What was your gateway anime?
Naruto, streamed the entire thing and even watched some 3 parts on youtube.
>inb4 One piece
>inb4 Dragon ballz
I think it was Excel Saga, Hellsing or Fullmetal Alchemist
Only this anon knows my eternal shame.
Kill la Kill.
FMA started it, but everything after that was hit or miss until TTGL. That was around the time I met /a/ and so ended my life that never began.
What do i win?
turn a gundam
So many underage.
Samurai champloo, still one of my fav`s to this day.
Didn't think anyone else was introduced by Clannad.
I watched Naruto and One Piece when I was younger but Clannad was what set me down watching more anime,
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Sekirei most recently, huge tits. Can't go wrong.
High school of the dead
pretty much this and vision of escaflowne
of course I watched Dragonball and so on, but at this time I didn't really differentiate between comic and anime
You want to know what I find personally very funny? I can remember when DBZ was a gateway anime for kids.
Times have changed, and someone can claim it now, but back on usenet when some kid would wander in and start talking about it we would have a good laugh before showing them some classics.
it's been a while...
Mine was technically Clannad as well.
I read Katawa Shoujo, which led to reading Clannad, which lead to watching the anime.
I find this hard to believe
Came pretty close to becoming a waifufag right there with Meia, but we didn't quite click. Ended up with Rukia as my waifu, who I later found out has the same VA. So I think my RL waifu is Fumiko Orikasa.
Probably Bebop or jellyion
One Piece. Loved the PS2 game.
and not the Robotech version
Evangelion. Oldfag here
which meant the best girl won in the end
Sailor Moon, then Naruto.
My entry was bland as fuck.
Tenchi Muyo way way back in the day on Toonami.
To love ru
>capcha 'gynecologist dedoden
Tenchi Muyo! GXP
DragonballZ linkin park amvs
Kill la Kill
Nichijou for anime in general, then Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai for actually downloading and watching an entire series.
First anime I actually considered an anime. English 4kids shit prior to that didn't count, imo.
I was. I watched Naruto and Pokemon and all this shit as a kid too.
Then with 12-13 I watched the late night animes from MTV Germany. Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd GIG, Gantz, Wolf's Rain and they were awesome too.
A few months ago my brother and a friend forced me to watch Madoka and I liked it but it wasn't my gateway animu. My brother had shittons of animu on his external HDD so when I was bored I started Clannad to see if a cartoon could make me cry and it did.
Every since then my animu spree started and I finished Madoka twice ever since then and now I don't just like it - I love it.
Unfortunately I started with elfen lied seemingly like OP... I rewatched it and realized what a shit-teir anime it was
>inb4 butthurt fan base
I remember watching the fansubs for this when it first came out. I dropped it in the first two or three episodes, but I can't remember why.
Can you take your nostalgia goggles off for a moment and give me a subjective opinion on it?
I watched anime before but what got me was Gundam 00 S1, the art was beautiful and the music was great.
Angel Beats was the one that got me watching stuff seriously. I watched the odd show before it though.
Every time I see another clannad brother it makes me happy. You guys know what's up and know what we've seen.
>A few months ago
I watched kenshin and tenchi muyo I believe it was called back then when they aired on toonami/adult swim
then inuyasha which I liked then nothing until 2007 when /v/ had rec threads daily because of ttgl .
Everybody has to start somewhere, and at least he isn't spouting off memes, or being a try hard or lying about how long he has been here.
The first anime I conciously downloaded was Naruto, before that I watched the stuff on TV (pokemanz, medabots, db series)
Remember those faggots doing handseals during class breaks? That was us.
Gundam and One Piece
Then KS led me to Clannad.
First anime I saw:
Pokemon or Porco Rosso
First anime I watched in its entirety:
First Manga I bought(several volumes of, too):
Ranma or Inuyasha, don't remember which.
First online download:
I still remember being amazed that you could watch anime on youtube when I first found the site.
Not that guy, but it was my gateway too.
You may have dropped it due to forced all the ecchi scenes were, that was a major problem.
Sailor Moon when it first aired in the 90s over here in Germany
naruto and bayblade.
when I grew up
>best mistake I've ever made
>a-am I fitting in yet guyz?
madoka magicaI've only been on /a/ since december 20th
Escaflowne, saw on adult swim even before seeing digimon
I don't go on there I just got linked that by a friend.
Time to kill yourself
The best one, son.
Dragon Ball (or Kiki's Delivery Service, if movies count)
The first series I tried watching online was Wolf's Rain.
I found a Gundam Wing VHS at a yard sale in 97, never been the same since.
Fucking hate my life.
Don't worry, the only people that really care are those who want to fit in.
Ghost in the Shell
Welcome, and for future reference, since there is significant distaste for the users of tumblr on /a/, it would be easier for you if when you save your pics you found there you renamed them to avoid conflict.
First one I watched was Princess Mononoke but it was Stand Alone Complex which really got me into it.
First show I ever watched back in the mid 90's. No regrets.
why can't we all get along, anon?
Because people who want to get along do not announce their newfaggotry
How the fuck did you manage that? I remember when it was airing it was niche as fuck, and that if you were getting into anime after that, you would need to be recommended it to find something that is discussed that infrequently.
I can remember when SciFi channel broadcast that.
Did you see the HD rerelease that came out a few months ago?
You don't have to impress anyone anon.
I started with Ecchi actually. Queens Blade if I remember correctly
Nausicaa, my childhood was full of anime, I never had to get into it
I have shown mushishi to tons of people who don't know about anime, they all loved it
I'm sorry man, I couldn't even watch that for the tits
blood c. damn, that was just over 2 years ago.
My fucking nigger. Still the best fantasy anime, I re-watch it every year.
I consider it one of my favorites, but in general it is not something I see or hear discussed often. The only reason it has been relevant in the last few months has been because of the OVAs
I don't know if I'd call it a "gateway anime" since I never sought out other series because of it, but Outlaw Star is the series I have the most nostalgic love for.
I guess if anything were a "gateway anime" for me, it would be Angel Beats since that's kind of the series that started this recent anime kick I've been on, but timing was a pretty big factor there too.
I'd watched a few on Toonami beforehand, and was hella into Pokemon each day when I got home from school when I was a young thing, but the first I actually went out of my way to download and watch on my own was either Trigun or .hack//Sign, both around the same time. Saw one or two episodes and didn't want to wait to see the rest.
Pretty sure .hack//Sign was the first I watched subbed too, at the time listening to Japanese voices annoyed me but I couldn't find the dub on Kazaa, had to force myself at first but by the end of the show didn't mind so much and was used to it.
Sad no one posted this yet.
Elfen Lied and Shakugan no Shana.
Lucky Star actually burned me out on anime for like two years, then I got back in somehow; through some one shot manga, I think.
The first Hellsing anime, Death Note, and Elfen Lied.
Mononoke hime, Castle in the sky and Spirited Away.
All three really marked my childhood, took me a while to realize how cool my dad was to make me and my sister watch these back then. I think he was really into anime. Died when I was 14, each time I see a good anime I think of him, like "man I wish he could see that he would've loved it."
Wen't to the ghibli museum in Mitaka last year, amazing place too.
Do people do this
I still love it and there's nothing you can do to stop that, /a/.
I watched Elfen Lied when my power level was relatively low, and I only had like 10-20 shows under my belt. I actually liked it a lot. Was really the first show I ever watched with such gratuitous nudity or gore so at the time I didn't really even notice how forced it all was. Still I rewatch it every year or so and it gives me nice feelings of nostalgia. I wish I could go back to those days where it seemed like there was an endless amount of new great shows for me to discover just around the corner.
Shit. Okay, .hack//Sign is a close second to Outlaw Star in terms of nostalgia. Other honourable mentions: Yu Yu Hakusho and Inu Yasha
I like the anime better than the manga, so get equally fucked
I do, but then again I saw it as a bootleg fansub on VHS before it was licensed.
I think you need to know lucky star will have no plot before you watch it and just watch it for shenanigans... Plus I think you have to have a thing for lolis
Sorry, "Princess Mononoke". It's just a question of habit I guess, always called it like that.
Saw Sailor Moon and DBZ as a kid
Gateway was probably Code Geass or Elfen Lied.
Then I found the good shit like SEL and Haibane Renmei.
Haven't really seen too much more though. It's a pretty weak medium as far as thought provoking stuff goes and I like that sort of thing in my entertainment.
Do you feel euphoric?
I actually watched it for the first time not even half a year ago. I cried buckets. Still do.
But you called the others by their english names, at least be consistent.
I actually really liked LS, but I was just ready to be done for a while.
Now I will never be at rest
Death Note and Elfen Lied
>I like the anime better than the manga
What the actual hell is wrong with you? The manga actually tied up the story to some extent. The anime made it like half way through then pretty much decided 'fuck this I give up' in a way that was in the same ballpark as NGE.
I showed it to people not because it's a great show, but because
>it's the right level of foreign to be cool without scaring people off
>its dub is watchable so people who aren't used to subs don't need to read
>it isn't all dark but is still serious
>the animation is obvious but isn't so ridiculous that people call it a cartoon
>and mostly, it is way better because of the animation, so people who dont watch anime see why people like it
It works especially well on the "RRRR EVERYTHING IS SO DEEP WOW" crowd, who are usually the type of people who will ask to give them an alternative to retarded western TV,. They usually will treat it as an art piece
Oh yeah, lucky star was wonderful. It was actually quite similar to k-on!
Ab#nother Elfen Lied fag here.
>What the actual hell is wrong with you
Neither of them are any good, so who cares.
I am consistent with my own logic. I call a series by what it was introduced to me as. I saw the fansub of Ippo first, so I call it that instead of Fighting Spirit, for example.
I'm currently watching Shana. The dub is giving me mixed feelings, but I surprised myself with how much I like it.
How come I'm the only anon who has Rurouni Kenshin as their gateway anime? This always happens in these threads
What's wrong with liking interesting plots and well developed, realistic characters?
No need to go calling someone a neckbeard just because they don't find all poorly written adolescent fantasies immersive.
I guess I was about 7 years old, it was a public broadcasting.
Meant to tag >>100594358
Probably Attack on Titan
Read the manga.
you'll cry even more buckets
I had my 18th b-day on that day!
Glad you liked the show. It's a masterpiece
Mah nigga, back then I was ashamed of liking it.
School Rumble, I regret nothing.
I plan to. Not reading the spoiler'd text because fuck that.
chuunibyou demo koi ga shitia ren
>Neither of them are any good, so who cares.
You're on /a/. You care about pointless bullshit or you wouldn't be here.
Elfen Lied, 18 months ago
Dragon Ball 18 years ago, the chilhood count?
Evangelion. I didn't understand shit.
Still the best love story I've ever seen. Also, the most satisfying "best girl actually won".
OP here. Why exactly is there so much hate against Elfen Lied? It was my first and I'm glad it was. Before this I thought all anime was like Dragon Balls. Even made me cry. It will always be close to my heart.
Dragon Ball Z
yes i watched Z before the original series
COME AT ME!
I feel old
shingeki no kyojin
I guess I just liked the way it was done better, save for the end.
The only thing the Manga had was that waifu tier incontinent girl.
The Manga and the Anime both had shitty endings, so I don't see why that has any bearing except maybe for the "feels" or whatever.
Better late than never :)
I would hug you, I totally forgot about this anime and the games
Sailor Moon, Pokemon, to some extent Digimon.
So like, have all of you only been watching anime for a small portion of your lives? did you discover it all at once and realize how great it was?
was it a magical moment?
I always watched Ghibli movies, Pokemon, One Piece, and a bit of Dragon Ball as a kid. I just kept moving to what was around and what was more my age, kept watching Ghibli, watched more shonen, then some ecchi, and so on
When kids at middle school were discovering porn, I preferred yuri hentai
Yep. Exactly this.
because, child porn?
Because it tries too hard to be dark and the characters are uninteresting as hell. The only one I found myself caring for was Nana.
I've only watched the anime, and I've heard the manga is what makes the series, but just coming from the anime, it was absolute shit. There was no pacing, retarded as fuck characters and a god awful dub (if you're into that). I thought it was halfway decent until I rewatched it. Anyone who says the anime is good either can't look past the first scene or is too nostalgic for the manga.
Those are 90s anime, how can you feel old?
>Pokemon, One Piece, and a bit of Dragon Ball
Those don't count because they seem just like any other cartoon as a kid.
You can only fit so much in 13 episodes.
tfw there was a time when I made fun of my friends watching anime and I legitimately thought MLP was better than anime
I'm glad that shit is out of my life now. I won't ever want to have to do anything with this mental gay shit ever ever ever ever again
Why would you ever watch the dub of anything?
What the fuck is wrong with people.
Code geass was the one that got me into anime.
I did watch some shonenshit before it though.
because i almost have wizard powers
My first one with Naruto, but I was first conscious of probably Ouran High School Host Club. Lucky Star was when I started seriously watching anime.
I actually don't watch dub. I've watched dubbed scenes on YouTube and nearly fell over in pain. It's like they grabbed hobos off the street and asked them to voice act for a couple of cans of beer
I started watching anime when I was 18, kinda wish it was earlier when I actually had time to marathon stuff.
Games? I've read the volumes of the manga that are out in English, didn't know about games...
I did see some bit of Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Naruto and whatnot on TV too, but DN Angel is the first series I actually sat and watched the entirety of.
Though, in middle school I was still reading fantasy 24/7, until I had managed to see most good translated into my language series. Around 8th or 9th grade I finished up all the good webcomics too, and Megatokyo led me to anime...
>sharing the same board with mlp guys
Because it wasn't that good of a series, but when it aired it received a lot of attention from people with little to know knowledge of anime. If tumblr existed ten years ago it would have been really popular on their. Anyways, a lot people fanboy/girled it hard during their chuuni phase, and when they got further into anime there was a backlash from the communities they merged into. In typical fashion a lot of people trying to fit in started to talk shit about it and either denied they watched it, or said that they hated it. As a result it became ingrained into a lot of anime sites culture that it was this horrible piece of shit and you should be embarrassed to watch it, when really it was a pretty mediocre melodrama and babbies first gore.
I watched it when it came out because there wasn't a whole lot going on that season, and it was fun to see something that was so unabashedly cheesy, but the people it brought to the board were pretty bad. If I had to compare them to anyone I would say they were like SAO fans that came in after the third episode.
>or is too nostalgic for the manga
Which is just as bad?
EL was just not great all around
I was very aware it was from japan, I really liked it over the other cartoons, I moved to more and more obviously Japanese stuff
I had older siblings to show me
I dont remember what it was, or how I managed to do so (since I doubt it would air on TV), but there was stuff I would watch subtitled as a kid
if you're a south east asia fag you are surrounded by anime and can watch it on tv. i think eva was the first time i was like whoa, this "anime is serious dark bussiness" and started reading up on the lore on these terrible angelfire fan sites. after watching end of Eva i was depressed for a month and was like what the hell did i just watch??!?
>ctrl+f pizza cats
That and the Last Unicorn pretty much turned me into an animu fan years down the road.
>She's naked, so it's porn.
I have been watching anime since the mid 80's. I am in my mid 30's now.
u watch some gay shit bro
My bad, I saw DNA and I thought about DNA^2, I don't even know the one you posted.
Still thanks since I'm going to marathon my DNA .
The original fullmetal alchemist
I watched it during my last year of school, I stopped studying, playing video games, working out and all physical activity and I now I have no job and shit grades. I regret nothing.
As a default, I prefer watching dubs because I don't like dividing my attention between the visuals and subtitles. If the quality is too painful, (I have a certain tolerance level for shit like that) I switch over to subs.
Thank you for this. I think it's clear the only reason I like it is because of nostalgia and come on, Lucy.
>>tfw there was a time when I made fun of my friends watching anime and I legitimately thought MLP was better than anime
The last unicorn is anime?
I remember that, just thought it was some western cartoon, didn't think much about it at the time
It's good, you should watch it. Kind of melodramatic, and kind of for 14 years old, but still pretty good.
And I should see DNA again, too.
First show that I ever watched was Champloo
The show that got me on the slippery slope was PSG.
I likes the code geass dub.
>tfw there was a time when I made fun of my friends watching anime and I legitimately thought MLP was better than anime
As expected from a Sayakafag.
It's pretty easy to quickly read the subs and then watch what's going on, but I see what you're trying to say
Jesus Christ man
MACROSS. Then I spent years pissed off because the local tv station won't air the last episode.
Because we're old, that's why. That show was popular close onto 15 years ago.
Some dubs are actually okay IMO... I actually think the English Ryuk from death note was better, but that was the only better part in that show. Likewise, I think the English goku is better. Yada yada
i used to call weebs the scum of the earth and look at me now
Now are you talking actual Macross, or Robotech?
1st anime in general: Vicky the Viking or Maya the Bee
1st anime that i watched knowing it is anime: Pokemon, Digimon, Ranma
After that i watched pretty much every shit that aired on TV and stopped watching anime with Naruto starting to become popular. Many people loved it - I always hated it.
I lost interest in anime but got back around 2006 for Code Geass. Today i watch 20 shows every season.
I'm by admission a slow reader and tend to autize over small/missed details, so that also has something to do with it, probably.
Have you ever considered investing some time in learning Moon?
An hour a day, and at most in nine months you wouldn't need subs dubs or scans. Plus it is really satisfying to know that you taught yourself a whole language.
It was animated by Topcraft who did Nausicaa a few years later, but aimed at a western audience. I watched it when I was like.. 8 or so, and even then I could tell it felt different than the usual cartoons I had in terms of presentation and animation.
Look at what? You have probably watched 20 or so anime, followed 2-3 season and you will drop your new hobby in 1-2 years.
Just like you did with mlp.
Just like you did with the thing you were into before mlp, probably a vidiogame.
Just like you did with the things before that videogame.
What's another old man doing hanging out with all these kids?
although technically the first anime I ever watched was Gigantor. Unfortunately it was so long ago that the only thing I remember about it was that my VCR ate the tape when I was like, 3.
ikr? If I had a gun I don't know if I'd still be writing this here and now.
That's a little cynical, but I kind of have to agree. I have been watching anime since I can remember, and have been talking about it online since the usenet days. Honestly, most people who don't have a life long love of it get really into it for a few years, and then get bored with the cliches and drop it.
Try this for rage: TV stations in Alberta took the set of tapes for Robotech and sent different ones to different locations. And they never gave a fuck when people complained.
Please get a gun.
Because it's interesting to learn how these kids got into Anime.
Yeah, I have a thing for language learning too, so logically it's something I plan on doing. Still just wetting my toes with the grammar/trudging through the kana atm, but progress is coming.
1h/day for nine months? That sounds a bit unrealistic for a language so foreign/maybe if literacy isn't a goal?
Even if... Why do you care? You can also have watched 200 anime and drop it sometime. I'm certainly sure I won't since I pumped too much money into Anime when I started half a year ago.
MLP is the biggest, most cancerous shit in the universe. When I saw a MLP x Madoka crossover while scrolling through google image results I nearly puked. That fanbase is the biggest shit ever made.
The consensus seems to be SnK.
I think I am outta here.
Twelve Kingdoms. I'm suprised nobody has mentioned it yet.
That is some fucked up shit. Did you guys at least get the whole series eventually? When I was a kid the station that was broadcasting it in my area dropped it on the final season. Blue Balls to the extreme.
I can relate. I have been in this thread since the beginning, watching it auto update. It's fun seeing how people react to each other and occasionally tell a little bit about the last few decades of anime if they are interested. Rarely does this kind of thread go so peacefully so I am trying to keep everything on an even keel.
That's a pretty unusual gateway. I'll assume someone recommended it to you as that's a really low-key title when it was released.
DBZ and that baby shit don't count cause dubs
Started with this shit airing and it ruined my christmas
I knew there that I was at home
Underwater Ray Romano
FMA 2003. Thank you Canal+
Most likely to take you with me - if even.
When I think about it then... Nah probably not. Too much anime to watch for both of us.
First thing I ever watched was beebop, like 2 years ago.
I dunno, I heard it as an anecdote from someone. Never got the show where I lived.
>this actually explains why the Madokafanbase is so shit
>they consist of MLPfags
This thread is disgusting
How so, people getting in on shows to recent/whatever for your liking?
Stop posting Sayaka pls.
Angel Beats was dipping my foot in the water, before that the closest I got to anime was my /e/ folder
Madoka was my cannonball after testing the water
There's probably some overlap as those fanbases seem mostly trendwhores anyway.
We didn't. Year after year of rerun, I prayed that they would show the last episode because of all that intense build up. Never happened.
I finally got to see it at 2009 thanks to a friend who bought the entire box set. And to my rage, I didn't know they made a season two out of Robotech!
Usually it devolves into a flame war.
The only times /a/ becomes civil is either discussing Hentai or if there are no shitposters around.
I can confirm this. the girl who showed me madurkadurka is a tumblr/homestruckfag of a cancerous degree.
I have my personal theory: there are people who like anime regardless, and people who like anime because they don't "fit in", hence they start picking up a nuber of hobbies.
Eventually they will pick up anime and drop it after a while.
Most of the time this kind of people don't even enjoy or know what they are doing, they just don't have any alternative.
That's pretty much why I think you are scum, but ehy I might be wrong
Probably would have to say Medabots
>also got sucked into said fandom
>brought out some autismal behaviour in me
>went to cons (THOSE cons)
>left the fandom with a matured awareness of balancing enthusiasm and open appreciation of media with respect for others
Could feel worse.
You are now Tannasin
Listen MLP has a horrid fanbase, and right now you are ashamed as fuck to be associated with it. In a few years you won't even care, and after a few more you will look back on it and laugh. Getting hostile about it isn't going to do anything good for you. You don't need to reaffirm how shitty MLP's fanbase is since it is apparent to everyone.
That said trying to distance yourself from it and fit in here by spending lots of money on your hobby is only going to leave you feeling burnt out and bitter when you start getting diminishing returns. You will begin to expect everything to be as fresh and as enjoyable as when you first started watching, and that isn't going to happen. If you want to get the most out of this hobby I recommend that you don't buy into hype, and that you learn that 90% of anime is built on cliches and while they are funny the first time you see them they get old fast. Don't expect anything and you will never be disappoint. Don't be afraid to watch everything that comes out, even if it sounds like you won't enjoy it. Be ready to drop anything that you don't like, because why force yourself to watch something you don't want.
gelbooru introduced me to meduca
Sayaka-chan is best girl after all
I still keep up with Homestuck sometimes, but only begrudgingly. I haven't really liked it since the trolls were introduced.
Problem Sleuth was way better.
i'm not going to deny that at all because its a real possibility
but i'm ashamed to say there was nothing before mlp, it was the first thing i really got into
Seikon No Qwaser.
I'm not joking.
Surprisingly very little Gundam Wing going on in this thread... or toonami shows in general.
Oh god, that must've been priceless.
I know it does, but when I see newfriends in here and they are not being obnoxious shits trying to fit in I want to shelter them and steer them towards being a better type of poster before they become try hards.
Not if you like MLP.
Not the guy but didn't it air years back on g4 or something. Either way its a good entry level anime.
Also Gunbuster, remember it was streaming off a site called sputnik when I first got an internet connection.
If it counts, Naruto when I was in elementary. I'd watch it on toonami along with DBZ and Zatch Bell.
I also did some horribly cringe-worthy stuff at school related to Naruto back then. I'm glad I grew out of my autism. Mostly
I can't remember if I had a favorite character or not, but I liked some of the powers they showed off
Sasha's a fag though
I don't spend money et cetera just to fit in here. I just love Anime (but only the ones which aren't that generic at least in my opinion. Fan service and ecchi shows won't even get touched by filthy casul me).
I might not watch 20000 shows at once. I pick the ones I find interesting and finsih/drop them. I don't force myself to fit in. I do it because I like it.
And I'm done with MLP. I might not get hostile again towards it but the fanbase just pisses me off for the biggest part. I know one or two "Bronies" (god that sounds so incredibly stupid) which are just fine. I for my part don't want to be associated with it again. If the same happens to me with Anime fine - that shall be it. But I can't see this happening (at least) in the very near future.
I just got myself a Sayaka/Kyouko Weiß Schwarz-deck, a fresh pair of sleeves and a playmat after all. That'd be waste of money compared to one freaking blindbag I got when I was at the physical and medical examination with a friend who also likes the show.
Call me a weeb, I don't care but I'm glad I found out about those Chinese Cartoons :^)
So many great storys and great art.
That will have to be Haruhi. It was fucking great
Qwaser would have been better following Katja and Hana around. Sasha was indeed a shit.
Technically, I gave up anime sometime between 18 to 23. I would have to argue that the first anime to get me back into and anime and keep me trapped was Toradora.
>Sayaka/Kyouko Weiß Schwarz-deck
>Not just a Sayaka deck.
Why you are still here?
I haven't rewatched it... Kinda think I should...
there are some animes i watched as a kid before i knew what anime was, like "Nils no Fushigi na Tabi" and "3000 Leagues in Search of Mother". But i guess Pokemon was the one who revived my interest in anime. the first anime i ever downloaded off the internet was Tenchi Muyo in a 15mb RM file per episode. Feels Natsukashi
Please die in a fire
Red's gate ability and the Kyouko Shares an Apple bond for Second Year of Mitakihara middle school Sayaka are inevitable. It's my first deck I built myself and at a local tournament I was ranked Place 6 out of 21. I consider that a success.
Also Sayaka Miki Lvl 3 is a pain in the ass to get. I'm stuck with 3x Kyouko Sakura Lvl 3 in return.
Probably Akira or Kaiji.
I couldn't find it in me to read after the reset. I don't even care to find out how it ends, or to read what Hussie has planned next.
Yeah it was. I should reread it one of these days.
Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya
Because I've grown to like it here more than /v/.
You don't like Toradora?
I'm interested in the game, but I'm not going to play a game where I have to be with Kyoko.
Mine here as well. Heck, Clannad even convinced me to change my studies to Natural Science and strive towards becoming a doctor, something I was kind of afraid to do before I watched/read it.
I don't want to admit this... But it's true.
I hate how less non-Highschool animes there are.
Come on, Sasha was a true man. He was a nice character, and worked perfectly as a side character to Katya.
Around 2005 I started watching subbed anime, Ah Megami-sama and Vandread were my first.
But before that I had already watched tons of dubbed anime like Scaflowne, Elfen Lied, Arc the Lad, Orphen etc.
you put the S in capital, so that makes me think it wasn't a typo.
I agree with you. I would love myself a nice post high school romance anime, but it's not likely to happen. I guess Golden Time kind of counts, but JC Staff is fucking it in the ass.
phew I thought it was just me who thought this... The anon who posted that might have wanted bait but it makes a point- a point most anons don't want to admit exists.
You can also play a Green-Blue combo with Madoka, Homura and Sayaka. Then you have easy to get Lvl 3 characters which heal you and good deck control due to Brainstorming. Red/Blue lacks brainstorming at all. If you draw all your Climax before you are Lvl 1 or even in the beginning you can go home.
It's risky to play but if you have luck and are good at planning your changes you can have a strong board with the Blue/Red combo. But I can see that you don't like Kyouko. I think she matches perfectly with Sayaka since one supporter from each site can make the other girl OP if played right.
A solo Yellow (Mami) deck is also possible and really good.
Kateikyou Hitman Reborn.
The first animu that I watched was Saint Seiya or Sailor Moon.
The first animu that I downloaded, besides shounen shit, was Azumanga Daioh.
And the first mango that I've read was Card Captor Sakura.
>comic is LTR
Akagi and Excel Saga.
Believe it or not.
Clannad tells the story of a couple which meets in Highschool until they come together even after Highschool in their normal lives in the Second Season Clannad: After Story.
Highly recommended if you don't know it
Ahiru no Quack
Now that is an interesting combination. Excel wasn't really being talked about in 05. How exactly did you end up with those two?
Full Metal Panic, followed by Excel Saga.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuz01t_9wtg my first subtitled one, atleast
I finished Clannad, but never finished After Story after getting spoiled. I did watch the end multiple times and the last few episodes.
The Kyou arc is my favorite.
How is Excel Saga a gateway anime? I mean, I get that it's funny and pretty simple but without understanding the references I guess it would be kind of boring. Unless missing the references motivated to watch more stuff.
Both were from a stream originating here on 4chan actually. People just streamed random shit, one person from /a/ streamed the bowling episode from Excel Saga, and I was laughing my ass off the entire episode.
Then some other /a/non streamed a few episodes of the blind master arc I believe, and I was all "Holy shit I have no idea what's going on but this is fucking awesome."
Regular poster and lurker ever since.
he spoilers you heard probably had nothing to do with the REAL feels you're gonna feel at the end. some things can't be spoiled.
nigger he's saying it was HIS gateway anime, the one that got HIM hooked
Do you know how many years old that comic is?
the anime with the metal horse. that one
why does it matter?
Not the guy you're asking, but in my case, it was just a dvd I picked up from HMV years and years ago from their "Manga" section on a whim. I knew basically nothing about anime, but it was good slapstick and I was curious about some of the references... etc. etc.
Iirc there weren't many references, it was dumb random fun most of the time, would say it's a good gateway.
Do you know how many years old Musashi Gundoh is? Eight, and like a fine wine it has aged to perfection and become a masterpiece.
When did you watch it, and what were you powerlevels then?
How are your powerlevels now? If you feel they are relatively high, go rewatch it and you will have a completely new experience.
Just watch it
>there weren't many references
Oh, child. You have no fucking idea how many references per minute is in that show.
sounds to me like more of a reason to watch it
>tfw my mom fucking loves this anime for some reason
One of my first series is SZS.
I tend to rewatch and reread it every other year.
Oh shit, yeah. Escaflowne, I allways get that name wrong.
why does your mom got to be THAT much of a virgin?
first subtitled anime i watched was Magical Project S.
It is a Watanabe anime. That alone should tell anyone who knows anime what they are getting into.
My mom is in her late 60's and got hooked on SNK. She keeps bugging me asking when the next season is going to come out.
>All this new
Keep lurking. You should be ashamed of getting into anime with EL or Madoka or Chuuni, or being on /a/ less than a year, not bragging about it, even if you put a spoiler on top.
It was edgy shit with no real substance and dumb teenage girls latched onto it by the dozen. Take a guess why /a/ hates it.
That said, I do understand if someone with a gore or ryona fetish enjoys it a lot. There's a lot of violence porn in there - hell, Umetsu worked on it.
More than one person has said it. I just figure it would lose appeal if you don't get the references.
Ah. Makes sense.
Kannazuki no Miko
Was a huge yurifag back in '07 and still am
I don't know. She's pretty weird.
Why should they be ashamed of getting into a hobby? Everyone has to start somewhere. If they are willing to look into new things, and not act like asshats they should be welcomed. /a/ isn't your secret clubhouse.
That's actually pretty cute. Are you left and your mother right?
>Keep lurking. You should be ashamed of getting into anime with EL or Madoka or Chuuni, or being on /a/ less than a year, not bragging about it, even if you put a spoiler on top.
It's inevitable that there will be a next generation of fans and the like. Rather than shame I think humility and modesty are what they should feel.
she's on the right, but the left was just a fellow cosplayer.
I'd rather not show my face.
Excel saga got sold to a lot of western tv-stations early on, might be one of the first non-kidfriendly shows many people saw.
And it was fucking hilarious, and I don't think it relied entirely on references.
>Why should they be ashamed of getting into a hobby? Everyone has to start somewhere. If they are willing to look into new things, and not act like asshats they should be welcomed. /a/ isn't your secret clubhouse.
If you're so new that you can't understand why /a/ dislikes new posters, then you should be the one lurking.
>Rather than shame I think humility and modesty are what they should feel.
Two sides to the same coin. Either way, the point is that they stop posting and if they want to remain, learn /a/ before they start posting. It's like a preteen going into a book club and spouting about how much he loves twilight. If you really want to be part of it, let the grown-ups talk and keep quiet until you have something productive to add.
True tho sorry for asking.
Kind regards from her to me. She seems to be a nice person.
So in other words it's just lurkmoar. I do agree.
I'm fucking in my 40s. I came to 4chan from SA right after it was made. Your posts reek of so much try hard newfaggotry it is ridiculous. New posters that act like shits are the ones that should be shunned and ridiculed, not some kids that are talking about what drew them in.
You are tilting at windmills my friend.
guess what, even if stayed here 5 more years, his answer to this thread will still be the same, since it's an obsolete answer.
unless you're saying he should lie and tell people he started watching anime from some obscure 1970s show to seem cool to people like you.
Is that game expensive? I've played Yu-Gi-Oh online for years without ever buying any cards because that shit was way too expensive
InuYasha, FMA, and Detective Conan, or Case Closed according to the dub on Adult Swim. Not sure which one qualifies as my gateway since I started watching them all at pretty much the same time.
just lurkmore grandpa.
That is some pretty desperate attempt to fit in there.
But if it's a relatively recent anime it guarantees that the person is new.
>look how old I am
You're doing exactly the same thing as the other guy except your post has no point.
Watched it many years ago dubbed and censored on the tee-vee, rewatched few years ago, ofcourse I could spot some reference but
>You have no fucking idea how many references per minute is in that show
I'm sure enough it wasn't on this level. Most of the comic element were pretty much "original content"
Don't you have something more productive to do than bitching at people on the internet?
Golden Boy. It both aroused and confused me.
I'm not ashamed.
>Lurking is "just fitting in"
Well, then that's a good thing, isn't it?
single sketches from Nichijou
it always makes my heart warmer
like for example right now, as I'm sipping my cheap screwdriver cocktail lurking /a/ and watching it
you got an awesome mum
Marmalade boy. In my country was heavily censored, with adapted names and an atrocious dub. Nevertheless, it stole my heart.
Well a whole display of Madoka Magica with 20 booster packs for 8 cards each costs about 70 Euro. That's actually neat compared to YuGiOh.
There are also pre-constructed trial decks which cost 15 Euro. Most of them are playable. The thing is you have to import most of the cards since 70% of them are not available in English.
A store near me sells them in English and Japanese not too expensive.
But the game is worth it. It requires tactics, good ressource management and a certain amount of luck as well. You can't just butt in with a pre-determined tactic like in YuGiOh with its OP as fuck XYZ cards nowadays.
In average every deck is equally good you just need to know how to play it.
Find your favorite series which has printed cards and let's go! It's really good.
I tried watching Nichijou and just couldn't enjoy it. It wasn't bad but it the entertainment to time ratio was too low. I enjoyed Azumanga Daioh, Yotsuba, even Lucky Star, amongst other things, so I felt a bit disappointed. Maybe I'll give the manga a look at some stage.
shit dat persona 4 reference that I missed.
What do you consider a gateway anime? I watched DBZ, Trigun, Tenchi, Sailor Moon, and a ton of other shit on Toonami, but I don't consider any of them having influence on my watching anime today. What made me decide to start keeping up with airing anime was Haruhi, so I guess that is my gateway.
Death Note was originally the first anime I watched (if you don't count pokemon), but I really didn't get into anime officially until I watched Little Busters and Refrain last year.
Trigun back in 2001. Still one of my favorites, and still the best fucking op theme.
>Lucy was something like my proto-waifu and i wanted to make babies with her and destroy the world when i was in my edgy phase
Fullmetal Alchemist and Lucky Star.
Never watched any of the big 3 and the closest thing to it I had exposure to was D-Gray man.
i watched the shit that played on ytv and razor channel back in the day (Canaduuuuu). Aside from the typical pokemon and digimon shit, i started off with deathnote, bebop, FMA (first series), and rahxephon. But the anime that brought me to dive deeper was FMA:B, after that shit just snowballed into steins;gate, baccano, and some other shit.
I... thought you were speaking about Yamagami until the last third of the sentence.
Blue Submarine No.6 for me. First saw it on Toonami when I was six or seven and I loved it. A recent viewing made me realize it was stretched too thin.
Elfen Lied was hilarious. Especially when his father's head took off into orbit like a saturn rocket.
Okay, I must admit, this is hilarious. I should watch Elfen Lied one of these days...
To anime would probably be DBZ or pokemon. To subs would probably be Naruto or Digimon Savers.
American voice-acting is so awful. Fuck.
Dual parallel worlds
>not posting the op
Season two fucking never.
Last Exile and under water ray romano.
Used to Play Stepmania years back and downloaded one of the Anime packs. Both Openings became my favorite tracks and eventually ended up watching them. No regrets.
I feel like I'm the only one. Still love Golgo 13
I don't even know why.
Claymore. Teresa arc hooked me. And I wasn't familiar with power leveling so the whole thing was enjoyable for me.
The first I have watched knowing it was an anime would be probably Death Note, after that I've watched some shows like GTO, Azumanga, Elfen Lied but I didn't actually care about it a lot. After that I had few years of not watching anything at all.
And anime that revived my intrest in this medium was Madoka. The I watched some older shows that looked popular and have good recommendations like Kino's Journey etc.
Considering that in this thread some people had problem with newfaggotry. This is my fourth season watching airing shows on /a/. First show that I've watched and posted in threads was Muromi-san. Never was called out on beeing new. Newfagotry is about how you act now how long you've been on a board.
Also since some people also had problem with MLP. I was also fan of the show when it was at it's prime, I was even very active on /mlp/ during the airtime. MLP was good and /mlp/ had very good attitude back then. I'm baffled that most fans let the show live in their memory and got over this show ended after the second season, but people who hated the show still are active.
My point is, your newfags are shit, mlpfags are shit is fucking stupid.
>Canadian voice-acting is so awful.
OreImo would have to be the show that taught me that I didn't have to keep my preferences as strictly shounen and that a SoL can be just as entertaining. Not only that, but it showed me how shitty it is watching anime via streams.
probably watched pokemon and dragonball z before this, but lets face it, those are so mainstream even normalfags have seen them.
I guess watamote
probably astroboy or hinotori 2772: Ai no Kosumozōn yes im this old
>all this new
Fushigi yugi was my first anime. also my waifu before I even knew what a waifu was, and she still is.
I watched it dubbed
First anime I watched was sailor moon
My gateway anime was azumanga daioh
Probably Cowboy Bebop. I don't even remember but it was one of my firsts along with scryed
Death Note and K-ON!a
WHAT THE FUCK IS COOLER THAN ALUCARD
The first would have been Dragon Ball, but the gateway into subs and /a/ was Ergo Proxy.
>Error: You seem to have mistyped the CAPTCHA
>Error: You seem to have mistyped the CAPTCHA
>Error: You seem to have mistyped the CAPTCHA
fuck you moot
Watching G-Force: Guardians of the Universe is also the first time at a friend's house was actually what led me to looking up what channel it was on and finding Cartoon Network. Reruns of G-Force, Voltron and Speed Racer are what got me into anime in the early 90s.
death note and elfen lied
I still like both to this day
I dabbed in anime here and there but never really got hooked on it. Even when I was reading the naruto manga I didn't dab into anything else really. Then I saw a clip of a episode of angel beats and I watched that and have been watching so much fucking anime I can't count. So it owuld have to be Angel Beats.
And it taught you the best lesson of all, Kirino is the best girl.
and nothing has topped it since
I watched it dubbed.
I'm so sorry.
