I think that was done before, I just dont remember the details.

And yes if the story is good, people watch shows for the story, some shows are just in cartoon format because it's much cheaper if they do it that way, but if they have enough production budget they will always go for real human cast because it has more appeal to the masses.

Evangelion rebuild did it.

The the Mecha's are all Computer Generated but /a/ doesn't mention it because they are too busy getting trolled by Anno.

I remain unimpressed every time they do this. Maybe Rebuild is an exception, but they had a large enough budget to pull it off, unlike most anime series.
