Do the vast majority of anime fans grow out of anime by the time they leave their teens? Pic related. MAL and Gaia are populated by 14 year olds.
No, older people just have enough dignitiy not to discuss anime on MAL and Gaia.
or they outgrow those websites
I actually decided to look at Gaia to see if /a/ was exaggerating about how bad it was. The posters were all faggots and children and the layout was pure eyecancer.
It made me feel lucky to have /a/.
No. Majority of anime fans grow out of MAl and Gaya
I like MAL, nothing more fun than reviewing popular shit with a really low score and completely bullshitting what the anime is about.
Speaking of shit sites, anyone here that can give me opinions on Hummingbird? Friends have told me good things about it, but I'm pretty content with spreadsheets.
Current places in internet to discuss anime:
/a/ - heere
Gaya - was not relevant for multiple years already
MAL -metacritic of anime. Shittiest blogging and wannabe experts community on the web. Slow as fucl.
ANN - normalfag centrale. Piracy, pantsu, incest, loli, fanservice, moe etc. bad BAD! Circlejerk of stuck up idiots making walls of text about how specific anime is ruined by single panty shot or how showing guns in it make it worse than Hitler.
Animesuki - decent place for untranslated LN discussion, many manga translators/japanese frequent it. Would be a decent place, however is hevily moderated and thus allows infestation of 12 years old kiddies, occasional Tumblr fags and other cancer.
Thus that leaves us with /a/ - where you can call a faggot faggot, everything is discussed, board moves fast and despite lots of cancer and trolls still better overal board then all other combined.
However if you look at other boards and see how slow they are / how little discussion actually happens, you realize that lots of normalfags go to /a/ for a sole reason its the only "fast" place in internet where you can post any topic and gets lots of repplies and discussion.
While even the most popular topic on MAL would have 10 pages, /a/ by than would haev 20 topics past bump limit.
>everything is discussed,
>you realize that lots of normalfags go to /a/ for a sole reason its the only "fast" place in internet
Yes, this is my main reason.
Wouldn't reddit's anime board be faster than ours. It has more people, doesn't it?
No, not at all. For comparison, reddit had like 3 Wake Up Girls topics in total with like 100 posts. Meanwhile /a/ had dozens past bump limit, multiple every day.
Damn, why can't Reddit get more popular then.
reddit is for normalfags. Anime is not popular.
Does that mean 4chan has more bronies than reddit?
reddit is for lgbt and other degenerates
Bronies have died out on 4chan, only horsefuckers remain.
There's a difference?
Horsefuckers hide their powerlevels.
bronies dont have sex with real-life horses i think
/a/ is more popular than reddit /anime/
Which is why I want reddit's /anime/ to get more popular, would mean less traffic to /a/, right?
Well, if you were some casual and you wanted some quick answers, would you not go to /anime/ if it was more active and popular?
and /a/ is populated by MAL
>grow out of anime
>Do the vast majority of anime fans grow out of anime
Seriously if you're over 20 and watching anime, get a fucking life you pathetic losers
If you're under 20 you shouldn't be allowed to post on this board.
I'll open a portal to gensokyo once I attain my wizardly powers.
I'll interpret this as a being underage confession.
>wannabe experts community on the web
Oh dear fucking god this. Usually when I'm thinking of picking up an anime I google it and the first result is MAL, fair enough they usually give clear descriptions on a show. Go down to the comments, I'm expecting a "Good show 10/10." "It was okay, felt like it was lacking something here." etc. not some 4 paragraph long review on why this series is plain and okay.
>join MAL in hopes of pitching idea for a short VN and getting critiques
>Open creativity board
>Every thread: "I have a manga idea, can someone draw it for me?"
Hummingbird is Gaia, but with the MAL database.
Stick with MAL.
>Show people how to use the full 1-10 scale and why it's better
>HURR DURR I RATE HOW I WANT
>Previous threads have them complaining that Mal's ratings are horrible
Creative Corner is the most cancerous part of MAL by a large margin.
I remember there was this one kid who sporadically posted her k-pop fanfiction there. It was almost remarkable how terrible that shit was.
>Do the vast majority of anime fans grow out of anime by the time they leave their teens?
Yes. At least to the point of discussing it on internet forums.
It's worse than that at points.
When I was considering picking up C3bu after it's season finished, I expanded the reviews on its page and face-desked at the second one.
I am a wannabe expert on why demonbane the anime is non-existent, go read my review.
I hung around Creative Corner for a while and tried to give people tips, but it became too big a burden and I ran away to /a/ anime creation threads.
What the fuck man, that's more autistic than me.
Probably because they're reviews, not comments. Reviews are long by nature, otherwise they'd be impressions.
But they write them as if people care to read them
that wasnt your original complaint, get fucked.
>Seriously if you're over 20 and watching anime
So, if you watched half of any season?
I'm not that anon.
Probably because some people care to read them. It's an issue of content, not length, you dense fucks.
>going on MAL
>actually going on MAL and reviewing or rating shows
ANN reviews this season are bit less autistic than usual, but still in same key, especially if you read the forum comments
>ANN reviews this season are bit less autistic than usual,
Go check out the Sekai Seifuku page, come back here and say that again.
> but it became too big a burden and I ran away to /a/ anime creation threads.
I ran away to /a/ because I was tired of getting banned.
Speaking of giving people tips, we spent 10+ pages trying to help that kid make her terrible fanfiction readable (it wuz typed lyk dis i sh1t u nt) and she spent 10+ pages rejecting every single suggestion.
I've been watching anime for over 16 years. I just turned 30. MAL and Gaia are absolute cancer not that this place is much better but it sure as hell beats those places.
Did you obtain magic?
Did anyone else started getting 3-day bans(without any warnings) for a stupid shit like funposting/typing an ironic smiley in your post or something that mods apparently deem as rayciss(which it isn't)?
You deserve your ban for being ironic cancer.
ironic shitposting is still shitposting, faggot
I hope you get banned again.
uh-huh honey ;)
Nobody would give a shit if your post was original or funny, but it wasn't. Put some goddamn effort into them so people at least enjoy reading them.
You deserve to be permabanned.
that's cool, but don't you think that there are perhaps activities better suited for 30 year olds than complaining about children's websites for cartoons. they're literally children, of course the discussion isn't that interesting from an adult point of view
funposting goes on /jp/ and stays on /jp/
[banned](USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST)[/banned]
You're next in line, queers.
Mods ban based on your post alone, without any context. So ironic shitposting in a shitty thread WILL get your ass banned if someone reports your post.
>people actually think whether they agree with the number has anything to do with the quality of the review
I consider myself an open minded man. What activities could you recommend?
I guess you skipped the last one on purpose.
reddit's r/anime reminds me of the messageboards their fucking slow
Why has there been about 3 or 4 site meta threads in the past what, hour?
27 year old here.
I work all day, what I do in my free time is my own damn business. Besides, "Adult" activities are expensive and/or boring.
If I want to watch chinese cartoons and laugh at college kids posting dumb pictures, that's my problem.
(Hey 30bro, will I really get wizard powers in 3 years? Should I start shopping for a nice robe?)
I'm 27 and I use mal-updater.
What do you guys think of this guy's suggestion
Totally not me by the way
Not really. I've "grown out" of watching animes ate 14. But I got into it again when I turned 18. I'm 20 years old.
I'd say that you can't possibly stop with a hobby. You might get tired of it for a while, but it's most likely temporary.
Night time /a/ like always.
Thank you mods. It's nice to see that you do exist sometimes.
Finally, some justice.
I actually didn't really get into anime like I am now until I was almost 20.
When I was 12-13 I watched some of the Toonami/AS stuff, but basically came to ignore it throughout middle and most of highschool, not out of fear/prejudice, but out of sheer ignorance of what was out there and how to go about finding it. I was way too busy with video games instead.
Finally, some activity that's worth it.
no just internet activity drops off as people age
How does it drop when new users keep rolling in every year? The internet is bigger than ever.
You're right, but you're retarded for wasting your time trying.
I'm 23 and I've got a MAL, but I only use it with taiga to keep track of my watched/watching list. I wrote one review for something really shitty though.
It's mostly 14 y/os because they don't have enough intelligence to see how stupid everyone on the website is.
HANG THE FUCKER
i'm not that much younger myself, but i think it's probably a good idea to strive for at least some level of self awareness and not sperg out about random anime websites aimed at kids and teens
you know what i meant.................
That wasn't me.
Yes, because most anime is aimed at teens.
>MAL and Gaia are populated by 14 year olds.
27. Yeah, anime is very immature. It's obvious for anyone who watches more than anime and mainstream Hollywood shit.
I still enjoy some shows.
When naruto and SAO is at the top of their best anime rankings, you know it is.
Sure it isn't, MemeArrowMAL. How could I have been so wrong?
I'm actually half asleep right now and thought the post I was responding to was talking about coming to /a/ and not about bitching about gaia.
Yeah, gaia and shit are shit. Whatever man, doesn't matter.
Reading comprehension at 4am is hard. (So are catchpas)
I'll just leave this here.
[banned](USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST)[/banned]
i use mal to keep track of the shit i watch/read
>visiting the forums
hell no when it passed the 100 members mark it went to shit
I never knew that. That particular ban was definitely deserved, but I think it would be a good idea if posts were viewed in context as opposed to just by themselves. Something might appear to be ill-intentioned on it's own that really wasn't when taken in context or the opposite could also be true that something appears fine on its own until you see it in context.
>Yeah, anime is very immature
>because its drawn it's immature
Full retard, holy shit kid.
>not reading manga
Who am I kidding, it's been a lost cause for a long time
i don't think that's what he said mate.
Confirmed for 15 years old kid.
That's not what he said at all
You're just wasting your breath.
People don't like to think of an average show as 5/10 because people subconsciously think of grades relative to school. From childhood we're taught unequivocally that 5/10 = 50% = failure. You'd need at least a solid C to not be seen as doing horrible, and even so many/most people consider Cs crappy. So likewise people just kind of plugged in the logic that a show needs to be 7/10 to be marginally okay, 8/10 to be average and 9+ to be good. Likewise accepting a 6/10 to them is analogous to accepting a D on a test as good, etc.
Because no one there is beat over the head with "don't grade this like you grade things at school" when they join they just assume that this is how ratings work by default, and since they already rated all their shit on that rubric, they aren't going to go redo everything just because one guy says that they should. Peoples' laziness / "but everyone else does it this way" will keep them from fixing flaws even when pointed out right to their face.
>dropping shows when you are almost done
Why is the scanlation community so fragmented and why is it such a pain in the ass to find a series complete not on a fucking online reader.
Why the fuck are there no batches of manga chapters. I don't want to download 50 fucking rar files that I have to dig through your mediocre blogspot blog for and wait like five minutes each for whatever rapidshit clone they're hosted on to let me download from.
nah reddit is actually pretty slow compared to /a/. Despite what many people think, I think more people go on 4chan then reddit.
It's the same shit with video games reviews nowadays.
Have you tried mangatraders?
Could be worse.
Please refrain from using "You", it makes me feel as if you think I'm the guy who wrote that.
You deserve to be banned twice.
/r/anime is slower than /a/, but I think reddit in total is bigger than 4chan in total
I don't know if I'm getting too old for this place, or if /a/ is going downhill, but I can barely stand browsing this place these days.
Also doesn't help that I'm increasingly abandoning anime in favor of following Momoiro and AKB48.
My average on MAL is 6.2 that's not including the stuff I dropped which I don't give a score to. The 1.2 pokints above average can be attributed mostly to me selecting stuff I'm interested in.
>not on a fucking online reader.
Thats where you are retarded. Online readers are length good, mangafox times are gone. There is no reason to develop other direction. If anything, CR does now Mangastream too.
There are no good threads on /a/ if you're not watching current anime. That's how things work.
This nigga knows his shit.
Not the poster you're replying to, but I still prefer reading on MComix in all honesty
But then again I do know where to download my manga
But all the current anime sucks.
Yeah, I had a look at /r/anime, sometimes go on there to discuss new released anime, but /a/ is a lot better in both quantity and quality
Then find a new hobby.
Well that's why there's the option to disable ratings weight, completely bypasses those who don't wish to transfer to a more accurate system.
Well, come back next season then.
If you're not, why do you come here to talk about anime if you don't like it?
Where do people who say they'll back next season go?
I still watch some anime, it's just sad to look at the Wake up Girls thread for example and see these people that know nothing about idols talking like they're informed.
Or how you can't have a thread about sports anime without people spamming about how all sports anime is yaoi shit in the thread.
That's why 4x2 point scales are superior
>putting manga on MAL
Now that, is just not worth the effort. It doesnt take very long to read a whole manga.
That view is either due to you being a faggot with ridiculous standards or simply because you don't actually watch good anime, which is often not what you're going to hear of unless you follow anime closely.
There is other thread beside current anime, and other stuff like manga instead.
Never heard of that scale before.
I just got into anime like a year ago after lurking /a/ for two years, you guys don't have bad tastes like others say so. I wouldn't have it any other way.
It is called backlog.
>(USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST)
It's 4 stars but you can give half stars, so there's a total of 8 points.
Why was he banned?
Thank you for existing mods.
What's the fucking difference
You free yourself from the grade % paradigm
He's talking about individual rating. Overall, it's fine to have an average exceeding 5/10 since you'll most likely only watch and finish shows that you don't think are shit, hence more skewed to above 5/10.
I prefer the five star system myself.
Ok, but why not just use the 5 star system if you're going to go there.
In that case why use MAL at all? How is it "worth it" for anime?
To stroke your e-peen, of course, and it saddens me that manga is no longer relevant in determining the size of your e-peen.
So are MAL profile threads banned now?
Because 5x2 is a 10 point system, and by then you're basically just ranking out of 10 anyway
I've been thinking people should rate things (anime, games etc) according to A/B/C/D/F. This is analogous to a 1-5 system, and can hit in-betweens such as B+ or C-. An average animu is a C grade, and people don't have a hard time agreeing that this is logical. Yet a C translates to 3/5 which can be rewritten as 6/10. Yet for some reason many people have a hard time actually giving things 6/10, because like was said, they see it like giving things a D, even though it fucking isn't.
Since we're familiar with letter grades, we should just do that instead of direct numeric because that clearly throws people off by default. Then again this is all semantics, if we all know that anything below 8/10 is shit according to a certain community or publication then it doesn't quite change things, it just makes it really pointless to even have number options below 5 or 6 if no one actually uses those (apart from 1/10 shitposting series they don't like).
I respect anyone who does read manga, even if it's a little since most anime are adaptations after all.
for keeping track of what you've watched and to rate in order to get some sort of perspective on it. i got one myself not too long ago because i realized i had problems remembering what i've seen
>for keeping track of what you've watched and to rate in order to get some sort of perspective on it
And clearly nobody wants to do that for manga because it's not worth it
Name bad manga adaptation into anime this season aside from Nisekoi.
What's wrong with DeadFish?
Rating out of 8 is no different. I'd still see 2.5 stars out of 4 as ~6/10
It means you're watching anime on a toaster
I'd argue to say that most people would say that a B is average. A C over here is looked down upon though.
I don't get it.
Or you can just stop rating things in general? It's pretty pointless in the long run when most people conflate their pure entertainment, on top of any other number of metrics. Then there's the whole long running series/ sequel bias.
I don't even use my (now obsolete) ratings for recommending things to people. It's more "would this person like this show" rather than me just getting people to watch stuff I like.
Who do you think Deadfish are? What do they do?
When did this happen?
Also, people will bitch about everything, but /a/ has some good moderation. Just look at /mu/ if you want to see what happens when a board lets itself be consumed by this type of shit.
TvTropes usually has one of the most interesting descriptions of an anime or manga series. And at least their layout is simple.
I lost all respect for that site with the whole lolicon debacle.
It just is.
>you realize that lots of normalfags go to /a/ for a sole reason its the only "fast" place in internet where you can post any topic and gets lots of repplies and discussion
Honest to god this probably the only reason I browse the 4chains, and lately I've pretty much substituted it with gatecrashing IRC channels instead.
I know. Moralfagging gone wild.
KissxSiss is too lolicon for them and they're stamping out ecchi they decide is porn.
A medium cannot inherently be mature or immature. You're full of shit.
And batoto is going the same way, all because they're getting too popular/mainstream.
Fuck, I'm honestly impressed that 4chan as whole actually managed to you know, stay as it is. Sure, we have normalfag boards but still.
Anime isn't a medium. Anime is nothing more than Japanese animation. Most TV anime are just high school comedies or silly action shows with mecha or kids with super powers.
The same can be said of the so-called live action tv that airs on the average tv channel. Shitty sit-coms, or in the case of HBOs, "it must be mature because it's got tons of VIOLENCE and TITS in it" even though the plot are even less thought out than anime.
Technically the medium is animation, but in most cases people distinguish it from any old animation because of the cultural lens and the format.
Otherwise wouldn't we have to make anime a genre with it's own sub-genres really similar to the regular genres?
No one in their right mind uses MAL to track manga. Lots of people use Mangaupdates.
MU is a lot more comprehensive, yes but MAL's layout is much better, to me at least.
Neither of these bans didn't break any rules at all. Are these mods from Tumblr or some other pussy website?
God damnit mods = fags.
*neither of these bans broke any rules at all
>tangentially related topic
>not against the rules
You are the faggot.
