>Sentai Filmworks Adds Sakura Trick Anime
What a shame about Sakura Trick. When do we find out when the good localisers pick up shows?
Who are the good localizers?
Aniplex, NIS, Viz, Madman.
>Sentai Filmworks Adds Magical Warfare Anime
Oh yeah, big time title you got there Sentai. Imagine all the possibilities.
What exactly do you mean by "localizers"?
Should've asked this in the first place, sorry.
get wreckt pleb
I thought their Mysterious Girlfriend X dub was okay
I'm honestly surprised Sentai got Sakura Trick. They usually get the slim pickings which means every other company, Funi, NISA etc, didn't want it, even though it's pretty much the show the season.
Anime licensing companies that add professional (but sometimes shitty) subs to distrobute to the west
Sentai Filmworks is a shell of ADV
ADV used to own the shit out of FUNi and Viz
Let that sink in for a second
At least they don't have yellow subs
We're not going to kill you over a simple keyboard mistype anon.
nOw if your fucking up on you're grammer then well kill you
And Gainax used to be the biggest name in anime.
So you're judging them on the quality of their subs, right? I understand.
Sentai is going fucking crazy with licensing all of a sudden
How else am I supposed to judge them?
I think licensing costs have gone down recently, so Sentai's new business strategy is "license everything, hope for a few hits."
At least Aniplex has Loli Conquest
Then who are the worst?
Sentai and Funi
Kanon and Air had amazing dubs
Then Sentai got Clannad, Angel Beats and Little Busters and they all got shit dubs
I'm not one of those people who subscribe to the belief that anime has somehow gotten worse over the years, but dubs on average are definitely a lot weaker on average ever since ADV died and Sentai rose from their ashes
>but dubs on average are definitely a lot weaker on average
Fuck I'm tired
Little busters got a dub...?
Was I living under a rock or did this completely fly under /a/'s detection?
It did, but it's shit so don't bother.
>Greg Ayres voicing an alpha male character
They just sit there re-releasing whatever Funi feels like giving them and sometimes if they are feeling bored they might remember to put their own logos on it instead of only having Funi's stuff. I bought Eden of the East from them and the cover art still had the 3 discs logo from the Funi version which had some extra shit on another disc but didn't release it so there was only 2 discs. The only decent release they have done in recent history was Guilty Crown which I will admit had a nice box and the art books were good as well but Siren remains the only Australasian distributor but I do have hopes for Hanabee to get good
Because something like Sakura Trick wouldn't have much of an audience among those who buy "professional subs" or dubs, it's one of the leftovers they get to pick up.
I was only aware of Madman. So is Siren any good?
I'm pretty much on /a/ daily and I didn't know this myself.
Maybe no one bothered posting about it.
In the same way Stalin was better than Hitler
>Greg Ayres plays Masato
I swear to fuck Sentai just pulls names out of a hat to determine whos voicing who.
There are so many dubs that I never knew about. Penguindrum, Shiki and UN-GO have them apparently
Shit, I didn't know about those either.
Guess no one posts about those here. Makes sense, really.
But It was licensed by Funimation. I'd have been more surprised if it didn't have a dub.
Does everything licensed by Funimation get a dub?
Does that mean everything that Funimation is simulcasting this season will get released here?
This. Theres always at least two misfit VAs in their dubs.
I also hate their insistence on keeping Japanese Honorifics in some of their dubs. Even with context, it'll still sound awkward because English speakers don't ever casually use Japanese Honorifics period. ADV was guilty of this too.
Anything they release to DVD/BD is pretty much a guaranteed dub.
Looks like they'll be something I never take the wrapping off of if I get round to buying.
Why the fuck would you buy a dubbed BD release if you don't like dubs
They are usually dual audio.
Because they're hybrids w/ subs most of the time.
God dammit it should be illegal for Sentai to use the shit packaging they use. Fucking disgusting.
I will pay for shows and movies so I have a nice case to hold and display them in on my shelf. I don't want this god damn shitty flimsy chink case that looks like shit.
I payed for a blu-ray from them once, never again. Yes I'm mad. They need to stop licensing things forever.
Or you just stop buying shit?
What bd was it?
Nah, I don't collect figures or any other merchandise so I don't spend that much, I just like having physical copies of stuff I really like. It's nice.
I bought Horizon S1, I was going to buy S2 as well but stopped myself since I never bought a sentai release. At least the dub was hilarious in the "this is really shitty" kind of way.
I can't wait for 40 year old american women to voice Sakura Trick
I can't wait to hear them do Hajime
And I wonder how manly Rui will sound
Maybe it'd be hard to sell yuri
Peguindrum's dub is absolutely atrocious. I couldn't stop cringing when I heard it; it's that fucking bad.
Also, does anyone own Tatami Galaxy? Subs are tiny as fuck and I can't read a thing.
If it's any reassurance at all, I have it in confidence that at least one of the VAs will be in her mid-20's.
Don't remind of that shitty dub.
With a show like Penguindrum you have to take special care of if you want to convey the same experience as the original but Sentai just pulled voice actors out of a hat, ignored the details and generally just did a really lazy rushjob of a show that deserved way more.
Then I watched the dub for Btooom, your typical juvenile gorefest action anime, and the dub was actually pretty good.
How come some forgettable mediocre action series get a better dub than fucking Penguindrum?
Will they have proper field practice, Mr Sentai?
Monica Rial will voice Yuu.
I'm calling it now
To be fair, they're not exactly a company that prides themselves on artistic integrity. The way they probably saw it was that Penguindrum was a nichey series doomed to not sell even a third/quarter as much as what shit like Btooom sells. Penguindrum is the series anime fans buy, Btooom is the shit casuals buy next to High School of the Dead.
Everything of value was lost.
>costs have gone down
Nah, it's just those series are cheap as fuck, the kind of stuff no one wants to buy so they're cheap anyway.
IIRC Siren has titles like Chihayafuru and Trapeze.
That should say it all.
The thing is that there's a split in the anime consumer base. The ones who buy a small number of their favorites and want nicer sets, and the ones who buy a large chunk of everything they watch who want cheap no-frills sets. While you might hate it when Sentai grabs something the latter group loves it.
Why would you buy from localisers, though? They cut so much extras, and you can't even be sure the quality/bitrates are intact.
Didn't Sentai get Watamote?
Importing is expensive and if I ever want to watch physical copies with subs
Good luck selling Yuri in the land of the free, outside one or two states. You'd have more luck in Russia, they might buy it by accident.
When you put it that way, Sentai's acquisition probably means more overall exposure. Which can only be a good thing.
I'm still surprised that the licensing rights to ST were sold so quickly and cheaply. Isn't that going to hurt domestic sales since the elevens know they can import a cheaper version?
Well they're probably going to get a really vanilla release a good while after the Japanese BDs are already out.
Sakura Trick comes from TBS. Sentai's licensing bro is drinking pals with the guy from TBS from way back during the ADV days. The only TBS titles since 2009 that haven't gone to Sentai were the first season of K-On! (too expensive) and Denpa Onna (went to NISA for some reason). If it's TBS, it's Sentai releasing a cheap-as-fuck rushed set like usual. Good job Americans! Way to fuck it up for the rest of us.
Hey don't blame all of America for one shitty dubbing companies practices.
Quick question are Sentai actually turning a profit? I mean I can see Funimation getting money because the stuff they license is usually popular in the West and they put at least a modicum of effort into it.
Why does it even matter? Won't the BDs be fansubbed, anyway?
You guys wanted anime cheap, you're getting it cheap as fuck and released incorrectly! See Chu2Ren for what buying cheap does for translation now.
Sentai's likely turning a profit due to how cheap licenses are and how cheap of a company they are. They're only selling 3,000 sets (DVD and BD) for their best sellers, so they're not making much money with this strategy.
They will, but buyfags in the US, UK, and AU are stuck with cheap-as-fuck rushed releases which may have issues with video, audio, translation, etc because Sentai fucks up so often. Those materials are sent to the other English distributors.
And no one will care because the anime they release is by comparison niche to the American audience. Compare what Horizion got in Japan with what it got in America.
Do many releases in Japan get subtitles like Horizon did?
I actually don't know.
Do you know where they can be purchased as a boxset instead of individual volumes?
Bandai's putting more subs on their releases. Nearly half of them have subs.
Aniplex puts subs on series targeted internationally like Fate/Zero and Madoka, but not on most.
Those are the only two distributors who consistently put subs on releases. Kadokawa/Pony Canyon does some, but those are made internationally.
No box set has been announced yet. Both seasons are only available in the singles releases.
Ah not just Horizon, but is most anime only available in single releases? I checked on CDJapan, but couldn't find any, and they are super expensive too
Yeah, some series are getting re-released in boxes, but you can never count on them. Singles are still the more profitable format. The boxes are more expensive than international releases, but cheaper than singles and about as much as domestic TV releases in Japan.
Where else other than CDJ can I buy them from?
Amazon Japan has the cheapest prices and shipping internationally, but they use DHL and your packages run the risk of being damaged during delivery.
HMV isn't as cheap, but ships internationally using EMS.
AmiAmi doesn't offer a big discount, but can ship using SAL.
Those are your three other choices besides using a proxy.
Thanks. I'll look into those
Well it's just that I hear a lot more people talk about Penguindrum than Btooom even though the latter came a year later
While I always knew Sentai dubs were bad, some casuals can't identify them as shit because they don't have experience with anime.
They slapped half-assed dubs onto insanely popular shows like Angel Beats and Clannad but people still talk about them. I even had one guy tell me that Angel Beats was better dubbed.
>license everything, hope for a few hits
Because that worked out so fucking well for them last time.
Simulcast or stream does not always mean it will get a physical release.
Such is the way of dubfags, anon. They really can't tell when a dub is bad.
