Can we have a thread honouring the masterpiece that is Utena?
I never watched Utena because I can't deal with the non-lesbian sex.
But it's great.
It's alright I guess
My first tattoo was Utena
Well, at least you picked a good show.
Yuri Bear PV when?
What is it of? Rose Seal?
It was pretty good but I wouldn't go that far.
Fuck off to your concentration camp
Stallman likes it so it's a masterpiece.
>liking fat faggot freetard
Why was the movie so horrible?
But it's not? All those crazy visuals man.
Utena is wonderful.
Going to preorder the fig so hard.
ZETTAI UNMEI MOKUSHIROKU
Wait, it got a BD release?
Yeah. It's only on animebytes as far as I'm aware, but it's pretty damn gorgeous.
This is the best rip out there, way better than the one on AB.
When the boy who loved Utena's spazzy best friend (forgot name) was crying about how happy he would be with her and make her, and the villian of the arc wouldn't use him for a villian of the day, that made me cry like a bitch
>155GB with 2 seeds
I just watched episode 33 last night.
Its worth it, also raw but I uploaded the subs onto nyaa a while ago.
Only if you explain to me what it was about
>You truly are a good person.
Yeah, that was pretty brilliant.
He also didn't say "deeper, go deeper" so you knew something was up
Are there any comparisons with the AB version? It can't be that much different.
Conformity vs. Individuality
I downloaded both versions a while ago, but never made a comparison. I defiantly could tell the AB version was inferior though.
It's really really gay shit for tumblr SJW faggots
Don't forget sex!
So was Ohtori academy actually some sort of purgatory?
Looks like 16mm, and not worth the file size.
Well here's a png from the AB version.
Larry Wall digs it too.
I haven't worked up a crazy theory yet, but I'll be sure to incorporate that into it.
It's about revolutionizing the world
Somebody told me about it and it kind of makes sense. All the characters have that one flaw that traps them in the academy unless they get past it. Case in point, Utena and Ruka. Also, Akio pretty much coming out and saying he's Lucifer.
I'm doing a shit job at explaining it but you get the gist of it.
Nanami is mai daughteru.
Please respect her /a/.
No, no, it makes sense. My biggest struggle is choosing whether to interpret the movie as the true ending or as just a retelling.
It's more like a prison of immaturity. Once you truly become a mature, individualistic person you can leave.
Akio resigns to immaturity and covers it up with his false maturity of fucking everything that moves and making teenagers like him.
Well, he wanted his own harem
Those backgrounds man.
Ahh, haven't watched the movie yet because I just finished the series yesterday.
Is the movie good? I heard it's kind of like End of Evangelion with crazy visuals but somewhat nonsensical.
> I heard it's kind of like End of Evangelion with crazy visuals but somewhat nonsensical.
Pretty much, more nonsensical than you can imagine though.
The movie is very bizarre and worth watching even if you hate everything else.
I think it's very great personally, but I can see why people might not like it.
Oh, I like that explanation better.
So when Akio said that dueling arena was just an illusion...what the hell was everyone actually doing up there? Were the duels just a physical representation of everyone's inner conflicts?
This gif describes the movie perfectly>>100674197
It's also not related to the tv series Half the characters are missing
Is this series comparable to The Catcher In The Rye, in terms of what it tries to communicate to its viewers and the themes it presents?
Utena is fucking fab.
Movie Anthy > TV Anthy
TV Utena > Movie Utena
That sounds awesome
What do the changes to Akio's character in the movie signify?
Dropped it last week after the first two episodes. I liked the characters, but they had no interesting dialogue. I liked the art when it wasn't being recycled. I didn't like how only Utena was a little bit fleshed out in a way you would expect from a high school SoL anime and all the other characters just talked in praise of her or in exposition of these boring duels.
I'm not here to attack you guys, but I wonder why you like this show so much.
>It's also not related to the tv series
You sure about that?
Like some people said earlier in the thread it deals with things like maturity and individuality, so kind of, but it's more than that. Most of it has to do with sexuality and they tie all these themes together pretty well.
>I didn't like how only Utena was a little bit fleshed out in a way you would expect from a high school SoL anime
How on earth could you come to that conclusion after only two episodes?
>I wonder why you like this show so much.
You're going to have to slog through the first arc before you ever figure that out.
I wasn't a big fan of the beginning either. To me, it only really started getting interesting in the Black Rose arc which starts episode 14. It's definitely a barrier to entry but it's worth it.
It makes me sad that people generally dislike the Nanami episodes.
I think he's so different in the movie because he was dead all along and isn't actually significant in contrast to the TV series. You could possibly extrapolate this further that the movie is actually about Himemiya finding Utena after the TV end.
90% of the show is spent on characters other than Utena.
People dislike them? They're funny especially the cow one.
>Dropped it last week after the first two episodes.
The Africa one was the best, although she wasn't really in it much.
They complain about them being "filler".
Utena was one of the first anime I watched and I felt so smart when I got the period and breast references in the egg and cow episodes. I know that's not impressive, but I was young.
I still like the first version of it the best although they are all good. Utena had a pretty sweet soundtrack with all those sudden time signature changes.
I give movies 20 minutes to pique my interest, so I think 2 episodes is fair for an anime. Isn't Utena mostly a character driven show?
Is there a movie I can watch to give me a better impression of the show without spoiling too much? Or can the atmosphere of the show after the first arc be explained in terms of other movies/anime?
What are all the Nanami symbolizing?
Egg is pregancy
Cow is boobies
What are the others?
The thing about it though is that his sister is still trapped behind the Rose gate.
Akio is in this fucked up situation where if he was to leave he would have to abandon his sister, and he can't save her because he can't forgive her for what she did.
And the very REASON Anthy ever found someone who loved her is because Akio was doing what he was doing. Acting "immature".
egg is period, not pregnancy.
Did you really think Nanami was pregnant?
There's no way the movie could possibly make any sense without seeing the series.
Also if you do the math 20 minutes out say 2 hours is a much larger ratio than 48 minutes out of 39 episodes, so that's a false equivalency on your part.
I would love to see someone's reaction to the movie without having seen the series. Watch it, it'll spoil some things though.
I liked the egg one better actually.
Utena became the vehicle that would lead a Anthy to maturation overcoming her childish desires such as disney land
the movie was bad because the symbolism was blatant and thrown in your face like some gay ass that thinks he has the biggest most magnificent cock and is bragging about it by shoving it in your face.
TV series was good because though it was a cluster fuck with no one knowing what the hell was going on it ended up seeming coherent and having fan interpreted meaning, despite the only thing with meaning being the ending but then again they do say endings make or break shows/movies/books/literature
so in general Utena is shit but a fun ride
You can watch the onion prince episode first if you like it's self contained and one of the best episodes
>it was a cluster fuck with no one knowing what the hell was going on it ended up seeming coherent and having fan interpreted meaning
It's not that incoherent, just follow the characters not the plotline.
>Or can the atmosphere of the show after the first arc be explained in terms of other movies/anime?
The atmosphere doesn't actually change, you just get used to how it works, and it is really amazing. I can't really compare it much other anime except to some degree Penguindrum, but it's very theatrical yet honest and heartfelt.
>the symbolism was blatant
Why is this bad?
black rose arc was completely pointless did nothing for character development or plot impact
I mean how many episodes did they dedicate to this shit just to ignore it in it's entirety? writers had no clue what they were doing
It was there to develop the relationship between Utena and Akio.
It's important thematically, and good for that matter.
because it loses impact if you recognize it while it's happening
think of a horror video game where you watch the monster slowly walk toward you with it's claws out... actually that might be scary.
basically think about the ending being stated at the beginning of a film and constantly referenced until that ending happens. IT loses all impact and meaning and when something like the Utena Movie which solely runs on meaning waves it's meaning in your face it loses value
it didn't though they were the exact same as before the arc, not to mention there would be much better ways to go about it besides more duels
What? It introduces Akio and explores the characters of Shiori, Tsuwabuki, etc.
>it loses impact if you recognize it while it's happening
I disagree. If it anything, it increases the impact for me. But still, I never expected Utena to literally turn into a car nor all of the other trippy things. It's certainly blatant, but in a bizarre way that I like.
not particularly deeply more like passing remarks about the characters giving a very quick depiction of the character with very shallow motives, which would be alright if they were realistic but it's not very realistic. Also Akio was the chair of the school and could have been introduced almost anyway and have been more properly introduced. Hell Akio was introduced in episode 1 technically
I watched the first 15 minutes without subtitles to avoid any big spoilers. The scenes are set up much better and the imagery is really nice.
I'll try that.
I wasn't a big fan of penguindrum either, any I think it's a good comparison. I think we fundamentally like different things in anime.
I'd say the atmosphere changes drastically every arc. School council it has a lot of comic relief and is overall standard shoujo, black rose is very angsty and apathetic, Akio's car is feels very cool and 'mature' like when you first learn to drive or start having sex, end of the world feels truly mature as if the characters have become real adults.
How deep does it need to be for it not be shallow? I found their motivations more than suiting and realistic enough. Girls can be pretty mean you know.
>Akio was introduced in episode 1 technically
Well yes, but him interacting with Utena as the chairman was the important point. I think there's anything improper about his introduction like you are implying.
He was too badass in the TV show, I loved him because he was a suave pimp daddy but in the movie they made him weaker and less likeable, much more blatantly a villain. Which is contrary to the point I think.
I watched the movie with people who had never seen the series, they were confused as fuck and didn't get anything. Their reactions were really funny though.
I really liked how they changed the VA in the movie. It really makes an impact.
Has anyone here watched any film by Ikuhara's favorite director? In Utena, Ikuhara even used the same composer that Terayama did.
>Shūji Terayama (寺山 修司 Terayama Shūji?, December 10, 1935 – May 4, 1983) was an avant-garde Japanese poet, dramatist, writer, film director, and photographer.
Well shit. I should watch some then.
I'm in episode 3 and I really REALLY want to love this anime deeply, but if it's gonna have substantial amounts of hetero content, I'm afraid I'm gonna drop it like Enola Gay. I want Utena x Anthy in my OTP pantheon among Haruka x Michiru, Jeyne Poole x doge and all they had in Marimite.
It's gayer than most shows and it's still not gay enough for you?
God damn it /u/
I'm not easily satisfied.
Here's a much smaller encode that includes the movie and looks just fine. It's a raw, so you'll need separate subs, so here those are, too.
Well, ur a faget.
the sex scene make me feel sick
I forgot how hardcore and LEWD that disgusting, filthy episode was. God I hate this series.
Oh man, I lost my shit on that episode.
No. People will probably butcher it with, "utena is mai waifu, look! pics of me making her dinner :)" and shit.
This board is getting fucking more pathetic than even I can handle and that means something.
>None of that has happened
In fact, you hold the worst post in the entire thread so far.
>not making your waifu asparagus for lunch every day
0/10, would not duel with
Well there's a couple of shitposts that compete with him to be fair. But just ignore it.
Miracles can happen.
Also; the worst post would be you responding to me.
