Why does everyone hate Gonzo? I haven't seen much by them, but Gankutsuou and Last Exile are fucking awesome.
Protip: Rosario + Vampire sucks though.
The most of their shows suck balls and they fuck up manga to anime adaptions especially well.
So aside from the 2 animu I liked, is there nothing else good? I just like them for their high production value.
I see what you did there
Read the book of Count of Monte Cristo
Gankutsuo is shit in comparison
Read Bokurano and N.H.K., Then watch their respective series. Prepare to rage.
>I just like them for their high production value.
LOL. It wouldn't by any chance be the case that Gankutsuou and Last exile are the only two GONZO anime you've seen?
N.H.K was good. It had a different tone than the Manga, but it's ending was closer to the book.
If people who read the book loved Gankutsuou as well.
Fuck, Gonzo only got bad in recent years, plus most of their catalog have mediocre titles.
No, Romeo X Juliet is another. The animation was great. Shit show though.
Bullshit. They've basically only been around since the year 2000 and they've sucked for all that time.
As I recall the animation turned to shit about 10 episodes in.
They totally fuck up most of the things they do. You just happened to watch two of their good ones.
Their endings especially leave a lot to be desired.
Gonzo is over-extended. They try to do too much, and thus fail at a lot of it. They also tend to fuck up anything they've got creative control over.
Luckily, sometimes they only do animation, and another company retains creative control, and somehow induces high quality. Picture related.
So: I don't hate Gonzo, but I know most of their stuff is shit.
Romeo x Juliet is one of the reasons why I am so wary of Gonzo. It has to be one of the most inconsistent, unpredictable studios out there. You never know when it'll pull something that's pretty damn good like Gankutsuou, NHK and Red Garden, or when it'll be an epic failure such as RxJ and Saikano.
I got back on track after a couple of QUALITY episodes. Didn't quite save the plot, though. What a shame. And it had my favorite premiere in a looooong time.
Fuck you, the Gatekeepers saga, Gad Guard and Kaleido Star were awesome!
Gravion and Vandread were mediocre but entertaining.
>It got back on track
Only produced by GONZO
Not only do they fuck up their concepts royally, but they occasionally tend to ERR on their animation and art quality.
I have seen some episodes that would put Studio Pierrot to shame.
Second season was ass, though. Sadly.
No they weren't. None of them were. Kaleido star would have been nice if it didn't have such dreadfully slow pacing.
I just finished NHK last night, what's different in the manga? I started getting kind of annoyed when everything got all BAW until the last little bit of the last episode. All in all kind of unsatisfying.
They did Vandread?
I like Vandread (had to watch it again to wash away Nabisco bad taste) ... GONZO is more misses that hits.
Misaki is much more devilish...which is awesome.
So she doesn't go from heartachingly cute to suddenly emo?
Vandread was cool..
Meia was fap
She goes from cute to HEY THAT FUCKING BITCH IS WAY MORE FUCKED UP THAN SAITO
Gonzo is one of the companies that can either strike out or knock it out of the park. The thing is, their strike outs far out number their home runs.
Most big studios have achieved something if not several things of the same level as Gankutsuou.
I liked Pumpkin Scissors. That was done by them wasn't it? And Garasu no Kantai i think.
I loved Gankutsuou. However I haven't read the book yet.
ITT: GONZO RAGE
Kiddy Grade was HORRIBLE except for Lumiere.
Pumpkin Scissors? I liked it better when it was called Fullmetal Alchemist.
Which was also shit.
Gankutsuou, Last Exile, and NHK were the only good shows they have that come to mind.
Gonzo does lots of cash-in shows and they bitch about fansubs. Also they have a habit of poor series pacing, and tend to have lots of QUALITY animation.
Why does everyone compare Pumpkin Scissors to Fullmetal Alchemist?
Because they're the same FUCKING thing DUR HUR
Because they never actually watched either, and are merely looking to troll.
Granted, the Pumpkin Scissors anime is mostly shit, but it achieved that on its own time and effort, not because it bore any relation to FMA.
I still haven't read the manga, which I imagine is probably better.
Fuck yes, you are the shittiest troll on a Sunday full of shitty trolls.
Why are you such a fucking faggot?
The manga is better.
Also they are nothing like each other; Pumpkin Scissors has NO magical/fantasy elements at all; the main characters are nothing alike, and the series have completely different themes.
Why are you so unoriginal and pointless?
Has anyone else read the Pumpkin Scissors manga? I'd like to know just how much the anime translation failed to keep to the original.
Kind sir, your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
Because Gonzo can't write for shit. If you can't write good endings, then go make some shorts! I'd really like to see some of the awesome shorts out there made into animation.
Well, that out of the way, I can't seem to think of a good anime studio.
What's /a/'s favorite?
Mango is kinda shit too.
why? Hidamari Sketch and SzS.
Manga is shit too, don't bother.
Well, that sucks.
KyoAni and Gainax are thrown around a lot lately.
They used to like Production I.G. and Bones, but they have fallen out of favor recently.
I'm personally a Madhouse fan, they have some good stuff.
If not for Gurren-Lagann, that show would still be just as divisive as GONZO - 80% shit, 20% win, with the win diluted by decades of shit. Like GONZO they started off well enough but got progressively worse, though less so than other companies because everyone at Gainax is stubborn.
If they made last exile and gankutsuoh , it's not possible to hate them :^]
I believe that the name GONZO appears somewhere in the credits for Seto no Hanayome as well.
I actually thought that show was at least 30% awesome, and at least the ending was good.
Yeah. They were pretty much dead until GL came along. They were seen as a company long past their glory days, capable only of fanservice crap like "He is my Master"
Then GL comes out, then everybody starts sucking Gainax genitals again.
Except for things like, you know, Diebuster, which finished up shortly after GL was announced. Gainax has never been a prolific studio, Gonzo probably turns out more shows in one year than Gainax does in five. They did a handful of service shows to build up money for pet projects like GL (and money management has always been an issue with Gainax).
Co-production with AIC.
All animation studios have a massive amount of duds.
The one with arguably the best record is Kyoto Animation. Nothing they produced are exceptional flops, although I don't particular like any of the shows they've produced (besides Full Metal Panic, but crappy insert songs are crappy).
Last Exile, Gankutsuou and NHK won my respect for Gonzo, but I don't watch that many crap series anyway so I can't tell how badly they do otherwise. Bones is still my first love though.
Lucky Star shows how bad they can become.
Then again they've produced like what? 8?
Lucky Star was awful otaku-pandering self referencial bullshit. But it sold well, so it's a success on their part I guess.
I think it's best summed up this way: The premise of Gonzo's shows always have huge potential therefore expectations are high when they air. Usually the show starts out fine but sooner or later it all goes to shit.
There's a few exceptions but Gonzo hasn't earned it's reputation for nothing. Yet a lot of us keep going back for more and getting burned because the show always sounds like it could be great.
