So what exactly is wrong with using VLC? I've got both VLC and MPC, but MPC is such a hassle to set up. Are there any specific differences that I would notice? Because so far they both seem to be the same aside from setup.

yeah, life is real tough when you're mentally handicapped
>Are there any specific differences that I would notice?
The capability to have not-shit scaling and subtitle rendering

VLC does that all for me.

Here you go retard.
>>
>>101275010

But why should I have to go through all that shit if VLC has it from the get-go? And I don't understand the subtitles rendering argument since I don't care how the subtitles look as long as I can read them.

Back in the days, VLC was terrible (huge artifacts, audio/video desynch, etc.). Since then, it's equivalent to MPC, but the "VLC hate" is one of those memes that are self-perpetuating in /a/.

You really should go to the effort to configure it yourself, that would only take 10 minutes at most. But if you really are retarded then CCCP or KCP are the bare minumum.

I used VLC until a couple of months ago, but ran into problems with some files (Hi Vivid and Commie!), so I tried MPC.

It was pretty fucking easy to set up, everything plays properly and looks sharper. I hate that WMP-style GUI though.

.mkv lets you use softsubs (that is, you can change the language or even watch it without subs), .avi needs hardsubs, which mean that subs are encoded in the video directly.

>>101275237
It only matters if you watch it on a TV or through a projector.
>>
>>101274785
For some reason, my MPC is now refusing to play subtitles and I'm forced to use VLC
What gives?
>>
>>101275141
Because MPC looks better. It takes two minutes more to set it up but onces its set up it takes no more effort than VLC. In fact you probably save time in the long run as you aren't rebuilding your font cache everytime you install a new font.

Don't start this. KCP is for lazy plebs who just want to install and forget. The rich man's VLC. That is its role. You want to do it the proper way, you install CCCP which is actually maintained by people who know what they're doing and patch things, and install madVR separately. KCP has its purpose, but don't try to claim its superiority.

KCP uses a beta project for VSfilter, and I think that's the only thing that CCCP has better

These threads always make me smile at just how angry some people get at someone's choice of freeware.

They are as tolerated and accepted as rec threads. People on /a/ just like to shit on people not using what they use, or also known as, superior media players.
I used to use VLC and take screenshots with puush. And before that streaming. The problem is that the people who use VLC and see it getting shit on they get all anal clenched because the "hipsters" that are the /a/ users shit on, not only their favorite anime, but how they watch it as well. That's all there is to it, because if they were actually interested in how to watch their cartoons they would ask, but no, instead choose to complain about why /a/ hates what they like.
