What the fuck is Mary Sue?

Generic girl with no personality? Self insert? Best girl where everyone automatically like? Deus ex machina that can make anything happen in the story?

Wikipedia seems to conform to the second meaning but I have seen all kind of use on /a/. So, really, what the fuck is it? Is wiki wrong or /a/ don't know what the fuck they are talking about?

/a/ usually use the word Gary Stu more than the female variant though

Mary Sue is suppose to be a fanfiction term.

It means a character who shares characteristics with the author and is liked in-universe by everyone for no reason. A representation of the author's bloated ego or wish fulfillment.

This, though it's also gained popularity (for good reason) as a term for characters in any work who are unreasonably perfect, don't make mistakes, or are liked by everyone in universe for little to no reason.

A mary sue is a character who can do no wrong. Even when she does something 'wrong' this will somehow be twisted in a way to make the character more endearing to the reader or she will somehow come out smelling of roses in every situation.

It's a bulletproof character, a character that even after being violent, having an outburst or doing something ridiculous will somehow be in the 'right' or will seem more cute/cool/likeable as a result.
