what's your favorite kind of protagonist?
no generic whiny bitches or angry angsty teens need apply
inb4 spike speigel
The ones with motivation, and tons of it.
This could have been a good thread
Best MC. Best detective. Best Waifu.
I like underdog losers like Kaiji because I can relate to them.
what does /a/ think about intelligent, but cynical smartasses?
the best I can think of are Baird from GoW or the main character from O' Brother Where Art Thou?
But anon, she cannot be a waifu, she can only rape.
I like Ginko..
I've been watching a few harems recently because of a friend pestering me about them. I don't know what my favourite is but my least is easily the self insert harem lead.
Is she listening to her ipod or is that a gray hair? My lady satsuki cant be getting old already?
Who said waifus can't rape?
It's just light catching on her shiny, silky black hair. They do that constantly with Satsuki.
Because it's basically me, and I like me as protagonist.
/k/ writefag here. trying to work on an anime-ish graphic novel telling the story about a platoon stuck in the equivalent of the 30 years war but with modern weapons. The story revolves around the officer and his sergeant. the sergeant ive got figured out. she's fatalistic and devoted to keeping the LT alive because he's the last of their old platoon that go wiped out. It's a frodo and sam kinda thing. But what should I do about the LT MC? all of the others in the platoon are colorful, but I don't want MC to end up as generic, 'me leader, me smart, me bland' type of MC like in Valkyria chronicles
got any ideas?
This guy is somewhat based.
If it has an edgygrimdark tone, make it seem like the deaths of his comrades have shaped his character. I don't; I barely got a B grade in GSCE Literature.
Oh, and don't make the war good vs evil. Try and make it more of an idealistic battle.
Characters that can endure hardship and get things done!
Someone that makes mistakes, but can be related to on some things.
Think about what you want the reader to think when they read about the MC. Despicable? Honorable? Logically grounded?
Those are the kinds of things to consider
I like girls who are maing characters in shonen, who, at the same time, are not writen as mere sexual objects. Sadly, I think that's pretty rare in shonen.
It's not good vs evil. It's got grey guys on one side, slightly darker guys on the other, and a neutral country in the middle just trying to survive that got invaded because 'lol belgium highway to france'
one day, middle country's on one side, the next the switch to the other, so that they hope to grind down BOTH sides of the war so that they have an equal footing with the two other countries when it comes time to talk about territory. turns out the war was started by another country that wanted to use the war to sell more iron ie switzerland during WWII feeding the nazi war machine while 'neutral'
The sgt (who's kinda like AoT's mikasa, but without being a stoic mary sue) just wants to keep her LT alive, at the price of just about anything. it's the only thing that gives meaning to all the hardship in the war. and it seems like a pretty human gesture, until we see that it's petty tribalism just like what led to the war in the first place.
LT cares about his whole platoon, hoping that by fighting in the war he will help to finally end it regardless of who wins. sergeant's got street smarts and experience, he's got book smarts. I'm just scared he's going to end up being generic like every other fish out of water character in anime
A MC that starts weak and works his way up.
Kenichi is a prime example actually. Sucks that his series is nothing but ripped clothes and flashy effects now.
Didn't he get together with Enri?
>works on his dream job
>has rich, cute, blond wife
What about Mikasa Ackermen of Fight Against Giants or Marlene Angel of Blue Gender? Do those count?
Gary Cooper clones.
>no generic whiny bitches
That explains alot.
>not good vs evil
>not a mary sue
This is good. One thing though, the nuetral faction siding with one side and then the other reminds me too much of Orb allying with the Earth Alliance and later, their enemy, ZAFT in Gundam SEED. Bare in mind, I'm a huge Gundam fan and this is just me,
You keep using that word.
one like Shinji
Tony? Is that you? What are you doing on /a/, you're supposed to be dead.
The one and only.
Unrelated to the topic at hand, I just haven't had an excuse to post this in ages.
cute, innocent young girls who gradually become more corrupted as the series goes on
Like Medaka? Wait...
Anybody love the relaxed laid back character?
>BUT THIS ONE IS NOT ALLOWED HURR
Best MC reporting in
Ones that put on a show.
Would you honestly use the words OP picked to describe your favorite character? Is your taste so horrible even you can't ignore it?
I never watched gundam. someone else described it as sort of like one of the Ace Combat games, but my envisioning is more like Band of Brother interspersed with Ghost in the Shell level political theory discussion
epic dude i love naruto
(BTW check these chill dubs ;^))
I like shinji, but his problem is that he was so overly unsubtly whiny -- as a mockery of most cliche MCs who were the opposite, angry determined and angsty -- that Shinji accidently spawned an entire generation of whiny, bitchy, self hating loser MCs
>whiny, bitchy, self hating loser
Nah, Shinji was hot blooded in a few scenes.
If you're talking shit about Welkin...
Tell us what keeps you from not writing the protagonist to be more interesting. Do you think a certain kind of personality will make it more difficult to write, do you fear experimenting around or what? Is there a reason you don't have him be a PTSD gun nut with a pendant for casual rape? Elaborate.
New chapter never. ;_;
Someone like Mario from Rainbow
As well as Azai Kyousuke, the guy in G-senjou no Maou
>whiny, bitchy, self hating loser MCs
I don't get where this bullshit are coming from, /a/ always scream about whiny harem leads or something but they are not even whiny, angsty or whatever for the most part.
Sure there some examples that I can kinda agree but that's more or less exeptions,
Hot-blooded? That was desperate. Desperate as all hell.
Shinji -is- a whiny teenager. And it works, he's a character with a whole ton of problems, most of the emotional sort, thrown into a highly pressurizing and demanding situation and reacts realistically, like any fucking teenager smack dab in the middle of puberty would.
I don't get why people ever hate him for that. I mean, Jesus Christ, learn to empathize a bit.
Yes, he's fairly reluctant in everything, but he's got every reason to be.
that's why I love him. But I think I like happy makes-grills-weak-in-the-knees shinji the best
Antisocial trash-talking loners with a rarely seen soft side. The kind that try to get shit done instead of spewing out linkin park lyrics.
Come on, at least try to pretend you're not a crossboarder.
Which is why I said he wasn't in a few scenes, dipshit.
I wish Japan would produce more of this kind. (At least in manga, but they are too busy writing shitty stories with dumb protagonists using the power of friendship.)
A serious, composed person that has resolve to accept necessary evil.
>I don't get why people ever hate him for that
Because normies can't feel sympathy for those they don't understand and saw weaker as they are.
It's funny and quite ironic, because it shows how people simply want their wishes to come true:"cool character always badass, fuck bitches, hell yeah!".
smug as fuck
fucks bitches and gets the riches
fuck's sake, guys
it's a single fucking picture saved from google images. i don't go on tumblr
A serious, composed person that has resolve to accept necessary evil.
>Antisocial trash-talking loners
>instead of spewing out linkin park lyrics.
The kind that steals the MC chair halfway through the series
I dunno, I just really like stupid MCs.
Sure thing sir. I could also phrase retarded "arguments" like yours. Such as, weaklings wanting to feel better seeing an excuse/failure of a protag to easily self-insert.
See, very smart isn't it?
The previous comment was fine, yours is just mere fallacy.
Yet you can't into punctuation, can't change the filename and don't even had the pictures in the first place, you're no better than any newfag.
My friend gave me his PC, which I am posting from. It lacks the usual set of 4chan images that I have on my laptop.
well it is kinda true though. most people who watch Eva and hate it can't relate to the MC. Eva and Dostoevsky are thing you can't really get into unless you used to be a kind of fucked up person.
>tfw when anime will never get an MC as uber-badass as Sol Badguy
Why even pull a chain of crap out of your ass like this? Even if it's the truth you're just some random anonymous guy on the internet. Why do you give a shit? Stop trying to fit in and pretend you don't go on tumblr or if you got the image from Google. It doesn't matter. Either, don't invite your friends here and forget about it or just forget about it.
>Eva and Dostoevsky are thing you can't really get into unless you used to be a kind of fucked up person.
Jesus, get over yourself.
You better actually wrote something more useful than acting smug and ironic.
What so retarded about it? you can see this everywhere, people can't understand not only the purpose of Shinji as character, but also as the whole series, which they keep thinking about as usual mecha show.
So you like your protagonist to play a mere supporting role to the heroine?
When they're done wrong they're Mary Sue tryhard faggots. But when they're done well...
What do you guys think about this sort of protagonist?
would you like to see a Mongolian Picture Book about it?
Any protagonist from an anime that isn't a juvenile wish fufillment fantasy, so most Seinen protags.
Monogatari had a pretty good thing going with Kaiki.
Stopped reading there.
I like my protag to be smart, calculating and getting interesting girls.
>wish fufillment fantasy
>complaining about something NOT being as you wish for
And why you faggots keep coming here on /a/ with such pretentious attitude?
Do you realize how hypocrite it is?
Seinen does not mean what you think it does.
Kyousuke did pretty much nothing smart or calculating for the vast majority of the game. It's in his character description, but it doesn't show in his character. He was just the tagalong male MC while Haru led the game.
I like all characters as long as they fit the story.
While bringing Dosto-kun in this discussion is very out of place he is sort of right, Eva characters and his are kind of similar in that many find them frustrating and unnerving because they find it difficult to relate to them since they show the "ugly" and pathetic side of people that you usually don't want to see, but I'm just generalizing. Even though they're very human in the end.
Either my memory is completely broken, or you only read the main route.
What are you even talking about you goon
When I say wish fufillment I mean anime that panders to some loser who wishes his life was that way, e.g. millionth uninspired TEENS WITH SUPERPOWERS or harem anime.
I like boys like him as protagonists.
i don't think there's a better protagonist than Chinese Electric Batman
well he's smart alright, but I don't want him outshining the female staff sergeant who beats him in terms of experience. And that being the case, it's hard to write that without the MC seeming like 'the new guy' without anything that stands out.
Only character Kishi hasn't ruined that isn't DEAD.
And I think we could use more of that especially for adult MC.
Gentle, nice guy who you root for, but not a total pussy. This guy is great for all the above conditions.
My characters r not faggots or Mary sues. You must have not read the manga or anime.
People aren't that sympathetic with whiny, beta characters because most people aren't whiny, beta people. Generally, people smile easily, make friends easily, make people laugh easily, and work hard easily. They can't sympathize with anxiety or depression because most people really haven't gone through it, and so, understandably, they complain because they could actually do better than the protagonist. People can understand a retard, and can imagine being unable to do math problems, but people have difficulty understanding why anyone would choose to avoid people or not fight for survival. It would be like if you watched a show where all of the main characters problems arose because he refused to eat, and would even say things like "I hate food!" and "We're all going to die anyways!"
Also, a lot of people just complain about beta protagonists because it's an easy thing to complain about; it's the equivalent of immediately hating Medaka Box because you saw someone say the MC is a Mary Sue in a youtube comment. When people don't have anything insightful to say about a show, they often fall back on easy criticism, and criticizing the MC's manliness is about the easiest thing you can do.
