Alright /a/, I've come back. Not knowing jack shit about any recent manga or anime, I popped in here from /co/ after loving the shit out of Berserk. I asked what else you'd recommend, on the basis that I really like Berserk.
You recommended Vinland Saga. You recommended well. Thorkell alone makes it worth reading, but I can't think of anything I didn't like about it. I was a little worried it would be fairly average, with the one or two awesome moments I always seem to see posted around. But it's fucking solid. Classy. But I've read up to date on it.
So what do I read next?
the next chapter
hunter x hunter
or reread berserk
google.com is neat
I haven't finished Berserk yet, I'm stocking up on that to read on a trip abroad.
Gantz and Hunter x Hunter though, what are the jists of those?
Gantz - everyone dies and aliens.
HxH - superior shounen.
Hajime No Ippo is good and its around 83 volumes and still on running.
Aliens I like the sound of, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't into a bit of old-school shounen. Some of those new ones you kids go on about aren't too bad either.
If you are into cars then Initial D is also a pretty good read, around 33volumes and still on going (i think)
Shin Angyo Onshii
Zetman (it gets MUCH better after the first volume)
Vagabond! its about Miyamoto Musashi
get to it
Historie - a historical manga that tells the life story of Eumenes, a secretary and general to Alexander the Great.
I really like the look of Zetman. Other two don't look half-bad either.
I think I read GUNNM in the late nineties, while I was studying French (back then there was a lot of stuff you could get in French but not English). Did they do more?
Read Vagabond now. DO IT. Pic related.
Also Hellsing maybe. Same genre, different style.
Also I just started Vinland Saga myself. Been a fan of Berserk for years too.
Vinland's great, isn't it? I love how it's completely mundane. No powers, monsters or anything like that. And it's still fucking rock.
So far I love it. Strangely, it strongly reminds me of Osamu Tezuka's storytelling. Particularly his manga Phoenix.
But that's a much deeper, philosophical manga. You'd surely like it.
I'm still on volume two, and while I love it, it still doesn't even hold a fucking candle to Berserk. I mean sure Berserk has monsters and fairies, but the characters and storytelling are genius. But I've read all 33 volumes...3 times.
also, see this thread for some samples of Hellsing epic-ness
don't be deceived by the first post, that's kind of the exception
Vinland takes awhile to get going, I felt. Once you're past the flashback though, it speeds right up.
Starting to read it.
Yeah I figure. I'm sure it only gets better. But seriously, it's weird how much it reminds me of Tezuka's manga. Not his kiddy stuff though. It seems to have the same style of story-telling, even though it's an extremely different genre.
I really doubt I'll find it better or even equal to Berserk, but I'm a hardcore Berserk fan.
Also see this thread for hellsing epic, although ignore the OP: >>10139767
I particularly liked the flashback. Sure, some of the characters were hit and miss (lol @ the chain dude), but it really did a good job of building up the character of the villagers in the short space it was allowed. Besides that, it did a good job of explaining how Thors died and making it epic in the process.
Oh yeah, I still liked it. And the rest of the story would be pointless without it. But once you're "done" with it, things really ramp up. I really enjoyed the flashback, but there was this whole feeling of wanting to get past it and move on. Which is weird because I did really like that part.
I was getting a little worried about the part right after the flashback. It really started to look like it was going to degrade into generic shonen or something like it, but it soon picked up into something incredible right after the London battle.
Yes, there's 10 volumes of Battle Angel Alita: Last Order scanlated already.
3 volumes for Ubel Blatt
3 volumes for Blaster Knuckle
1 volume for Shigurui
about 10 volumes for Hellsing
over 27 volumes for Vagabond
over 3 volumes for Historie
If I were you I 'd read the short ones first and save the awesome of Vagabond and GUNNM for last. Just a suggestion.
Now, see, I love the part on the London bridge because it introduces Thorkell. Yeah yeah yeah punches horses whatever. I'd read Vinland Saga without him, but for me, he's what takes it from being a good manga to being a great one. I had him pegged as a one-note joke character, throwing around logs like a joke. But the further I get into it, the more you see he's as solid a character as any other. By the time he's duelling with Thorfinn, and flashbacking about Thors, I can't even put it into words.
Watch one of these.
I love Thorkell, but there was something about the fight on the London bridge that made me start to worry (particularly the notion that Thorfinn might become a viking equivalent to Sasuke or something). Luckily, I was wrong about it and the manga became awesome.
I'm not THAT unfamiliar with recent manga, thank you very much.
Yeah, that scene did have that kinda feel.
To be honest, I spent the whole time reading it worrying that it was going to suddenly jump the shark or something.
If you're not familiar with Yukimura Makoto (the guy who does Vinland) trying Planetes is also a good choice. It's complete, too.
Shigurui Is pretty damn good, but slow scans are fucking slooooooow.
Just wondering, does the pace of Vagabond slow down a bit after the first couple of chapters?
Shin Angyo Onshi
20th Century Boys
OP's from /co/, so I figured he'd recognize Snikt before Blame.
I'm seconding Ippo
guys how do u read your mangos?
With our gigantic cocks.
we read it with our eyes
Anyways, I'd recommend The Ravages of Time since nobody has here yet. Takes place around the time of the Three Kingdoms warring period. You know, Lu Bu, Cao Cao, Lui Bei, etc... It's pretty good with all the intellectual strategic mindfucks.
I agree with you.
I see how so many in this thread like Thorkell.
I think he ruins the manga. He is just too ridicolous for Vinland. He doesn't fit in.
I sneak into a mangaka's house at night, put a gun to his head, and force him to draw me stuff.
Yes he does.
Yeah, pick on the foreign guy. I can't always spell perfectly... Or even sometimes it seems.
Your language is such a bother. Seriously, germanic language with french influences?
Claymore, Deathnote, and Fullmetal Alchemist are the best shounen manga I've seen that are still ongoing. With Claymore, you have to survive the initial 3 or 4 volumes of crap before it gets good. And with FMA, the manga is a lot better than the anime. In my opinion, the anime was pretty much shit comparatively.
Gantz, Berserk, Vinland, and Hellsing are my favorites otherwise. Though the fights in Gantz can get pretty tedious at times.
Congratulations, Anonymous! Your taste is shit.
Battle Angel Alita
Lone Wolf and Cub
I agree. English is such a bother. Why can't we all speak Latin again?
Fucking read Shin Angyo Onshi. If at the end you still don't like it, you can cuss at me.
That and also blade of the immortal.
I prefer Ancient Greek
