Well, this chapter took me more than I thought, but here it is.
Bad (maybe) news at the end of the chapter

About Sekai Oni and the Yume Nikki LN (that I know a lot of you are waiting for)... well, for the LN, once I finish translating the Leviathan shorts, I'll get on it. Sekai Oni will take a while longer, since... well, it's a surprise, but anyway, chapter three won't come out any time soon. Sorry. But I guarantee the wait will be worth it.

And, that's it. As you can read, the manga ends next month (on the 20th). So, I guess I'll be making this thread only one more time.

As always, you can download the chapters from this folder, or read them on Batoto.

But it's a web manga, and there has been no mention of a tankobon release.
I don't think it's production is expensive, so there is no need to end it unless it's very unpopular. And I think that the Yume Nikki is famous enough to get readers just with its name, especially when it doesn't require buying a magazine.

Ok, maybe I parsed it wrong. I meant that it had quite a lot of bad feedback. People didn't like it. Until things started moving, that's it (there's really a big change between chapters 3 and 4 in pacing). At least, that's what I could gather from the west fans. I never went to any place where they discussed this in Japanese, so I don't know what they thought, but I guess it was kinda similar.

Ok, so, everything is uploaded (the chapter in batoto, mediafire, and even the PSD).

By the way, I found this doujin by a guy in pixiv, and I was thinking about translating it. It's about Madotsuki appearing in Gurtena's gallery during one of her dreams (it's called The Dream Madotsuki saw), and interacting with Ib's cast. It's still incomplete (only 23 pages so far), but it should be pretty easy to update an exhentai gallery or something like that as new pages come out.
Are you guys interested, or am I wasting my time?

I wish it too. If it wasn't, the whole manga would ammount to less than 200 pages. Not weird for a manga with only one tank (I really hope they pull it out), but certainly, less than I wanted. But even if it had 40 or even 60 pages, it would still be less than I wanted.
>>101198600
Well, if I tell you the truth, I think the problem was that people jumped to conclusions. I remember reading a lot of comments that were like "This is boring. It's like watching a let's play with Madotsuki's silly comments". They didn't wait for any world building, nor enjoyed how relaxed it was at first. And suddenly, after three chapters of that and one month break, everything became incredibly rushed. That's the feeling this manga gives me.

His backgrounds were perfect and at least to me he made Madotsuki very interesting so far to speculate on.

Being rushed into ending the manga might make it seems bad though. I hope there's at least a interview or something in the future to explain on why that manga only made it to 9 chapters...
>>
>>101208970
I'm not sure if they were familiar with the game before they started working on it. The only thing I know is that Akira (the author of the LN) was afraid of working on something like this, where there was the risk to disappoint an already existing fanbase, but that he knew about the game (his imouto introduced him to it). Tomizawa also talks about loving the characters, although if you ask me, he doesn't seem too enthusiastic with the idea of the manga (even though he says it's the kind of story he would have picked himself), but it may be related to his personality or something else. But Machigerita only talks about how he wants to make this something that the player can see as "a truth that can coexist with his truth, but as something different".
>>101209413
I guess I should translate the interviews they made before they started, shouldn't I?
>>

>I guess I should translate the interviews they made before they started, shouldn't I?
Well if it explains anything regarding the mindset going into the manga, then sure. I'm honestly still feeling depressed that we only get so little this story so I'll take whatever extra I can get.
>>
This is Tomizawa's interview. The translations is choppy, but you get the idea:
>--Tell us, what did you think when they told you about doing the manga version of "Yume Nikki"?
>Yume Nikki is quite interesting. It's the type of thing I would choose myself.

>--What is your image of "Yume Nikki", Tomizawa-sensei?
>Comical and gentle.

>--What can we expect from the main character, Madotsuki?
>I hope all the readers come to love her too, as well as the other characters.

>--Finally, could you give us a comment for all the readers that will start the manga version of "Yume Nikki"?
>There are a lot of fans of "Yume Nikki", so I'm really nervous, but I'll do my best to bring a new side to the game worlds image, everyone can love the characters even more.

I'll go with Machigerita now.

That's what I thought when they announced him doing the manga. It's the kind of concept he would do.

This is Machigerita's. As you can see, I may have mixed something in my previous comments. Also, again, the translation is choppy, and quite free (specially the last part), but the ideas are there.

>--Tell us, what did you think when they told you about doing the manga version of "Yume Nikki"?
>I already felt grateful by being able to play the game, so I was really surprised, but I also felt honored. I think of it as a very valuable opportunity.

>--Machigerita-san, please, tell us about your image of "Yume Nikki".
>As a player, I got the feeling of freedom from Yume Nikki's world. By putting yourself as the main character, you get to experience her feelings, explore Kikiyama's world,...... or even try to experience it in many other ways, but any of those ways share that feeling of freedom.

>--What did you thhin when you heard you'd be working with Tomizawa-sensei?
>Just with his name, I knew we were talking about high quality. I was quite shocked.
>He can really bring out the worlds of the original game, so as a player, I feel really happy.

>--Finally, could you give us a comment for all the readers that will start the manga version of "Yume Nikki"?
>Each player has his own answer about Yume Nikki.
>But what answer is ther truth is not something the players can decide themselves.
>The real truth, I think that's something hidden within Kikiyama-san himself, and I don't feel it's my work to bring that out of him, nor that I have a right to.
>This work is derived from my view on the world of Yume Nikki, with my own answer.
>I would feel pretty honored if other players could let this answer of mine live inside themselves as something new, with their own answer.

This is Ako's one. I somehow thought this was Akira's (I didn't even know Ako had one) so I mentioned the little sister with the wrong person. It's clearly not my day.

>--Tell us, what did you think when they told you about doing the Light Novel version of "Yume Nikki"?
>I was really surprised. I've known about Yume Nikki from a long time, since my little sister introduced it to me.
>Personally, seeing a work being played so many times, and people making fanarts made me happy, but when I was the one that had to draw them, to be honest, I felt really nervous.

>--Were you specially careful when drawing illustrations this time?
>I was really careful not to disturb the atmosphere of the game.
>The world of Yume Nikki is a unique one, so I hessitated when trying to reproduce the atmosphere of it's worlds and characters, trying to produce the right proportions, and being careful of not leaving any inmaturity.

>--What do you think of Madotsuki?
>Of course, this is a pretty personal interpretation, but I feel that her being called "window" is because it's what she is to the player.

>--Finally, could you give us a comment for all the readers that will start the Light Novel version of "Yume Nikki"?
>The Yume Nikki light novel is something that was born from Akira-san's a my interpretation.
>I think the dreams have many interpretations, and each player sees the world differently, but for that same reason, I think it's interesting to see it under someone else's point of view.

And finally, this is Akira's. So yeah, it looks like everyone knew about the game beforehand.

>--Tell us, what did you think when they told you about doing the Light Novel version of "Yume Nikki"?
>I was really happy to be able to work in something that has been loved for such a long time, but at the same time, I was really nervous. My hads were shaking, thinking that I couldn't do anything careless and, I started to read a meaningless book about psychology, and it reallly went a long time before I started writing.

>--What's Akira-sensei's image of the game?
>It's a dream, without a doubg. You're free to interpretate it, but there's no real answer. You can especulate "this may have happened, or maybe this", like when someone tells you a dream. More than writting a novel, this felt like being a counselor to a patient and being caught in their story.

>--Were you specially careful when writing this time?
>I poured my best in reproducing the player experience of Yume Nikki.
>It's not a story where the characters chat happily, nor follows the usual story structure, and it's even stated as a non official story.
>When you look at it like that, this work is almost impossible. You're not able to do anything. If you were to write, you would be doing an original work. For example, the main character, commonly known as Madotsuki-chan, doesn't say a word besides "No. Impossible", so I was quite tied and troubled.
>You have to start writing, and carefully put together all the parts, trying to reproduce the eerie atmosphere that you had while playing the game, wondering what does that effect mean,... it was like looking at a dream that wasn't yours to begin with. If you can reproduce that feel, I think that's the way to go. Or rather, anything else would be a lie. I worked really hard in that feel.

It doesn't enter in just one post, so last question in next post.

>--Finally, could you give us a comment for all the readers that will start the Light Novel version of "Yume Nikki"?
>This novel's interpretation is my interpretation, and not the official story, so it doesn't have the "right answer". Look at the huge dream of "Yume Nikki", be lost exploring it,... that's the kind of path to follow. Everyone, please keep an eye on this mysterious, terrible, but charming dream.

And that's it. I hope this helped someone to understand better what these people tried to do with all this. Now, I'm gonna make myself something for dinner.

All of this seem to show the pattern of "This isn't the true story but just my interpretation of the story" I'd still like to know anything on Kikiyama regarding his original intention.

I kinda hope with all these interpretations on Yume Nikki at least one will be adapted into a animated form. I think the LN may be the best candidate given what I've read so far.

Thanks again for the translation, I'm a amateur and still studying at Japanese so I appreciate the work you do OP.

If they ever make an anime, I would like if they took the spirit of these, and decided to go with an original interpretation. The LN works really well because of how it's written, and the manga... well, the manga is rushed and quite messy sometimes, but it has its own charm.

About Kikiyama... it would be nice if he gave an interview too. I wouldn't want him to explain everything, but I would like to know what was the idea that drove him to start this, at least. But then again, maybe it's better as it is, and remaining a mystery forever.

Thanks for translating them.

> If they ever make an anime, I would like if they took the spirit of these, and decided to go with an original interpretation.
But who can make an interpretation that won't completely lose the feel the game had and will work as an anime?

Those are all part of the same gallery in Pixiv. Those are the only ones out there. As you can see there's no text either. I don't know if the guy released a full work in comiket or something, though, but in any case, that's all I have.

I would say that means he released it, but I don't really get those two last kanji, and neither rikaichan nor google are helping. Also, he doesn't say where, so I'm not sure.

It doesn't look great or anything, but it sure is incredible what the guy is doing alone in his free time.

Well the great part of Yume nikki threads in general is the fact that don't happen to often, I learned that mistake after making the threads on /vg/. But when ever I do see then I'll look for you.

This all reminds me of that .flow doujin I read awhile back.
>>
>>101216904

Yeah, I'm not sure either. Google translate says something about colleagues, but I think that's just machine translation goofing.
>>
>>101217149
Yeah, I really liked that one. I feel like there's a lot of people that don't know about it though, and as the translator, I kinda feel like it's my responsibility too to promote it somehow, but I'm not even sure how to do it.
I guess putting the link here should be something:

I've seen someone(probably you) mentioning that Sekai Oni reminds him of Yume Nikki. How exactly?
Judging by the premise and the first two chapters it looks like another grimdark series with violence and suffering everywhere. Am I wrong?

I wasn't the first to bring the similitude out, but it was the reason I picked it up. The look alikes are the lonely, young main character, the weird imagery, the dual worlds and a few other things. In all the descriptions I've made so far, I've tried to avoid spoilers though, so what happens during the prologue can be surprising. The biggest difference, though, is that Sekai Oni is a tale about real people that fight to survive and protect those they love.

Madhouse or Studio 4ºC.. or a collaboration. They do "trippy-pretentious" really well.

Since I'm a Yuasa-fag, I would want him to be director... though he wasn't the director in it, something like Cat Soup.

Or maybe something like Angel's Egg, only not always so dark.
