How about we have a wander into this series for a while? To my surprise, I heard there was more to come very soon.
I watched the special yesterday, it was pretty great. Mushishi is my favourite Anime, I'm pretty excited for the second series.
I prefer the dub
I still don't get the first episode.
It's a great show. There are many good things to say about it, but since this is a general thread basically, I'll just say one. Some of the individual stories have the potential to sink in to the try-hard status because of how bleak some of the situations are. But they're handled nicely. Take for example the special that was released. The sun being blotted out by darkness is on some nightmare level type shit. However, there's all the atmosphere one wants without the tone of the episode going into hopeless despair. It's a really nice balance.
I think the worst bit about the situations is that a lot of the horror of them isn't immediately obvious. It's only after the episode ends and you let it sink in that you realise how dark some of the stories are.
I just hope S2 is as good as S1 is.
Yes. In a few instances I even noticed this during the episode. When the village and Ginko start chasing the light on a distant hill, and the villagers see the sun again after so long because the mushi is chasing the cart, it's like a very tight grip is eased on the viewer. Because of how the bleakness was handled, you empathize with the villagers and realize how beautiful the sun is and how much it's taken for granted. The sun's flare in the shot where it comes out from the edges of the mushi was done beautifully, and you realize just how much you missed it as the villagers did.
Supernatural anime are the best anime.
Will it be 1-cour or 2-cour?
Can't wait for season two, god tier show. I dropped it once before man i was a fool, I loved with when I watched it slowly, for me it wasn't a show you could just marathon.
Split cours. It's airing spring and fall this year.
Mushishi flawlessly displays the excitement of having HPPD in all its glory.
It's pretty awesome unless you're a little bitch about it, and Ginko clearly knows how to handle his shit
I'm pretty pumped. The second half of the manga's really good. It also looks like they're setting up a reason to have Ginko visit Tanyuu again, so hopefully we'll get an anime original episode at the end written by the author.
I am ready for S2.
Hopefully it won't be Moyashimon Returns.
So, the manga isn't ongoing?
It ended in 2008
Nope. The anime covered pretty much exactly half of it, changing the order of the stories here and there. S2 should finish it up.
Then why would the anime benefit from an original ending? Couldn't it just use the manga end?
Manga had an open ending. Ginko solves a case and just wanders off to the next one.
How is that a bad ending?
This is good. As much I love this series, I think having it go on and on would mitigate the quality of what we have so far.
You don't think an open ending works for this kind of story. Granted, I haven't read the manga so I can't speak on the quality of the ending, but open endings can work really well when done right. For shows like this that are episodic and don't have an overarching plot, open endings tend to be the best way to go.
Did I say it was bad?
I'm fine with an open ending, I just think it could end on a stronger point. Tanyuu's involved with the last chapter in the manga, but she doesn't meet with Ginko during it. The anime could just go a little bit further and have it end with Ginko reaching Tanyuu's house with the stone.
OK, I see your point now. I've heard say that the special wasn't part of the manga. Is that true? If it is then it could be that they're setting up a somewhat better resolved ending.
The special was adapted from two special chapters published last year
The special wasn't in the manga proper, that's why I'm seeing the whole 'mushi stone that rejuvenates the body' as a possible overarching plot hook for S2. Have him go through the second part of the manga not for no reason, but on the way to give the stone to Tanyuu.
Will Ally Kerr be doing the OP again? I'm not sure anything will be as perfect for Mushi-shi as The Sore Feet Song was.
Great series, I'm really looking forward to S2.
There's a World could be a good OP for S2.
Anime worth it if I've read the manga?
Yes. It's one of those rare instances where the anime only enhances the original.
