Do you motherfuckers like Utena?
>being this faggot
utena a shit
>Miki calling others a faggot
dat piano instructor
Yes, especially the Black Rose and Outori Akio arcs.
Yuri Bear PV when?
Nanami is so mooe.
Yes but everyone minus best girl and mai daughteru were fucking sluts.
Pic related mai daughteru.
>relegated to a total gag character in the movie
I loved the Black Rose arc, especially once I finished the show and realized the similarities between Utena and Mikage
>implying she isn't a total gag character in the anime
anyone want a bite?
EoE makes perfect sense compared to that fucking movie
What the hell did I watch?
I liked how Utena has fallen from heroine into unknown girl who happned to study in the academy. Nice touch. Overall the more I read hypothesis the more confused I am.
true gentleman coming through
Here is real question: A-ko, B-ko or C-ko?
No she had some fucking character whenever the episodes had a duel with her.
Really? I thought it explained all the main plotlines and themes of the story really simply, which surprised me.
The Redline race scene is really the only strange part, but it's just Ikuhara using another metaphor for growing up
She at least got some development. I really don't see why certain important characters were ignored completely or just bystanders, while new elements were shoehorned into the other characters. Touga was not a rape victim in the TV series, it seemed like drama for the sake of drama.
C-ko is the only correct opinion.
Ikuni pandering to himself. He essentially admits it in the commentary.
He could do whatever he wanted with the movie as opposed to the show (where the mangaka kept saying no) so he just went all out
This. It was boring and repetitive as hell. I couldn't continue after aboiut half-way and am glad I didn't given some of the discussion I've read since.
Even if she is mostly a joke character I still like her a lot.
She's really sexy with her hair down.
That's a shame
>Touga was not a rape victim in the TV series
>15 years old
Like the series.
Love the movie.
If she wasn't a slut, where did the egg come from?
Did the BD get subs?
Nigga she turned into a car went through a car wash in space. People were doing drugs.
ZETTAI UNMEI MOKUSHIROKU
Fucking great memories.
>not learning how to rip and edit subs
Ohtori is a purgatory of childishness
Dropped this shit when she ntrd himamiya with that nigger still mad.
Man Chiho Saito sounds like she was a fucking buzzkill on that project. Her art is nice enough, but personality-wise she was clearly way too conventional to be working with people like Be-Papas on a project like that show, and it's probably her fault that the yuri romance wasn't more explicit.
She draws a lovely Utena and Anthy though so it's hard to be too mad at her.
>people who are in love for real would not be chasing after the image of a prince.
Even if he has a rockin' sports car?
If you're gonna play it like that then you have to remember that he was technically the one being "NTRed". The two of them had been doing it for god knows how many decades/hundreds of years before Utena came along.
>STOP STOP STOP STOP
>YOU WILL DIE
It's down at the moment; what were they saying? Is it theories as to how that could be the case in the TV show too?
Why did you just tell us that story."
If I have to choose one favorite moment in Utena it's this one.
Nanami's reaction to the story about the boy who drowned just makes me tear up everytime.
Fuck off utena was pure.
Not enough hair down Nanami.
Here you go
Not a purgatory of adolescence?
nanami was probably the best non main character and one of the best overall.
Would she win a duel with Kiryuuin Satsuki?
I LOVE IT
Please, keep your KlK shit at bay.
Are you aiming to deny the obvious influence of Utena on the costume design in KLK?
KlK had a straight Utena reference with Nemuro Hall. But then again I think the protagonist in Walkure Romanze was based off of Utena or something but that doesn't it merits discussion.
The settings seem to be influenced aswell to some extent. It's in the palette of influences at least.
>yuri romance wasn't more explicit.
Maybe that's why I never felt Utena and Anthy were romantically in love when watching the TV series. I felt like they were just friends who wanted to protect one another.
The movie actually feels like a romance between them.
You must have anti Yuri goggles on or something.
I dunno, I just didn't get any romance yuri vibe from them through out the series.
Maybe if I rewatch it I'd noticed new things.
Oscar, is that you?
Utena is one of the very best TV anime taken from a film perspective, the direction and cinematography is superb from that perspective along with EVA.
Sweet, thank you.
Still waiting for that long promised Anno x Ikuhara collaboration anime.
Always had a soft spot for Utena as a show. every time you watch it, you find yourself noticing more and more.
Also one of the few shows where, knowing how it ends, the second viewing gives you a completely different sort of impression.
whole stupid thing is just a metaphor for losing one's virginity
What do you mean metaphor?
She litteraly loses it.
Did Tarantino take the kill bill outfit from this?
That entire scene about the poison was just them confessing their love for eachother.
It was gay as fuck
Only Utena could be Stock Footage: The Animated Series and still be completely awesome.
>Implying anime and manga aren't two completely different beasts with only the characters being vaguely related
"She is sexy" does not mean "I want to have sex with her", right now.
>actually lost her virginity
I liked how she paralleled Anthy in a lot of ways. And then at the end said Fuck it to everything going on
I'm sure Anthy loved pulling all that shit on her the whole series
I like how Gucci Mane sampled the OP in one of his songs
I finished it a few days ago, and thinking back and remembering everything makes me like it more and more.
It needs to happen
>dat NA NA, NANA NA NA version in the movie
I enjoyed it, except for one thing: I probably missed something obvious like a dumbass, but what was the point of the Black Rose Duelists/Mikage arc? That really felt like it could have been cut without losing anything.
I liked it because it fleshed out all the characters more and shows that Utena's not the center of everything and is pretty naive. It's also a good segway to the third arc (in setting up the darker introspective tone and introducing Akio), and Mikage's a good character and shows the time-stopping power of everyone's personal delusions in the school and how Akio manipulates people with them. Mikage also serves as a mirror to Utena in many ways too.
You might say "oh but everyone forgot what happened in the end anyways", well, the arc also shows what happens to people who leave the school
Granted, it does go on too long, but it did touch upon minor characters that otherwise would never have been given any time, so I think it's worth it in the end.
I think these put it well
http://pastebin.com/CLmhGgSy (4chan thinks theyre spam)
What a BITCH
Dude, you have to tell us what song. Don't leave us hanging like that.
Nice, thanks for those links.
Oh also, Ikuhara on why he made the Black Rose arc:
>I saw a certain horror movie when I was in middle school. There was a secret mortuary in an underground chamber, and the dead were electronically transmitted to the "other world," where they were forced into slavery. The movie’s story was utterly absurd, but the division of the world into opposite poles of “living” and “dead” felt real to me somehow. Our world has been spoken of in bipolar fashion for ages.
>In my student days, there was a popular book that compared the "affluent" with the "non-affluent," and sorted everything into categories called "loaded" and "broke...". Years later, the phrase "the winning side" was popular in the media. I thought it was horrid. And sure enough, people started using the opposite phrase "the losing side" as a masochistic joke. I still couldn’t laugh, though.
>One day, a girl I saw on TV said, "There are only two types of people in this world: the ones who are chosen and the ones who aren’t chosen." That gave me a start. "To not be chosen is to die," said the girl. I decided to try my hand at that. The Black Rose arc.
I think Wakaba's story was pretty much that
Also image is another thing
Wikipedia says it's "Street Niggaz" but I can't hear it
Which student council member had it the worst?
>"There are only two types of people in this world: the ones who are chosen and the ones who aren’t chosen." That gave me a start. "To not be chosen is to die," said the girl.
Sounds like this quote affluence Penguindrum as well as Himari says the same quote almost word to word in episode 20.
Also, this Ikuhara commentary explains everything about Mikage (and his relation to the ending):
And this one is just about the ending:
He also wrote this book
>In the future humanity is divided into gene majors, stronger and more intelligent, and gene minors.
Juri definitely, Manami was put through the ringer but I think she came out more mature by the end.
This is also a bunch of commentary and things by the staff for anyone interested
Yeha, I need to rewatch it someday. There really is lots of foreshadowing although it all seems indecipherable on first watch, because the show just doesn't give a shit about explaining things outright.
But that's not movie!Touga
GOUGAI GOUGAI GOUGAI
[spoiller]>covered in a white cloth when he first appears in the movie[/spoiler:lit]
[/spoiler:lit]>because he's DEAAAD[/spoiler:lit]
So the cowbell episode was about breast development and the egg episode was about menstruation.
What was the curry episode about?
Yes, I love it and I'm planning in rewatching soon.
The egg episode was obviously about nanami being a space alien.
Is there actuall good art of her? It's sad that she was my favorite character and there is no such thing as good fanart of her.
Only with other people as far as I can tell
How is the movie? i'm almost done with the series and want to know what to expect without spoiling anything.
The movie is next level
It's a slightly AU retelling with some changes and the craziest third act ever. Visuals are fantastic. It's not a sequel or anything of the sort though. Think of it as a little bonus extra Utena for finishing the show.
Really? there is quite a bit out there I thought.
16 in the movie
Utena influenced a lot of anime
She's a cow in the movie.
So I don't have a handy screenshot, as it was a couple years ago I watched.
So, right before the final arc, in fact, setting it all off, Akio takes Utena on a date. Where he fucks her.
But the aftermath of this we see Utena muttering her grocery list for the next day to make lunch for Anthy.
Here is, in the BEST possible reading of that scene, a situation where an older man pressured a young girl into sex, and the girl even if she didn't say no, clearly wasn't in a state to consent (and, y'know, statutory regardless.)
That still sticks out to me as one of the most vibrant emotional character portraits ever in anime.
It's like the show makes you think. It's fucking great.
>It's like the show makes you think it's fucking great.
These are wonderful, thanks.
Also, something about spoiled vegetables?
It's rape. The friggen words on the road on the car ride home scream, "STOP"
The movie doesn't really seem like a movie. It's more like a thematic companion guide, y'know? I'm pretty sure it could never stand on its own, but golly gee do I love it
That's a funny but pretty accurate way to put it. I doubt it can be watched on it's own because it's actually really fast paced like a racing car, and I think you need to watch the series first to have everything about the characters and the themes sink in, so when the movie goes over them again, you're already pretty familiar with everything and can appreciate what it does differently.
Quite possibly the worst fanbase on /a/, Ikuhara is a hack fraud
So, what do the spinning roses /mean/?
Absolutely fucking nothing, just like everything else in the show.
I once introduced the movie to a friend as "The anime version of NASCAR"
He wasn't disappointed.
Are necks supposed to be that long
Each colour means something different.
They are just there to look pretty. Any other questions?
Heh, I distinctly remember saying wtf in my head when I watched this scene.
They represent each duelist. This is one of the easiest things to understand about the series. Why are you asking about it?
i agree with you, i did not think anything romantic of tv anthy and utena but i did think there was romance in the movie.
Read the authorial note posted above. The romance wasn't necessarily there from the start.
What exactly is he trying to say about growing up? I need to know because I never managed to. Isn't there some Japanese myth about people that get stuck in between childhood and adulthood becoming ghosts/monsters?
yeah, like I said, the best possible reading for him.
I got rape out of it. But god forbid you call a rapist a rapist, someone will accuse you of being a tumblr.
If Ohtori isn't real, where does the series take place?
A huge coffin.
Stock is a staple of shoujo animu. You should know better than to bring that up.
What is even real in Utena?
Ikuhara is just eccentric and wants you to think that.
Tokiko. She was just a visitor from reality.
What I got from it was to not chase flying castles in the sky, princesses or princes, fairytales, or try to live out those impossible fantasies yourself, or retreat to them after getting burned by reality or caught in your vices, or else you'll be stuck in a static timeless rut forever. The movie's ending with Utena saying they've reached a place with "no roads" was pretty on the nose, with roads being the fantasies people become slave to, instead of making your own path.
This might help a bit too
Nothing. It's just an anime, after all.
It's all just projections
This is also interesting
