Don't you fucking dare bullshit with me /a/.
Let's fucking settle this.
Honestly, Godrobe is growing on me, I feel like I have less and less reason to prefer Kamui
DONT QUESTION DAIZ
Is that how you feel about punctuation too?
I just think Kamui sounds cooler really.
Watch out for Taneli Daiz Vatanen

His ultimate goal is to kill anime.
However, you can stop him. Spread this list!
Didn't mean to have the poll quoted.
never bump a thread you cancerous piece of shit
That's getting really annoying.
Daiz pls go.
I'm not waiting till Friday night to watch a new episode. Fuck that.
Well if you "translate' properly and stop trying to kill the industry then it won't be posted
Why would you wait til friday? I'm pretty sure CR and in turn HS are the only ones that got moved back. The Raws still come out thursday and the sub groups still jump on that shit that day(for the most part)
what's the huge deal? even if you watch Underwater you still hear VAs saying Kamui and Gokuseifuku
That's my point. I'm not waiting for CR/HS.
Why were they pushed back to friday?
Fuck that pole, this one is far more important
>Leaving Satsuki's ass out of the poll.
Wise choice anon.
It's a throwback to this poll
I personally feel Satsuki has better boobs and Ryuuko has the better ass, its smaller but tighter
I don't care about goku/ultimate, but "godrobe" just sounds silly.
While I do think the translation choices could be better, leaving things untranslated is worse.
>Translating tsundere as hot 'n' cold
>Translating -san as mister
>Translating onii-chan as brother
Some words are better off left in Japanese when they produce stiff translations
Some neckbeards are best shaved when they produce unnecessary bitching about translations.
I do feel that the difference is that the terms you brought up have meaning to us, while simple Goku Uniforms and Kamui don't.
And I don't know where that "simple" came from...
im on episode 4 right now.
this got be the most over the top series i ever watched.
I think it's because a few episodes were leaked early online, so now they only give the episodes to CR and the like after the tv airing, they used to have them in advance, and either their translators are slow or there's some kind of schedule conflict, so they've been slower than the fansubs recently. Same with Chuunibyou, I think.
Keep fucking going. It gets much more coherent.
>Leaving Ryuko's boobs out of the poll.
Wise choice anon.
At least Ultima sounds pretty cool. But a noun is a noun. You can't change it. Do you even language?
>But a noun is a noun. You can't change it.
So we should leave all nouns untranslated? Sugoi hanashi, aniki.
But "goku uniform" is translating half the word, missing out on the pun, and having nearly all the google image results be of orange and blue DBZ outfits.
gokusei(highest quality) fuku(clothes)
How does Ultima preserve that pun?
nobody said it does
Complaining about the half translation destroying the pun is kind of stupid when the full translation doesn't preserve it either.
It doesn't, but it still has wordplay in the form of alliteration at least.
Goku uniform on the other hand has absolutely nothing going for it. It's awful no matter how you look at it.
Even professional translators localize less than fan translators now. How the fuck did this happen?
I like goku uniform a hell of a lot more than ultima.
>/a/ full of weebs
You disappoint me.
Professional means nothing other than "they get paid for doing their job". Look at Nourins translation, for example.
I don't mine ultima uniform but godrobe sound stupid, sounds a little grandiose for a sailor uniform regardless of how strong it's supposed to be
If you fagets hate the translations so much yet apparently understand the language why don't you sub it yourself?
>sounds a little grandiose for a sailor uniform regardless of how strong it's supposed to be
So, just like 神衣?
I actually extract the Underwater subs and replace Godrobe with Kamui just to spite their strange translations.
Godrobe is probably the worst possible translation of the word. Kami are spirits, and clothes are not robes (why a robe of all things, they look nothing like a robe). Spiritdress would've been much better. But leaving it as Kamui is best.
Am I the only one that really doesn't give a shit? I mean I know what they're talking about regardless of what filler word they use.
Spiritdress of superior bleeding+1
>No Kamui/Ultima option
I couldn't care less, I don't mute my audio.
Because jokes are only funny if you don't have to have them explained, no translation can capture the amount of puns and homophones this language has, and most important: only attention whoring faggots think the attention they get from lazy plebs for their shitty translations that miss all of the above is worth the effort it took to learn the language in the first place.
This would be my reasoning for picking Kamui as well and as I am writing my thesis on TV subtitling right now, I happen to be an expert on this subject.
Godrobe is fucking retarded. I cringe every time I read it.
>There are people that are actually voting for godrobe and ultima.
>writing my thesis on TV subtitling right now
>saying that you should just leave shit untranslated
One "expert" you are.
I like kamui and ultima
Yeah, they should translate names as well, because there are no people called Ryuko Matoi and Satsuki Kiryuin where I come from!
Thank god there are people with other opinions than yourself. Kamui should definitely not be translated.
I think this counts as a proper noun and therefore shouldn't really be translated. Also, how would you define the proper translation name?
That's another thing that pisses me off: changing the order of names.
Kami is a more complicated word than just spirit. At times it's clearly indicative of the western notion of a minor god and at other times just means 'the idea of something worth of respect'. Spirit works as a intermediary between the two, but we have far more specific terms that fit much better in this specific case.
But counter to that, it's a made up term relying heavily on wordplay not available in the target language and I agree that it should be left as is.
>Because jokes are only funny if you don't have to have them explained
I'd still rather have it explained than having it left out or worse changed.
If there's this much discussion and disagreement over what the words translate to, they should just fucking leave it as the original word.
>writing my thesis on TV subtitling right now
that cracked me up more than it should have
God forbid we will have two different types of translation.
>Translating personal nouns
What's the fucking point? That's one of the reasons why I don't like the DBZ english dub, they have to translate or change every attack. Some are fine like Spirit Bomb since it's a literal translation. But shit like Special Beam Cannon and Tri-Beam is stupid
only stupid really think this is some huge problem. Just ignore it and move on.
Sorry I didn't mean to reply to you.
I agree with you on not translating personal nouns.
>liking any version of DBZ
>Kamui should definitely not be translated.
Should senmeisen'i also definitely not be translated? If not, why? It's just as much of a made up term as kamui is.
>I think this counts as a proper noun
Wrong, there are multiple kamuis, so it's a (made-up) common noun.
>But counter to that, it's a made up term relying heavily on wordplay not available in the target language and I agree that it should be left as is.
So you'd rather get no meaning out of the word whatsoever than get at least some meaning via a translation?
Goku is equally as retarded as Godrobe, so they're both shit.
Kamui/Ultimate Uniform or bust.
You hating on DBZ bro?
>So you'd rather get no meaning out of the word whatsoever than get at least some meaning via a translation?
Context gives meaning to the word.
Daiz why does Episode 13 lock up around 7:50
You might know what it's referring to but you'd be completely missing out on the etymology - whereas a Japanese viewer wouldn't because they could read the kanji. Translating it allows you to get an experience more similar to that of a Japanese viewer.
it kept growing and growing
Is it the newspaper?
Then that is your opinion and I respect you for sharing it.
Does 'kamui' sound as stupid to a Japanese viewer as 'Godrobe' does to us?
Stop using VLC.
If you're not using VLC, make sure you're using xy-vsfilter or xysubfilter.
If you're using mpv, then you'll have to deal with it for now. Libass will probably get better at dealing with gradients eventually, but we might batch the show first and make the sign more lightweight before that.
Th-thanks, you t-too.
"Ultima" sounds like something a middle schooler would use in a fanfic because they think it sounds cool.
>not having the full version
Isn't there some shitty group out there using "Super suits"?
>Kamui / Goku
>502 votes (72%)
That people would ever vote for "goku uniform" sickens me.
It's not even the word with the emphasis of what they are actually saying.
"Goku uniform" sounds like something a middle schooler would use in their EPIC DBZ CROSSOVER FANFIC because Goku is super-cool!
And the fact that anyone would prefer "ultima uniform" makes me cringe internally.
I think it's more the lack of a better alternative.
That people would ever vote for Godrobe sickens me.
But goku means ultimate and is pretty chuu-ni word in japanese so its okay
Who remembers this day?
>Arigatou means Baka
To be fair Goku was pretty cool.
>no option for Jersey Devil / Super Suits
Goku outweighted godrobe.
shit vs. below shit.
>"Ultima Uniform" is cringeworthy
>"Goku Uniform" makes no sense as a translation
Is there a way to translate it that isn't garbage?
Even if you're reading a translation by a master in both Japanese and English, you're already missing more than you could ever know, regardless of translation notes.
It's almost a waste to watch or read anything character driven and full of jokes that rely on the language itself when the only thing that makes it through translation unscathed is the overall narrative, sight gags, and the bits of symbolism that don't require an in depth knowledge of japanese semiotics, literature, and culture.
Except they're actually saying gokuseifuku, you dumb nigger.
I am not saying ultima uniform is good, but it's certainly better than fucking goku uniform.
Goku uniform is truly the worst thing they could have "translated" it as.
They should have just written gokuseifuku in romaji if they didn't want to try to translate it to begin with.
Goku uniform really is the bottom of the bottom. It doesn't even try to get it right, yet it gets it plain wrong.
If they are saying gokuseifuku, why did they sub it as goku uniform?
How about having the immediate and direct interpretation be the one that is translated and the other relevant interpretation(s) be written down somewhere?
No, just leave it as gokuseifuku and I can look up what it means.
Because no one who reads subs is actually listening to anything other than the general tone of speech.
Godrobe/Ultima getting BTFO.
Kamui > Godrobe
Ultima > Goku
You need to learn about compromises /a/
only kamui is acceptable
ultima sounds childish
goku is just fucking wrong entirely
godrobe sounds silly, especially the god part
its still going. http://strawpoll.me/563819/
>mfw: google does a better job than sub groups
gokuseifuku -> very uniform
This guy gets it.
Oh shit, Satsuki managed to get back to 50%
This is correct, but Ultima is still shit.
This is clearly a divisive topic.
>literally over 9000 votes
Fuck, I remember voting on this when it was still just a couple hundred
>especially the god
Why especially? God/divine-spirit actually is part of the phrase.
I thought most people had a problem with the "robe" part.
This. I'd rather have a long ass TN explaining the pun than the translator making up something else. The worse is in H-mangas where it simply doesnt make sense. You have a shota calling everyone sis and theres not even any incest, it gets confusing.
For example calling out "Hana sis" 20 times during sex just doesn't sound as good as "Hana-nee", and Hana isn't even his sister.
I just think it sounds ridiculous.
>I'd rather have a long ass TN explaining the pun than the translator making up something else
Are you serious
That poll is still shit because it was Satsuki's ass vs Ryuuko's boobs, and not Satsuki's ass vs Ryuuko's ass.
After a while most people can pick up common words. No one cares about gokuseifuckyou turning into goku uniform, but hearing onii-chan and reading "bub" is unnerving
Didn't Tattun say he was a Ryuuko supporter?
Are you niggers serious?
>For example calling out "Hana sis" 20 times during sex just doesn't sound as good as "Hana-nee"
>implying anyone (who doesn't leave untranslated honorifics in) would translate "Hana-nee" to "Hana sis" and not just "Hana", especially if they're not related
If you want to argue for untranslated honorifics, at least try to do so without making up extremely contrived and retarded examples.
>You have a shota calling everyone sis and theres not even any incest
I don't think anyone here would call these kinds of things to be good translations.
You don't translate "nee-san" or whatever into sis if it doesn't make sense. Then you failed translation 101, and translation 101 isn't direct word for word replacement.
it's not a gift from god(s), it doesn't give you godlike powers (yes you get stronger but you are still a piece of little shit compared to god)
>☑ Extreme homophobia
Is this supposed to be a bad thing?
He is and that's why he's a little bitch in my book.
I'm not making this up, I dont remeber the exact names or who did the translation but pretty much this happened and I dropped it before they even climaxed. I'm still mad
The original Japanese word is formed from the words for "god" (神) and "clothes" (衣). This is a fact unaffected by how "godlike" or not you perceive the powers of 神衣 to be.
Ryuukos ass > Satsukis ass
Satsukis boobs > Ryuukos boobs
In this case it means that the clothes ARE kami, and in general there's more than one type of god.
Fuck off Daiz
>it doesn't give you godlike powers
Godlike powers are the entire point though. That is the implication.
So you think trigger were dumb when they named them 神衣?
ok faggots i see your point, but i just cant get over how fucking silly godrobe sound
which is why im gonna stick with the only right subs for this particular animu
But it still sounds like shit.
>Not going into subrip and replacing words with find and replace so you get Underwaters superior typesetting without their shit localizations
ALRIGHT YOU GUYS IT IS TIME TO SETTLE THIS ONES AND FOR ALL
WHO IS BEST GRILL
Then you were reading a horrible translation, and arguing that you shouldn't do something because you saw a horrible translation do it badly once is frankly pretty stupid.
Let's let DEMOCRACY DECIDE
But godrobe sounds fitting. A superior version of the uniforms the students are wearing.
Just like god-tier anything is superior to humans.
Goku uniform or whatever they have it as just sounds ridiculous because of the connotation to DBZs Goku.
Decided to watch this last night after seeing all the hype, was enjoying it until she pulls out that kinky ass outfit. Now i understand the appeal but if theyre gonna play that card then it isnt for me.
DameDame has "Power Jersey", which objectively is best.
I do like Nonon when shes smug
GODROBE JUNKETSU HURRRRRRRRR
GOKU UNIFORM SENKETSU
ULTIMA UNIFORM JUNKETSU
just fucking try to translate senketsu and junketsu if you want to translate kamui so bad
mixing two languages never sounds good, especially when you mix germanic language with a fucking MOONSPEAK
I want to protect that smug.
Satsuki's ass ftw.
You don't translate names. Otherwise the character wouldn't be called "Ryuuko" in Underwater subs
gokuseifuku or bust.
Her ass isnt even her best feature
Eyebrows > tits > resolve > ass
>implying it doesn't just mean blood
nope, most people aren't into it for fanservice. Sure it's nice to look at some 2d boobs than not, but it doesn't come into plot's way too much.
Your gonna miss out like a mofo man. It's doesn't play the game you think it does.
DON'T FUCKING TRANSLATE PROPER NOUNS
JESUS CHRIST WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?
>Taking such a desperate stab at based Daiz
Even then her ass is above all others.
you shouldn't translate phrasemes leaving part of it untranslated either
in some contexts all of those would be acceptable.
>Not wanting Mako's perfect roundness.
And why is it so hard to understand that made-up common nouns are not proper nouns?
Guys, which is better:
Nonon's smug or Nonon's grump?
1000 votes, good enough for me..
captcha: Bobal Officials
It's actually very possible to translate senketsu and junketsu. And they actually did translate the meaning of the names when they spoke of them in their first episodes.
It's just that they so happen to be names.
If Senketsu and Junketsu were inanimate objects, it would have been perfectly possible to just translate it to English.
Can I just say how fucking based the music in ep 16 was? I was fucking rock hard.
right? just look at this
Just to be a dick, what is a proper noun in a language with no concept of capitalization and also taking into consideration in certain other languages every Noun is capitalized?
Kamui, in the context of the show, is obviously a Proper Noun.
Nonon has a much tighter ass and Ryuukos is better proportioned
Mako and Satsuki have the best tits
i hope it's clear that people voted for kamui, not goku
goku is even worse than godrobe, when the fuck goku has to do with all of that shit is beyond me
Daiz, you are not American, English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh or a convict, why do you think that your opinion on translating into the English language is worth anything at all?
It was definitely good.
They are different sides of the same coin
A proper noun is a distinctive name of an entity or class of entities. You can not apply a proper noun to anything other than a specific class of objects it designates.
But muh cushion...
Apart from Hi10p, there isn't anything about his actions. Daiz did almost nothing wrong.
Except that it's obviously not.
>A proper noun is a noun that in its primary application refers to a unique entity, such as London, Jupiter, Sarah, or Microsoft, as distinguished from a common noun, which usually refers to a class of entities (city, planet, person, corporation), or non-unique instances of a certain class (a city, another planet, these persons, our corporation).
There are multiple 神衣, therefore 神衣 can't be a proper noun. It's a made-up common noun.
Daiz, did you change sepuku or whatever the fuck you used in one of the last episodes?
That's every noun
>people voting Godrobe/Ultima
>Apart from Hi10p
But, that is almost the only good thing Dias has "done".
I've got a common noun for you:
Why is she so round
Senketsu is a proper noun, Junketsu is a proper noun.
Kamui is just a noun.
I meant "nothing wrong about his actions".
I am not Finnish, but as a foreigner he has probably studied far more English than native English speakers.
What is wrong with Hi10p?
A foreigner will never have the same feeling for the language as someone who learned it purely through osmosis.
>wanting half-translated garbage and names flipped around
daiz is in the right on this one
This. Understanding it and knowing the rules are two completely different things.
Is godrobe even his idea? Not just his editor?
I see where you are coming from.
In context of show it's treated as a proper noun, since it was supposed to be a single instance. Just because a second entity popped out doesn't magically make the noun change classes with a snap of the finger.
After attempting to read Tolkein in languages other than english, I came to the conclusion that if you want to enjoy something, you do it in the language it was meant to be experienced in or you're only getting the most general aspects of the story and missing even the most basic linguistic aspects..
So does Kamui actually mean anything in Japanese or is it just a made-up ass word?
I LOVE MAKO
I HATE DAIZ
VANISHMENTO DISU SUREADO
Translation itself is a subject of its own (and one that I've studied quite a bit) and there's a good number of principles that are very much universal regardless of the source and/or target language.
Also, most of the "arguments" that tend to pop up in discussions like these demonstrate a complete lack of knowledge regarding these principles.
The good old "people who disagree with me are just stupid".
Works every time, you just have to believe in it!
Then call it 'God Cloth' Or 'Divine Clothing' or something then.
'Divine Clothing Senketsu' rolls off the tongue pretty well.
is this for real?
Regardless of your "know how" or whatever Kamui sounds cooler and was unnecessary to translate. That is the bottom line.
No one is calling them stupid, they just have no idea how translation works.
Hmmm i'll give it a few more episodes to redeem itself. I've hated fan service since Highschool of the dead
I'm fine with Godrobe.
that looks kewl, at least Ryuuko doesn't have hairy legs
And? Subtitles in usual are subject to demand based on quickness, legibility, understandability and group popularity. Theoriolinguistical superiority is pretty much irrelevant.
squat-ish for screenshot
even when senketsu was first introduced it would be referred to as A kamui and not THE kamui because that's what they made. as something that was made by human hands, there was always the possibility of making more, even if there was no intention from the original creator.
What's Tumblr's fucking problem?
I don't often wish death on people, but the cunt that does this needs to get run over by a train.
KlK it's not about fanservice, keep watching it
Daiz, what is the purpose of subtitles?
The thing is:
Is Kamui part of Senketsu's title, or his name?
It isn't about fan service. Keep watching though. You'll get it.
Draw penises instead of noses
his name is just senketsu
The very basic things (stuff like "translate meaning, not words", "translation isn't 1:1 word replacement", "context is everything" etc.) apply to AV translation all the same, and that's the kind of stuff people with no clue about translation trip up with.
I've always kind of thought of it like a species name or something.
Yeah. His last name is Kamui.
read the thread
>daiz actually voted 333 times
I swear it's the same person drawing all these samey tumblr pictures of anything anime ever
I've seen Danga ronpa, Shingeki no Kyojin and now KlK all with this same style of pink bulbous noses and manfaces. Is there a mandatory tumblr art class all these goofs take
The Subs I watch are insane and use the four things alternating.
Dont mind it really.
Real shame they make the bulk of userbase then.
Why is the OST so based?
>I swear it's the same person drawing
How hard was it for you to come to that conclusion?
Is there a strawpoll comparing OPs? I need to see if anyone would actually vote for the first
Gonna be honest, Daiz, I felt tempted to vote for Kamui just because I knew you'd be pissed off if that won.
People translate JAVs now?
Nakama sounds cooler and was unnecessary to translate.
i originally found it on white background, but my eyes couldn't stand the light so i quickly selected it her and the sub with magic wand tool and placed it on a black background, which is why it's far from rad in my opinion (whitish edges)
Both OPs are pretty bland, to be honest.
The EDs are really, really bad, besides the video of the second one, the UY thing saved it.
AV translation as in audiovisual translation.
I've never seen one piece so I do not understand this reference.
Daiz, are you still here?
Since it's basically zero-cost on your part (just a couple of Find/Replaces), why not multitrack KLK with a Kamui version, as well?
Personally, I prefer your current translations, but this would get a lot of sperglords to shut up already.
When you complain about homos more than they make themselves noticed, then yes. I don't want to hear your shit either way.
you learn new things every day
I like Kamui, I don't mind godrobe or ultimate, but goku uniform is just fucking retarded
This show is not Saki, so there's no need to.
I am fucking addicted to this cue.
Watching that moment for the first time was a nearly catharsis-like feeling.
>Both OPs bad
>EDs really really bad
Wait... Can someone tell me how those scissors fit together? Every time I try it in my mind, they don't seem right.
>Nonon's smug gets into first place
All according to keikaku*
* TN's Note: keikaku means Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto
>character clearly says "hamburger"
>translate it as "Salisbury steak"
Even though I don't mind stuff like "Gia Sekando" (God, those translations are really bad, to be honest, but I don't mind them) Nakama feels so weird when added in an English sentence that it's not even funny.
Nonon is shit. I don't get it, /a/.
Are you joking here, or what?
Having a second track that untranslated one or two made-up common nouns (out of much more) would be just silly.
That's also one of the stupid things about this whole debacle - one moment people are fine with a made-up common noun being translated (like senmeisen'i), but the next it's a goddamn sacrilege that a made-up common noun was translated. There's no consistency to the complaints whatsoever.
Nonon's smug is a miracle of the universe.
WAIT HOLD ON
I just rewatched the second Sanegayama fight and that's not the track that plays like I thought, during THAT scene when he walks slowly towards Ryuuko!
When the fuck does it play? I can't believe that I first heard it when listening to the soundtrack alone.
yeah, they kind of always fuck up the edges and directions on it.
Nevermind, I got it, it was during the Gamagoori fight.
A bit less impressive when I rewatched it now for some reason.
>character clearly says "handy"
>translate it as "cellphone"
>character clearly says "Österreich"
>translate it as "Austria"
>There's no consistency to the complaints whatsoever.
Ah, I see. So instead of one alternate track, there would be, like, a dozen, each with one or two words' difference. That's especially silly.
>character says 'Let's skinny dipping'
Because you can't actually translate made-up words. You've just made up your own word that means something similar, and translators generally suck at making up words.
>character says "Fight"
He said "Let's skinny dive!"
>There's no consistency to the complaints whatsoever.
>Every comment is about how leaving Kamui is better, without other changes, poll suggests they are not just single voices of disapproval
It's like you want to be biased!
Are people really this autistic about terminology?
I think people really just think Kamui sounds cooler then Godrobe.
>"Let's skinny diving!"
It does sound cooler, and considering the meanings of these words are completely made up I don't see a problem with leaving it untranslated.
I cannot even wait for the Nonon femdom doujins.
Mako would work as a cruel mistress.
>Are people really this autistic
Not that guy, but it's pretty hard to say, considering all tumblr "artists" draw the same fucking way.
Wish Mako and Nonon had a little more interaction. A Ryuko vs Satsuki debate between them would be a war.
I want Mako and Nonon to kiss
I chose Godrobe because I prefer the rest of the translation far more than I care about two words.
I want Mako to smother Nonon with her tits as she berates her in her angry voice
Honestly I don't really care, all their /v/-tier bitching won't change anything, Daiz gonna Daiz and if they don't like it they can stick with CR and awful GOKU UNIFORMS
That makes it sound adorable doujins when?
I manually edit the subs for every episode, so I can have Underwater subs with Kamui/Gokuseifuku
How do I do this?
What about "MacBook" or "American" (when used as a noun)? You're not suggesting there's only one MacBook or only one American in the world, I presume.
You literally skipped over the next sentence in Wikipedia:
>Some proper nouns occur in plural form (optionally or exclusively), and then they refer to groups of entities considered as unique (the Hendersons, the Everglades, the Azores, the Pleiades).
>which one of these do you prefer
>project a subgroup mentality war on a simple question
What? I was just saying I don't particularly care that much about the Godrobe/Kamui issue because I prefer the rest of the translation more, so in the end I side with Godrobe.
And this thread had nothing to do with how much you liked the rest of the translation.
Why are you so upset? I was asked which I prefer and gave an answer and explained my reasoning?
Yeah, early on especially in promotional stuff they made it sound like it was more like part of his name.
Looking forward to OST 2.
Closest thing I could find. Sadly. No boobs smothering.
I remember that glorious day! it was fun.
Thank god I'm not the only one
Yeah I also chose my answer based on my favorite color.
Am I being tricked or something?
I'm pretty sure the reason I chose was a lot less arbitrary than "favorite color" or whatever other bullshit you want to come up with.
Nonon is impossibly cute. How does a person design a character this fucking cute?
These niggas tend to get cute right fairly often.
There's a cookie-cutter blueprint of these. Bitchy personality, young age, and colourful hair are a start.
I would if I could.
>Implying Nonon is bitchy
I will fight you.
She's kind of a bitch anon.
No fuck you.
I forgot this way daytime /a/.
Google Images does not discriminate
I fucking love that pony.
N-Not in a horsefucker way.
>You've just made up your own word that means something similar
What do you think translating is? If the words have meaning, made-up or not, you can translate them.
What if Satsuki is actually Lord Genome of KlK? Look closely:
>forces her people to live poorly
>this way they won't have enough money to buy designer clothing from REVOCS
>only proven ones can wear life fiber outfits
>so when life fiber parasites will take over the world, the only safe and uninfected place will be Honnouji Academy
Screencap this shit
>the meanings of these words are completely made up
Where did this idea even come from?
>Screencap this shit
Do it yourself you lazy fuck.
screncap my dikk
I always wondered who cared about a Q&A session with Hadena.
/a/ cares about everything.
this would be hilarious to witness
That's the 3rd time I've seen this prediction this week.
Not that I think it's bad speculah, but it's not like people haven't been calling satsuki a midboss from the beginning.
>start practicing drawing
>draw one face based on favorite tumblr artists
>make fun of shippers and waifufags
>while giving fanservice to said groups
can also be applied to most art used in hentai.
>They're making a LN about what happened between the Devas before the cultural festival.
This is going to be fun.
If Gama even mentions Mako, shippers will explode
L-l-l-l-listen Ryuuko! The life fibers... the-the-the life fibers are... ALIENS Ryuuko! Aliens! I-i-i mean *brap* that's insane right? Take your clothes off Ryuuko! Quick it's the only way! *burrrrp* Get NAKED with me Ryuuko!
But Ryuuko already has Senketsu to get naked.
T/N: Arigato means baka
For a fraction of a second, they combine in the OP.
When will Mako get naked and join nooodisto beeech?
I want to see her rocking body.
I prefer Godrobe / Ultima Uniform
I'd translate Handy as cellphone though.
"handy" makes it sound like it's a handjob
Honestly, Goku Uniform actually works in the west. I mean, everyone should know who DBZ Son Goku is, and understand that he's perceived as being rather strong.
Therefore, hearing the term Goku Uniform would give most people the idea of a Uniform that makes the wearer strong as fuck, which it does.
It may not be the best translation, but it still works even if the first thing that comes to a person's mind is Son Goku from DBZ.
This is all you're getting....
>not translating German to English
But Goku's uniform is bright blue/orange, heavily weighted, and literally designed to hold him back.
Goku's uniform is the antithesis of ultima uniforms.
>long, loose blanket-like garment
>I dont have the resolve to go nude yet
This anime lacks Makoservice, even Ragyo has more fanservce than her already.
>I don't want to go naked yet.
Why is Mako the purest Kill la kill?
Something to do with being round
Are you that anon who said he was going to kill me for looking at Mako sexually?
You're right about Goku's Uniform itself, but I'd imagine that when people hear the term Goku Uniform, they're thinking about Son Goku himself, rather than the actual uniform he wears.
Hence, Goku Uniform would be associated with a Uniform that makes you powerful as hell. Much like hearing Super Uniform, Mega Uniform, Ultra Uniform, etc.
In this case, even if you're thinking about Son Goku, it works as a noun describing something that's rather strong or super, which is another thing that comes to people's minds when they think of Son Goku, Super Saiyan.
But you wouldn't translate Österreich as Austria?
Does that mean i can look at Mako sexually?
That's the thing that bothers me though. When I read "Goku Uniform", the image that came to mind was the blue/orange uniform that's designed to hold the wearer back.
Then I read "Ultima Uniform" and Final Fantasy came to mind and gave me the mental image of something powerful.
I bet you waifu'd Tomoko too, faggot
English isn't my native language.
In Dutch it's called Oostenrijk, if Austria is what it's called in English then I would translate it as Austria
Why not just watch HS?
I'd really rather you didn't
but who am I to stop what you do in your private time
Austria IS what it's called in English.
ok no rsn 2b mad m8
Nah, I was just saying.
Just like handy is German for cell phone and English for getting your dick stroked.
You can stop me but you just have to answer:
Is she your waifu?
I'm confident that most people have either forgotten or don't think about the fact that Goku's actual uniform is a training tool. Instead, they think of either Kamehameha, or Super Saiyan, both of which will almost always be associated with nouns like strong, super, mega, grand, etc. Nouns that can be applied to the Uniforms students wear at Honnouji academy.
I agree it's not the best translation, but it still works even if you think of DBZ.
Scissoring end confirmed
I wanna say no because you'll accuse me of being some sort of seasonal waifu faggot that falls in love with every new girl he sees
but this is kind of different
Personally, I would have liked something like Turbo Uniform. Something to fit the silly, over the top nature of the show.
It sounds silly in Japanese as well. And if you grew up on FF you should be familiar with GodHand and weapons like it...or the GodHand game itself
How is it different?
Please explain, i'm not gonna call you a seasonal, we all were seasonals once.
Probably. It's also a nonsense word.
That's a lot of votes for an /a/ poll
>tfw not ripped enough to join nudist beach
Calling it GodClothes isn't that good and they aren't actually clothes either.
Do you mean noodisto beech?
Ask yourself this:
Should Underwater translate "Samurai" to "Japanese Feudal Warrior"?
I'm sad they stopped sexualizing Mako.
>perfectly round head
>perfectly round tits
>perfectly round ass
Why wouldn't you want to serve the empress?
Samurai has been indoctrinated into our culture ages ago and we know it means Japanese Warrior
Ask yourself this:
Should [insert sub-group] translate?
>handy is German for cell phone
Actually people usually use "Mobiltelefon" here.
Of course! You might know what a Samurai refers to but you'd be completely missing out on the etymology - whereas a Japanese viewer wouldn't because they could read the kanji. Translating it allows you to get an experience more similar to that of a Japanese viewer.
But what does it look like in decapitation mode?
HEY I'M GRUMP
Ask yourself this:
Should Commie translate tsundere as hot'n'cold/bipolar/whatever else they've used.
I wouldn't mind translating samurai into swordsman or warrior if samurai wasn't a known word.
I don't really care. I'm glad bigger weebs than me know startalk, so they can point out wordplay that I might not catch myself.
I think the completely translated version is technically fine, but worplay like that is easily lost in translation and is an important piece of context that you can miss with such a literal translation.
>translating samurai into swordsman
I just wish underwater would stop pretending like they own KLK.
If they don't get their shit together next ep I'm just going to start translating the spanish subs and uploading that for /a/ as speed subs.
Its a joke.
It doesn't really capture the sense of command to say swordsman, at least to me.
Knight is probably a good translation that captures the implications of duty and conduct accurately. Not that European knights and samurai have much in common apart from their martial nature and social system.
>I just wish underwater would stop pretending like they own KLK.
How are we "pretending to own" KLK? We just sub it at our own pace.
The typesetting has been noticeably worse, too.
Now we just need this to happen in the anime itself.
and you're doing a fantastic job
This is all entirely redundant because the typical Anglophone understands what a Samurai is. It is a common enough allusion that it doesn't need to be discussed.
I'm not sure I'd make that assumption.
Who dyed Griffith's hair pink
obviously what is called for is a TL Note of some kind.
How many people do you know who couldn't identify an archetypal 'Samurai'? I think its a pretty fair assessment.
They don't, Mobil(funk)telefon might be the "official" German word but mentally stable people don't use it!
Is that really Daiz's name? He sounds like bounty hunter from Star Wars.
The archetypal samurai for the west is horrible cliche of what the truth is.
Though, the same can be said for the archetypal knight, so I concede the point.
translating Kamui to "godrobe" is like translating Gunmen to "face mech" or "faceade" pronounced face-awd.
I'm not a weeb dammit, it's just that there are some things that should be left untranslated because of lacking English equivalents.
What is this "we" you speak of.
Again, I don't mind all of the stuff underwater does, in fact I tend to prefer it bar Goku Uniform and Kamui.
Those are literally the only two things I have a problem with with underwater.
I've already explained how the syllables and linguistics of "godrobe" don't fucking work in the past plenty of times and I don't feel like going over it again.
Type setting isn't that hard, I wish people would stop praising or dissing subs for it.
I could fucking do it.
Just, to anybody and everybody from underwater.
Don't you think the backlash to "godrobe" and just about no other term you guys translated is indication enough that it's not very good?
I mean it isn't even a portmanteau.
>mentally stable people don't use it
Actually they're the only ones who do.
>Don't you think the backlash to "godrobe" and just about no other term you guys translated is indication enough that it's not very good?
How many people download underwater subs over other ones?
It's important that the audience understands what's the given name and what's the family name.
About the same ratio as the strawpoll. Are you trying to say underwater is more popular?
You act like normalfags watch underwater subs.
Part of translating is knowing your fucking audience.
except underwater always has more seeders
>I've already explained how the syllables and linguistics of "godrobe" don't fucking work in the past plenty of times and I don't feel like going over it again.
You sound like you know your shit though, I want to hear your explanation.
More people downloaded horrible at the time of release than underwater normally has over time for any given episode of KLK bar the delayed ones.
Fucking a, give me a minute to search foolz for this.
So if Underwater would have had any kind of influence back in the day, we wouldn't know what a Samurai is today.
not saying that they have any mainstream influence right now
I tried my hand at a rapless version of Before my Body Is Dry. Now it's sort of a quiet murmuring.
yeah, their audience comes from cultures that put given names first.
It's obvious he hasn't spoken because no one has summoned him yet.
>Don't you think the backlash to "godrobe" and just about no other term you guys translated is indication enough that it's not very good?
>I mean it isn't even a portmanteau.
No, not really. People will complain about anything and everything.
I don't mind taking on constructive criticism if I agree that it makes the subs better, but this isn't a democracy. Ultimately, it's Futsuu's call as translator and my call as editor what we use, and we've decided to stick with the terminology you see. If you find that unacceptable, you're free to download an alternative.
>What is this "we" you speak of.
Underwater is a fansub group with multiple people in it, you know.
>the backlash to "godrobe"
Obviously some people don't like it, but we're not going to leave random terms untranslated while translating other similar terms just because some people don't like the sound of them.
Exactly. It isn't hard, but it makse a sub so much better.
>Obviously some people don't like it
I like Kamui and Ultima
Here's the most recent schpiel I've gone off on, take it for what it is.
A recountation of earlier points I've made
Here's the post I was recounting, I think.
Here's the first one I wrote.
At this point I don't care anymore.
I'm just a writefag who thinks about the phonetics of languages too much.
underwater can keep being faggots for all I care, it's not like I can't just edit their subs to suit my personal tastes.
They're just Daiz' tulpas.
Attack on Ganymede
What's wrong with Star Uniform and just replace "3 Star [Shitty translation] Uniform" with "Rank 3 Star Uniform"?
If you don't like that, you could use Fiber Uniform or Fiber Suit or Power Uniform or Dynamo Uniform.
Almost anything sounds better than God Robe or Ultima Uniform. I don't give a fuck about the linguistics behind it, all that matters is it's arguably accurate and sounds good; not one or the other but both.
/v/ pls go, etc, etc.
I like those more as well.
>3. power jersey
but Ryuko isn't trying to sell overpriced pieces of cardboard to me.
just overprized pieces of plastic
Weebs are gonna be weebs, can't be helped.
I don't find it unacceptable, just confusing.
Whoever decided to use godrobe and to a lesser extend ultima uniform, just seems really stubborn at this point.
I get it, you're trying to make subs for normalfags. And like I said I just hate godrobe, not underwater itself.
I figured you all circle jerked in that IRC chatroom and /a/ was some mythical shithole you didn't bother visiting.
You know what, that's okay. I'm not going to pretend the sound of things isn't what I concern myself with a lot.
I mean I spend time thinking of shit like attack names for fictional moves, purely based on how it sounds.
So godrobe being an actual translation as opposed to a phonetic translation I guess obviously won't appeal to me.
Tell shampoo and the other butbuddy of his to go fuck themselves though, they aren't helping you guys image in the slightest.
I don't get why don't just call it a # star uniform either.
and you're entirely right.
I don't see what's confusing about it. It's pretty straight forward. You are looking for reasons to hate these translations.
originally we thought the other way around, though
Confusing as to why they still use it after backlash.
It's very obviously like one of those people who works really hard on something terrible and gets mad when called out on it.
Like a fan artist or something.
I don't really care. Either is fine for me.
Way to read the entire post fuckhead.
usa is jew and euro is islam
you guys should fite in rl
Shut up deitz or whatever your name was.
Obviously the correct way to go about it is to translate it the first time via asterisk or tl note or whatever, then refer to it in proper noun form
e.g. "He's wearing a gokuseifei!" *god cloth
then refer to it as gokuseifei every other time
um whoops, wrong thread
What are you doing thinking on /a/ Anon?
Don't you know that's against the rules, you have to start trolling and spamming epic may mays if you want to contribute properly to a thread!
I like Kamui and Ultima
Because most people who watch Underwater subs don't have a problem with it, the loudest criticism comes from people who just watch CR/HS anyway, so why bother responding when the demographic they are serving doesn't mind? Pleasing people who don't download your subs doesn't make sense. I don't like a lot of Underwater's translation policies but they generally have better quality than CR/HS so I will continue to download and seed their releases for KLK.
I personally think Kamui sounds better than Godrobe, but Godrobe is as good a translation as you can get so I don't have a problem with it, and I don't understand what people find mortally offensive about it. Pretty much every criticism of the term seems forced and arbitrary by people determined to hate it.
I wondered if moot started doing post swaps in addition to image swaps.
>Tell shampoo and the other butbuddy of his to go fuck themselves though, they aren't helping you guys image in the slightest.
I hope you do realize that random leechers lurking in the public main channel have nothing to do with the actual group and its members.
Also, Shampoo is an annoying twat. You should just add him to ignore, that's what I did and life has been much nicer ever since.
If I downloaded HS first, I probably would have preferred ultima/kamui, but I went with underwater first.
I don't really give two shits about it, but I'm just used to it at this point.
I think you have to weigh how distracting and tempting TL notes are. Even decent TL notes are distracting and bad TL notes are enough to counteract any amount of good translating.
The subs I have for Guin Saga are competent, but whoever did it put TL notes with emoticons in them. I'm this close to looking for another sub, because I'm never going to get it out of the backlog with such a shitty sub.
Hey man, fuck you if you aren't even going to try to understand me.
I'm pretty much of the same viewpoint as you on underwater.
What bothers me about "godrobe" is how people continue saying it's a perfect translation and even better than Kamui and keeping jap words is only for weeb faggots who don't understand translation at all.
Even after I explain in depth >>101471241 as to why it just doesn't sound good.
I'm not even on it making sense, I'm talking strictly it sounds bad at this point. And the only response I ever get is shut up weeb or u mad.
I didn't, but I'm not going to pretend like I'm right.
I'm who you think I am most likely.
Some people think that the world will end if they use a translation note.
Even completely butchering a scene seems to be better for them. Sekai Seifuku EP2 with the jokes about Asutas name comes to mind
The only TL notes I considered justified are ones explaining information behind something that isn't widely known and would otherwise go unexplained, like if a character refers to something about a historical event and the other characters treat it like common knowledge with no extra information the TL would be justified in noting information behind the event to the viewer so they could better understand the scene.
Is this updated?
IMO, if you have a tl note, you should have it separate from the work. It's easy in books and manga because of footnotes and panelling, but I think the only way to do in anime is to include it in your release as a txt or png.
The only "joke" there was that they were getting his name wrong. There's no deeper significance in them calling him "the day after tomorrow" in the original script and using TL notes for something like that would be ludicrous overkill.
Reminder that Power Jersey and Jersey Devil are superior to all other options.
A translation note doesn't need to cover up the whole screen and CR had by far the best handling for that scene - so I disagree.
>I'm just a writefag who thinks about the phonetics of languages too much.
Yet you didn't know what self-flagellation means...? (Since you wrote 'Something like
"Self Flagellation" was an actually good translation because we have no idea what the fuck it is.')
Anyway, as for your complaint that the pronunciation for godrobe "just doesn't work", I'd like to point you to the words "garderobe" and "wardrobe", both of which are very similar to godrobe in pronunciation (especially the former). Do you have an issue with the pronunciation of these two English words as well?
Also, switching to Japanese pronunciation in the middle of an otherwise English sentence is always awkward as fuck, and no matter how smooth you claim kamui to roll of your tongue it's not going to be any different (unless you butcher the word with English pronunciation). Godrobe obviously fits in much more naturally due to its English nature.
That's the best way, yeah.
What's your (or the pasta creator's) problem with 10-bit? it definitely looks much better with gradients. Especially in darker scenes.
Godrobe is better but Ultima is shit. Better than Goku though.
Your reasons seem highly opinionated and not at all objective. I find Godrobe rolls off the tongue nicely, it fits the schematic for an English compound word. The fact that it's not a portmanteau is a non-issue, since attempting to preserve linguistic structure between Japanese and English is at worst the fevered dream of a madman and at best an amateurish attempt at translation.
This may come as a shock to you, but English and Japanese have very different aesthetics for beauty. Japanese is a language with a highly restrictive phonetic set and many, many homophones. Add on to this that Japanese has far fewer monosyllables than English and you end up with a language that rapidly becomes phonetically repetitious the longer its statements and phrases become.
English by contrast has a wider phonetic base and a much more diverse vocabulary. Because of this, things like rhyme, assonance, consonance, and repetition are aesthetic traits that must be deliberately implemented, whereas in Japanese they are commonplace due to the limited phonetic base and a high frequency of reduplicative words and phrases.
Contrary to what you believe, there is no objective standard for linguistic beauty.
It's just a meme.
Though, there are still people who want to watch animu on their toasters complaining because 10-bit breaks hardware decoding.
Voted top because kamui/Ultima was not an option for whatever reason.
I was going to try and respond to you, but after reading >>101471241 I think it's probably for the better to just inform you that you are one pompous faggot and leave you with this http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/inclination
>26% are voting for Godrobe
I'm sick that there are so many filthy infidel in my presence.
>No Jersey Devil
This right here is enough to tell people who worship Underwater subs that they shit. The majority has spoken.
inb4 Polls aren't a good way to get the opinion, and dae proxy duh polls
What the hell does the beast of the pine barrens have to do with Kill La Kill?
I am glad you spoilered that.
But truly I was not prepared.
I'd rather be a horriblesubs that a horriblescrub, faggot.
