Great Anime, or the greatest Anime?
Dunno, Getter Robo is pretty good.
Awesome, only watched the dub. I'm guessing the sub is much better.
Giant Robo is fucking awesome.
New Getter Robo is my FAVORITE anime and I STILL disagree with you and suspect you're a troll.
Greatest. It ranks up there with Kaiji and Monster in my book.
Fucking beutifall anime!
Is Giant Robo really THAT good or is it just a nostalgia thing on /a/'s part? I'm a getter robo fan but it's not really "best animu/mango" ever content, just tons of gory battles with some obvious messages on evolution.
Giant Robo hasn't aged at all, despite being hand drawn. That should say a lot about the quality of art and animation.
Never heard of it until now...I guess it was eclipsed by GL.
Fact: The director of Giant Robo also directed G Gundam.
It has a retro look ala Big O but if you do watch it, watch it for Ginrei's legs.
It's probably the only mech in existence that cries.
A lot of unique characters you come to care about, it is not all Giant Robot, heavy casualties on both sides, even main characters. Series end 1/2 way through with more good guys dead than bad guys.
Really needs a sequal!
Giant Robo has always been little known on anime sites, only oldfags or awesome newfags ever get to see it. Most assume it's Gundam mecha, but when they watch they see it's about ideals, martial arts, love friendship and tons of other awesome themes all woven into some of the most fuckawesome presentation ever.
I saw GR shortly after Gurren-Lagann 27 and was blown away.
Probably had something to do with GL being a mediocre mecha show.
Alright, downloading it now.
The presentation was rather weak, actually. I loved the animation and old-school storytelling, but I was really underwhelmed by the final three episodes.
Sadly, will never happen. GR was a total clusterfuck behind the scenes, which is why it took 7 years to release 7 episodes (it was supposed to take like, 2).
There was a new GR last year, unrelated to The Day the Earth Stood Still, it's probably the best we're going to get in terms of new GR material.
Gurren-Lagann is top of the genre. It's my favorite mecha show and along with Patlabor and movies the one I would really place among my top 20.
Watch more anime. Seriously.
>>10065035 Gurren-Lagann is top of the genre.
Which is why both are full of win.
I'm pretty sure I've watched more anime that you. Due to writing and direction, Gurren-Lagann is easily top of the mecha genre.
Like? The Gundam series? Macross? Space Adventure Cobra?
>>Due to writing and direction
You want good writing and direction in mecha, read fucking Muv-Luv.
Howabout Rahxephon, Evangelion, and Fafner?
Yeah, okay. You think that anime expert.
Oooo, how about MD Geist, Genocyber, Bubblegum Crisis or Angel Cop?
mediocre pedestrian yawnfests
>>Space Adventure Cobra?
Dear god, how can anyone stomach shit like that? That is on the bottom on my anime lists along with A Wind Called Amnesia, Armagedon and other early dubed manga shit.
Good anime, good artist
TTGL is the best mecha series out there.
Only Diebuster and NGE come close.
Everything else is way too niche or simple to rival it.
Ah, then I guess we must dig deep.
Hay now! Genocyber was shit. MD Geist I saw but remember nothing about it, so was probally shit and Angel Cop I have no idea.
Bubblegum Crisis however is awsome.
Go practice a little. Then come back.
BC is at least watchable, but the rest is boring.
Fafner is awful. End of Evangelion is brilliant, true. RahXephon is average other than episode 15, which is a masterpiece.
whatabout BGC Tokyo 2040?
Giant Robo: 10/10 (May be being nostaliga fag)
Evangelion: 9/10 (One of my favs)
TTGL: 7/10 (Nice for "lulz is forgot mah brain" and "Ohhhh! Fan Service!").
>>RahXephon is average
Go home and be a family man.
Gurren-Lagann does anything but forget its brain. Try watching it again.
I hate when people giving ratings to posts, can't people stop that already?
Sorry but "Lulz! Spiral Energy that can overcome any obstacle it encounters including the Laws of Physics and the Big Crunch is BS". Relies too much of the Japanese principal of “Superior spirit can overcome any problem, including superior numbers, superior skill and superior strategy”.
Just a cheap ripoff of getter rays anyway.
>>10065455 Just a cheap ripoff of getter rays anyway.
By superior etc, you mean that story about a Japanese soldier that tried to slice an Allied tank in half with a katana during WWII?
TTGL did it better.
No, it didn't. Not by a long shot.
No way in hell. GL didn't even bring anything new to the concept. Fuck off.
Giant Robo: 8/10
A truly impressive animation and overall visual design, simplistic but accomplished theme development and excellent, quirky, characterization. Some episodes come across as badly executed and the multiple "plot-twists" are mostly useless and farfetched.
Even with its subpar script, the atmospheric qualities inherent to the direction remain as Anno taking some the more underrated elements in Gunbuster to a new degree. Awesomely hides its low-budget through brilliant short-cuts and the conceptualization behind the characters is very memorable.
A very individualized and charismatic visual design, strong take on archetypes and an excellent plot construction. Through its run, it does not only borrow elements from old-school storytelling, Japanese Kabuki theater or Gainax’s mastery of atmosphere, but ties them together into an extremely accomplished work.
I remember being told about it but can't remember much, please enlighten us anon.
Woah, I almost raged.
Once a year since I got Giant Robo on VHS we sit down a couple of guys and watch it. We know the lines by heart. It's almost religious. Some of the others don't even watch anime normally.
They're completely different. Similar superficialities, completely different purpose to the actual content.
I'm serious. Try to argue logically at least.
Same, decent troll is decent.
Already know you're trolling. A for effort, though.
Giant Robo has a very amateurishly put together structure, even when the actual dialog writing is ace.
>Awesomely hides its low-budget through brilliant short-cuts
I have been saying this for years. If there's one thing I like about Evangelion is that the direction was great enough to hide budget problems.
Whatever, be free to believe what you want. I believe Gurren-Lagann to be superior to Giant Robo and have actual valid reasons for doing so. You will just have to live with that on your conscience forever.
Giant Robo: 8/10
Amazing animation which makes references to older robot shows, the story would have been great if there wasn't so many plot twists
Breaking away from other mecha shows by being neither Super Robot or Real Robot, great action (especialy in EoE) mixed with good drama. Pity the characters tend to be unlikable, and the series ending was crap.
Gurren Lagann: 9.5
Great, stylized animation, great characters and extremely well directed. Manages to have a plot thats easy to follow, but also has deeper meanings if your willing to look hard enough.
Getter Robo Armageddon: 10/10
It has fucking Go Nagai directing it. Characters where insanely GAR and hotblooded before such things became popular.
Exactly. The "plot-twist" ruined Giant Robo. The only worthwhile one was the villian's plan being actually beneficial for mankind.
Your own delusions aren't 'valid reasons', but I'll leave it at that. You really disappointed me.
Which "delusions"? Point them out, please. I honestly enjoyed Gurren-Lagann more, both artistically and in terms of sheer fun. Try not to force your opinions as absolute fact on others.
>>I honestly enjoyed Gurren-Lagann more
>>Try not to force your opinions as absolute fact on others.
Take your own advice, fag.
GL is the new EVA.
But I'm not forcing anything on you. I'm just saying that my own opinion is NOT A TROLL.
god damnit we have ONE giant robo thread for once and STILL people post about fags, GL and troll.
No reason to visit /a/ anymore...
What the fuck. TTGL was excellent.
Grow up emo fags.
Blame it on >>10065007. Oh well, it was inevitable.
Listen, it all depends on what kind of pilot you want to have in a /m/ series. Do you want the hot-blooded, we-can-do-anything-if-we're-mad-enough pilots like Kamina and Domon? Or do you prefer the wimpy, emo, I'm-not-good-enough-so-I-shouldn't-try pilots like Shinji and Kira?
I prefer gentlemen like Simon.
Can I have someone in the middle please?
I want to watch something enjoyable regardless of those things.
TTGL brought fresh air to a stale genre. Giant Robo did too, but was way too niche.
GR-Armageddon was on the other hand very lame apart from a few scenes.
Personally, I'd like it if there were more methodical fighters who use the power of LOGIC and SKILLS to get through their struggles. I don't know of any, however. Most, if not all the smart guys are tacticians, which I find to be a shame, because proper fighting itself actually requires lots of brains and technique.
That would be the military types like Heero Yuy or Sosuke Sagara.
The first three episodes of GR-Armageddon were directed by the same guy as Giant Robo and were pretty awesome.
Then they fired him and the show turns into total shit.
Hmm... Your right but I don't really like Heero that much, Duo was much more likable.
However, he got his revenge by making a badass show for sunrise!
What? ANN says nothing...
I know, that's why it failed to be epic.
ANN has had incorrect info on that for a long time, I've just never bothered to submit a correction (nor has anybody else I guess)
Imagawa mentioned it a couple of years ago at a convention, he basically said "The circumstances behind me leaving were pretty unpleasant, so I didn't allow them to use any of my story or ideas. I hope the episodes that followed turned out badly."
