Asians, being a subspecies of human, see less color.

This is because their eyes, being so slanted, automatically remove certain wave frequencies; think of it as always having sunglasses on, but instead of darkening everything, they just remove certain colors.

This was a common problem when Japan was first contacted by westerners a la Admiral Perry. Many small wars broke out, where one party would accuse the other of trying to scam them out of the use of precious inks by claiming a garment was blue or purple or whatever.

One famous example was when a shogunate's kingdom was burnt to the ground, after he offered and sent a wealthy officer's daughter a kimono as a gesture of goodwill, in the colors of their family's crest (blue and yellow). It came out black and and tan, and the officer was so offended, that he reportedly personally murdered the shogun with a bayonet he had painted blue.

It was later discovered that his family's historical enemy bore a crest which was black and tan, and he thought the shogun was intentionally insulting him.

Allow me to conclude: The reason you see so many various hair colors in anime is not to distinguish characters (Asians are very adept at distinguishing sharp, subtle shape differences: Just see their hieroglyphic bullshit), but because they can't tell which markers they are using. Approximately 28 percent of the Asian population worldwide cannot see color, with 54 percent of that total estimated to live in or around Tokyo.

This is further correlated with high-rates of autism; at least 95 percent of all mangaka and anime artists are theorized to be both near-color blind and mildly autistic.

They can see shades more readily than they can distinguish between colors. As was mentioned, Love Lab has a soft color palette; it's tinted compared to something like Watamote. However, it is difficult to impossible for most Asians to distinguish between a light blue and a light gray.

Also, due to western influence, and the rage of western marketers at the odd hair colors and eye tones, the Japanese have become aware of their problem, and usually try to overcome their color-sensing issues by carrying portable spectrometers with them in their pocket (This shoots a laser beam briefly at a surface, and measures the wavelength of the reflected light; a small screen denotes the number and popular term for the color). These are usually called " Manga guns" informally.

Love Lab, purely a production for otaku in Japan, and not meant for western eyes, was produced entirely without these spectrometers, or with western eyes overseeing them.

One exception, I might add, to this color thing is red; Asians can see red much better than most, because of it's lower-frequency. It's why everything in China is red, and why the Japanese flag is just white with a red spot on it.

Actual black is the absolute absence of light.

"Black" as experienced by humans is a function of the limits of the human eye.

Your image still falls under the blue category but with out paint or some other program you wouldn't know that, and there is so little that I don't think it would matter. I do, however, understand why they would not shade her hair entirely black, but I think they went overboard with the coloring on this one.

Bonjour, my name is Natsuo Maki.

I’m a 16 year old ojou-sama (aristocrat girl for you foreign gentlemen). I sew costumes and embroidery, and spend my days perfecting my mastery over the arts of love. (Nape Exposure, Kerchief Dropping, Toast-In-Mouth)

I train with my dakimakura every day, this superior pillow can win the heart of the coldest maiden, because it is loaded with thousands of silky white feathers, and is vastly superior to any other cushion on earth. I drew my ideal lover on it two years ago, and I have been perfecting my luscious kiss every day.

I speak English fluently, both British and the American accents, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about being a proper waifu and their social etiquette, which I follow 100%

When I finally find my lover, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious college while living with him in an apartment. I hope we can do many… things… together, intimately!

I own several pieces of lewd underwear, which I wear in bed with nothing else. I want to get used to wearing them before I move in with my lover, so we can segue straight to the pleasantries. I bow to handsome boys around my age and speak as adorably as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck with my Love Labs!

And so we learned that black is technically not a human hair color. Blue hair has been a natural hair color the whole time.

>>
>>100644164

No pun intended, it's not so black and white. Color is a gradient, not a boolean. It's not just either blue or black. Anyone saying it is 100% black is fucking lying. The question is, is it blue enough to call it blue and not black? Because there is clearly a blue tint to it.

If we wanna go by the natural categories of human hair color, it would be considered black.

If we wanna argue about exact thresholds based on color analyzers in microsoft paint, then we're going to be arguing forever because theres no concrete way to define when something on the line of a gradient stops being 1 color and starts being the other.

Yeah, sure, but I don't see how you can not clearly tell that that is a dark blue. If that color had been posted outside of any context other than hair and you showed it to anyone they'd say it was blue.

I call it what I've called it this whole time. Dark gray with a bluish tint.

I assert that gray is it's own category of color. You assert that it isn't and that just having a blue tint constitutes categorizing it as blue. I dunno where else we can go from here.

It's lower on the X axis of the spectrum but also closer to true blue on the Y axis of the spectrum.

And comparing the percentages of the 3 primaries, Navy blue is 49% blue, while Makis hair is only 40% blue.

>>
It';s just a common convention to highlight blacks with blue and over time it evolved into actual blue hair.

I think they may have picked that slate color because it meshes with how light the other colors are better than real black would have
>>
It's certainly in the blue spectrum, but very close to black on the hue chart. And that's just because it allows for shading and outline definition in the lineart. And IMHO pure black would look out of place in a show with a color palette that is otherwise lighter/pastel colors. The alternative is to use white/grey as the outline color.

This is why characters with white/silver hair in anime often have a light blue tint to it.

Here's another example: Kagari in WcW also has black hair, but as you can see, it uses a dark blue as the midtone.
