Well, I'm going to give this an attempt. Eyeshield 21 is one of my favorite manga ever (even with the lukewarm ending) and I'd like to share it with you all the night before the Big Game. Specifically, my favorite match in the whole series: Deimon Devilbats vs Shinryuuji Naga. Here's a little info on characters:
Kobayakawa Sena: Our protag. Grew up a weakling who avoided being beaten by bullies by becoming their errand boy. Running errands all the time while avoiding being late to class helped him to develop an insanely fast running speed. Conned into joining the Devilbats by Hiruma, but was moved by Kurita's kindness and dream to play in the Christmas Bowl, so he plays for the team as the mysterious Eyeshield 21.
Hiruma: Quarterback and main strategist of the Devilbats. He's a serial blackmailer which is how he's able to get funding for the team (and probably why he's allowed to carry fully automatic weapons around during games). He pushes for all-out offense for the Devilbats. He, Kurita, and Musashi were the founding members of the team.
Kurita: A gentle giant and the foundation of Deimon's line. He and Hiruma were going to go to Shinryuuji and play for the Naga, but his scores were too low so he was relying on getting in on a physical merit program. Agon, ace for the Shinryuuji Naga, resented Kurita's lack of speed though and applied for the merit even though he could have easily gotten in on test scores. Hiruma went with Kurita to Deimon rather than abandon his friend.
Monta: Sena's current best friend. He grew up idolizing a baseball player and got a glove from him, but he's such balls at throwing that he was kicked off the baseball team. But since Football values specialized players he's found a home as their receiver. He, Sena, and Komusubi form the Three Shrimp, since lack of height in football is normally a major disadvantage. They're doing a good job of rising about it though.
Mamori: Sena's best friend since childhood. She's very protective of him, but as he's gotten more confident she's seen that he can stand on his own. She's the manager of the team and has a very subtle budding romance with Hiruma.
Musashi: The third founder of the Devilbats: The 60 Yard Magnum. He dispelled the rumor by explaining while he has the power to kick a ball 60 yards, he lacks the control to reliably score a field goal at that distance. Then he did it anyway. He was originally forced to quit the team to help with his dad's construction business, but with Deimon's success and a plea from his father he was convinced to rejoin the team and see that they reach their final goal: Play at the Christmas Bowl. And this is their last chance, because after this year they'll leave Deimon.
The Ha-Ha Brothers: Not actually brothers, they're three thugs who were the primary tormentors of Sena. Hiruma blackmailed them into joining the team and they eventually found they liked it. Their leader is Jumonji, and he's fiercely protective of Kuroki and Togano. Even though they probably are holding him back from achieving better things, they're his friends and he'll always defend them.
Yukimitsu: A total brain that spent almost his entire school career too busy cramming to play any sports. But after watching Deimon play an exhibition match to attract recruits he tried out. Tragically, Yukimitsu has done so little to develop his body that he simply doesn't have the stamina to play a full game of football. He's been on the bench the whole season, but he's put in a lot of hard work and may just get a chance to shine.
Komusubi: A short linemen who speaks the language of strong men, that only truly strong men can understand. He sees himself as Kurita's apprentice and is all around amazing. Seriously, best character in the manga right here.
Natsuhiko Taki: the biggest idiot. But he's got really versatile skills and a good attitude, so he's a great Tight End for the team. But seriously, he's such a dumbass.
Suzuna Taki: Natsuhiko's little sister. She's much smarter and is Sena's gal pal, but it seems he may want to eventually make her his girlfriend from the ground up. She's head cheerleader for Deimon.
Doburoku: Coach and trainer for Deimon, he originally trained Kurita, Hiruma, and Musashi. They ran into him again in America and he helped them complete hell training: pushing a big rig from Texas to Vegas. He used to be a legendary player in Kantou along with the coach of the Ojo White Knights.
Well that's all the notable players for Deimon. In Shinryuuji theres:
Agon: The Ace for the Naga. He has god-speed impulse, which is a very manga way of saying that he's got really good reflexes. He's totally amoral and full of himself, stating that the perfect football team would be 11 of him. He only shows any respect for Ikkyu, the Shinryuuji receiver, who he admits is a genius at catching.
Unsui: Agon's twin brother. He lacks god-speed impulse, so he's trained very hard to be good enough to play on the same team as his brother. They don't like each other at all, but Unsui's made it his mission to see that Agon doesn't get so lazy that he fails to make a name for himself.
Ikkyu: The receiver for Shinryuuji and considered the best receiver in the region. Looks like Vegeta. Shy around girls because Shinryuuji is an all-boys school.
It should be noted that Shinryuuji is considered the second strongest team in Japan, and is undefeated in this particular tournament for several years. But Deimon can't lose to them or they won't ever make it to the Christmas Bowl.
I'm gonna reread this shit right now
As evil as a high school football player gets. If anyone has any questions about the characters commenting during the game, just ask.
Was this before or after the final game against White Knights?
Before. If they can beat Shinryuuji then they'll get their rematch.
How did his hair grow back so fast?
He shaves his hair later. And then he immediately starts wearing a dreadlock wig
This match might have been the most intense, but I liked the vs. Oujo White Knights match more because of FUCKING SHIN
For me, this match just has so much emotion that it's my favorite. That and Hiruma the Time Wizard.
This was such a great match. Always love Monta's catching battles and Yukimitsu got to shine so much. Plus, it seemed like a match vs real monsters even more than when they played Teikoku, Ojo for the second time, and the Dinosaurs (need a refresh on where they were from).
Any idea where I can download the entirety of the series? I've done so in the past but there were missing chapters and bad scans.
Hakushu or however it's spelled were the Dinosaurs if I recall.
Several chapters have bad scans in my cbrs, but I got them from a torrent.
I just remembered that guy lel
Oh, guess I forgot to include him in the info on the Devilbats. Oh well, no one cares.
Get rekt vegeta
Hmm, had an embedded file in this page apparently. Is my computer being raped as we speak?
Is your fick out of your pants?
I left most of these pages out, but the ones that I thought were really cool got left in. I like this one because it's hard to see how Agon and Unsui are twins but this image brings it home.
yes, but I've read the whole series before so I don't have much to say
I'm living in Seattle.
This city has desperately hyped this game so much, but I'm so autistic that I'm gonna sleep through the game so I don't have to deal with the stress.
I really hope we win.
As a fan of Eyeshield, I can't help but root for underdogs. I'm gonna watch it at a sports bar across from my girlfriend's work tomorrow.
Of course we are, that's why we're not talking.
So, the Broncos?
Alright, used to more discussion I guess? I'm not used to /a/ really. I'm a /co/ and /tg/ guy; I left /a/ when wikispammer was out of control
Neither team is the underdog. Seahawks are clearly the "bad guys" though.
Why? Because of Sherman?
Seattle is the underdog, never won before.
The QB is a QT who visits sick kids.
They have a crab named Marshawn Pinch
Shit's kawaii, yo
Its not only that. Seattle is the most penalized team in the league, head coach cheated in college and have the second worst bandwagon fans next to the Patriots. The Broncos are being shoved down everyone's throats as the good guys, what with Peyton coming back off that injury and having such a great year.
"Given Seattle’s famous climate, local weather forecasters have had to coin a word for non-dreary interludes: they are “sunbreaks.” When the rain stops and the clouds lift even for a few hours, locals pounce. Offices empty; parks fill up. It’s the upside of bracing for misery: Any ray of hope, no matter how transient, is a cause for celebration. That’s what I think about when I see school buses full of Marshawn Lynch jerseys and scowling Seahawks logos fashioned out of Post-its on high-rise windows: We are enjoying a sunbreak. And who knows? We’re not supposed to hope, but maybe this is the team that ends the heartache. Maybe, after almost 40 years, the clouds are finally lifting."
I live in Edmonton, and I've never seen more than a single Seattle logo annually. Now it seems like every Dick and Jane in town is a "fan"
The reason Seattle has so many bandwagon fans is because we're used to failure.
Now that things are finally happening, people are starting to hope.
I don't see how they're gonna beat this guy without stabbing him in a dogpile.
It's been so long since I've read this that I've forgotten how they beat just about all of their opponents.
Not devious enough for Hiruma
This page, based on the discussion I've seen in this thread, seems like it could be a Seahawks fan talking. Good luck guys.
I can't remember how they do it, but I do remember they do it at LITERALLY the last second
All this despair
And all this time I thought Eyeshield 21 was some kinda supernatural battle manga. Turns out it's about football. Thanks for introducing me to something new OP.
It's very good! You should read it from the beginning. This match is even better when you're emotionally invested in these characters.
Well, it's still basically a battle manga.
Guess I forgot to attach an image.
I remember trying to imagine how good the Teikoku Alexanders were, to have beaten this fuckers EVERY SINGLE TIME.
>thinking that it's not a supernatural battle manga
Don't post images.
Sena's getting serious
You can't tell me what to do.
based fucking sena
Stop being a dick.
There's an image limit.
It's gonna be sad to see the hawks lose tomorrow. The stronger the hope, the greater the disappointment.
The best page in the entire manga.
>posting images during a storytime
What a faggot
Can't even imagine how painful it would be to see the crowd leaving.
Not even close. It's hard to pick a best one though since there's a lot of really good pages.
I included this page so that anyone not super familiar with the characters could use it. I thought about posting it as the first image but it spoils the game up till this point so it's here.
I want to fug Suzuna
then I'll post a link
>thinking that it's not a supernatural battle manga
That took me too fucking long to find
Personally, I think the Devilbat Ghost against that medical school was a bit more battle manga-esque.
I admire your dedication. "Eyeshield" didn't bring eye protection to mind at all. I thought it'd be some kind of miniature shield worn like an eyepatch or something.
Sena already did
Habashira Rui is such a great character, he's probably got the most development out of anyone in the manga
>yfw you realize that Sena had basically no development and that all the development was used on side characters.
Biggest flaw in the manga.
Dinosaurs was a much better game than Nagas as well as best game in the series and where it should've ended. Marco is a better villain than Agon, Gao and Hiromi are better than all of Agon's team combined.
>Marco is a better villain than Agon
>Doing everything for the woman he loved
ut wot m8?
Yeah, no one on the Dinosaurs was a villain. They were all pretty good people.
>They were all pretty good people.
If Hiruma had access to Gao, he'd use him the exact same way.
They just wanted to win.
This one took me even longer to find since I didn't have it saved
This manga has so many one-page worthy pages
Injuries happen in Football. Gao wasn't going out of his way to injure players, he was tackling normally. It just so happens he can rip steel out of concrete casually.
If I could have one manga related wish, it'd be to see the version of this tournament where Sena and Marco swapped balls.
Marco became a villain because he so badly wanted to win for his girl
The two even talked about it, and how Marco kept going even though he knew she hated it
And now it's time to agree with you about him having so much development. Almost none of it happening during matches even.
Seriously, Habashira is so fucking stylin
Long white gakurans just look so cool
I really love the whole delinquent uniforms of Zokugaku
Is manga really better than the anime?
I've watched the anime.
Including this to give some perspective on how absolutely unbeatable Agon seems.
Who has the better development, him or Sakuraba?
Yet the Alexanders still beat them every year.
I want to say Habashira because it takes longer to come to fruition and felt like a harder struggle for him than for Sakuraba. Habashira didn't have a team that would work with him with his ambitions like Sakuraba did.
Sakuraba has more screentime because of Oujo, but I like Habashira's development more
I would say they're even had it not been for Habashira's involvement in the end game
I wonder if the Dinosaurs could have taken the Alexanders.
I almost want to tear up when I think I never played on any teams in school. I'll never experience what Yukimitsu is feeling. I'll never be on a team...
Well, the Dinosaurs didn't have much going for them other than Marco and Gao
I don't know if Gao could touch Teikoku's dodge-specialized QB, and I'm pretty sure Marco couldn't beat Eyeshield or Skywalker
To be honest, Gao carried that team.
The Dinosaurs might've actually had an easier time than The Devilbats with Gao. They don't have an answer to him the like Kurita and if he'd broken a single member of The Alexander's line-up, I don't think they'd have the morale to keep up.
Although I think The Devilbats and The Alexanders are superior teams to The Dinosaurs, I'd say that it all comes down to how The Alexanders respond to Gao, and if anything was made clear, it's that the absolute will to win is probably the best response to him. Something The Alexanders seemed to take for granted.
It was 3 of them iirc: Gaou, Marco, and that cornerback with the slender arms.
The issue is, The Dinosaurs defense wouldn't be able to handle the Alexander Offense.
And the Alexander Defense could pretty easily handle the Dinosaur Offense.
Ah, I forgot about the armbreaker, but again, he wouldn't be able to touch skywalker, and ES would just plow through him like he would everyone else except Gao
Pretty sure ES could handle Gao too.
IIRC it took nearly half the Devilbat line just to stop him.
I can't remember how the Alexander's line looked. Were any of them a counter for Gao? It doesn't matter if he can't touch the quarterback if they lose their entire line to injuries.
I dunno, he's no shin, he said so himself
And I don't think willpower alone would let him beat Gao head on
That being said, could Shin beat Gao?
Trident tackle probably wouldn't be enough since it didn't kill Sena outright.
It's not proven, but Hiruma and Marco both agree that Gao would've crushed Shin without any trouble. Hiruma not standing, Marco's supposed to be the best player analyser in the series if I recall correctly.
They're about to get rused hard.
Gah, need to focus more. I'll have to grab a snack before I make the next thread. Still a few to go before image limit though.
So, who are you guys rooting for in tomorrow's game? I have no team in particular I want to win, but I do hope we get a really good game.
It's between the best offense and best defense afterall (supposedly).
This is where I would dispute
Lightspeed trident tackle from a guy that LIFTED Kurita, the only man to ever out-power Gao, because of his weight
whoops, I forgot about Don, but that game sucked, so I forgot about it
I'm not necessarily disagreeing with Shin being able to handle Gao, but just to play Devil's Advocate and try to rationalize an explanation. Shin's offense could probably knock down Gao, but Gao's offense could probably destroy Shin's arms. And then Gao's second offense could probably destroy Shin's legs when he gets up again because two limbs wasn't enough to stop him.
I'm just making guesses here though, because I don't want to doubt Hiruma.
>the trip ruse was a distraction
>now Baldy has the pass route
But Don's offense could only take Shin out for half a quarter, and Don was way stronger than Gao
I never got into this because
I lold pretty hard when the first black guy that appears has the characters going "so this is the limit of the japanese body?"
Image limit is still 150 right?
at least they're honest with it
The entirety of the last game (which is terrible) is about how fast that black guy is and how strong this white guy is when they're fighting the Americans
Hot damn. Well I'll post a few more pages, throw a snack in the microwave, then get back to storytiming.
Fight on Yuki.
Is it normal to get ASMR from a football manga?
From this one, yes
Legitimately one of the most intense manga I've ever read
does japan even actually play american football in highschool? or at all?
Deimon tends to kick the ass of any player that accomplishes something amazing, if you're wondering why they seem to be stroking his fanny with their feet.
That PoV must feel really good.
And now I go to snack. Be back in a few minutes.
love you op, re-reading these from so long ago have been a blast
I'm rereading the Oujou vs Deimon 2 because of this thread.
Ah, Hungryman. You are the least awful frozen tv dinners.
I remember the Christmas Bowl sticky. Such an amazing moment on /a/.
Ah, I missed that. What was it like?
Thanks, but I have to go sleep. Have fun.
If you remove Agon from Shinryuuji or Shin from Ojo, Demon would have destroyed them without much effort. The teams probably wouldn't get weakened as much as Hakushu but they just wouldn't be a match for Demon anymore.
The ending was really bad, I would say the manga got pretty bad after they played against the dinosaurs. Sena also was a pretty disappointing main character, I've always hoped for him to grow up, but he remained some weak, easily intimidated faggot until the end. Im also kinda sad there wasn't more of Suzuna, easily best girl.
The side characters are what made this manga so magical and Habashira was my favorite character, really liked his development.
>I've always hoped for him to grow up, but he remained some weak, easily intimidated faggot until the end
yeah it's not like there's proof of the contrary in this very game or anything
It was the only time i've seen such a large discussion about Eyeshield. It was as if everyone was reading it, but no one was talking about it. Then everyone came out of the woodwork when they won the game to going to the Christmas bowl.
>but he remained some weak, easily intimidated faggot until the end
Payton Manning is GOAT. I would read a manga about him.
>The ending was really bad
>I would say the manga got pretty bad after they played against the dinosaurs
The peak was definitely the Naga match, then it slowly loses its quality, they were running out of interesting ideas, good focus on characters and Murata's art was getting weaker and weaker (his art was at his best during the Poseidon match)
>Sena also was a pretty disappointing main character, I've always hoped for him to grow up, but he remained some weak, easily intimidated faggot until the end
This one is pure bullshit.
>Im also kinda sad there wasn't more of Suzuna
She didn't have any character development so I guess she was really just eye candy support.
>The side characters are what made this manga so magical
That's why the World Arc sucked ass.
E21 got a sticky? Link?
Murata was incredibly inspired by this match.
Yeah, makes me wonder why they didn't just spend a bunch of time before the dinosaur game building up the characters, it would have make the final tournament match a lot better.
>I would say the manga got pretty bad after they played against the dinosaurs
The Christmas Bowl itself was pretty good.
I mean, that's when we got Sena trying to beat the real Eyeshield 21 and Hiruma finally having faith in his teammates.
god i love murata's art style. it strikes just the right balance between realism and cartoonishness imo. it's a huge part of why eyeshield 21, and now his version of opm, have been so enjoyable to read
>The Christmas Bowl itself was pretty good
"Our Quarterback is a girl!"
"Oh cool! and?"
The Teikoku were horribly bland and uninspired characters. The only thing worse are the americans who were simply freak show material.
This thread reminds me why I should go back to rereading Eyeshield after catching up on Ippo, which is a monstrosity itself. I dropped it somewhere before the Dinosaurs fight because that's when the latest scanlations were at. Which is great because I've mostly forgotten everything, thanks OP.
Sure, don't even mention how Monta has to face off against his hero's own child.
W-welcome! (I'm glad that this has inspired you to pick the manga back up. The Dinosaurs match is amazing and a huge bit of growth for Sena).
>Monta has to face off against his hero's own child.
And that still doesn't make Taka a good character. At all.
Delinquent Death Blow is very against the actual rules, right?
>implying Jumonji cares
There's so much shit here that would get flagged in a real football game. Agon would have been ejected the instant he karate-chopped that fucker.
You do realize that this is super lazy writing and nothing more than a shallow show off? Just like the girl quarterback thing.
IIRC they're allowed to pull on uniforms in Japan.
i'm curious, what do you think murata could have done to make the alexanders better characters (other than completely rewriting their role in the story)
Jumonji best lineman
You are in America, too as long as you're not an offensive lineman and you're not grabbing near the neck or arms.
Murata didn't write it.
oh, he didn't? well my question still applies...
Not enough character development for any of the linemen.
Hiruma/Mamori is excellent
It's nice and subtle. It gets advanced in like, maybe 3 panels a match. But by the Dinosaurs match there's almost as much sexual tension as anxiety over who will win the match.
Bullshit, Mamori is pure.
The purest beauty.
Why is Mamori-neechan so perfect?
Are these tears manly? Or does Unsui need to believe in himself for once?
Not waiting until the very last minute to introduce them would have definitely help shaping them into less shallow characters.
She was better with her original haircut.
Best page of ES21 is Sena jumping over Shin in the last White Knights game.
>two hayais on the same page
Must defeat Vegeta
It's fucking field goal range, it should be pretty fucking obvious.
18 is the same as 21 though, it's still a 3 possession game.
Only 9 left.
This should probably be a reaction image
Well guess I'll need to make another thread. Think I may take a short break first though.
>goku still triumphs over vegeta in the end
It's just sad.
nope, they only face agon 1 time
