What was it like when you started getting into anime? I've been nostalgic recently. Ah, being a casual seems like yesterday.
>inb4 still a casual
>>
never really cared about anime until I watched SAO last year (yeah I know I suck).
>>
>>100786873
Hey, man. We all have to start somewhere.
>>
>>100786800
I saw DEEN Stay Night.
And liked it the first time.
>>
There's a lot of blogs today for some reason.
>>
To my luck I started with all the famous entry level stuff like Elfen Lied, Death Note, Guren Lagann etc. I probably couldn't enjoy them anymore nowdays.
>>
>>100787348
Atleast this blog is relevant.
>>
I watched ouran host club on a complete whim while browsing around on youtube.

I then proceeded to read roughly 100x more than I watch, but I'm manga so deep I'm not sure I'll ever get out
>>
>>100786873
I want to end you.
>>
>>100787274
Still my favorite anime OP even though the show itself is awful.
>>
>>100786800
It was like this

>>
>>100787493
Atleast isn't a word.
>>
>>100786800
It was a marvelous experience. I had a brief Naruto/DeathNote period but i quit soon after that and decided to come to /a/ and back to anime during GC and F/Zero season. I didnt care about backlog I just mostly lurked and watched the cuurently airing shows. I have to say that /a/ was at its peak for the last time then. After SAO summer there was too many anti-moe sentiments that grew even larger with JoJo and SnK bringing in the crossboarders. Now that I think about it, I am sad I missed the Geass years-2011.
>>
>>100787782
How old are you?
>>
Why is Death Note really the prime gateway anime?
>>
>>100787493
Because it's about anime, right?

Oh boy, a nostalgiafagging thread?

I think the first time I got into anime was technically Doraemon, followed by Patlabor, Robotech (yes, the butchered Harmony Gold one), and several SR anime. The one I remember the most is Tosho Daimos. Much later I started reading the Dragon Ball manga, which led me into all sorts of manga from there. It was like a whole new world.

First time I learned about fansubs was after we got 1mbps internet for the first time. The first fansubbed show I downloaded was Vandread. After a while I learned the difference between the TV broadcast and DVDrips and I was completely blown away.
>>
>>100787755
Oh shit. I remember that.

Because emo culture. It was pretty popular back then. Actually even emos are manly comoared to modern hipster culture and SJWs.
>>
>>100787782
Fate/Zero was the SAO of that time, which was the SnK of that other time, which is the crap of today.

Basically,
No, Anon, you are the crossboarders.
>>
>>100787958
And now you are posting idorus.
>>

Well you must have been in jail or something for the season right after K-On! and the 15 K-On! clones that brought all these moe loving neckbeards.
>>
I saw Kirino reaction pics on all kinds of 4chan boards and I was interested in who this cute girl was.
And that's how I started watching anime.

It wasn't the best first anime.
>>
>>100787886
The first half is brilliant. Definitely one of the most entertaining strategic mind animes but then everything goes to shit in the second half.
>>
>>100788083
I know, right? i still love a good mecha series, even though I never go to /m/
>>
I first actually started watching anime last summer. My mate accidentally brought the Madoka manga with him and I read the first volume, and liked it. Then I watched it since I've been going on 4chan for a few years now and never got into anime. I'm still a massive casual though, my "to watch" list is bigger than my watched list.
>>
>>100788059
Nah, urobucher still wasnt normalfag friendly from my observation back then. He was only known for that pedoshit and that other pedoshit by the eventuall SnK /v/ermins to be. Also TypeMoon isnt highly regarded by the manime crowd much.
>>
I had a pretty shitty childhood I wanted to escape from (nothing dramatic, just bullying and distant parents. Pretty similar to everyone here I assume), and I couldn't stand watching the average TV show. I remembered watching Dragonball Z on TV and somebody mentioned it was an anime, I asked them what the fuck an anime was and they showed me Death Note. Being an incredibly introverted kid with no friends and a shitload of free time, I proceeded to devote the entirety of my time to watching whatever random shit people recommended to me.

Turning point when I started going from "Anime is pretty cool mang" to "Holy shit I fucking love anime" was when Haruhi fanaticism was a huge deal, and when I joined /a/ back at the beginning of 2007 or so.

Oh great, I've been here 7 years.
>>
>>100788199
OP here, we all go through that phase on MAL.
>>
All I remember from when I was "getting back into anime" read: not rewatching stuff that aired on Toonami was being incredibly confused at the feeling in my chest caused by the final episodes of Rozen Maiden S1 when Jun combs Shinku's hair and she says something along the lines of "a women will only let someone she loves brush her hair."

I was destined to be a fucking weirdo from that point forward.
Fucking anime, man.
>>
>>100788109
Are you that guy from /pol/, whom I reccd Oreimo and Haganai and you ended up liking then. Please dont tell me its my fault you are ruined.
>>
>>100788059
How can put something like SoA on the same level as SNK or F/Z. SOA is the only one that deserves the hate it receives because it's actually bad.
>>
I saw this opening when I was 9 or 10 years old and just started watching whatever that channel had, the end.

If I recall, someone recommended FMA for me online some forum. But I like 12 so I wasn't allowed to watch anything with blood. So instead I bought a PS2 FMA game and played through that, and eventually just watched the show. After FMA I moved onto Bleach, then Haruhi and blah blah.
>>
This is the thread where I mention my gateways and it comes out how most of those are substantially older than most of /a/, right?

At least some of us got in from butchered dubs, and the late 80s early 90s OVA boom and might still have VHS recordings of Scifi Channel's Saturday Anime around somewhere if we looked, right?
>>
>>100788294
You know what comes next don't you anon?
>>
Well as a young one I watched pretty much what was on TV, stuff on Toonami, Pokemon, Beyblade ect. Then I went through that Naruto/Bleach phase, I read the Naruto manga up untell Shippuden started and stopped watching Bleach after the save Rukia arc. I immigrated from 711chan to 4chan just in time for Code Geass.
>>
>>100788294
Since you are from 2007, can you tell me why Haruhi faded away from /a/? A newfag is more likely to watch Clannad or EVA or even Bake that Haruhi. There definately has to be some reason for this, considering the popularity back in the day.
>>
>>100788294

He gets sucked into the void, and forever becomes one with /a/?
>>

That's one hell of a time-skip.
>>
Watched all the generic shit like DragonBall Z, Yugioh, Pokemon, Naruto, Shaman King ect but I was never introduced to the concept of anime until I watched Elfen Lied online after finding it under the 18+ section of a website while I was looking for porn. Obviously it blew my fucking mind and I proceeding to hail it as the greatest thing since sliced bread.
>>

Nobody here has actually watched anime since the mid-90s. We just read the plot summaries on wikipedia so we can hang out here and insult each other all day.

/a/ is like one of the most non-american boards, you are less likely to have the same things happen to you and to otjer anons. For example, the only way a slavshit like me to get to know anime early on was by being born into a richer family that had cable and travelled alot, which I did.
>>
>>100788586
You can thank Endless Eight for that, it sounds funny to talk about it now but it was incredibly rage inducing back then.

>>100788485

For me it started out in the most unfavorable way imaginable.
I was searching for the soundtrack of requiem for a dream on youtube and came across something called "AMV" with a cartoony thumbnail.
So I clicked it and watched it.
It was bloody, gorey, had nudity and was better known as Elfenlied.
So my teenage self was thrilled by the edgyness and nudity.
The ending was somewhat open, so I searched for a sequel online, came across a fansite, joined it, searched for replacement while waiting for the sequel.
So a guy recommended me Eva, and I never looked back.

Sorry for blog btw.
>>
It was with Gundam Wing which I didn't finish right away. Then I watched Gundam X which is probably the first anime I ever completed. No regrets.
>>
>>100788699
I actually hate coming to /a/ these days because people rarely ever discuss anime anymore. Maybe it was always this shit and I'm just being nostalgic. I preferred anime when it wasn't socially acceptable.
>>

Quod erat demonstratum.
>>
>>100788845

>>
>>100788586
Clannad and Eva still get recommendations. Haruhi doesn't.

a few reasons for this I can see:
1: Nothing really happens in Haruhi. It's really a pure SoL show, which goes to show that SoL is a broader genre than cute girls doing cute things, but it doesn't address the core issue of non-plot
2: the non-chronological order thing is offputting to newfags.
3: Endless 8 turned an awful lot of people off the show. It's like andy kaufman, the anime.
4: recommendations can either be "this is IMPORTANT" or "this is something you will enjoy." Haruhi is in that sweet spot of being enjoyable and important, but unfortunately not too far into either.

I enjoyed haruhi, and think the God Knows concert is probably the defining moment of anime for the last decade. But I understand why it doesn't get recommended too often.
>>
>>100788910
Demonstrandum, Anon, demonstrandum.
>>
>>100788845
Its not socially acceptable, get over yourself. We will never have the amount of animefans like we did during the Naruto era and thank God. As far as I know even anime cons are full of non-anime things like mlpfags.

The anime that got me started was H.O.T.D. It's a good gateway anime. Then i went on to F/SN then Busou Renkin but sadly most shounens weren't as good as BR. After all the normalfag stuff i started watching the old gems. Still doing that.

>>
>>100786800
I started getting into anime when I was 16, which was probably late by some people's standards.
I actually started watching mostly stuff from the previous years so I could marathon them, Soul Eater being my first anime and what drew me in. Death Note and F/SN actually followed and I'm one of the people who are ashamed to say they liked DEEN's F/SN at the time.
First experience following currently airing anime was Bakemonogatari, I think, though I didn't follow from episode 1, having caught up a little later due to the hype. Well, those were good times, what can I say.

Was usually into anime as a kid and I didn't know it. I liked the Toonami stuff and Pokemon. Never knew what anime was but I enjoyed watching the shows.
When I found out about the concept of anime I was in 8th grade. Had a friend that always read manga and loaned me some.
I watched Naruto, Bleach, Chobits, and some other starter anime.
Eventually got bored with the bigger shows and strayed into the smaller shows by the end of 8th grade. At summer brake between 8th and 9th grade I just sat around playing WoW and watching various anime. Was possibly the best summer I've ever had. Was just isolated from the abusive home life and in my own little world.
That's what basically shot off my anime obsession. I still enjoy anime but watch less and less each year. Do tend to watch old anime again though when im bored.

When I had seen about 20 series.

Started last year, in January. First three anime I watched knowing they were anime were Bebop, Death Note, and Code Geass, in that order. First sub was SAO. Started watching 20+ shows each season in spring of last year, and started posting on /a/ around the same time. Started reading VNs/Manga in the summer.

my favourite anime is still code geass
>>
>>100789934
Was watching Naruto online and when I got ahead of what the English had I ended up watching subs. Was already used to watching foreign films so subs didn't bother me what so ever.
Noticed the quality was better and stuck with watching subs. Still watch dubs when they're better or equal to the subs.
>>
>>100786800
My first real contact with anime was watching the dctp Nachtclub midnight anime marathons on VOX as a kid.

Watching stuff like MD Geist, Urotsukidoji and similar shows.

>>100789999
Dem quads.

Geass was my favorite for a long time till over time it just seemed worse and worse to me. Eventually Gurren Lagann beat it. So far Gurren Lagann is the one anime that stays awesome despite the number of times ive watching it.
>>
>>100789934
Unless we're counting things like Pokemon, I don't think I ever watched dubs if I could help it.

My first real exposure to anime was the first FMA, subbed, so I guess I just proceeded from there.
Back in high school, my roommate and I were working our way through Eva. Every day after classes we would race back to the dorm, because the first one home got to turn on the DVD player and pick the language track. He always went for dubs, I went for subs.

I watched anime in german, without knowing any german. It sounded way better that the few dubbed anime that my balkan shithole. I actually learned basic german that way, but my english level was also way too high for a 9 year old back then, so I probably just had it easy in languages by talent. Funny thing is, that Sailor Moon is the only one who I dont remember the plot of. I even rewatched a few others like DBZ,KamiKadze Jeanne and Power Stone and I did remember the plot.
>>
>>100789934
Shit son, I started watching subs when most of DBZ was undubbed and all the movies were only available subtitled in RM format with iddy bitty yellow subs. And I downloaded that shit over dialup too.

I don't care what 90% of dubfags say, I've been watching my DBZ is nipponese forever and dub Goku just sounds weird to me. M-muh manliness when you're dealing with the universe's strongest manchild.
>>
>>100789999
Nice lies, quads.
>>
>>100790517
Ocean dub Vegeta is gold.
>>
>>100789934
After two shows. But I guess what prompted me to basically never again touch a dub except for highly acclaimed ones (like Baccano!) was trying out the Higurashi dub. That was awful.

Now that I think about it, compared to the various forums I used to browse as a young teenager, 4chan has on average much better spelling/grammar.

But back then, I didn't separate "anime" from "western cartoons". It was all the same to me. I just thought they were all really cool shows.

I was downloading Love Hina and Final Fantasy unlimited with shit quality on Kazaa. I remember one of the first fansub groups I ever saw were called "Soldats" or something.

Oh, and I can't forget Love Hina.

That was great - I loved it when I was a kid. Hell, I still like it.

>What was it like when you started getting into anime?
It was 1998 and I had dial up internet.
I downloaded anime about cute girls killing shit.

Almost 20 years later things have not changed much.
>>
I only started last year with Hataraku Maou-sama! but I'm trying to climb the ladder.

Saw my cousin watching shit quality streams of some show from summer 2011, Mayo Chiki if I remember correctly. It looked interesting so I started watching it myself. From there I picked up a few other airing shows, and marathoned a bunch of anime from 2005-2010, some good, some bad, most dubbed. I discovered /a/ somehow through watching Steins;Gate I think. From there I discovered downloading, and the golden age began. Now I mostly just watch seasonal shit.

Before that I had only seen dubs like pokemon, yugioh, and stuff on toonami: yu yu hakusho, dbz, naruto, bleach. I never really considered any of that "anime", it was just another cartoon to me.

Code Geass, despite its flaws is a decent show.

It's a great show, only because of it's flaws.

I remember being so excited waiting for r2 to start. As soon as the first episode came out and I saw this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiU5CaXCwlI I jizzed my pants. It was all downhill from there though.

S2 had some fun eps, as long as you didn't really take anything seriously.

S1 was much better, though.

I honestly can't remember, but I know what it was like when I first started getting into /a/.

I remember casually watching Steel Jeeg and Mazinger on this shitty private TV channel on saturday mornings since I was very little and I can see how that contributed in giving me a preference for sci-fi and mecha-related stuff. It was glorious. Then there was the big Dragonball boom when I was around 10. Along the way, I had watched religiously a few terribly dubbed series, such as Sailor Moon and Nadia: The Secret of Bluewater. Oh and Gundam Wing. I think my full introduction to the magical realm of animoo was MTV. Here in poorfag-country, it had this anime night thing in which they had shows like City Hunter, FMP, GTO, Cowboy Bebop and Ranma 1/2. Then, when I was 14 and finally obtained an internet connection, I came across a thing called Love Hina... So, all in all, the Internet only helped me in finding more anime to watch, rather than introducing me to it. I skipped all the digimon and pokemon stuff because everyone watched it back then, me included. When Naruto finally landed here too, I wasn't particularly impressed, and instead indulged on my /m/ related binge. That was when I started watching NGE and for my limited, angsty teenager mind, it became quickly the "BESTEST ANIMOO EVER" and actually made fun of the Narutards because of their terrible taste.

...Yet only now I do realize they were no better than me.
