Setsuko's death stroke me really hard when I first watched it. You usually expect main characters to have dramatic, meaningful deaths.

Hers was just "she never woke up". So harsh and cold. Got me feeling like shit for the rest of the movie.
>>
>>100949336
But why?
>>
movie was great, but only a middle rank ghibli
>>
From what I've heard, the author of the book actually did cause the death of his sister during WWII. He wrote this story out of sheer guilt.

The movie was a commentary on the shittiness of Japanese youth at the time in the bubble economy, with fireflies being the central metaphor. The temporary nature of fireflies as creatures is the temporary prosperence of the japanese economy (shown when comparisons are drawn between citylights and fireflies). And how one must value their privelidges while acknowledging their temporary nature, and how shit went down in times besides your own so shut the fuck up and respect your elders.

This is a movie based off the authors experiences from what I recall

Kinds in real life are hot-headed and foolish, you'd think you would make the right decision in that situation when you were ten years old, but that's only hindsight speaking. People in real life are foolish, prideful, and that's why shit like this tends to be more true in a way. As I recall the only scene really made up was the part where he died at the end, as that's only something he kind of wished would happen after what he had done.
>>

>>
>>100949198
>Some critics have viewed Grave of the Fireflies as an anti-war film due to the graphic and emotional depiction of the pernicious repercussions of war on a society, and the individuals therein. The film focuses its attention almost entirely on the personal tragedies that war gives rise to, rather than seeking to glamorize it as a heroic struggle between competing ideologies. It emphasizes that war is society's failure to perform its most important duty to protect its own people.[8]

>However, director Takahata repeatedly denied that the film was an anti-war anime. In his own words, "[The film] is not at all an anti-war anime and contains absolutely no such message." Instead, Takahata had intended to convey an image of the brother and sister living a failed life due to isolation from society and invoke sympathy particularly in people in their teens and twenties, whom he felt needed to straighten up and respect their elders for the pain and suffering they had experienced during arguably the darkest point in Japan's history

I wonder if the people realize that the book was basically a self-loathing 'I wish this actually happened' biography of the author? he was an overly prideful shit and caused the death of his sister.

The message is what comes across and not what was intended.
Art is communication between creator and observer, if the intended and the de facto message differs, the artist dun goofd.

And lets be honest thats the case like 90% of the time.

Doesn't mean he goofed, rather all art becomes something else the second the creator releases it.

That's just a natural part of the process. No matter what you say you can't help how other people might view your works, so you can just hope they'll see it for something while drawing their own conclusions, and maybe if you're lucky someone will see it similar to the original intent as well.

Americans exterminated a whole ethnicity, Britbongs brought China to its lowest point by forcing them to buy fuckton of opium from India, where it was produced en masse and this destroyed Indian economy and agricolture.
French sent a fuckton of Americans to die on their frontlines during WWI because they couldn't repel the Germans, and even then they were losing the war. German leaders let their country starve during WWI because of the British blockade. They thought they would win the war but on their country people were dying because they sent all farmers to war. Also Hitler and the holocaust. Stalin starved millions of russians to industrialize the country, killing as many people as Nazi Germany did. Japan attacked on Manchuria, had chinese labor camps where they used chinese civilians as guinea pigs. Dutch people massacred niggers in south africa. Everyone did shit, all the assblasted 'muricans still clinging on Pearl Harbor are idiots, they did even worse shit in Vietnam and it wasn't their fucking business.

It was our fault to send undertrained soldiers that didn't even know how to fight in a trench, but the French strategy was "send as many people as we can to the frontlines and slow down the Germans while they starve, hopefully they'll surrender". France was losing the war, even when it ended they had the Germans several miles up their ass.

The submarine surfaced amid the debris field and after a brief exchange of gunfire with the ship's defensive armament, collected the survivors on the submarine's deck. Shortly after the freighter had sunk, the merchantman's crew and passengers, totalling 97, were tied together and forced to run a gantlet of Japanese sailors, during which they were slashed with samurai swords and beaten with monkey wrenches and sledgehammers before being shot, then kicked into the water. Six men managed to survive and found a life raft. They were later rescued by the Liberty ship SS James O. Wilder.

German atrocities were much worse, but nowadays most people don't really harbor any hatred towards them.

Not to mention that we killed numerous civilians during WW2. Largest death toll were the fire bombings of Dresden. 150,000 people. They weren't even a point of strategic interest.

There was no good in that war. Only "lesser" evils, if you want to call it that, but I wouldn't justify it that way.
>>
>>100957017

I actually wish we never helped France during WWI. Without our support they would have never won the war since Germany was pretty close to Paris and to victory when they had to sign the armistice because they didn't had food. Without the US they would have lost before the starvation became critical. Brits would have retreated from war (because let's be honest, Brits are fucking garbage. they were actually siding with Hitler before WWII started, they just turned their back to them because Nazis decided to share Poland with Russians and Brits got buttmad that they wouldn't get a slice of the pie. many british people hated jews and wanted them to be exterminated too, because they thought it was an inferior race. they even started the whole eugenic stuff along with the french), US was in neutral-good terms with Germans. Also Russians had very close relationships with Germans because the Kaiser and the Tsar were cousins or something. They didn't even want to fight each other during WWI. Communism would have been stopped probably if Germany would have helped them to deal with the revolution.

europe would have been eventually conquered by Germany and Austro-hungarian empire. Nazism would have never happened (without losing WWI and the conditions of the treaty of Paris Hitler would have never had the reasons to even start it, and he wouldn't have been butthurt. he would have remained a painter).

tl;dr if we didn't help those fucking French faggots now Europe and the world would probably be better places, even if we all spoke english and german. And the economy wouldn't be shit. Also Japan would probably be part of USA.

Japs occupied my mom's country and executed thousands of people who they suspected of being anti-Japanese.
Am I supposed to feel hatred towards them? I'm not really sure.

Hah. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or pertaining to those swag-strong half-flips.

>The Germans are actually sincere in their apologizes
I'd like to see the Germans not apologize when they were in the hands of both the US and the Soviets.
Japan's problem on the subject today lies in the fact that their politicians are retarded (like practically all politicians) but on top of that are also cowards who cannot bear to find any fault with their heritage.
On the other hand, this hard set stance on the subject is aggravated by China going fullretard on the issue and fabricating more propaganda than the japanese are accused of doing. The Japanese feel like they'll have given in to China's attitude if they become softer on the issue, and the collective memory is still confused and pained about all that happened in the war, so they don't want that.

You know as a fellow SEA monkeys the thing that annoy me with WWII and Japs fuckery is that people can't fucking separate love of Japs made entertainment vs the shit that Japs do on WWII.

I mean fuck you could love Anime and Japs people and hate Japs government and their imperial past you know? But nooo most people in real life and on /a/ take fucking personal offense when glorious japan is insulted, fucking weebs.
>>
>>100958026
ikr. I've been in japan and the people are awesome, I love the animation but hate what they were during WWII, but in my country everyone hates them regardless because of their past events

I'm korean
>>
>>100958026
Not really. I think that most people on /a/ can differentiate between the Japan of today and the Japan of WWII. The ones who can't are mostly from /pol/ anyway.
>>
>>100958026
I suck in history tbh. I couldn't even remember who killed who in my history 1, so I couldn't really give a fuck who did what in the world war II.

But I think this thread is more of "riding murica's glory for winning" than "hating the nips". The former would inevitably bring up the topic though so here we are.

yeah? chinese people hate japs too. my mother and father didn't want me to go to japan because they think they are filthy and still dangerous
my grandmother don't even know I went there or she would have disowned me
>>
>>100958270
I can't speak for the public opinion, but Korea and Japan as nations are not on very friendly terms with each other.
I've met some Koreans who told me that they don't hate the Japs of today but hate their history.
Even though Germany also committed huge atrocities during the war, they at least owned up for their crimes and the key leaders at least were punished in the Nuremburg trials. I suspect that the emnity towards Japan is because they never acknowledged or made any attempt to make amends for their behavior. They want to put their past behind them, but in a way that involves just pretending it was all good rather than by atoning.
>>
>>100958520
this, also many koreans hate japs because of some vocal minorities in japan that are very hateful toward us. you know that japanese nationalist group that became famous in the west for that "white piggu go home"? they actually don't give a fuck about whites or even blacks since japan is getting a big fill of caucasian and black immigrates, especially in these last years, but they are still intolerant against koreans and chinese. that group is actually a vocal minority that hates koreans with passion and was founded for this reason.

How?

< Also, post war Japan had this holy man as well, plus he's still alive.

Anyway, what was up with Russia's roll in WW2 teaming up with the US & UK seeing that at the time?, the US & USSR were arch ememys during that time, why did they team up to stop the axis.
>>
>>100959170
because the russians actually wanted the war to end, and the only reason they were in war was because of the Nazis that declared first. Lenin's Russia and Stalin's Russia were anti-war. The abolition of any kind of war was in their communist constitution, believe it or not, they wished for a world where war wasn't needed. That's why they tried so hard to stay neutral with the Nazis, until Hitler declared war. And they also only won the first assault because Hitler pulled a Napoleon and invaded during winter, and Russians were lucky that it was a particularly harsh winter that year. They then re-organized while the Nazis were busy fighting against the allied forces and didn't put any pressure on them, and attacked back to finish the war as soon as possible. If it wasn't for that winter and if Rommel would have been at the lead of the attack then Russia would have fallen.
>>
>>100959170
The US and USSR were not arch enemies at the time of WW2. American industrialists and all were completely opposed to the USSR and were instrumental in Nazi Germany leaping ahead thanks to their economic aid, but the official policy was not the one in the post-war world.

Welcome to art, newfag, where every piece is meant to have a meaning but it conveys something different.
Now fuck off to watch american television.

I hope all of you retarded people and trolls die, what a shitty thread.

>Welcome to art
>but it conveys something different

No.

There is a meaning a "piece of art" is trying to convey, and there people who misinterpret it.
