What do you think about anime conventions , /a/ ?
I've never been there, but there is one next week, really close to where i live. I thought it could be fun , am I wrong?
>>
>>101803968
Don't tell anyone that they're waifu a shit and ignore the autists. Other than that, they're generally fun.
>>
After you get used to the loud weeaboos in cosplay, it can be fun.
>>
>>101804201
Do people actually unironically do this waifu shit in real life?
>>
>>101803968
Depends
>>
>>101804297
I've never seen it but I haven't been to a convention in years. Maybe retards started picking it up.
>>
The only advice I give you is don't go alone, it'll be more fun if you're with a friend. Aside from that, just go with the flow and have fun.
>>
I went to AX last summer by myself since I don't have any friends that like this shit.

I had a good time and met a bunch of cool people but it would have been better if I went with someone.

Best part was the Mega64 panel and watching Wolf Children.

Worst part was Homestuck cosplayers.

While this is a >>>/cgl/ topic, you're asking for an opinion from people on /a/ so I'm game

I'm been to about 6 or 7 cons over the years, and I'm beginning to regret it. It seemed like a fun idea at first, people with similar interests and other shit to do, mostly buying stuff and playing vidya. But trying to start a conversation is quite literally like wading through a seal of fat walrus; it's smelly, tiring, and by the time you're done you'll be to pissed of and tired to even have one. If you do manage to talk to someone all the conversation amounts to;
"That show was awesome and shit"
"Yeah it was"
"I loved when x did that thing"
"It was great"
"I think x is the best and really loved the realtionship he had with y"
"Huh
"Yeah they were totally in love"
etc
This was the case for both girls and boys I talked to.

Most people are casual and cosplay or like a series just be apart of something bigger. I tried talking to someone who liked SAO over some drinks, and while he would admit some faults they never resonated with him and he just brushed it off and told me it was "fun".

Other than buying shit its really not worth it, unless you have some friends of your own to bring with you to the con you won't make any strong friendships from the ordeal.

In the end I've grown really bored of the whole con scene, I hate the people I'm around and while I came in with the mentality to have fun, everybody else seems to have autism as they do shit that is really inappropriate or awkward for all involved. The stories you hear from cons are usually very true.

tl:dr
I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to buy shit or have friends to go with.

Sorry to bring you the news but conventions anywhere but Japan are just normalfag meetings. Do you really enjoy seeing bunch of casuals in Naruto cosplay?
>>
I'd like to go with some anons
but this isn't /soc/ so that'll never happen
>>
>>101804575
I went to AX back when InuYasha was the big thing. God damn, there were InuYasha and Kagome cosplayers everywhere including my sister.
>>
>>101804646
I don't think you'd want to meet a real /a/non, your expectations would probably disappoint you.
>>
>>101803968
Nigga stay at home, watch anime and discuss it on /a/. You wouldn't be able to discuss shit you watch on conventions, because these people seen roughly 50 series in their lifes approximately.

Or please go if you're one of them.
>>
>>101803968
I went to con 2 years ago:
>walk in, see 12 yr old kids cosplaying naruto
>I was 21 at this time and i felt old as fuck (almost everyone was ~15 yr old max)
>Decided to check popular discussion panels
>Discussion panel about LoL being the best game ever created
>Another panel, about MLP
>3rd panel, 12 yr old kids discussing "why naruto is the best anime"
>mfw
I ran from there after about 30 minutes, never again. I don't know if every con is like that, or I was just unlucky but... I dont reccomend going there.
>>

Nigga what? Not every convention is a fucking comiket or whatever.
>>
>>101804789
Any sane anon only needs to look in the mirror to know what to expect. I prefer the attitude of people on /a/ over convention-fags but if I had a choice of who to hang out with for the day it would be the convention-fags, no question.
>>
>>101804859
>mfw you have no face
>>
>>101804859
I'm surprised you hung around after the first panel.
>>
>>101804961
Every convention in my area costs to get in because they rent out spots in nice hotels to use. The Japanese festival that's held downtown every year is free, though. It's still full of weebs and furries, though.
>>
The best part of conventions is asking drunk people what their favorite Shinkai film is and which Evangelion ending they prefer.
>>
>>101804831

>"Our suuuuper secret club is so much better"

No, you won't be able to talk about that scat hentai doujin of Wake Up Girls that was released as RAW hours before but at a con you can shoot the shit about alright stuff like Dandy and recent Kill La Kill without a problem
>>
>>101804992
>I had a choice of who to hang out with for the day it would be the convention-fags

They are fake scums that wouldn't even hold hands with you.

Atleast we are true to each other.
>>
Go there, buy stuff, see if there's something that interests you on the program, if yes go there if not go home.
>>
>>101805114
>Dandy and recent Kill La Kill

You mean SAO and SNK, right? Because that 99% of fandom in my country.
>>
Your mileage will vary at cons.
There's a huge range of people there from scum to some really cool guys that share your interests.

I don't think there's much difference between SAO, SNK, and KlK fans you know. Don't know about Space Dandy, haven't been paying attention to that one, but considering it's airing with dubs I'd say it must be approximately the same.

I have gone to AX before it's fun to go and buy shit, some of the industry guests as well, but it gets kind of annoying when you get to the con and about 40% of the cosplayers are SNK or SAO and there are some loud weabs. But I will say I did meet some cool people in line and the screening and overall feel of the con was enjoyable enough but AX is the beiggest one in the US so idk about other cons.
>>
>>101804961
You don't need tickets for Comiket, shitbird.
>>
>>101805410
Honestly, how good it is is what you make of it.
If you want to be an antisocial fuck that doesn't put yourself out there and start conversations, of course it's going to be shitty.
However, if you actually try to go to interesting panels and visit good booths, you can find amazing people to talk to.
>>
>>101805665
I was referring to the quantity and quality, you fucking mongrel.
>>
>>101805515
I'm honestly quite amazed that someone can like a single show so much. Don't normalfags get bored of watching the same shit?
>>
OP: Katsucon?
>>
>>101805672
You'll look like a complete twat if you talk about shit no-one has watched.
>>
>>101804638
This. I went to a con few months ago, and 80% of people there didn't know any other anime besides sao, snk and death note. I wasn't expecting them to know every anime /a/ talks about, but holy shit, 1 or 2 people knew about steins;gate or code geass , and nobody heard about haruhi. I suppose cons are just a bunch of normalfags trying to act like they are "soooo nerrrdyy xDXD le reddit face" Sad, really.
>>
>>101805797
>nobody heard about haruhi
I don't believe you. That shit was huge at cons a few years ago.
>>
>>101805776
That's why you go to panels and booths related to the shit you want to talk about.
You don't just go up to people like an autist and yell "YOU LIKE KAIBA?"
>>
>>101805733

>Cosplayers
>Love the show

SNK is the show of the moment and so the normal fags gravitate towards it

You want to know where the guys who |really| love a show are? In the basement waiting an hour+ getting their badge signed by their favorite VA of which I'm guilty

Having cosplayed before its more about an ego boost and flying your anime geek flag high than raw love of a show
>>
>>101805776
Agreed. After being on /a/ for few years, I can't just talk about 2 or 3 shows that every normalfag watches, and they literally know max 20 animes, so yeah.

I can certainly attest to this. Most of the cosplays I and other people I know have done was really for attention or an attempt to jump-start a conversation through having a photo taken.
Though I cosplay Vincent Brooks pruely because I love the character and the game

Been to about ten or so cons.
In my opinion if it's not a huge one (AX, Otakon) don't bother.
I think they're pretty fun, but man 90% of the people at cons are insufferable.
>>
>>101804638
This. I've been to a few cons, only a handful of cosplays from quality anime.

Even with some of those, when you talk to them, they know next to nothing about the show, they just thought the character design looked cool.

The rest are from naruto tier shit or vidya games. Panels are full of retards spouting le ebin net maymays.
>>
>>101803968
The /cgl/ is as much a fucking horrible train wreck IRL as they are online.

The squeeling, glomping, land whales in skimpy clothes, can't walk in heels, tragic acne, no concept of personal space or privacy.

There will always be a large portion of people who think their online interactions, behavior, drama, and attention whoring belong in the real world.

I used to work around SJ and went to Fanime on my lunch break just sat outside and watched the tragedy that is 4chan in the flesh.

Also expect the majority to be weebs with a religious like obsession of whatever anime is hot at the time, but not be aware of anything else.
>>
>>101803968

Honestly, they're not that bad. The horror stories you hear are few and far between, and while there are a lot of /cgl/ and normalfags, if it's a good convention, you're able to have a good time. You can pick up some cool stuff you likely won't find on the english language internet, and people are generally friendly and helpful. Being in a place where you don't have to worry about hiding your powerlevel has the strange effect of making you happy.
>>
>>101806916
>hot at the time

Oh I wish, but they just keep reliving shits that been hot few years back and most of /a/ want to forget about.
>>
>>101807017
This.
As long as you go to a good con and not some backwoods shit in the middle of nowhere, chances are you'll have fun.
>>
>>101804789

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I met up with some /a/nons before Madoka and we went to see it together. They were actually pretty chill guys. We had enough fun that we met up again to go see 3.33 at the same theatre a month later.
>>
>>101803968
I went to a small, regional one yesterday. It was pretty fun even with all the narutards and fat cosplayers. You can get older anime and manga cheaply and meet some decent people if you try to. And if you like playing fighting games against smelly faggots you don't even know or singing Detroid Metal City karaoke for hours, small conventions are great.
>>
>>101807017
It really depends.
You can find a really good con, meet cool people and have fun without hiding your powerlever
or
Have bad luck and go to a con full of normalfags and kids cosplaying naruto.
It's 50/50 anon, take the risk if you think it's worth it.
it's not
>>

This. I went to a con with some friends and he didn't bring it, but after seeing how many people had them, he brought it to the local Comiccon we went to a month or two later. He got over 100 in the couple of hours we were there.
>>
>>101807054
Yeah well to be specific I figure expect to see 20 or 30 ppl from SNK this year. A smaller cluster of people from past mainstream anime but still a fair percentage, some people who threw a costume together in 15min and is really obnoxious about it. A few so called "pros" almost always in an obscure revealing one off outfit of a popular character...they cake on make-up, would be a 5/10 outside of the con, and can't walk in heels. Then you get a few people who have really crazy outfits with just absurd detail to a minor character....typically they get ignored because they aren't showing T&A. Then you'll get the friends of weebs too lazy to put anything real together, but down to be as obnoxious and immature as possible.

That's how I would break down cosplay at an American con.

There's literally no reason to go to any con, ever:
-Nobody there knows any shows except the top 20 most popular shounen shows of the last decade
-The merchandise is all incredibly overpriced, you can buy anything they sell much cheaper from Japanese vendors, especially manga
-The girls are either ugly, landwhales, or trying to advertise/sell you junk
-The ugly girls think they're attractive and will often be wearing the least clothing
-Bronies and video game nerds who don't watch anime will attend just for the hell of it
-Half the people there are teenagers and kids
-Occasional /fit/-type Zyzz wannabees that dress up as half-naked characters to solicit attention from female landwhales

Regarding prices, it depends on when you go there.
Last day prices are usually cheaper ore easier to bargain. I remember seeing figmas selling for $10 and 2hu figs selling for $25, which are way less than what is usually sold in stores.

Used to go to anime expo, had a blast every time. A bro and I would always do Karaoke, wound up winning some prizes in the competition.

However, to echo what everyone else says: worthless without friends to go with. Sure you'll meet people, but that is easier when you're in a group.

Stopped going because no time, and we've all lost fervor for anime. Now we just watch space brothers and read manga.

>So ehm, would it be wrong to just hang out at a convention in plain clothes talking to random people? I wouldn't care much for cosplaying I'd just like to meet people.
That's one of the better ways to go about it. Wearing a costume doesn't actually do anything to help start a conversation and meet people. I found myself talking to people I was "stuck with". I don't mean that in a negative sense; I was in line for a autograph from the creator of the JoJo ASB game, and while in line I met this couple who were real big fans. We got to talking and they really knew their stuff (sometimes even more than me). I was in my Vinncent Brooks cosplay which doesn't really look like an actually "costume"

So yes, wear normal clothing and try to engage with some sort of activity like waiting in line for a game or to meet someone and the conversation will come to you.

Let's see.. officially, 1994 was the first ever Otakon, but sometimes the staff refers to a mythological "Otakon 1993" (which was four guys in a car driving back from Chicibcon, saying, "We can do better than this). I think there exists a 1993 Otakon T-Shirt from back then, which has stick figures drawn drawn on a white T-shirt in Sharpie marker.

Otakon 1995 was almost the last Otakon. The Korp spent a ton of money on nice things like full-color offset-printed flyers that bloated the budget. At the same time, it was held at the Penn State convention center -- out in Central Pennsylvania -- so it had fuck-all attendees. Also, one of the guests was ero-artist Teruo Kakuta, so the staff shirt had a Bondage Fairy on the back. Several of the founders and staff had to pitch in their personal funds to make 1996 happen.

You know the Otakon Mascot, Hiroko-chan? There's a scene from the classic otaku mockumentray Otaku-no-Video that was the source of her name -- it's the one where the perverted guy is watching H-videos. Listen for the line "Isn't Hiroko-chan pretty? Isn't she pretty?" Anyway, we show it pretty much every year -- there's a legend that says Disaster Shall Befall the Con if we ever omit it from the video schedule.

I think one year something bad actually did happen when we skipped it, but damn if I can remember what it was. Maybe it was the year the sewers under the convention center caught on fire and exploded, sending manhole covers flying?

Anyway, if I can be bothered to post more, maybe I'll tell the story of "Grandma sees this, Grandma Dies", or maybe "Otakon vs. the Mob".

Yeah, kind of shit happened at Otakon back in the 90's I think. Some convention-goers decided to trash the Sheraton, they did stuff like piling furniture into the elevators and setting off fire extinguishers in the halls.

Got the con black-balled from doing business with the Sheraton for like a decade -- that's why for a long time there was never a con block at the hotel (due to the incident, the Sheraton's corporate database had a big Fuck-Otakon flag set in their records).

Ever since that time, we've done our best to help the police track down vandals. Some of the ones who've gotten caught have ended up screwed pretty hard, too.

Here's another little short one.

>GF goes to convention and is with a friend.
>Now not to go into too much detail she a short, little girl and usually wears lolita stuff. I'd say she's "vulnerable" in a way.
>She's hanging outside the convention with her friend, just sitting down and talking
>Out of nowhere this guy dressed up as Slenderman grabs her from behind and begins to drag her away, her friend doesn't know what to do so she just awkwardly sits there.
>GF is terrified as she is easily startled.
>Get lets her go, shes beginning to cry she said
>Guy says he was just in character
>Apparently later in that same day the same guy did the same thing to a bunch of other girls, most of which were small girls like her.
>Nobody seemed to care, nor did this guy understand what he was doing was inappropriate.

It's generally not worth interacting with any part of the greater anime fandom. All you'll get is normalfag casuals and awkward sperglords.
The only cool and knowledgeable people I've encountered who like anime were the /a/nons I met at the Madoka movie showings. It was pretty great being able to have long conversations about things like VNs and buyfaging with people you've just met.

Now the SPJA organization that runs Anime Expo -- their corporate structure is a perpetual shitstorm.

Back in 2004 or so, they actually kicked out the their founder (Mike Tatsugawa, decent guy), and since then they've had financial scandals, loyalty purges, etc.

If your con ever does any business with them, make sure the lawyers look over everything carefully.

Checked out Sakura-Con last year and it was pretty fucking lame. Apparently it was a really bad year according to a lot of the regulars I talked to so I'mma give it another shot when it comes around in the next couple months. The guest lost looks a lot better than last year's.

Highlights included:
-The cringiest swinsuit contest ever.
-A panel on body modification, complete with explicit images of surgical procedures.
-This one 12- or 13-year-old Raoul Duke cosplayer. I have no idea what he was doing at an anime convention but he never broke character and it made my day.
-Picking out inaccuracies with all the Hetalia cosplayers.

Pretty much all of it is on Youtube but what you don't see is that it was delayed for almost 40 minutes due to sound issues and the issues continued into to contest itself in the form of excessive mic feedback. We continuously yelled at the organizers to turn down the goddamn gain but they refused to do anything about it. Me and a couple other guys were off to the right, right next to one of the speakers so we got an earful every time it acted up.

They're fun if you can throw up a casualfag (or normalfag) facade and ignore people you don't like. Theres some pretty bro people at cons of any type but at the same time you also open yourself up to the worst of the worst because this is where they have a tendency to gather and are allowed to act any way they want.

The bulk of the people there are going to be the people who've watched the Big 3 + DBZ, stuff recently dubbed by Funi, stuffed aired on Toonami/Adult Swim, and entry level harem shit. Don't expect anyone to know any of the shows you like if they're the least bit "obscure" or currently airing. If you're discussing anything with anyone is likely going to be a show 2 years old and licensed.

Typically you're going to go for two reasons, to buy merch, or to have fun. If being around people pisses you off then leave because forcing yourself to be there is a shitty idea. If they don't have anything you want or like then leave. I've been to a couple I've liked but there have also been ones I just straight up walked out of after about 15 minutes.

Speaking as someone who went to the MCM October Convention down in London, it can be a very mixed bag, depending entirely on your autism/views on anime/people with autism/shit being too expensive.

That being said I did enjoy it as it wasn't just limited to anime&manga (went to try out Hitman absolution/get a signing from one of the walking dead TV actor's);

That being said here's the main things I enjoyed/hated.
1) People cosplays: Being a large convention, I saw a variety of 'oh my fucking god that looks awesome' to 'naruto cosplay 55'. I shit you not besides naruto cosplayers/furrys (ill get to those fuckers later on), majority of the people I see cosplaying from a single show are people wearing pikachu costumes. The same FUCKING costume. Its not hard to have variety but holy shit I saw 20+ people in a single day wearing the SAME FUCKING PIKACHU COSPLAY COSTUME.

2) Overpriced shit: If your a big fan your likely not to care about specific stuff but majority of the shit you can get at the convention is frankly a ripoff. Even the food being at a expo was overpriced (if I recall it costed £2.5+ for a can of coke inside the building where if you walked for 20 minutes you could get a can for less than a quid. Granted shits usually reduced in price on the final day and I got good bargains of some asian films but I ain't spending £300 on a bleach plastic sword I can make myself.

3) Autism: This can be people not knowing how to communicate/socialise effectively or furrys getting banned for a day/prevented from wearing their fursuits because a silly furry yiff's in the main queue of the building. While most fans you can interact with are a 'bit' eccentric, a few can become fullblown autism piles of shit that do nothing but negatively affect your day at the convention.

>God damn it, Otakon sounds like it's being held together by duct tape and disbelief.

Haha, sorry if I make it sound that way, but the top echelons of the management are actually really competent and decent people (some of them are pretty funny, too). There's a reason why the Otakon convention has grown and stayed operational as long as it has, while other cons have stayed small, or turned into factional snakepits, or ended up broken on the rocks.

When a fan-run organization gets this big, you get some pretty severe centrifugal forces on the inside, as well as predatory players lurking on the outskirts, looking to take advantage of the resources the con has pulled together. Managing all that is pretty difficult stuff.
>>
Biggest advice to anyone
Don't buy the food
It's expensive as all hell and can possibly take up almost half of your budget when going there
It's shit, this should be self explainitory but it is not quality stuff, it's usually bulk bought shit used to pander to weeaboos, if you want to try it try it somewhere else for the other two reasons
I wouldn't put it by the reptilian powers that they'd put chemicals in it to sterilize anyone eating it and admit it, you would too
>>
>>101814386
>if I recall it costed £2.5+ for a can of coke inside the building.

4) Conventions getting Casual: With people attending these conventions getting more and more casual (only thing the fuckers like to talk about is naruto/pewdiepie). Stalls at the expo knowing catering to the casual audience catered in EPIC MEEM SHIRT stalls knowing their shit would sell. I saw around 4-5 that exclusively focused on shitty MEME/Anime 3 shit that catered to people.

5) How you interact with people/how people interact with you: If your a cosplayer and you do a good cosplay its nice to be friendly and accept it when people want to take photo's of you. Its what you would do when you see someone cosplaying well (pic related, two women cosplaying well as panty&stocking). But theres a fine line between friendly and rude and what with people having autism that shit can get crossed easily. This rule may apply more to others than some (sorry gal's but if you do a good cosplay chances are your gonna need security to deal with that one fat fuck who keeps harassing you) but be aware of what you may face and plan accordingly. I kept to myself and apart from being in conversation with some asian chick cosplaying as madoka (who had serious boyfriend in prison issues) while we queued+waited for our friends the only time I conversed with other people apart from friends was to get a good photo.

6) How many times you go: First time you go to a convention? Your gonna be overjoyed and giddy the entire time. But the more times you go the more likely it is that the good things fade and the bad things are more likely to be a issue with you. If its overpriced crap/shitty cosplayers/the general autism you see all affect how you approach conventions. I only went to a major convention (MCM) and although I have no qualms about going again, that sort of shit is something I dont wana do on a regular basis.

That's about it for me and what conventions were like for a England anon like me.

If your smart and look up nearby places to eat/drink outside the convention your guaranteed to find somewhere to eat/drink cheaper than the convention. Apart from eating some japanese deep fried food once with a friend I ate food elsewhere and it being london its not hard to take the local underground to somewhere else to eat. Sure you might get weird looks if your cosplaying but better that than wasting money on overpriced shit.

To the anon complaining about subway: Theirs a subway outside Stratford Station if you go up then down the stairs. Since its only a couple of minutes away by DLR you wont waste too much time getting something to eat& you have westfield mall nearby if you want to eat something else.

I've gone to Otakuthon, and had fun, but I also tried going to Montreal Comiccon, and I've got to say: It's not great in comparison. Otakuthon is much more fan driven and has a lot more entertaining and engaging things going on, whereas MCC (and really, all Comiccons) is much more commercially oriented. It's not as fun, and the median age goes up another 20 years. It's the one where you'll see the parents bringing their children in costumes, which is cringier than almost any landwhale.

And while I've had good times all around, even at Comiccon, let's not forget the dark side. /cgl/ has the corner on these stories, man.

They're alright, but generally better when you're younger and less jaded. The people you go with really do make it, as they are the only people you'll really talk with there. Really pretty much everything there is a mixed bag. Some VA's like Seitz and Jewel are total bros and really worth talking to. The panels range from shit to great. The dealer's room is generally a ripoff but you can get some good deals if you're informed. Its worth going to a few. I just did my first panel at Ohayocon and aside from them cutting our time by accident it went better than expected.
>>
Went to Nekocon '13 for the first time ever. Cosplayed as Jintan from Ano Hana (pulled it off surprisingly well). I had 2 people at the entire con recognize me. Everyone else was cosplaying as characters from Naruto, Attack on Titan, and Homestuck.

Anyone that goes to a meeting IRL with weeaboo shit is cancer. Whats the point? You want to be social? You're a normalfag who got into anime. Cancer killing the industry with uglyass fat cosplayers and shit. And from what I've been hearing recently, most of the people goin to cons don't even do anime cosplay, they just do shitty MLP and other western cartoon cosplay. However thats to be expected of shittards. I sincerely hope you guys don't go to cons.

(Rin and Cecilia are shits.) And it's good to see that you've finally understood the true trifecta of best girls. You are then free to have your own harem of the three girls. Houki always wishing she could have you to herself and Charlotte and Laura perfectly happy sharing you because they're best friends. Plus Houki on her own is better than Cecilia and Rin. So it all works out in the end. You get three best girls. Instead of two.

>>
Went to Youmacon in Detroit in October, because I knew some people going to it, and my parent's house is 15 minutes away from Downtown. Yes, it was full of casuals and normalfags, but there was some cool cosplays that I took pictures off, bought some merchandise and attended a few panels. And I actually stood out because I WASN'T cosplaying. In the end, not really worth the full ticket price though.

Later, when my friends went to go to SAO and SNK panels, I decided to check out the game room instead. Full of tourneyfags, but I signed up for SSBM because it's the only game there I knew how to play. First round, I lost 1-2 against some autist who didn't even shake my hand after the match. I later found out it was Mew2King.

It was an interesting day, but I don't think I'd do it more than once a year, if even that much.

Went to Otakon last year and had a fucking blast. Was cosplaying as Naked Snake complete with cardboard box. For the rave I ducktaped a bunch of glow sticks on the cardboard box and transformed it into The Rave Box. I fucking jumped in the middle of the dance and started freaking out in the box and a huge circle formed around me. Just as the music died out I fell and landed really hard on my head. I then lost 20 minutes of time and it turned out I had a concussion. Best con ever

Oh-ho no.
I posted earlier about seeing a body mod panel at Sakura-Con. That panel was run by a regular con-goer. In fact, about half of the panels were done by regular people.

You can pretty much do whatever you want so long as the planning committee approves it. All you have to do is enter a form before a certain date.

Yeah, that shirt exists. Eric made it to wear to Otakon 1995. The stick figure picture is of people in a car saying "We can do better."

Actually, being social and anime has had a long history.
When anime tapes were 20$ for 2 episodes with dubs, or 30$ with subs, you had to have friends, or a lot of money.

As someone who has been going to local conventions for almost a decade, let me give you my two cents, OP. First of all, I am extremely shy and anti-social, and I have both gone to cons alone and with large groups in the past. Personally, I prefer going alone, because it allows me to follow my own schedule. When in groups, I find people always want to drag you to their bullshit panels and other useless crap. Having seen pretty much everything conventions have to offer, the only reasons I see for going to them now is to shop the market (If you're as good as me, you can find rare deals or awesome decor for your room or whatever), and maybe scope out some rare cosplays or high powerlevel friends.

Most of the people in this thread have already warned you about the negatives you're guaranteed to encounter at a con, but just be mentally prepared for anything. Some of these filth have absolutely no filter or shame what-so-ever.
>>
>>101823051
>When in groups, I find people always want to drag you to their bullshit panels and other useless crap.
That's stupid, when you go to a con you go there to meet other people and meet up with friends from other parts of the country (if you have any), not to sit in your own shit you can see anytime anyway.
>>
>>101823051
>Some of these filth have absolutely no filter or shame what-so-ever.
To me, that's half the fun.
It's a modern-day freakshow.

Since people are talking about /a/ meetups, maybe you can at least tell me a little bit more about the history of the 4chan Otakon panel. I wasn't paying much attention at the time it happened, so don't know much about it.

I know that some asshat assaulted a furry at the panel, and that some miscellaneous vandalism occurred. The result being no future 4chan panels, due to potential insurance problems and liability headaches.

Heard someone put up an Awesome-face banner on the roof (which cost us money to get removed but was still kinda awesome). Bagpiper playing at the con, other stuff like that.

Oh, I do find it entertaining, but it can catch you off-guard really easily. One time I was cosplaying a male Vocaloid and some random hambeast came up to me and started talking about how she had yaoi doujins of my character. She probably wanted the D, but I had no idea how to react at the time. I think I literally just stared at her without saying anything until she went away.

Another thing I forgot to mention is be ready for the MASSIVE AMOUNTS of NOT anime at anime conventions. I can let video-games slide for the most part, because many of them are developed in Japan anyway, but actual anime probably only accounts for about 40% of the shit you will encounter at a modern "anime" convention.

I didn't have all that much fun. A lot of the people are kind of obnoxious, which is understandable considering it's a convention and you can barely hear a guy not a foot away from you, but it's still kind of grating. Not as many unwashed neckbeards as one would think, still far more than you would want. It's hot, crowded, and loud.

Maybe my personality just doesn't mesh well with the general atmosphere of an anime convention. Almost everyone there was overeager to show off their shipping charts and it was sort of difficult to hold conversations with people.

4/10 experience, I'd rather sit at home and argue with /a/.

but I would say that the cons themselves aren't that good and over the years London's Excel MCM/comiccon has been gradually getting worse time after time
I've usually enjoyed myself most either outside the con chilling or at the pubs after the cons oh and especially the childish spin the bottle games which usually end you up in someone elses hotel room

con's can be super fun but they can also be superbad your best bet is to go on the cons facebook page and find a hotel room to share with people if you're going on your own

went to a con about 3 weeks ago that you could just stroll right into and fuck around, but badges were required for the pool deck, dealers room, etc.
the front entrance patio was one of the free areas and was littered with homestucks and freeload pervert photographers (not that you would care).
it was fun, i got a lot of pictures and met a few popular artists. shitty awful weeaboos are very, very uncommon. try to even out the things you do, people that hang out in one area with one group of people are the ones that call conventions shitty

I cosplay as Kamijou Kyousuke as an excuse to play anime songs on violin out in public. It's kind of fun to see people react to songs they recognize.
Mamis and Sayakas seem to immediately recognize Credens Justitiam and Decretum, but Homuras don't recognize Inevitabilis.

When I went to get someone a Tiffany Grant autograph, the dub voice actors there asked me to play a song, so I played Cruel Angel's Thesis. It was kind of a cool moment.

I've solved this thanks to a mixture of social discomfort and army drill. Lean in with your hands behind your back, one holding the other.

No creep feeling from touching girlskin, no awkward feeling from hoverhand. All's right in the universe.
>>
>>101824289

Let me put it this way. Back in the late 80's / early 90's, if mainstream people knew about "Japanimation" at all, the reaction was sometimes "Hey, Astroboy!", but usually a blank stare.

It was also often "Eww... you like tentacles!?" Apparently, the commercial success of exploitative hentai had led it to be heavily promoted, and it gained some cache in certain arts/hipster circles.

Getting outed as an Otaku was potentially bad when that happened, so in that sense Furries were kind of like allies, and there was a fair bit of crossover in the fandom. Some of the oldest of the oldfags I know are secretly furry.
