Are dubs ever any good?
If you really like steve blum
I assume this refers to English dubs. Yes, they are very rarely good.
Cowboy Bebop was god tier
I like the german dub for Samurai Champloo.
Mugen is voiced by the guy that's normally the dub voice for Christian Bale.
>the dub voice for christian bale
and see >>101153996
Baccanno dub is god tier.
Also; Black Lagoon, Cromartie High and FLCL
Blum is cool, but Roger sounds far classier in the sub.
cromartie high was great
We typically make syncs for our movies over here, for the people that aren't that good with english.
>cromartie high dub
It's the delivery. It just doesn't work when you read it.
>there are people on /a/ who think all dubs are terrible by default
Redline was good dubbed only because it allowed you to concentrate on 7 YEARS HAND DRAWN visuals and not have to read the bottom of the screen half the time.
>American accents in my chinese cartoons
Gun X Sword actually surprised me with how good its dub was. It's definitely one of the better ones out there.
They kinda are.
There's a sort of awkwardness when they read the lines. And most of the time the VAs are never as good as the ones the get for western shows. There are exceptions, like Blum, but even he falls victim to the awkward pacing when he's doing anime.
they are terrible by default
the special exception is usually where the original VA is unfitting (Goku in DBZ, Kintaro in Golden Boy)
going off the full cast, those 2 are also shit
there are no good english dubs
Yes there are
I can't even try out the dubs that are supposed to be "good". I tried watching black lagoon dubbed and had to switch back to subs simply because I've watched it before.
Golden Boy dub is better than the sub. This isn't opinion, it's fact.
That doesn't make any sense. If your problem was that you were already familiar with the show, surely watching it dubbed would be a refreshing change?
Also, Black Lagoon dub sorts out those awful, awful scenes of Revy speaking Engrish.
>Hey, fuckku yu yu cockusuckeru
oh so they're non-english dubs?
Man, I love those old timey New York accents.
>Also, Black Lagoon dub sorts out those awful, awful scenes of Revy speaking Engrish
Quit yurpling yer gurlbarl.
I dunno, I thought Redline's dub was pretty great compared to most. I really liked JP's VA and the little twists they did on lines I knew and bits they added to the script all fit.
It just feels terribly, terribly wrong
Black Lagoon's dub is far superior to the original, but that's a rare exception.
ghost stories English dub.
rarely, but yes.
Desert Punks dub was better than the original voicetrack for example.
Baccanos was bretty gud too.
But there supposed to be talking English. It's more authentic. The whole "Rock as a Japanese translator" in S2 is just confusing when they've been speaking Japanese the whole time.
Jap is best because no content is cut and you get the original script unlike dub which may remove shit.
Dub is good for puns or wordplay sometimes because they are much better listening to in your own language rather than reading (e.g. panty and stocking sperm scenes).
Dub also tends give characters accents based on the country they are from however this is usually pretty stupid considering the main characters are usually Japanese and they use regular voices for them and different ones for foreigners like Russians.
Dub is just a gimmick
>Jap is best because no content is cut and you get the original script unlike dub which may remove shit.
Content is worthless though when you can't understand it.
And I don't necessarily trust (fan)subbers more than a sync company. Despite that, most anime is not exactly that well written that a change really matters that much.
My only concern with dubbing is that the voice actors are often not really the best in the biz, or they wouldn't be dubbing anime.
Spice and Wolf dub was better. Lawrence isn't Lelouch, and sounds like a god damn adult, and Holo has that snarky, smug tone that suits her perfectly. It's worth losing Ami Koshimizu for the returns.
World's best dub coming through.
Also it's better than when subbed, heresy be damned.
The YGO GX dub ruined any idea that dubs could be good for me. I mean, YGO GX on its own is pretty bad but the dub, man. Terrible.
My problem with dubs is that the dialogue often sound awkward and unnatural because they have to match the lip-flaps.
jap language just uses too many vocals
Or they change the script to match it. Sometimes it's good, while other times it ends up being bad. Looking at you, Steins;Gate. I like Tatum as a VA, but he should never write a dub script again.
I've never heard a dub that i preferred over the sub. Besides the fact that there are the same 5 american voice actors working on every anime dub, the script always ends up different than the original, usually for the worse.
Plus it seems like females in dubs are incapable of sounding cute.
muh german dubs
Depends which ones, these ones are pretty neat.
Hellsing Ultimate has the best dub I've ever heard
I rarely watch dubs but Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon are two shows that I would recommend dub over sub.
I only started watching Baccano! recently though so I can't really say which I prefer for that show yet, but some of the accents they tried to give the characters annoyed me a bit in the dub (at least they tried though).
And although I know a lot of people on /a/ prefer it, I thought P&SwG dub was atrocious.
I think Big O and Baccano are the few exceptions to the rule. Maybe it has something to do with the setting.
>all the staff are putting him down
>one just suddenly calls him a "stupid faggot cocksucker"
You're forgetting desert punk. It's actually improved by the dub.
I don't get how so many people recommend to watch bebop dubbed. The VA's are so much worse in quality, especially spike. He sounds like a faggot from pokemon or beyblade in the dub, when you're supposed to think the character is cool.
Yes but who cares when the Japanese version will always be better.
>don't take this the wrong way
>never watch any dub
>watched dubbed DBZ as a child
>same voices in this clip
Yeah, I find that dubs are usually higher quality if they're not set in Japan and the cast doesn't have too many young girls in the cast. Bad news is that a lot of anime falls into that...
FMAB has a pretty good dub.
Some weird timings every now and then, but you'll have that.
FMA and Brotherhood
Yu Yu Hakusho
>stick your pinkie up my asshole please
Yes OP, and your pic is related. Especially Beck's English voice was perfect.
Every time he talked in the dub I kept thinking of Gene Starwind...
It ruined one of those characters for me, I'm just not sure which.
If you consider Big O to be a good dub, I question your tastes.
It has a few good VAs, but even they're tripped up by having to match the mouth flaps, and tons of the VAs just suck ass.
The only voice I like more in the dub than in japanese was Okabe.
>Tatum better than Miyano
FLCL,GitS, Keroro gunsou, and PSG all have good dubs. I actually try to watch them in the dub whenever I rewatch them because it's a little better than the sub.
The School Rumble dub was better than the Japanese version.
You're just being unjustifiably elitist you pretentious cunt.
In japanese his voice seemed too low.
I wish I had friends to watch this with.
The ending speech is possibly my favorite thing ever said in any anime.
They're* I'm sorry everyone.
It's foreshadowing a sad end I don't want the ride to end badly for S&W
I'm watching Mad Bull 34 right now, and I feel like the dub is the only way to watch it, given the setting and the humor used.
I haven't opened this video yet, but if it's what I think it is, those seconds after "stupid faggot cocksucker" make me bust a gut every single time.
Yup. Every time. Never fails.
nice work anon, are you the one who requested this pic to be made?
No, but I remember the thread and saved the pic when anon delivered.
I wonder how often I see the same people in different threads
Mah nigga. Desert Punk's dub gave the show more soul than the original had. Eric Vale did a hell of a good job, just comparing the original lines with the dub reveal how much stuff he put in.
Baccano! is also godlike, all those accents complete the series.
Some dubs are mostly bad (or at least subpar) but have one or two voices in them that are excellent.
Like the Anti-Spiral in TTGL.
>There's a sort of awkwardness when they read the lines. And most of the time the VAs are never as good as the ones the get for western shows.
This is why dubs tend to be bad, which is true. But they're not bad automatically.
There are only 5 people on /a/, all of them samefagging.
they are worse than english one except for nostalgia with digimon.
I wonder how Schwarzwald's dub would've been like if he dropped German like the original Japanese.
How have you been #4?
Come on Gamma, we agreed on Greek letters for this.
>How have you been #4
very nice #1 and how are you?
I offered to compromise with roman numerals.
I rewatched TTGL in Russian dub, just to see how it would sound.
Not as aweful as I thought but still shit compared to the original.
So which one is the leader?
We are one entity.
Slayers was really well done, but the Japanese voice cast was also excellent.
i watched code geass dubbed recently. JYB has no range, but I'll be damned if he isn't tailor-picked for some of his roles. he was an excellent Lelouch.
Stop chatting and get back to work Shitposter #1 and #2
Personally I wouldn't have gone with Yuri Lowenthal for Suzaku. Usually he's not too bad, but he just didn't really work for that particular role.
he did seem rather plain, maybe the "safe choice" at the time. which seems worse when he's paired with JYB,who is completely stealing the show.
You know, you could probably give a lot of shows good dubs if you picked the right VAs for the characters.
I'm curious about the Fate dubs. I don't think they'll be good, but I wanna hear it anyway.
And it would really help if cartoon VAs did dubs, but they're never gonna do that.
Funi seems to have done a pretty decent job with One Piece.
Why not, is the pay shit?
