I loved the original ending too, and was only able to appreciate EOE's after a rewatch. And Anno stands by the original too, which I appreciate.

I think for the most part, people don't like the original ending because they generally cared more about the plot than the characters or themes or those weird boring subway scenes, and particularly didn't like Shinji. Now that's totally fine if they think that way, but I still loved them all.

But EoE is better than the last two episodes. It's not about the boom bang explosion bullshit you're spouting. EoE had still done its job tying up the character arcs as well. Not to mention the only character that really had a breakthrough in the last two episodes was Shinji while EoE had focused on several more characters.

>>
>>101069069
>EoE had still done its job tying up the character arcs as well. Not to mention the only character that really had a breakthrough in the last two episodes was Shinji while EoE had focused on several more characters.
But that's objectively wrong, anon. The final two episodes focused on Shinji, Rei, Asuka, and Misato. In the end, they spend the most time on Shinji, but that's to be expected given that he's the impetus and MC of the series. He's also given far more time in EoE.

And EoE does a terrible job of character resolution. Asuka's mother issues are resolved by random divine revelation (and don't get me started on that Unit 02/Asuka's mother's soul BS), Shinji's issues are resolved by divine revelation from Unit 01/his mother, Rei's issues are resolved by the fact that she's really an aspect of Shinji along with Kaworu, and Misato's resolved merely by the fact that they kill her off.

EoE's terrible, and fails to resolve anything other than edgy religious symbolism that so many Evafags latch onto.

Anno clearly made NGE as a middle finger to everyone in his life.
His superiours, his co workers, his fans, it was all to give them a screw you.

While he was successful in the usual way a depressed artist gives a subtle tone of disapproval:
Generally disgusting visuals (see how everything is biomechanical), giving asshole personalities to your characters, going along with uniformed higher ups rather than objecting (NGE was originally in a kids time slot).

What Anno unintentionally made was in fact something very good. By putting forth so much hate, cynicism, anger and overall malicious disposition to his work, he created something truly horrible to the point where it becomes good.
What I mean is despite putting forth so much effort to an elaborate "fuck you", he still put forth all that effort to his series. And with that much care to detail and work, he wound up making something more.

Not to say the 2deep4u faggots aren't wrong, but to say NGE is shit is also wrong.
Anno made some truly wretched characters, so well written in how horrible they are that they take on an entirely different character than he intended.

By attempting to twist the audiences own desires into subversions, he wound up becoming original.
>>
>>101069377

But Rei, Asuka, and Misato's problems were barely resolved, and were moreso there to urge Shinji to accept himself near the end.

EoE triples that, albeit quite quickly. Asuka finally learned that her mother did love her and at least died with that knowledge with her mom on her side, resolving her problems. I don't see why the divine revelation is a bad thing if it helped in their development and solutions.

Yeah, Misato died, but what did episodes 25/26 do that EoE didn't that ultimately made it better? In both, Misato's still trying to encourage Shinji to make a stand.

Shinji's solution was fine as well. He knew Instrumentality wasn't the path humanity should have taken, and he has at least accepted that he needs others in his life. He even says that his loved ones were the ones he wished to protect anyway, which is why he returned to Earth. He also accepted the task to try to find where his happiness lies, even if he is still searching.

Rei proved she was no longer Gendo's "doll" and defied Gendo to grant Shinji's wish.

You are overreacting a lot there, man. Anno vomited his own psychoanalisis for his depression on the script. Just that, but being in what should be a kids show it ends up being pretty tough.
A lot of shit shinji deals with felt a lot closer after I moved out of my parent's house and had to deal with new people in a new place. A lot of Misato's shit felt diferent after my dad died and I realized I had never dealt with any of the shit, both good or bad, around our relation ship.
Eva is sort of basic if you compare it with high brow stuff, but the emotional process that Anno dropped in it make it an interesting and complex anime.

At least for me, that is.
>>
>>101069344
I'm not entirely sure whether we can say that the TV ending signifies Shinji accepting instrumentality. They made a huge deal earlier about how necessary other people are and how you might not even exists without others. So if at the end everybody is really gone for good and nobody is an individual anymore, it would go against everything that had been said before.

>>101069508
NGE may be cynical as hell but I always found the overall message really positive. Life may suck but is still very much worth living and having all these people around.
>>
>>101069931
>I don't see why the divine revelation is a bad thing if it helped in their development and solutions.
Because it's lazy writing to just have "stuff happens" without any further need to explain why or how.
>>
>>101069931
To be fair, I don't feel like any of the characters' problems are fully resolved in either ending, and I think an ending that did would be some combination of impossible and unwanted. I feel that the original ending tackles them in a better way than EoE, which both feels like it twists the bad NGE plot to try and resolve the characterization, and tries to tie up all the loose ends by having the characters die.

As an NGE AOAT fan, I HATE the plot of NGE. In fact, I hate mecha anime in general. NGE has two things going for it: arguably some of the best characters of all time, and an extremely interesting setting. I felt like the original ending did far more for those two aspects than EoE, which tried shoring the plot first and foremost.
>>
>>101069931
Dude, shinji accepts instrumentality and becomes part of it. Loosing yourself is the "congratulatios" end.

Divine explanation is bad because it stops the character growth. It's true that 25/26 spoon feed a lotof crap, but that's how it is when you discuss your feelings with a wall that bounces back your own thoughts, the very basis of the freudian analysis. And at the end the characters are working their issues instead of finding something the makes everything right just because it's there. It's a bitch to take away your own growth.

Actually, both endings look a lot happier than they really are. Azuka and shinji never dealtwith any of their shit in EoE, they were forced into something that won't be sustained.
If only they had left Yui to do her thing and rule the universe...
>>
>>101070098

But he is in an open world shared by all the other parts of the people close to him. Before the movies that was the full reason of instrumentality, making humanity one through forced evolution.

>>

If the plot explains that power oflove is a thing, would it be less of a shitty cliche to use to end your story?
>>
>>101070295
It was explained how the revelation could happen, but it doesn't change that fact that it suddenly "just happened" at a really convenient point and ceased any real development aside from "Oh I see the light now". It takes what would normally be a long and arduous deliberation and forces it all to occur in a split second with no actual narrative aside from hindsight.
>>
>>101067362
Why do people still think Eva had religious symbolism. It wasn't symbolism it was imagery. The difference is that imagery is just an image with many different functions and symbolism is an object that represents an abstract idea. The imagery wasn't symbolic but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. It added a sense of mystery, fear, and emotional weight to the story while also tying into ideas and a basic human psyche present in all of us while giving it a more concrete shape by referencing actual religious things. It wasn't a theological statement but more of a stylistic choice. And it's also fucking cool.
>>
>>101069979
I was going to say you seemed to miss my point.

>>101070052
I can't say it without sounding like a pretentious faggot, but the reason I think that way of NGE is because I've been there.

Specifically making what I thought would be something wretched or foul as art or an assignment, only for people to eagerly ask for more.

Ultimately I never knew/know who's at fault in the situation. The recipient for thinking it's something "deep" or has a lot of meaning to it.
Or the artist who is so stuck in their cynicism they think the genuinely good work they've built is just shit and the person is an idiot for liking this thing you shat out.

>>101070098
It's a BIT positive.
Like life when you're depressed.

As stated above when I say I speak from experience.

Anno may have it better off than I do, I've had to deal with soul crushing emptiness of depression for as long as I can remember now.
I'm not talking "Oh everything sucks it's so sad" I'm talking
being asked
>Hey Anon, how's it going
And wanting to just reply
>Dead.
and nothing more, but actually replying
>Fine.

Like, you go beyond feeling bad, or happy, or anything really, and just accept this cold emptiness inside of you that sucks away any desire to do anything you love.

I mean, shit I love working on my art and writing.
Know when the last time I finished a sketch of all things was?

This coming from someone who used to be able to crank out at least 3 a day.

NGE isn't like GL where Simon has a cause, a true purpose of protecting those he loves, and a rad way to do it.

NGE is about accepting the bitter loneliness of life and laying down like the little bitch you are.

>It's a bitch to take away your own growth.
I see your point. Shinji's development may have been reversed in EoE, but he seems to have gotten better near the end. Nerv getting invaded, Misato getting shot, and seeing a giant naked Rei sounds like some scary shit to deal with so I can at least tolerate his fear.

Even if Shinji is the main character, it doesn't excuse the lack of resolve the others had gotten in the last two episodes.
I already explained how Asuka and Shinji dealt with their problems in my other post. Not that their resolutions are entirely complete, though. I said Asuka had gotten herself together more than Shinji, but that may just be due to her lack of screen time compared to him.

No one gives a shit how depressed you are, I'm sure there are plenty of people here living with depression every single day, but they don't vomit up a whiny paragraph trying to justify their idiotic opinions with it.

NGE's plot is the whole mess surrounding the angels, the dead sea scrolls, and the various characters trying to use them to attain instrumentality/various other ends. It also has to do with the episodic "mechas fighting monsters". Regardless, neither is really fleshed upon well enough to come to any kind of real conclusion, so I like the original ending's style of going "fuck it, we're just going to sit the characters down for a chat and branch into hypotheticals". I feel it's more true to the fact that NGE could have a completely different plot, or even a slightly different setting, but it's the characters and their relationships that make the series what it is.

Also to add to my post, that doesn't mean that there weren't actual symbolism in the story it's just that most of it had nothing to do with religion. Stuff like Shinji's cassette player or Gendo's glasses or Misato's cross are actual symbols. And also not all symbolism is "deep".

Just that I think Anno deliberately wrote Asuka to be a shallow vapid cunt, and people who go "Asuka is mai waifu" don't realize you aren't supposed to like her.
You know the whole reasoning behind Asuka already, fucking everyone does.
How she covers up her own weakness through projection.

She's essentially the real personality later characters like Kamina are based on.

You don't seem to understand.

Asuka is a shallow cunt.
Shinji is a bitter asshole.
Rei is a numb sociopath
Misato is an repressed alcoholic
Kaji is a fatalistic romantic.
Gendo is a desperate egotist.

Anno wrote humans... Even Gendo's right hand man is an inert sycophant.

You aren't supposed to like Asuka because you aren't supposed to like anyone when they're at their worst.

Could you imagine discussing archaeology with an young Gendo? How about sharing a beer with a far less jaded Misato?

A warm embrace, a genuine smile, a kind look... This is the reason we share our affection with others.

We are all broken, with sharp edges and ugly cracks, but there remains something in the whole worth repairing and saving.

EVA characters are all horrible people who could live far better lives if they shared their fears, experiences and passions. Everyone's got their coping mechanism, and all of them are just as destructive to themselves and others as the last.

The Hedgehog's dilemma isn't just a dumb analogy for character drama, it's a rule of human socialization.

>This is roughly the world-view for Neon Genesis Evangelion. This is a world-view drenched in a vision of pessimism. A world-view where the story starts only after any traces of optimism have been removed.

>And in that world, a 14-year-old boy shrinks from human contact. And he tries to live in a closed world where his behaviour dooms him, and he has abandoned the attempt to understand himself. A cowardly young man who feels that his father has abandoned him, and so he has convinced himself that he is a completely unnecessary person, so much so that he cannot even commit suicide.

>And there is a 29-year-old woman who lives life so lightly as to barely allow the possibility of a human touch. She protects herself by having surface level relationships, and running away. Both are extremely afraid of being hurt. Both are unsuitable-lacking the positive attitude-for what people call heroes of an adventure. But in any case, they are the heroes of this story.

>They say, "To live is to change." I started this production with the wish that once the production complete, the world, and the heroes would change. That was my "true" desire. I tried to include everything of myself in Neon Genesis Evangelion-myself, a broken man who could do nothing for four years. A man who ran away for four years, one who was simply not dead. Then one thought. "You can't run away," came to me, and I restarted this production. It is a production where my only thought was to burn my feelings into film.

You can share, you can dig, you can cut as far as you can, but there's a point where the boundary cannot be crossed. You have shared everything... but what cannot be expressed or translated to another.

It doesn't need to be crazy... It could be a fetish or a odd line of thought.

It could be thoughts of genocide, flights of egoistic godhood, fantasies of blood and steel.

There is a point where the world and you are separate, an absolute territory if you don't mind the wordplay.

Sometimes you aren't even willing to admit to yourself that there's something beneath, but it's there, and you will probably take it to your grave.

An issue that is in the same vain of not understanding that people have a "hidden deepness" to themselves is the misunderstanding that this seemingly mysterious notion is much "deeper" than it really is.
I don't really care for your poetic nonsense about how you can't "truly understand" someone, nor do I think it's really relevant to the subject of reciprocation and the bearing of a facade towards others, nor do I really think it's an issue in human interaction.
No shit we have traits of ourselves that we knowingly and unknowingly do not present to others, including traits we ourselves don't recognize. We do, to an extent, play ourselves off to be different than how we "truly" are, in effect. But taking this notion and asserting "we never can reciprocate" based off of it is complete nonsense, and spits in the face of what reciprocation itself is.

But that's just it.

Perfection is unachievable. She/he will never love you the same way you love him/her.

But if you both run for the goal, you have one of the most beautiful scenarios in the universe: S/he'll never catch you any more than you can catch him/her... But holy hell what a game.

Nobody ever spouted any nonsense such as "perfection". We're talking about base level reciprocation here which you, hopefully as a bit of hyperbole, completely denied.

holy shit captcha stop fucking changing the moment I hit submit I swear to god

You make a good point.
If a majority of the posts on 4chan didn't have "I" in them.

It's because you don't fucking know anything about the people you're speaking to, so of course you naturally go for "I" over "you"

What, is that half assed point some attempt to say "Get on topic"?

Okay.
NGE Is shit.
Objective fact.

This thread has become incomprehensible retardation.

And stop blogging about your life.

It's amazing how quickly this thread went to shit.

Can we talk about Asuka again?

Think about it, without the budget-friendly end the death threats, the graffitis etc wouldn't have happened and EoE would have been completely different, if it even happened
>>
>>101073567
The point was that you've spent more time attempting to garner some nonsensical validation in this thread than you have actually discussing the show. All you've done is use the subject of Eva as a tool to talk about yourself and how it impacts your life and how your life impacts your view of it, all the while giving us this nonsensical facade of how beaten by life you are and how unfeeling it's made you when I doubt even you actually believe that about yourself, you just enjoy the idea of it because it affords you the ability to come on here and gain validation through idiots like me who keep responding to you.
tl;dr: Put on a trip so I can filter you or discuss this stupid children's cartoon.
>>
>>101073752
Or 25 and 26 would have been more or less EoE.

But yeah, I'm more or less happy with the way it turned out
>>
I like EoE more because the imagery is done really well.
>>
>>101073011
Well, the [bloat] version is just that. It's bloated. And it lacks the English audio.

I'm not putting on a trip.

If what I had to say truly had no weight then you'd have just ignored it like shitposting.

Or are you, mad?

I can at least leave knowing I unintentionally shit up a thread and ruined your time spent in it.

Enjoy your shitty anime faggot.

You're kind of missing the point of EoE. EoE is as much an overwhelming experience for Shinji as it is for the audience. The film seems to portray Shinji's growth as a character but the real purpose is for the audience to grow as people. This is most apparent when the film cuts away from the story completely and shows live action shots of people on the streets and in the theater. The film is meant to be a exercise into our minds as well as journey for Shinji. The film intentionally ends with nothing truly being "resolved" because to do so would betray the films purpose. The film doesn't give anyone a "happy end" because that's not how reality works. Shinji still has problems as seen when he tries to strangle Asuka at the beach. But the point is that he can finally start to move forward even if the path is a painful one.

>pretty much no anime on the planet has that as a ratio.

Pretty much every single anime ever made now has that aspect ratio.

Think you meant the 1600x900 resolution.

You're correct on your point that it's an external screenshot and OP is watching it stretched to 16:9 on his screen though.

Yes, we exist. The thing is, though, it's less about flat-out not realising what the girl wants and more your crushing lack of self-esteem subconciously convincing you she doesn't want what you think she wants.
