I just lost 2TB worth of anniemays to a hard drive failure.
So many shows left unfinished.
>year of our lord Jesus Christ 2014
>watching part of a show then starting another
Do you have ADHD?
Are you sure it's the hard drive and not the enclosure?
woah op I was just on my way to go buy an external hard drive to put all my Chinese children's cartoons on. What do you recommend so nothing like that will ever happen to me?
How's it even possible to lose your hard drive outside of your own stupidity in this day and age.
Actually it is the enclosure but it's WD and they have their own auto-encryption shit.
make sure your enclosure doesn't encrypt your shit
You asked for it.
Time to buy annimays?
And that's why I stream
Dont kid yourself op, you weren't gonna watch them anyway.
But there's nothing in OP's post about having a never ending hunger for sucking dick?
This. I back everything up onto 2 separate HDs, and I have a 3rd ready if one of those dies and I suddenly need to make an emergency backup.
I don't remember what I had downloaded
At least 4 or 5 series I'd never watched
That sucks mate.
If it's SnK, you're not missing anything.
Redunancy is important. Just download it all again.
>trying to fit in
No one was even talking about snk
Well, whenever I can find a way to get active torrent magnet links for everything in an anidb list, I'm doing that.
It's almost foolproof.
External hard drives usually have second rate drives inside. You should buy an enclosure and a normal hard drive instead
The good news is I tested the drive itself and it's in working condition still.
I may try something retarded and buy another of the same model to swap chips and see if it works.
Then I'll just transfer the files to the new hard drive and use them both internally
Also >>101143772 is right this is why it happened. You roll on the cheap and in time you will weep
Let me guess, Seagate?
Nah man WD
You gotta read the thread
I have my animu spread across 3 separate external HDs, two of which are already fucking up somewhat and the last which seems okay but is a seagate and is bound to fuck up eventually.
I don't know why I won't do anything about it
>Year of our lord and savior 2014
You are being punished for your wicked ways, OP.
-Burn everything on BD
-Put everything on externals
-Upload everything on a hoster
Anime is saved forever
I have 3 WD Red NAS-rated 2TB drives together in a RAID5 and have set it up so I receive alerts whenever one starts to fail.
So far it's been holding up just fine.
Did WD suddenly start being bad at some point? A lot of anons seem to be having trouble with theirs all of a sudden, I've had mine for years and never had any issues.
He's a little girl. It's only natural he'd be interested in dick.
They have good and bad disks, most people buy the cheapest ones.
Like I said it's not the drive itself, it was the bridge
I have one 1TB external hd that I've bought so long ago I cant remember. Why doesnt it break?
You do know that they fail gradually, right? A flipped bit here or there and your video gets a few corrupt frames.
>1TB HD filled with backlog stops getting detected by computer
>No idea what happened, everything seems fine light indicator, motor running
>too lazy to get out
send help, muh anniemays
My hardrive is backed into multiple HHDs, that are backed into many more HDDs, that are backed in another PC in my bunker
I have more than 4TB of chinese cartoons and can barely survive with what's left on my main drive. I can't back all that up.
>not copying your anime and saving it on a flashdrive in case something like this happens
> he thinks flash drives are reliable
The actual answer is to save it in several places and have checksums so you can tell if a file is corrupted and needs to be restored from another backup.
i burn every watched anime on dvd-r. they're sitting safely in cd etuis untouched, so other than inevitable disk rot they'll be fine for several years
i plan to move all this shit to BDs to save space on shelf, once i'll buy BD writer
I've been burned way too many times by my DVDs being unreadable. I've had to burn the same thing three times before the disk came out OK. And that was on a TEAC drive.
try a linux livecd or some kind of rescue disk like hiren's, and troubleshoot
well the disk writers can eventually wear off, just like mine did. but grandma has one and never uses it so i guess i'll destroy hers too
OP, you're literally me.
How do you set up alerts like that?
Would have saved me a lot of shit.
I run CentOS6 and it's just an option for mdadm, see man mdadm.conf. You probably need to also configure the spam filter on your email.
There's also smartd to periodically check your drive for faults and email you.
You don't use it all the time?
>not just streaming and every time you watch a stream just recording your laptop screen with your phones camera
Download them again if you really need to.
It's not like they're worth shit.
You're literally a faggot.
How'd you know?
That sucks, but it's really only a month or 2 to download that much. If you can't remember some of the series you lost, you shouldn't worry about it. Chances are you weren't gonna watch them anyway if you can't even remember the names.
This is a chance to build a new, better backlog.
It's not a big deal as long as you're not canadian OP
>Keeping so much shit.
Just 1 TB is fine for everything, unless you have a hoarding disorder.
I wanted to quit porn so I purged all 4TB of my porn.
Bad mistake. You see, finding porn is no where as easy as getting anime. Anime is extremely easy to replace.
Some of that porn I spent weeks looking for, and even paid for the rare finds. Hell, some you can't even find anymore.
Harddrive failure, though I've NEVER had a HDD fail yet.
I had this 1tb external that had served me well for many years and I had just wiped it to restock on my animu and my dog fucking knocked it over while I was watching something. It was the best I had ever had. ;_;
You had 4tb of porn? I mean fuck man
I lost 4TB a couple of years ago. Now I have about 10TB of anime.
You didn't lose much.
Do you have 5 2tb drives?
Same thing happened to me, though I only had rare finds I was interested in.
All gone, never to be found again.
4 2TB drives, one internal 3TB drive, and two external 3TB drives.
Also 9TB in another computer which partially backs it all up.
More close to 6TB
When I say I had tons of porn, I mean it.
1TB worth of ExHentai doujins
Every illusion/teatime/etc 3D H-game
Various other siterips
>I only had rare finds I was interested in.
It depends. Usually what I did was get every single work from artists/circles from DLsite I was interested in. Trying to find their older stuff was always hard
I can recover one of my HDDs, but my main one is probably impossible. Now I'm back to a pathetic 50GB of porn
I always see stuff occasionally about people's harddrives failing
I've had an external for maybe 4-6ish years and now that is serving me well but there is always that possiblity
I mean do externals often fail and im just lucky or is it cause i mostly just download images rather than entire seasons to it
>I mean do externals often fail and im just lucky
No, they shouldn't fail at all. I still have a HDD from 1998 that's working in mint condition.
I have 12 HDDs in my storage and none have failed. The failure rates between ALL HDD's is within the 1~3% range, so I guess they got extremely unlucky.
Why do you have 12 stored HDDs?
By stored I mean I have them in their own case separate from my main tower, like a server.
I have 22TB total. I'm big into collecting games(emulation/modded ps3) so that takes up quite a bit of space. 5TB to be exact. I only have 70 PS3 games so it's not huge yet.
>2tb external is almost filled up
>built my rig back in march and ready to buy more hdds.
>want to just remove the goddamn external and slap it in my case
>too paranoid i'll fuck it up and refuse to try until i back it all up
i know this isn't /g/, but is it really as simple as everyone says by simply unscrewing/removing the external shell and throwing the hdd in my rig?
Can you post a screenshot with your collection? How much of it do you think you'll ever end up watching?
>-Upload everything on a hoster
If you mean file host service, bad idea. Most file hosts only stay around for 1 year before doing a massive purge.
Hell, it's almost impossible to find links that work for anything from 2011. It's completely unreliable.
Torrents are no good either because if it's unpopular, it'll lose seeders and then it's as good as dead. The only reliable method is yourself.
>having a backlog
At least once be honest and just say you are all borderline normalfags.
I stopped bothering to archive anime because I didn't really see a point; can always download it again. I delete a series, or uninstall a game when I'm finished. The only thing I keep are music and doujins.
> simply unscrewing/removing the external shell and throwing the hdd in my rig?
Yes it's that easy. You may have trouble opening the shell..and might perhaps some plastic shell parts may break but don't worry. The actual HDD is fine.
All you need is a sata III cable. Your rig should already have extra power cables for plugging into the HDD.
I've taken apart 3 external HDDS by now
And what the fuck do you think it is? All you will have to do later is uninstall old drivers and install the ones for the new parts.
There are some non-anime things mixed in here, because I haven't sorted it properly.
I generally group by franchise, so there may seem to be some duplicates because they have the same franchise name. So the Precure folder on one HDD has Futari wa and some others, while the other folder on my external drive has everything else.
When Godking Obama and the Megacorporations (feat. Lil' JIDF) regulate file sharing on the internet, us digital hoarders will be the ones who will be affected the least.
I have at least 1TB of a backlog saved up for Digital Armageddon.
How much have you watched?
what brand of drive OP?
>Old SSD crashes, replace it
>Same error, maybe it's my HDD
>Everything works fine, keep the HDD to maybe salvage later
>Day of salvage arrives
>Manage to break the connectors off of the fucking HDD
>Get a new HDD and replace everything
>Same error appears after a month
I'm getting tired of this shit.
Impressive. How do you find the time? How long have you been building up your collection?
So around half of it is backlog?
My WD died two days ago, nice timing OP.
I only had all my finished anime and all my film on it though, so it wasn't that bad. Half the film I had on it are available on Hulu plus anyway.
It's your Mobo drivers.
that's what I figured it was by now, but what do I do about it? I have to get into my OS to install mobo drivers right?
The piece of fucking shit actually stopped working right when I tried to install the drivers. My mouse stopped working and I couldn't navigate the driver program with keys.
Shit, I decided to move my music from my external to my computer's hard drive and a bunch of it is corrupted/inaccessible.
Then I found this thread.
>Lost 1 TB of anime
>Torrent 0 seed 4 peer
I'd say a lot more than half of what I have downloaded is in my backlog. Especially since there are some really huge franchises.
I don't actually watch that much anime. I spend more time looking for anime to download. I started actively building up my collection (including stuff I know I'll probably never watch, rather than things I wanted to see) about a year and a half ago.
>Lost 1 TB of anime
>Bakabt does New Year freeleech
alright cool, thanks man.
a healthy level of paranoia is always safe though, plus that's all my 2d garbage i've been collecting for a few years, so i like to be careful.
>using public trackers
>not using glorious private trackers that has everything seeded with seedboxes
>find the anime you want
>need free leech
It's free leech all year if you're not retarded.
Bakabt has permanent freeleech.
>Not having backups of your backups
This thread has convinced me to buy at least 5 more hard drives and download at least 4TB of anime for the apocalypse. Thank you all.
>being a consumer
>needing multiple backups for data you barely access
>needing multiple backups for a HDD that isnt even a server
It's good to see more people understand. The people that spout "l0l y save anything when its on da web!!" will be the first to complain when some new copyright law hits.
It's not like it's some huge investment/time waster. When you go to uni/work, just leave a few hundred torrents seeding
Magentic media degrade over time, though. Better keep them safe.
Same here, but I'm not going to spend that much. I'm thinking of doubling my space with another 2TB drive.
In the end I know it'll just get filled with backlog series I have no real interest in watching though.
I have this really large harddrive. It works great. Holds all my music, anime, movies, and everything. Cost nothing as well. I think they call it the internet.
Everything degrades over time.
By the time your data becomes inaccessible from "magnetic degradation", HDDs would probably already be obsolete or you'd have purchased x10 within that time span.
This anon knows what's up. From one day to the other, it might all be over. Then what? Watch your wallpaper or pay up? No, sir, I got what I got, I'mma playin' it safe.
back that up
