fandom. It only ever did, and only ever WILL refer to OP, Bleach, Naruto.
people trying to say "oh but Toriko is top 3 in jump now, oh but Fairy Tail is top 3 overall now, oh but SnK is suddenly popular can it be big three?" are fuckheads
See, that right there does nothing for me, yet her normally in the show is like a goddamn miracle. I think I just can't get off to oversexualized designs.
If anyone has input towards this, heres a doujin that is good. http://exhentai.org/g/655104/20ddd3f3c2/
It's quite silly how the series is mainly comedy while the serious arcs are better than in pretty much every other shounen that's supposed to be "serious". The latest arc left me with wanting more of that new girl as well.
Yup. The Hosen arc made me cringe from all the edginess. The four devas arc was boring as hell except the bits about the old hag's backstory.
Get some taste.
Serious arc ranking:
1. The newest animated one
3. Shinsengumi arc with the traitor glasses guy
Prove me wrong.
I love when they do stuff like the dog story on the radio.
What other show can have you laughing your ass off, then crying your eyes out, then screaming in terror, and back to busting your balls again like this
How will Gintama end, guys?
Anime or manga?
Gintoki and Takasugi finally fight, meanwhile Kamui becomes king of the universe and that slut otae dies of cancer from sucking so many dog penises.
A rare occurrence where the anime is actually better than the manga.
Because 2014 is Gundam year.
And we already had 200+ episodes. We wouldn't be getting that many if it isn't popular.
>I also love the shit out of retarded comedy anime
Exactly. Gintama is too intelligent for you, that's why you won't enjoy it.
Except this thread is a stupid bait thread started by a retarded newfag. That other thread is the proper one.
It was called the Big 3 because back then those really were the top 3. Now they aren't, therefore you can't continue to call it Big 3 anymore.
It's a simple concept.
It's because the humour relies too much on japanese cultire.
A normal fag wouldn't get half the references.
It's easily one of the most popular series ever though.
>One Piece is similar, with a goofy surface, but by episode 56 Arlong Park was finished and they had just gotten onto the Grand Line.
>Meanwhile, in Gintama... something about strawberry milk.
If you think about it thats another joke. A shounen manga would try to create a story that progresses and goes deeper into the characters. Gintama... something about strawberry milk.
They're still commonly called the Big Three in the western fandom and until that term stops being commonly associated with those three, THEN they aren't the Big Three. Again, in the western fandom.
Gintoki had said that his goal is to become the King of the Samurai, so I guess it will end with his coronation ceremony.
Havent been keeping up with shounenshit.
What is the big three now?
One Piece is a given.
Bleach is fading
Naruto is fading
HxH still on hiatus
What is left?
Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kouen Mae Hashutsujo
>Daisuke Sakaguchi is a huge AKB48 fan
>Shinpachi is an idol otaku
>Sakaguchi and Sugita were really into Love Plus
>Love Plus arc
>Sugita and Nakamura are maximum bros
>Nakamura is cast as Kintoki
>Sugita keeps doing Gundam impressions and jokes
>he still isn't Gundam
This show is meta as fuck.
>How come Gintama isn't more popular?
Gintama is wildly popular
Did anyone else try to watch the movie on KMPlayer? I get this problem where the player stops working when it comes to the scene where Kagura waves the screen and talks to us the viewers.
>Sugita still not Gundam
You told me this was the best comedy animay ever and cramps-tier funny, /a/.
You didn't mention the feels
Just not in the west, sadly. It's hella popular in Japan though.
>Just not in the west
You mean /a/ right?
It is like #1 on MAL
That's because of how MAL ratings work. Overall the people who watch it to the end generally find it very good. But it doesn't have as much widespread popularity as it does in Japan.
They really catch you off-guard at times. Of course we wouldn't want to spoil that.
Sorachi had already some of the VAs in mind when he wrote the characters and later adapted the rest of them to their VAs and keeps adding VA jokes.
M-maybe he'll have a role in Gundam Build Fighters, or a role in the upcoming Gundam.
mfw the only reason I started going to /a/ was for Gintama
